  • The perfect timing for a question on anxiety and hot weather. I've made videos about the heat and anxiety in the past and it still seems to bother me at times even now. So let's take a closer look at why the heat or hot weather affects levels of anxiety.
Todays question is: I wanted to know why the heat affects my Anxiety. I used to love the sun, but the heat really gets to me. Does anyone else suffer with this? ?
If anyone has any questions they'd like me to discuss on future episode of Anxiety United Questions Everything (AUQE), then please comment below or get in touch via our other social media channels.

I totally relate to this. I think for me it's because it brings on the same sensations as panic. My heart beats faster, I get sweaty, feel kinda weak and faint, etc... It sucks! It's like you said...the thoughts make it worse!

Yes which is why even during cold weather/seasons... although I miss a nice hot/warm shower (pre-anxiety/panic days)... I now shower with semi cold showers because the hot temperature takes me back to that adrenaline rush feeling 😫 ..... which it's also a bit difficult for me to exercise just the same. The heat has become my enemy. 😭

    • @anxietyunited
      @anxietyunited  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I guess the only way to combat this enemy is to gradually expose yourself to it. To prove to yourself that there is no threat. Easier said than done tho, I know.

    • @nariko47

@@anxietyunited I've noticed how it's all in my head because when I'm rushing... the temperature can be warm close to hot and it doesnt give me any anxiety because I'm already distracted with what I have to do next.
But when I'm free to worry lol i give worry all my energy. (A learned behavior i know 😔) it's a bad brain habit. I need to learn how to change the perspective. 😫

WOW!!!!!!!!! I’m so happy I found this video I could honestly cry. I have struggled in the heat for years. I live in Australia so when it gets to around 40 it’s REALLY HARD!
I see 70 year old men walking in the heat like it’s nothing and I struggle to water the plants in the backyard for 2 minutes in the heat.
It makes me feel so anxious. My main fear is dizziness and passing out, collapsing or dropping dead at any moment so when I’m
In the heat it makes me feel like it’s DEFINITELY possible. It makes me feel so dizzy and faint and just...... wow
I always feel like I have a physical Illness with heat intolerance being a symptom. I’m always googling which disease or disorder it could be because it’s just insane !!!!

I'm glad to see that I'm not alone. The very thought of summer depresses me. I can be in an air conditioned car and the site of that fire ball rising in the morning gives me anxiety. Most people associate life with the beginning of spring and summer while I always feel more alive in colder climates. I used to work at a fast food restaurant, I would go and sit inside the deep freezer and feel so peaceful. A lot of my work is outside so its especially hard for me. I've heard that "hot yoga " has helped people with this.

Hi, I find your video very interesting.....yes anxiety is very much about thoughts but not only. I spend this summer in my parents house in south Italy....gosh I was terribly annoyed by the strong sun and heat....it was not only about thinking....it was a real feel since also other family members were suffering because of the heat. I coped with buying a thermo bottle so water could stay fresh when I used to go out, tank top, and shorts were helping also. Concerning the car I studied all the possibilities to make the car stay cool....cover all the window and the top....always....even if you have to use your car many times....on you tube I saw a big umbrella for cars....it is a bit expensive but it is amazing.....otherwise buy self reflective barriers which are a way cheaper.....then use hat every time. Another thing that really helps me to go through the summer is staying in water:sea, river, swimming pool.....I mean there is always an option to find a water place and not always spending a lot of money....idk how is in UK but I heard you guys have nice community swimming pool. Then when you have a scary thought think about something that makes you laugh so you break the cycle of negativity.....I know it is hard but anxiety cannot win over our lives.

Greetings from Jacksonville Florida! For the last few weeks most days have been in the high 90s F, humid, with heat index up to 109. I take my dogs out for a walk and am practically in tears by the time the second one is walked. It is so hot that there is no way to be comfortable, and the discomfort triggers the anxiety. I have air conditioning in my house and car, and sit in the house at 82F with a hoodie on I’m so cold. To me, it is the inability to be comfortable that is the anxiety trigger. Too hot outdoors, too cold indoors. Nice to know I’m not the only one with this issue of heat triggering anxiety.

@@brianshank1419 Hi Brian, this reminds me of what I wrote and now I know why the last few days have been so difficult! After a few pleasant days last week we are back into furnace temperatures in the afternoon again and my mood has been dark. Too cold in the house, too hot outside, constant discomfort. Plus trying to do household chores makes me get hot and then I get chills when I stop to eat or rest. Odd how the brain works as I have noticed being uncomfortable as well as my moods turning dark but forgot that the discomfort is what is likely triggering my anxiety. Brace yourself for another few scorchers this week. And I'll try to remember that the discomfort is causing the anxiety, not me just going crazy.

The hormones released that make you sweat mimic the hormones released when you have a panic attack. The sensations are the same. If you are sweating in the heat a lot , it is important to have balanced electrolytes: magnesium, potassium and sodium. You can counteract the hormone cortisol with more sugar. Basically, drink orange juice and it will help the anxiety naturally.

