As the old guy said in an interview later, in a sociaty where women can have an abortion for any reason (even if the fetus is healthy) why sould we say it is wrong to get an abortion because the fetus has Down Syndrome? And it is not Iceland that is "eliminating" these fetuses it is the mothers making an desision about what they whant for them and the baby. (Sorry if my english is bad)
@Jack der Hauptsturmführer False, the unborn did not chose to be inside the woman's body, the woman put him/her there. A stranger entering your house if you left the door open involves the stranger willfully entering your house. The unborn child did not willfully enter the woman's body, it was the woman's doing that put the child there, your analogy is wrong, the equivalent would be if the woman left the door open and dragged someone into her house. A trespasser is someone who enters your property without your permission. A child doesn't enter a woman's womb, a woman puts the child in her womb.
I don't see the issue here. They aren't forcing the parents to abort. They provide the scan and let the parents choose. In the end it should be up to the parents and it is.
I wouldn’t say it’s an issue. Just saying maybe people are too selfish with these things? I mean, do talk to some with Down syndrome and ask them. They are humans like the rest of us. I’m pro choice but I think I’d accept my planned child the way they are
@@Brewski203 Long comment ahead It ain't selfish to abort them in fact it would be selfish not to abort them. No child should live with any severe mental or physical problems. I remember two kids back in school who had these problems, one couldn't breath without a tube and couldn't speak possibly not even think and always had to have someone taking care of them at all times or they could possibly die. The other kid couldn't see because he was born with messed up eyes, had to wear a helmet and I think strapped down because he would punch himself nonstop and also couldn't speak or possibly think either. Those kids are possibly gone now but they shouldn't have to suffer like that because their parents were selfish and didn't abort them.

How "independent" are they really? I used to play sports with a kid that had two parents with mental delays. He wore dirty clothes and was dependent on others for rides. Nice kid, nothing against him. We picked him up from his house at times for practice. I stepped inside his house once to see it filthy, even broken glass on the floor. His older sister was dropped out of school and already had a criminal record at 15. I always wonder what happened to him. I wish I would've told my parents. Poor kids.

Does this look and sound bad? Of course it does, abortion is never a rosy thing but in defense of my country i think it's unfair to blame the state for this. We are simply giving people the option to take a few tests to which they can skip without facing any pressures or penalties. The test is there for those who want it. It's the parents who are making these decisions and it's up to them and them alone to decide on this.
@@The_Daily_Tomato Life begins at conception. Saying that a fetus is different to a child that has been born is like saying there is a difference between a child and an adult.
Terri Forhell It would be easier if there were more "unhealthy." children. Though many people with down syndrome can't directly benefit society. Those who come in contact with them i.e. parents and siblings, often grow to make massive contributions to society because of the character traits instilled upon them during their time with their disabled family member.
In what world is stopping down syndrome a bad thing? Is it not true that people with down syndrome are more prone to having heart defects, are more prone to infections and a bunch of other conditions and hardships? Why would you choose that over having a healthier kid?
TheKnowerseeker That's like asking a cat if they're happy they have a home. Of course. They don't have to do anything. They don't have to ever contribute. They are likely an inconvenience more times than not, yet it's accepted because of who they are. They may or may not be nice, but it's cool because of their mental capacity....etc...
Stopping down syndrom is a good thing, but actively killing down syndrom people is very bad. It is not stopping the disease it is genocide of people who have abnormalities.
US America is one of very few developed nations that intentionally execute adults that have broken certain laws - after subjecting them to years, usually decades of a torturous wait for the actual killing. The same holier-than-thou nation is trying to dictate to other developed nations how to run their affairs regarding a practice that is also a choice for most women in the US: Pregnancy termination. Please note that the vast majority of abortions, anywhere, are for personal reasons. Terminating Down syndrome fetuses is only a tiny, minuscule fraction of pregnancy terminations.
The thing you folks outside the US seem to never notice is that the US has a larger non-homogenous population. We don't all bible thump and think solely based on emotion and superstition. And to be clear we do infact have one of the highest rates of DS terminations in the West. Eugenics can be a force for real good, as opposed to self-righteousness.
@Halli: Well said. Moreover, in the US families, even with small children live on the streets. No proper social security net, no proper health care for everyone. It seems the prolifers care for unborns, but don't for born children.

