  • In this video I take your through the 4 steps to completing a hedge reduction on a Murraya Paniculata.
    1 - Trim back hard to area you want the hedge to align with.
    2 - Finish poorly cut branches with clean sharp cuts.
    3 - Clear out dead wood.
    4 - Apply liquid fertilise and slow release fertiliser.

    Many thanks for your step by step video -i am not a gardener and seam to be more a professional weed grower than anything else. Hopefully, your step by step video will give me the confidence to reduce a very wide hedge that we have got. Not really looking forward to it as i have never have had to cut one back so hard and remove so much dead in parts.

      Hey
      haha congratulations. Did you need any formal qualifications for becoming a professional weed grower?.....lol
      You can do it. Just prepare the plant, sharp tools and take your time. It will look ugly for awhile, but once recovered you will be happy. And you will have built your confidence up which is always a positive.

    Great video mate. I'm just an amateur, but did work as a gardener/lawnmower for a couple of years when my wife was unwell. I have a bit of OCD when it comes to hedges, and like to keep them neat and tidy. But it was good advertising, as people would see the finished job and get my number. The hadest thing for me was having to convince the clients that their hedges needed a severe cut back. They just couldn't understand that their hedges were getting heavily wooded and starting to turn into trees! After being cut back they would be horrified at the end result! But all those hedges grew back . Even now my wife absolute hates it when I do a hard prune on our gardens and hedges.

    THANK you....I have been ARGUING so much with my husband about this. He totally thinks I have been doing it wrong, yet without even knowing, this is what I have been doing for the most part. HE THINKS we are ONLY supposed to trim the leaves and only a little bit....so now our hedges are way over our sidewalk!!! He yelled at me when I was doing it this way because he said, "you're making all the wood show through" LOL.....I said, " You have to, cause it's all dead" blah blah and blah. So here we are a few years later and my hedges are hanging way over our WALKWAY into our new home :(

    • @mowtime
      @mowtime  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Carol
      haha it's a common argument with hedges. The short answer, you are both correct. Once a year or so you should hard trim back your Murraya because, it's a plant so of course it going to grow bigger. If you just let it grow and grow without hard trimming it will protrude out past where you want it. You are correct there. For ongoing regular trimming maintenance though, as your husband said, you just light trim to maintain it looking great.
      I hope that helps in stopping the arguing, well about hedges at least.lol.
      Let me know how you go.

    Great video, it's a relief to know how much these hedges can be pruned back. I've just planted some mature but pretty sad looking murrayas that a friend has given me. They're about 2 metres high, pretty bare, hardly any leaves, and if there are any they're at the top. Any advice on how to get these bad boys full and lush again from bottom to top, so I can get that nice squared up effect in a few years? Thank you!

    • @mowtime
      @mowtime  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey JT
      With any transplant there is always a chance the plant will suffer shock and not recover. Ideally the plants should be given a good liquid feed to prepare them for transplanting.
      In your situation I would recommend giving them a good feed with some liquid kelp every 3-5 days and if you still see them yellowing and not happy, you may have to cut them back harder. The bigger the plant the more energy/nutrients etc it has to spread out over the plant. Lesson the distance from roots to the tip of the plant and doesn’t have to use as much energy.
      Poor transplanting can also be caused from the plants roots being cut or dug out to short. Eg digging around to close to the base of the plant when removing.
      Murrayas are pretty hardy, but not bulletproof.
      I hope yours make a good recovery.
      Keep me posted.
      Have a great weekend mate 🙂👍🏻

    Thanks for great video! I'm going to make murraya hedge as well paralel to sidewalk on my front yard. Do you think I should digg holes about 2 feet apart from the sidewalk, so that once murraya get mature it won't go over public sidewalk? Also not sure about proper spacing between holes, it appears that it might be every 2 feet or 50 cm apart, right?

    • @mowtime
      @mowtime  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi
      Spacing depends on what pot size you go with. But to give you a gauge, if you are purchasing 200mm pot size for creating a hedge, I would suggest planting approximately 60cm apart.
      Just make sure not to leave it to late to start pruning them. You want to cut/train them into a hedge.
      Hope that was of some help.

