      @@ceedaddy The problem with that is that they still need trimming, and they smell like cat piss. The people who built my house planted these things all over the place, and they stink so bad I am contemplating ripping them out. Plus, they are damn huge, and I, as a 5'5 woman, I need help trimming them. They are still better than the monstrosities in this video, but they are not without their flaws as well.

      It's a beautiful house and the shrubs are such an eye sore. I would've removed all of them and planted smaller shrubs that don't block the view out the window and not plant anything next to the garage.

    • @sparky6086
      @sparky6086 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Would've been best to cut them to stumps. It's hard to kill bushes, even if you try, and the stumps would quickly grow, almost as if new ones were planted.
      This would be a happy medium between expensive complete removal, and the just enough to not do the job/just enough to piss off the neighbors, which this video shows.
      Also, leaving them tall and out of proportion with the house leaves the house with that "abandoned" look, which it began with.

      We had yuccas at a rental we lived in, in Melbourne, Australia. We let them grow, when they reached the roof, we lopped the tops and planted them. By the time we left, it was a wall of yucca over the front window. When the yuccas were small and sparse when we first moved in, the front room would reach in excess of 50 degrees C in summer. It was bloody hot!! Leaving them there may be a shade thing, and it will help to keep your house cooler is summer. But yeah, you’re supposed to trim them for the winter to let the light in!!

    I like that you pointed out access to utilities. As a utility worker that used to work as a residential installer, I HATED dealing with the overgrown and usually prickly bushes the homeowners would constantly neglect. I cannot stress enough for people to keep the growth around their home trimmed back so a tech can service their utility connections, hang lines, etc. without getting scratch up or soaked by wet plants. Thank you for that.
    I would add: people, when you want the home to look nice, don’t let the brushes or trees cover windows or lights. It encourages mold growth by holding moisture, it hides people trying to break into your home, and it blocks sunlight and fresh air.

      I could not agree more, they should never be higher than the lowest point of the window trim, and at the corners they should be at least three feet below the soffits/eves, I have seen rats use trees and large shrubs to access the roof/attic. An apartment building I lived in I could hear rats in the attic, the management cut the trees back away from the building by about 3-4 feet and when I went out that evening on my balcony for a smoke I could see DOZENS of rats in the tree looking up at the roof like they were trying to judge whether or not they could make the jump. There was a dead rat on the ground the next day too, tried to make it and failed. Landed on the patio below my apartment.

Had them in my home in Tennessee and they were the first thing I ripped out and I rarely rip out plants unless I can find them a new home. But these things are awful in my opinion.

    Honestly, you made it look much better. You were also honest explaining how when you cut off that much at once, it just does not look nice until the fill leaves grow back.
    Personally, if it were my home, I would have cut the shrubs in front of the garage and windows down even more, to waste height, but thats more a taste thing. In the short term, it would look even worst, but give it a couple of months after fill-leaves grow back, then it would start looking nice.

    I just did a quick scroll through the comments and didn't see any mention of it, but I think you saved this woman thousands of dollars on future repairs. The shrub on the corner, while attractive in composition, was going to start rotting the fascia and eaves, not to mention the roof. Whatever you charged was well worth it, from the perspective of a home owner's wallet.

    I've used an electric B & D trimmer for years. It's been a workhorse but I no longer am, and wanted to make my job easier. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG Around the corners, the small side yard etc. was a pain to run the cord out to, so I bought this thinking I'd use it for touch-ups and hard to reach places. Well, I haven't used the corded one since!This is so light weight and so much easier. It has all the power I need because I start wearing down after about 20 minutes and I haven't run out of battery yet. It takes about two hours to charge. I've used it about twice a week for a month and still have line left too. My favorite feature is the blade inside the shield that keeps the line trim to where I don't even have to think about it. You can see from my pic that it's been heavily used and I probably should clean it more often. Very happy with it.

