- NEW VIDEO on this hedge: • Hedge RENOVATION Part ...
Cutting this Lonicera Nitida hedge (honeysuckle), getting quite a severe prune to straighten sections of it up and giving it a new lease of life. Using Stihl hedge trimmers.
Thanks for watching 👍 - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
Please remember this is a renovation folks, it's not suppose to look all green and fabulous 😂. Don't forget, you can't do this to all hedge types. Thanks for watching 👍 FOLLOW UP video now live: th-cam.com/video/3wF6nyD0dd4/w-d-xo.html
How long will it take for the hedge to regenerate and cover the bare spots that you had to cut away? I need to do some work on my property and im wondering how long its going to look rough before it comes back. Also is there particular time of year its best to do this work? Winter/Spring/Fall?
I did this for 12 years for a large school district. And every time I did this, some staff member would flip out and go rant to my boss on how I ☠️ the hedges. So my boss would explain to them that I didn't ☠️ the hedges 1.And 2 the hedges weren't uniform shape and size. And that fixed them 😤
@chefdan87, it depends on the hedge. Some grow faster than others. Watering also plays a part. In a nutshell fast growers 2-3 weeks, slow growers 3-4 weeks.
Not every hedge can handle hard pruning. Never prune junipers like this. Also in cold winters or hot summers this is ill advised.
It really needed it. The branches on the inside were so matted and clogged. No air flow, lack of sunlight would eventually start the killing process for that hedge. Good job!
Thanks. Yes very matted hedge, i may have to reduce the top next year as very matted as well 👍
Lonicera nitida is always like this whatever the width or height. However regeneration does it good.
Finally someone who understands.
The hedge will love that. Getting the air and light into it will literally let it breathe and have a new lease of life. Hedge renovations are my favourite job because I imagine hearing the hedge take a huge gasp of air 😀
Yes this hedge has responded really well to both renovations, vid coming soon on its current form 👍
id like to see a progression picture of the hedge once it grows back
Yes i hope to do a follow up vid on the progress of it 👍
Yes it should look like a brand new young hedge again after a couple of seasons 👍👌
The hedge is then burned and a new one planted.
@@gordbaker896 is that to purify the root network?
Unfortunately that is impossible… this hedge will not rejuvinate 😂
I like the guard to make the hedges perfect. Helps alot. I'm ocd and thought I was the best but you got me on that!! Damn good job
Thanks 👍, the catcher plate is awesome for these types of hedges.
That catcher/guard is genius.
Where do you get catcher guard like that?
so much talent the queen has requested your presence for her country estates.
Quality as always. Thanks for sharing. All the best.
Cheers mate 👍
When you cut back deeply like that, how long does it take for the leaves to fill in again? Six months? A year? Would be very interesting to see the progress.
The best forearm workout there is I reckon !
Getting that top as flat as a snooker table! Brilliant work!
Not quite but thanks 👍
shouldve did the sides like that too...
Great job, I will watch this again
Thanks 👍
Ese cortaseto es increíble 💪🏼
👍
Das hat mich zum lachen gebracht haha mitten auf der Wiese soviel zurückschneiden !!! Viel Glück
Great job
Wow. Glad someone allowed that. Done a few similar. Looks ghastly but it desperately needed it. Brilliant job 👏

Thanks for that, yes needed it, doing the tops by about 6 inches next spring hopefully 👍
Ive just trimmed back my mums hedge thats been there since 1950! Over the years she had trimmed the inside right back to the 'trunks' but not so much the outside so the hedge was leaning towards the road...
The was a lot of dead stuff inside which ive cleared away and the whole thing looks pretty bare now! Ive fed it... hoping it recovers ok😂
Hedges can get out of control fast, hope it recovers well 👍
Tough job, respect! Personally, I only use battery hedge shears, much lighter and quieter. But for such a renovation job I would still use my petrol shears.
👍 I keep my battery trimmers for the lighter stuff
Great job ❤ I love it
👌
Great job !
Cheers 👍
Looked brutal 😮
I don’t understand. Looks like a killing, not a trimming. I guess it buds out just fine. But surely there is a limit
Nice job! 💚💪🏼
👍
Can look a bit drastic, but needs to be done. Nice job chap!
Thanks mate, yeh certainly needed it, got to do the tops next year.
Yep 💯👍
Nice works, 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks 👍
Nice job!
