Pellet Testing With The Weihrauch HW80 Air Rifle

  • Pellet testing the HW80 with surprising results. I've had a few HW80 owners try to tell me that the Crosman Premier Domed Ultra Mags 10.5 gr. were "THE" pellet. I tried em' and they were right! Never expected them to outperform the H&N Barracuda Match with it's much better consistency but they did..

    The HW80 was developed as one of the first supersonic capable spring rifles through collaboration between Weihrauch and Dr Robert Beeman. It was possibly the first ever air rifle powerplant designed with the aid of computer modelling and was marketed as the Beeman R1. The HW80/Beeman R1 known for being robust, precise and dependable has become the benchmark against which other full size, powerful break barrel air rifles may be judged. It is often referred to simply as 'The Workhorse'. There is even a book written about this rifle called The Beeman R1 Supermagnum Air Rifle by Tom Gaylord.

    That wás a surprise! Look at that grouping! Since 4 days I own a Hw80, used. But very nice still. Serial nr. shows its made between 2018 -2020. I wanted the Hw80 for so long, and now I have one. I only quickly removed the stock to peek, and I saw new greyish Moly grease. It dieseled a bit the first ××× shots. (With a little smoke) I saw a steel spring guide! But it has zero twang to my surprise fortunately. But still I always need to open a new (to me) airrifle. Degrease it. And lubricate it to my satisfaction. Now its also a .177. So still looking for the best pellets. I remember having a "big box" of Crosmans a decade ago. Very cheap and lasted a long time.But more importantly: they were accurate! So after seeing this video, I order these Crosmans also😁

    I want a HW80, I've always wanted a HW80! From my own experience my "magnums air guns" shot and grouped better with heavier pellets. My mid range velocity guns, such as my BSA Lighting SE prefers the Crosman 14.5 grain pellet. Love to watch you shoot, Kevin. ScottinPa.

  • @drichi07
    @drichi07 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    On my Beeman R10 (HW85), heavier pellets almost always outperform lighter---less the 8.5 grains. The H&N Crow Magnums are very good, and back in the 90s when Crosman Premiers were of outstanding quality, the 10.5 grain clearly outperformed the 7.9. In fact, the 10.5 was the most accurate in my R10. Recently I have been using Air Arms Diablo Feild Heavy at 10. grains, which are the most accurate at 25 yards. The H&N Field Target Trophy performed fairly well too. The only lighter pellets that I have tested that were close were RWS Meisterkugeln target pellets.
    It looked like the wind may have affected the Barracuda group as it seemed to be strong enough to shake the target when you fired it.
    Anyway, just found your channel and very much enjoy it. I live in Japan and only get home for the holidays to should my firearms and airguns so I have to get by with airsoft and watching other guys shooting on TH-cam. Your videos are well done and interesting.

    Crosman Premier Domed Ultra Mag and Hollow Point get a bad wrap because they're cheap, but they're some of the most versatile pellets out there. They usually work well in most guns and Gamo Break barrels love them. My HW95 prefers a bigger diameter Field Target Trophy or Baracuda Hunter Extreme, but still does ok with the Crosman.

    Try firing about 6 pellets of the new type before comparing groups. The different lead types take about that many to line the rifling with its own lead before giving more true results. The crosmans seemed to group very well after the excites, maybe they are similar lead make ups?

    It seems that pellets perform at their best under 900 fps and this is reflected in your video. The R1/ HW80 is a much better performer in .22 cal. In the smaller calibre a lot of its potential is lost to inefficiancy. In .22 this rifle can launch Crosman Premiers at over 750 fps out of the box and when tuned can add another 100 fps and still be accurate. If you can source a book called: The Beeman R1 Supermagnum Air Rifle by Tom Gaylord you will be convinced that this rifle can be made into a solid performer. Many thanks for another superb presentation and in earning another subscriber.

    • @razor1962
      @razor1962  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Darren. I appreciate your obvious knowledge on the subject. I agree that most pellets do poorly at velocities approaching 1000fps. I'm already convinced that this rifle is a performer after seeing the group that those Crosmans produced.

      True... But in .177 you can really stretch your range with the right pellets. I went .22 and sometimes I really miss those Hail Mary's that only the .177 can pull off. 😕

      My hw 80s are UK spec, on our side of the big puddle(Atlantic) we are restricted to sub 12 foot pound kinetic energy. I use RWS superdome in both .177 and .22 and find they are quite good. Both of my hw80s are from the 1980s and still perform as they did 30plus years ago.

    Crosman Premier 7.9gr worked quite well in my HW77K. The heavier pellets seem to suit your HW80, I wonder if the excite pellets were going a bit too fast and losing stability? Bisley Magnum, JSB Jumbo Heavy or RWS Supermag may also be worth a try.

    Is this an FAC air rifle . I’ve been trying to find a video on a full power here in the states rather than a sub 12 ft lb rifle. If so , how is the shot cycle when compared to an HW95?

    • @razor1962
      @razor1962  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it's a FAC version. I don't own a HW95 but the shot cycle reflects the power output. Mine has a Vortek kit installed which definitely smooths it out some while keeping the energy output right up there. Kicks pretty hard and gives the impression of power.

    Hi Kevin, yeah those crossman pellets seemed to love your rifle, like seeing the pellets hitting that old cutting disc (bell) just an idea for you maybe get a few steel knock down targets line them up on a pice of wood 2×4 or something also the spinner targets are great to see as well.
    Anyway love the videos as always.
    I saw in your older videos you have some nice drone footage, love to see an over view of your range sometime. You look like you have a nice pice of property.

    • @razor1962
      @razor1962  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Graham! I may pick up some steel targets. The problem is the fact that I have to take a round about route to my range because of a very steep and overgrown incline so resetting them is a chore.
      I did employ a drone to give a tour of the range. Overhead shots would be cluttered with trees obstructing the view of the range so I flew the drone closer to the ground. Thanks for your continued input.

    Outstanding ! Reckon those old eyes are better than you thought ? 🤔
    An HW80 is seriously over powered for light weight pellets. I'd imagine they tend to spin out. RE: Tighter in the bore.
    CPH are pretty high antimony, with a thick waste, so they have good resistance for Super Magnums. The thin skirt seals the lands quickly and the round head flys well at long range.
    Kinda nice to be able to stretch your range with .177. 😎👍
    I know the JSB heavies can hold their own but at extreme ranges I expect the CPH are just more stable on the ragged edge. The JSB's will group well but the CPH will hold it together longer. 😀
    What glass and mounts on your HW80 ? #Weihrauch

      Thanks for sharing what is obviously extensive knowledge. Your input is sincerely appreciated. This is the scope and the rings are cheap Chinese knockoffs.