From most of the comments opposing this, it seems like people against the abortion of children with Down Syndrome only see the cute, happy kids with Down Syndrome in documentaries and in the news, *but that's far from the reality*. For every one kid with Down Syndrome leading a relatively healthy life and is smiling and happy, there are nine kids at the other end of the spectrum living, and letting their families live, in pain and misery. Most people with Down Syndrome have very severe health issues, not to mention that they are often strong-built, dangerous, aggressive, have insatiable appetite, and get Alzheimer at the age of 30 or 40 (most don't make it past the forties). Why waste the best forty years of your life--dude, how many forty years are there in your life--when you're young and healthy to raise a child with the Downs? Let's face it, a kid with DS isn't what any parents want when they decided to have kids---they want the healthiest, most beautiful, most intelligent kid in the world, or at least a healthy, beautiful, and smart kid. It's selfishness of you that, in order to satisfy your ego and "moral" high ground, you choose to inflict a pain on a person for their whole life, and inflict misery upon yourself and his siblings too.
Nope. I see the full grown adults that need a constant caregiver. I see the 50 year old with the intelligence of an 8 year old. I see the woman in her thirties who cannot even speak coherently. And I see that they are all just as worthy of life as you. And worthy of dignity. If you cannot see that, then you are the one we as a society should be casting off and ignoring.
Down syndrome is not a guarantee of suffering. Everyone has sufferings in life….no life is free of suffering. To be loved is the most powerful thing a human can have in life and I think we need to open our eyes that those who are different deserve love too. Most can enjoy fulfilling lives if they’re given the love they need to get there.
I live in the US, the fact that we have to fight for abortion right is ridiculous. We would have saved so much money in our country if we let mothers choose to terminate their pregnancies.
Blame it on pro-choice "Independents" and Republicans. Basically, all it would take is to stop voting Republican to pertinent offices, and no one would ever have to submit themselves to religious freakos over this issue. However, you guys don't do that, voting them in mid-term elections to "even things out," for instance. So I'm afraid this wrangling isn't going away anytime soon. Republicans need to pander to this issue. A rationale even a 14-year-old can understand: at least a third of their base are constituted of religious nuts. If they don't pander to it, they don't get their votes, their donations, in short, they don't win elections. Some would be surprised how many Repubs don't actually personally care about abortion but feign they do, 'cause that's how they gain leverage to win contests. Not very different from a great deal of politicians who cater to what people want to hear, not what they believe in. Although I don't understand what is so extraordinary about Republican leadership, I respect voters who have other issues taken into account when voting for them. Nevertheless, if you're eager to leave your sister, daughter, or female partner imperiled at the ends of controlling freaks and do nothing, I question what sense of responsibility you even have.
It’s eugenics and far from a good thing. I’m disabled as well and I have friends who have Down’s syndrome and yes they are people too 100% worthy of living.

Andrea Abbott I am glad that everything worked well for your daughter. But down syndrome is a complicated thing, you can have one individual with downs that almost shows no sign of it at all and on the other hand you can have on completely opposite. It is not an easy decision to make but at the end of the day the parents decide what to do, they will have to live with that decision and it is nobodys elses business. I wish you and your daughter all the best.

Andrea Abbott She will also likely be dependent on special treatment as well as others to live. This is not a productive member of society. Plain and simple.
Hi there! Because Down Syndrome is a chromosomal mutation and not a disease or a gene, we will never be able to eradicate it. Even if every single person with Down Syndrome was eliminated, people would still be pregnant with children with Down Syndrome. It’s a chromosomal mutation, meaning that it will ALWAYS be with us, no matter what we do. Shouldn’t the scientific solution then be to accommodate these people instead of trying (and failing) to terminate them for thousands of generations? Something to think about! Feel free to ask questions; I’m a biologist with a special interest in chromosomal mutations and translocations.