I was born and raised in the tropical weather. Oh i know how hot it gets here. I remember in high school, we had to march under the blazing sun, my recommendation is not to be bare. We who live in the hot weather all year long doesn't go out without clothes. We don't do sunbathing and all because it's not something enjoyable and it really stings the skin once the sun hits. Just forget about the sunbathing if it's something becoming unenjoyable. Usually later in the day when the sun is about to go down and the sky has more clouds, that's when we see people having their shirt off.

I have the same issue and this is a nightmare: I go into panic attack as soon as I feel it's hot and there is no way of stopping it, unless I go back inside and grab an icepack and turn the A/C on at 60 F and it will take me 15 minutes to recover. And everytime I feel I have a heatstroke or heart attack or that I can't breathe anymore. I also noticed that coffee was making those panic attacks even worse: as soon as I was outside for 2 seconds my heart will go to 160 BPM and I feel like I am paralyzed and I can't even move and I don't want to talk to anybody. So now I am off the coffee but it's still bad, it will happen in a few minutes and my heart will start jumping. And I hate it. I can't even mow my lawn or if I really had to mow it it will be at 6 in the morning because the heat goes bad. I took an EKG, checked my blood pressure, did blood test, checked blood oxygen, nothing's wrong with me and people don't understand why I get like that. And i don't know what to do, and I live in Texas, so here it's bad 4 months in a year and I have been stuck at home this year. Last year it was not that bad, I was able to cope with the heat but this year it's impossible, as soon as it gets around 85 or 90 F I can't go out anymore.

Which makes me a night owl. I just don't like the heat the humidity I love the sun is beautiful but its effect In the Heat of the summer can go to hell hahaha good video.

i live in Los Angeles, CA and it is SO hot here. I have had anxiety pretty much my whole life and am on Lexapro and Welbutrin. As a lot of people already know, we are in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic and are required to wear masks when we go into any shops. I never liked the sun or heat. I sweat a lot on my face, armpits, insides of elbows, insides of knees, boobs, butt, you name it. The heat is so uncomfortable I usually get sick after 5 or 10 mins of being in the heat. My skin starts to hurt really bad, it literally feels like my skin is boiling off my bones.
I went to Ikea today and had a full blown public panic attack because of the heat. During spring, summer, and fall here, i usually stay inside. 70*F is usually the height of the amount of heat i can handle. I absolutely hate it. I try my best to not go outside because it hurts my skin so much.
    waiting for cooler weather,
    kitty

By the way there is a name to describe what you feel and it's called thermophobia. Definition from the internet: "An abnormal and persistent fear of heat, including hot weather and hot objects. Sufferers from thermophobia experience anxiety even though they realize their fear is irrational. To avoid heat, they may live in a cold climate, wear light clothing, stay indoors on warm days, and avoid hot water and hot foods". I also noticed if i go by a warm object that I start getting anxious. Lots of people experience those problems and you don't have to live in a hot country to experience it Temperatures as low as 20 degres can trigger those anxieties. To resolve it, so far you have to exercice on a daily basis, and the most important thing: do not drink coffee because caffeine will trigger those feelings without doubt.

I don’t know how i came up here watching the videos and click on yours but i can understand , Anxiety is something like a feeling of nearly death. As my observation the weather has triggered your Anxiety but the reason is not weather, the reason is you are been depressed from along time, lake of sleep, worrying about future or work or financial or family matters for a long time, and these issues are adding to the brain step by step, its like a Volcano Brust. The hot weather triggered your all stuff out leading to anxiety attack. And Anxiety is also linked with stomach problems. This symptom will decrease when you totally understand where is it coming from.

Never ever had weather anxiety before, ive had mild anxiety for years but this summer i have developed full blown heat anxiety,im so glad its getting cooler because ive spent 3 weeks not going out and just watching the temperature gauge, ive hardly eaten ive lost 10 pounds im just a nervous wreck, even thought about buying cigars to calm my nerves and ive not smoked for years. I personally dont know what started it off but i do know its been really humid this year like no other year ive known so feels very oppressive like you are suffocating slowly, i usually look forward to summer as it dont last long in Scotland,i usually love gardening and growing plants but ive not set foot outside because of this anxiety. I have also been watching the weather forecasts as well and now fear thunderstorms and they have been predicted more or less everyday, never had this fear before either, its just an end of the world fear,i just wish i knew what happened to cause this, its crazy i just feel like barricading myself in the house and dying, the only change this year is that i turned 45 nothing else changed, its like a pre-programmed thing, never ever felt like this before been constantly tired been sleeping alot more as well. If this keeps up a docs visit will be needed i cant live like this. I totally get where your coming from these thought are irrational its just getting to the part of the brain to understand there is no fear necessary.