Thanks!
You are the real deal.
Sign this guy up for Marine Corps haircuts !
👌
Well that was strangely therapeutic. Also I never realised you could cut hedges back that much.
most healthy hedges can tolerate cutting back, not all of them though 👍
5 years ago I took a privet hedge down to sticks. 120’ long , 6' feet deep and 4' tall. It had been pruned with hedge trimmers for 35 years. I did it all by hand, it is now easy to maintain and green throughout.
Indeed, privet from the fifties cut back to a few half length sticks, and for taxus I kept just some green on top
That is the best electric weed eater I've ever see
Dang! I hear ya!
👍
I guess the hedge got the equivalent of a face peel for it's beautification 😊
Certainly did 👌
Was studying how to prune apple (fruit) orchards - and they have a tractor with vertical and horiztonal industrial hay blade cutter, that literally sets the cuts and heights. You just mow down the length of the rows, and jiffy spiffy all is cut to exact specs. Just rake out and rake up the cuts, and the whole area is pruned to pristine shape. Might want something like that with a small riding lawn mower tractor design.
Just like your trailer icons there is YT TechFind with such a lawn mower tractor design - and looks like a winenr !
TechFind - Incredible Hedge Trimming & Lawn Mowing Machines
Not as nice as watching a skilled human doing it though…
Very nice.
Thank you
Very good vedio I trim hedges over here in New Zealand for a living I use Husqvarna products mostly I do have a Stihl hedge trimer and a small battery trimmer for small hedges and shapping but find the Husqvarna trimmers are far superior seam to have a neater cut .
Thanks, I haven't tried any of the latest husky trimmers so cant compare but my stihls all cut great and haven't let me down yet 👍
Работа Мастера!
Nice👍👍👍
👍
I have walked by a lot of hedges that need this. Overgrown to the middle of the sidewalk. Just trim them!!
😅 that's what keeps me in work 👍
Shearing that sheep is hard work.
Wasn't too bad 👍
good work
Thanks
Nice work! If you do renovation on all hedges at the same time so all hedges go brow, would the green come back, or will it die? Thanks!
Risky doing it that way, some species can handle it though. This 1 may have tolerated such a hard cut back but it was already struggling so i wasnt going to stress it out even more than needed.
Nice job mate. Not sure why you brought that double sided machine out. But good to see someone who knows what there doing 👍
Cheers mate, i needed to cut from both directions, so the double made it easier doing the sides 👍
Супер!
Неужели отрастает и становится зелёным?
Yes it will grow back 👍
@@RJLgardens спасибо за ответ!
Hi, excellent job 👍 is your single sided hedge trimmer the T or R version, Here in Australia you can only get the T model fast cut, when i had my tree business for 20 years in the uk I only had the R models as all my work was thicker conifer hedges so wanted to see your thoughts before I buy one as most of my hedge work now is Italian buckthorn or again conifer and just like the longer blade 1000mm 40”.
Cheers. I have both mate, got a 30" R version and also the 40" T version and love them both. 👍
Lovely job, great video. But please don’t forget about the birds that nest in low hedges.
Thanks, yeh i always check before hand at this time of year, they dont tend to go for these hedges anyway as too dense. 👍
@@RJLgardens - very informative and with clear guidelines! I currently use a Honda trimmer which is too heavy, the blade too short. What Stihl model do you use? Thanks and keep sharing.
@@laurapalmerTDGE Thanks. I was using a stihl hs81 and stihl hs86 in this video. 👍
@@RJLgardens - Thank you. I will take this information to the dealer!
Definitely worth its investment: 2 * 60 meters inside and outside and top, in addition various trees and shrubs.
@@laurapalmerTDGE The latest models are stihl hs87 (single sided) and Stihl hs82 (double sided blades) pretty much the same as what i was using, just the newer versions. Both cracking professional bits of kit 👍
God work and god machine
👍
Great job. Ask a silly question but what is the purpose of the catcher plate? Considering buying one.
Thanks 👍
Yes I want one too
The owner of this property seems to know exactly what they want, just by looking at the other plants, bushes and trees in the background, this owner is meticulous about the appearance of the garden
👍
Hallo, und ist es denn wieder grün geworden? Haben auch so eine alte dicke Hecke, überlegen, sie so zu schneiden. Danke.