    Thank you for your video, it is one of the best clips I've come across for a hard cutback of a hedge!
    I would love your advice on what to do with a tall overgrown Xylosma Congestum hedge that requires a hard cutback on top and sides. We have some 60-odd metres of it and the maintenance is huge…too much to regularly pay someone!
    -Do you know how hard I can go? Do I have to leave some leaf on it, I’m tempted to cut right back top and sides (in late winter) which would result in no leaf remaining. Would that be ok?
    -A couple of low sections of the hedge have no growth due to too much shade, is it possible to get growth back in these sections, or is essential bald now?
    -We live in a warm temperate region of NSW, with a few frost events in winter. If I do a cutback in early April will a frost cause permanent damage, or just temporary until it reshoots?
    Thanks in advance, Jane

    • @mowtime
      @mowtime  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Jane
      Apologies for the slow response. Have been flat out with work.
      Yes, you can hard prune them, but best to leave a small amount of foliage on them.
      Most times, once you perform a hard cut back, it allows sunlight to get to those bare areas that are struggling, so long as they are not struggling from another problem such as disease or pests.
      I would leave till after winter if you get frosts, just to minimise potential damage.
      Just make sure the plant is in good health, and ready for its hard cut back.
      I hope that helps.
      Thanks for the support.

      Thanks very much.
      I try to provide videos that you just don’t see much off on TH-cam.
      Lilly Pilly varieties a pretty hard so you shouldn’t have a problem with it growing back if it gets good sun light.
      Just make sure the plant is ready for a cut back by giving it a good liquid feed with seasol, Charlie carp or something along those lines that promotes healthy roots.
      Also make sure your cutting tools a nice and sharp for a clean cut.
      Hope it goes well.

      When it comes to learning to hedge, just take your time and keep checking if you are straight. When moving your hedger up the face of a hedge, angle the blades slightly inwards and this will help to creat a easier and straighter cut, but with alot fo things, just have to keep practising.

    How can I make my hedge more fuller from the bottom?

    • @mowtime
      @mowtime  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Luis
      Having a thick hedge depends on a number of factors. Position (how much sun it receives). Whether the plant had been trimmed early in growth to promote thick growing etc. A common problem is the hedge will grow thick on top not allowing sunlight down to the lower portion, hence thinning out on the bottom. A way to thicken the lower section unfortunately is to give the top a hard trim down and allow sunlight through through to basically start growing the hedge again. Just make sure to feed the plant (bother slow and quick release fertiliser) well pre and post trim.
      I hope that was of some help. Keep me posted with how you go.

      Conifers are a lovely variety of plant. Very popular for good reason.
      When reducing a conifer, you can just lop it off at the height you want. If you are removing a lot, than I would recommend giving the plant a good liquid feed two weeks prior just to make sure it is healthy and ready to take the chop.

    Is there a reason for step 2 - Finish poorly cut branches with clean sharp cuts. ?
    would it still grow if you did not do step 2 ?

      Hey mate
      Yes it still will, but this just decreases this risk of diseases forming and also helps with new growth. Murraya are pretty hardy, so you can definitely get away with out doing it, but I recommend at least going through with some sharp secateurs and clean cutting the most poorly cut branches.
      Thanks for watching.
      Have a great day. 👍 😀

    Yes it is a pain in the butt...cutting..clean up.. I like to keep mine about 5 ft tall and 36 in. Wide I just walked in the front and the back mark it with spray paint and cut from there thinning and topping out, the problem I have found that other trees and poison ivy work their way into the bush then and it's hard to get out between all the runners..grrr... I don't I don't know what kills Poison ivy and other trees but won't kill the Privits..

      Hey mate.
      Yes that is a pain. Most of the time have hand dig it out. Thats what I ahve done in the past. Or possibly paint the leaves with glypho.
      Happy new year. 😃

    Hedge is a mess he’s thinned it out on the side just a bit too much going to take years to restore that back to full again

      Hi Alan
      I think you may have missed the point of this video. It is demonstrating the process of performing a reduction on a hedge. Which means pruning it right back to where it needs to be in order to continually maintain it at that point.
      Hope that was helpful.
      Have a great day.
      Thanks
      Ben. 😃