Absolutely disgusting. Families of kids with disabilities have enough to deal with already they don’t need any judgment or saying their kids are a waste of resources. Please do not have kids ever.
No doubt that DS children or adults can be the sweetest people you will ever meet; however, parents who are knowingly give birth to a disabled child are very selfish and needy for attention because they are not looking into the future of that child, but wanting to make themselves feel good! There is no garantie that the child will be taken care off after the parents die. Siblings have probably their own lives then and are forced to put the DS sibling into a facility - we all know it will be a lot worse from there on!
Okay, but as a religious person, I feel religion should be left out of that decision and discussion. Your religion and my religion should not be the principles for which other people live their lives
Notice how they hardly show adults with Down Syndrome, and they never give general statistics about life outcomes of these people. It's actually disgusting how they hide the truth.
If were being fair to Iceland the population size is smaller than most major cities in the United States who it was compared against and there are different abortion laws in different countries so this should be kept in mind to avoid bias. 100% to me for a counter like Iceland therefore is not surprising and it also needs to be considered the economic situation of the country as raising a child with a disability that can range from one end of the spectrum to the other can be expensive. If most working class families discover a child has a complication that is life long and expensive and could cause distress to the family or the child would it be unfair to abort it?
These women arent forced into their decision. Its hard to raise kids that are healthy, now if a person is born with ds then that is a person. Basic universal human rights apply. We need better education. There is not a “gene” that causes DS. Instead, it is a chromosomal translocation mutation. This means that it randomly occurs within the gamete cell production. This isn’t hereditary, meaning two parents cannot pass this gene down like eye color or other genetic markers. DS is a mutation, meaning that we will never be able to eliminate it from the gene pool. In thousands of generations from now, even if we terminate every single person born with DS, people would still be able to carry children with Down Syndrome. It’s a chromosomal error, not a gene. Hope this helps. You should have learned this in high school…
Why? In general you can’t “eliminate that gene” it just happens as a mutation. And that gene doesn’t affects negatively a person totally as they can still study, work, love and reproduce just like any other human.