    I would have cut the center one in half horizontally. It will grow and can then be made into a nice hedge. The one at the garage, needs cut down more in height as well. As for the one on the right corner of the house, it needs to match to the garage height to balance the look. Done this a lot of times. JMHO

  • @hebneh

    I've never understood why "foundation plantings" are considered so necessary by so many people. Large woody shrubs shouldn't be placed close to houses like this. If you really want them, put them far away from structures or paths or driveways. There's no way they won't get too big eventually, and become a problem, like the ones in this video.

  • @Poxy_lynn

    Good job with what you were given. Could you have cut the bushes down to like half of what they were to try to salvage that? Or would that have turned into a much bigger more expensive job? If I was the home owner I would be totally fine with cutting them down below the garage light (midway through garage height) and having them all the same size across the yard. I feel like maybe they look goofy bc they’re all different heights?

      Copper Creek Cuts Lawn Care unfortunately I had to stop as apparently a bunch of wasps have moved into my back yard hedge. I’m allergic to stinging insects so I couldn’t risk it. Any tips for getting around them? My hedges look goofy half done!

      RAID! They have cans that shoot from 20 feet away so you don't have to be near them when you spray.

    Very bad out of control hedges. I totally agree with your decison to do step one, getting the hedges to a point where you can later work with them to get back to hedge form. Thank you! I will be showing this to my mom!!! Maybe now she will allow someone to work with her hedges 😁

    Looks like variegated privet. Whoever thought it was a good idea to plant those in rose locations know little about landscaping.

    Well, it's "better". . . but they all really should have been removed. Way, WAY too big, even after trimming. Quite the job for the ECHO though! Looks like it handled the job quite well. And that was the purpose of this video, right? Good job ECHO! Now go get the chain & pull them out. LOL!

      Haha, very true, and I don't disagree! Any deeper on the cuts and I would be getting into branches and growth NO hedge trimmer could handle! So, like you said, I had to balance expectations with my desire to produce this video! :D

    Incredible transformation for how bad the bushes were. Very nice explanation on everything.

    Would it be better if the home owner waited till the “winter” dormancy, then cut them to “waist” height? What variety is the shrub?

    • @CopperCreekCuts
      @CopperCreekCuts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably a bit healthier for the plant, but it isn't in danger of dying. It is a chinese varigated privet.

      Better yet, cut them to ankle high, then dig out the roots.

    I miss gardeners that actually prune things.

      Paul Camara is one you would like, he prunes things.

      Pruning those shrubs down to that size would take forever and would cost a lot more haha

    I moved into a home given to me by my father and it was a huge mess and anyone I called out basically just mowed the grass and left....vines on electric box overgrown hedges so bad they grew through the fence and created almost a new one on the other side. Trash and old tires..Sidewalk covered in overgrown grass and driveway with huge patches of grass...I gave up on calling landscaping businesses and saved for tools...I have a hedge trimmer but it was so slow and I felt I wasn't making progress so I just hacked stuff down with a machete and it looked terrible but its growing back now and hopefully I can do a better job hedge trimming and have more patience since I'm new to lawn maintenance and still have alot to learn...i enjoy your vids and learn alot

      Grunf ! I agree with you. Those shrubs (not trees) should have been kept low and they would have become thicker with foliage. If they had been maintained they would look lovely. But now, I would rip them out and put in boxwoods.

    Man, that trimmer's blade is going to need a good sharpening after this job!

    I was told it’s best to go bottom to top. Also, directional sweeps away from the body seems more safe. These look great though! Thanks for the share.

    cheaper to pull up and re-plant. those hedges were never meant to get that big

    • @CopperCreekCuts
      @CopperCreekCuts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not in this case. I mention I gave them a discount, mainly because it was a great showcase and proving ground for the ECHO. It would have been much more for me to pull the probably dozen clusters that formed all those bushes, haul them over several trips to the dump, then purchase enough new plantings to fill the empty space. Actually now that I say all that I don't think replanting would have been cheaper even without a discount! XD

      Actually, this plant is meant to be that big. I'm in the southeast and these plants get huge over time, bigger than what you see here. Whoever put them in front of this house didn't know what they were doing.