Your certainly not working in South East England judging by the colour of the grass 😉 nice job.
Cheers, this was filmed back in spring when the grass was green 😃
Hi RJL, I am also a gardener, in Spain. I'm looking for a big and good hedge trimmer, do you recommend one with a battery or better gasoline?
Depends on the kind of hedges you do and what you need really, both types have there place. Too many variables for me to suggest 1 for you 👍
I use both ,it also depends where you work as in some houses I do they like to keep the noises down
What are you using at the moment?
WOW! How long will it take for the hedge to recover and green up again?
The brown bits normally take a good year/season to recover and fill in depending on how healthy the hedge is. So no quick results unfortunately. 👍
I often wonder if non Gardeners/Landscapers/Groundsmen realise what it takes to hold those hedge cutters for long periods. After a while, your arms feel like they are gonna fall off or they ache like buggery where you should have rested a couple of minutes back.. Spring, Summer months I have 400 odd metres of Hawthorn to maintain on a 22acre estate. It's cut every two weeks in a day .
My arms are shot by then, probably cos I'm pushing 66yrs of age..lol!!
@@Saxondog Fair play to you 👍, yeh it is very tiring work especially those large hedges. All the best
@@Saxondog My whole upper body shakes for an hour after, even longer with the Stihl strimmer. Maybe at 74 years young, I might have to get someone in to do it.
@@earthmagic1 Your not wrong..The Stihl HS82's are heavy beasts and once your hedge height exceeds 4ft, you might as well take up weight lifting.
Anything above that height I use the Stihl HS94 with the head angled to suit. I've only got 50 or so metres below 4ft, so all topping is carried out with this. Faces are done with the HS82.
Good luck with your hedges.
Taxus is no problem, you can cut it back to a branch. Not sure about cypres
That is the most radical reduction I’ve ever seen. You know there is paint for grass. I wonder if it would work on hedges. I personally think hedges should be human height. I love it when I see them being managed severely.
😂 Hopefully no paint needed, This type of hedge is better kept at a lower height 👍
@@RJLgardens I certainly hope so. Those hedges 8-10 feet tall or taller are ridiculous
@@brotoubrotou3164 Cant beat a nice tall privacy hedge 🤣
@@RJLgardens that's excellent work!!! Where did you buy the tool collects the clippings? at the beginning of the video
@@chicuacemazatl3185 Thanks, I bought it online 👍
That is fantastic. Never seen that done before do mine please .love it 👍
Thanks 👍 i'll pop over next week 😂
So this will all grow back??
Hello RJL Gardens, why Did you pull in this video hard And fast on The starter rope Of your hedge trimmer? Henri Donin De Rosiere
So it starts easily 😂
Interesting how it initially all came off in one big sheet
Trimmed hedges and trees for 25 years. Was in the best shape of my life. Lol.
Certainly keeps you active 👌👍
How long does that take to green back up? Is there a treatment that has to happen in order to get new growth?
Depending on where this is, it could take several years. I did landscaping for 10+ years on the West Coast and it would have taken 3 to 4 years for this kind of trimming job to fill back in. In a drier or hotter climate this kind of trim job could kill a hedge. So you really have to know what is appropriate for your area.
I’m glad I saw this. Please, what did the owner say?
Did you mean to go that deep?
Seeking honest convo for learning purposes
On hard renos always make people aware of what hedges will potentially look like beforehand so they are not surprised. This one was planned, as it was getting too wide and unattractive.
@@RJLgardens I see. Thanks for that feedback. Please can you plan for 1 yr follow up video on this particular one? I’m really eager to see how the plant transforms.
@@dubdsy5376 Yeh i will try to. It has already started sprouting and filling in, theses heavy renovations do take time though especially in the really bare areas. 👍
Great video , new time subscriber . Watching from Dublin Ireland , just 1 question . What is the name of the orange / red plastic that sits on the top of the blade of the hedge trimmers . Can these be bought for 2 stroke petrol machines . I use Stihl myself .
Looks like something you could make yourself pretty easily, at least that way you can make it fit you machine exactly how you want it to.
Cheers, its called a catcher plate and you can get various ones for different models. you can even make one yourself if needs be. 👍
👍👍
Всем привет. Как называются растения в самом начале видео?