I don't intend to sound bad or anything, but to be honest, I don't really see the reason to try to keep people with disabilities, specially genetic Syndromes, existing at all, like, yeah, they are still humans and have our same rights, but, most people don't abort their child once they discover he or she has a disability because they think it is morally wrong, and there really isn't nothing wrong about it, it should be seen as morally righteous -What is that child bringing to the world? Will they be of any use to society? Will they be able to something important for the world?, Of course not, they wil be only a charge to their parents, they can't be left alone, that be dangerous and irresposible, would you allow someone with Down's Syndrome to drive? Would you allow that person to be your doctor? Your surgeon? Of course not -What about their parents' happiness? I wouldn't ve happy with a child like that, not at all, they'll basically ruin everything else in my life, yeah, they might be cute and be my child after all, but what? I'll never be proud of them, I'll just be constantly worried about their wellbeing because they can never be left alone, and they'll grow old as I grow old too I'm sure people don't abort them because they want to look "Inclusive", "Accepting", "Merciful", that's a whole lot of crap, they are just self absorbed and think they have the Moral High ground
people can think that my comment is cruel I don't care! BUT honestly I think that it shouldn't be a choice! I think that if it comes back that the child has down syndrome that they should have to have an abortion! There are many reasons for my opinion! First as awful as it sounds, they are a dream on the economy. The money that goes out for disability could go towards things that are much needed! And before anyone chimes in and says they also work, yes they do but they still collect a check while they do it! Also just because a few parents are saying they're okay with it, the truth is I have talked to hundreds of people who wish they would have been able to have an abortion! Because it's very stressful on a family to deal with someone who has that. It is also unfair that we in society are forced to have to deal with them, like at restaurants when we're trying to relax and enjoy our dinner, we are forced to listen to them scream or misbehave and we're supposed to overlook it! Our children in school get in trouble if they say anything out of the ordinary to these children, and if one of these children attacks or is mean to our children they get away with it, but if our children fight them back they get into a lot of trouble that's unacceptable! A lot of them also use their disability as an excuse to behave anyway they want to, I know that for a fact because I've had to deal with some that did that, even though they knew what they were doing was wrong!
You’re still disgusting by pushing forced eugenics. Sadly it’s true that some people with disabilities especially those raised by rich families with connections they use their disability as an excuse. But I’ve also seen kids with disabilities get expelled/suspended from school they just are given more chances than a “normal” kid. Like I’ve heard kids with autism or behavioral issues getting expelled from school for assaulting teachers or classmates they just won’t be expelled if they only do it once. People shouldn’t use their disabilities as an excuse to behave likd that but pushing eugenics is absolutely not the answer. Please don’t have kids ever.
Umm this is absolutely disgusting. I have a rare form of Down syndrome and autism and yes unfortunately some people suffer a lot more than others. But that doesn’t mean life isn’t worth living. So should a woman be punished if she chooses not to abort? Also no one should be able to attack anyone and not get in trouble regardless of disability it’s 100% unacceptable. I’ve seen parents of 2-3yr olds tell their kids hitting is wrong so an adult with the mental development of a young child should still be told the same. Problem is some parents and teachers do the bare minimum and let them use their disabilities as an excuse since it’s the easy way out. But still no woman or family should be punished if she chooses to have a child regardless of disability.
I have a 40 year old granddaughter who was born with Down Syndrome. If all 17 of my grand children, she is the most kind, loving, sweet, caring and giving of any of them! It has been an honor to be her Grammy and everyone in her extended family feels the same about her. Life would have not been as bright or happy without her. She’s the biggest blessing God ever gave us. Shame on any society that approves of abortion a child period!

Most people who procreate responsibly and fairly on the planet today will hope to have just two healthy happy children who grow to be healthy happy members of their community and bear them healthy happy grandchildren. Most people with a disability wish they were to exist instead without it. We are not biologically very capable of choosing our own deaths and when you ask someone if they wished they did not exist, that's how they view it. The reality is that if you were terminated before you had a chance to bond and influence, there would be only the brief psychological hardship on your parents. Meanwhile, another you, will have been given the opportunity to exist, with a sibling who you can love as an equal later in life rather than a perpetual loved bigger child. Someone you can depend on to help with your own family, bear cousins and care for your ageing parents. This other person may not exist, be killed pre-emptily if you were, we pre-load families with other people who spend their lives wishing they were normal. For the religious who believe in a soul. Perhaps that same soul will be given a different host body. If we terminate the bad host bodies, the souls will not be able to get allocated into them.

The human is far from being a perfect product, but there is a growing psychosis within our species of its physical infallibility, witnessed in the attempt of eradicating the abnormalities that would survive the birth process and therefore became living beings. A trek through a country like India would reveal many "undesirables" that western culture would decimate, but even in a caste system they are allow to BE and often are see as Gifts from God. This occurs even in impoverished regions where life is cultivated with dedication and Love. So there is at work a deceptive mindset that strives to eliminate any trace of our freakish biology and give us the illusion that we can have control of what comes and goes - or what comes in and goes out . . . But wait, what about mortality. That's what we really want to talk about but don't. Death still comes to all of us survivors that were deemed okay to "live". All who wax so eloquently could have been conceived with Downs and then your voice would have been taken away too. So much fancy logic . . . but such an incomplete picture like a sky without a sun or more like night without stars. We are missing many participants in this TH-cam gladiator arena, but they have passed on by way of the slaughter. Bullied in death - bullied in life, and so the hallmark of our species is heralded in how we take care of the "least of these". The down and outers still root for the underdogs.
Disagree all YOU want, you haven't explained why it is immoral. It is only if it is forced on others. This is not that. No one is being forced to participate. You don't even have to get screened if you don't want to. No one is killing off patients in mental wards or old folks' homes or disability centers. Parents are simply making a decision to abort their OWN offspring if they believe the child will be more disabled than they are willing to allow. It's not really eugenics as it has previously been practiced, but you've not even explained what makes eugenics immoral. You're just asserting your opinion as superior to someone else's. That's not how reason OR morals work.
Not really. They are preventing people from being born and having to live with complications for their whole lives, not to mention the struggle of the family. IF you want to have a kid with a defect like this then by all means, but it is not easy for anyone to deal with it.