Please could you tell me why the hedge was trimmed back to the brown , is this done every year .❤️
This hedge was becoming to wide and untidy so needed a hard cut to stop it getting too big. No definitely not done every year 👍
@@RJLgardens da li će postati zelena?
@@snezanakundak251 Yes it will turn green again
Did same thing to my leylands they never grew back
Oops, yeh you dont want to do that to leylandii.
Can a large yew hedge be given a hard cut back like this? Great job btw👍
Cheers. Yes yew can be cut back, takes awhile to come back though and best to reduce it gradually if poss.
Shudv made an animal figure😊
"Scissorhand" way 😁
That would of turned out badly 🤣
Not only is it old, it looks like it’s suffocating.
Yes it certainly was. New vid dropping soon on the progress of this hedge 👌
Top👍😘😉✌️✌️✌️
👍
What a perfect height to work at right?
What model of hedger is that?
Yeh these hedges are a joy to work on. Double sided was a stihl hs81 and other was stihl hs86
@@RJLgardens thanks dude, new subscriber here
Cheers and welcome 👍
Nice. So spring is the best time to do this?
👍
Will the brown sections eventually turn back green?
Yep all good
RJL - when you trim the hedges like that, is it going to regrow and how long, also when is the best time to trim hedges im in surrey canada, thanks and more power
Yes it will re-grow, and normal takes around a year to fill in. Depends what type of hedge you have got and i am not familiar with your climate over there so cant help regarding best times to prune etc. 👍
👍👍👍
👍
I’m not so sure of that hedge been honeysuckle , honeysuckle is a climber called Lonicera this hedge is also Lonicera pileata. Forgive me if I’m wrong. I’m a landscape designer and have been for 30 odd years
It is in the honeysuckle family. It is a Lonicera Nitida very similar to the pileata 👍
Hey thanks for your plant ID , sorry if I seem to Ms. Know It All. I’m admiring your work and also your range of of tools and equipment , my only negative is that I’m sorry I live on the other side of our hemisphere in Ireland. Keep up the good work and I’ll keep my eye on you from now on , I’m really impressed with your work. 😜😜😜🇮🇪🇮🇪
Thanks 👌
One learns all a life's time, I am a garden landscaper and learnt latin plant names but not all of them of course, too many on earth...
Great video Sir what kind of trimmer U using? 👍👍
Thanks, just using a stihl hs81 mainly
Nice job what machine was that
Cheers, I was using the Stihl hs81 (double sided) and hs86
Welche Maschine mit welchem Blatt
Hi last year i cut back a privet hedge this hard and 60% of it has died what the hell did i do wrong??
Could be a number of things, was it healthy or diseased to start with? time of year, lack of water, blunt tools etc etc.
Great vid. You need a change now try cutting some black thorn down 🤣.😅👍
Cant mate i'm allergic to thorny hedges 🤣. Dont worry ive got plenty of nasty hedges coming. These loniceras were the start of spring jobs which ive only just got round to editing 😫. 👍
@@RJLgardens 😅. You'll get there . Like your videos no over the top music just straight to the point 👍

I thought the hedge was just fine.

Must say, I've never been a fan of squared off hedges. Gently rounded much more pleasing.
Yeh each to their own, i dont have a favourite personally. Different shapes fit different hedges and locations etc. 👍
Square shapes for the French garden style
great job I hope that side is not facing the house hahahaha
Cheers 👍
Sorry to sound dim, but what is the flat orange (attachment) on the hedge trimmer?
Check out my latest vid, I show and explain what it is 👍
Is that Boxwood.
No, its lonicera nitida, honeysuckle family
What kind of hedge is it. It looks a bit like Lonicera
👍 Yep Lonicera nitida
That is box honeysuckle right? All my clients who have it keep calling it box as in normal buxus
Yeh sometimes known as the box honeysuckle or Lonicera nitida , definitely not buxus 👍
At what time of the year did you do that? Thank you.
This was done in early spring 👍
Then I guess late fall is not recommended (I live in a cold winter climate). Thank you
I like my hedges green and trimmed not brown looking
It's a renovation Connie! They generally look worse before they look better. 🙄
This must have felt like trimming the hard skin off of cheese.
Why cut the sides like that
what brand pants?
Lonicera Nitida. edit, misread that as plants 😀. they are Stihl trousers if that was what you were after
Which sthil hedger are you using
stihl hs81 mainly