I think the way some people talk about is unwarranted and even wrong. However it is not wrong to spouse you couldn't possibly take care of a child with Down syndrome. Be it as it may, the world is a cruel, hyper-competitive one for a child with potentially overwhelming issues.
@@jacquesvilleneuve8391 I think it’s wrong and arbitrary to say that. There are plenty of parents who can argue that they can’t take care of their healthy newborn. Wouldn’t justify the killing of either. The world being cruel doesn’t justify killing anyone imo. The world is cruel for everyone. And if someone will be disadvantaged in this world because of that then they need more compassion and care, not dismemberment and death.
@yepyep5006 Not only is the world "cruel," but the normal world pose challenges for anyone who can't do basic tasks themselves, such as many children with Down syndrome. I dont think you should force someone to have a severely disabled child to take care of for the rest of their lives, engendering misery and pain. If we could screen how severe a child with Down syndrome would be, then I would probably call for a more sensed approach as it relates to aborting solely on grounds of disability. Nevertheless, as we don't know how on the spectrum they'll end up, to me, a choice to abort is non-controversial.
A fetus is not a child and abortion is a human right. And some mothers maybe don’t want a special needs kid due to ethical or economic reasons because a DS child will need constant care their entire life (and once you as a parent get too old, nobody will be able to care for the child) or might feel that its not right to let a DS child live in a society thats sadly not made for them or doesn’t treat them with respect. The mother has the right to decide over her own body and remaining part of her life, its wrong to force women to give birth to a child they think they wont be able to be the best possible mother for or afford. Let women choose and make prenatal screenings universal so more parents get to make these choices.
Down Syndrome is a genetic developmental disorder. Why would you WANT a disorder? Loving someone with a disorder is different from preventing it from happening. If someone already has a disorder, of course, you love them regardless. But would you intentionally give them that disease? I'm type 1 diabetic, I live with it and make the best out of it. But do i want it? Would i choose to have it if i didn't have to? Of course not. If your answer is "no" i wouldn't GIVE someone a disorder or disease, then I ask you, why? We as humans work towards being healthier, living longer, expanding our knowledge... disease is a part of life, but no one "wants" it if it can be avoided.
Sorry, John, you need to be strong now... God doesn't exist. The same goes for Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny. If you believe in god, fine, you do you, but don't push your believes on others.
Brad Cooper Nah. It's for the people that will be left with the burden after the parents pass. It will be for the taxpayers that pay more for their special education. It will be for potential qualified employees that will be cut out because of equal opportunity. It will be for more tax dollars that pay for their lifelong disability checks. For everyone except their love blinded parents....THEY ARE A BURDEN.

Some parents are not in the position to handle or provide for a child with disabilities and they should not be forced to parent or birth if they don't want to. It's an espectrum some are not compatible with life. It's their body not yours!
eugenics is not entirely a bad thing... tax money having to support the disabled/terminally ill could have been used to reduce poverty.. the difference is that a euthanized fetus doesn't have to suffer, whereas a poor person or a living disabled has to live with his situation. think of quality of life over clinging onto life for the sake of it
As the old guy said in an interview later, in a sociaty where women can have an abortion for any reason (even if the fetus is healthy) why sould we say it is wrong to get an abortion because the fetus has Down Syndrome?

False, the unborn did not chose to be inside the woman's body, the woman put him/her there.

As cold as it sounds elimination of that gene is needed
And that gene doesn’t affects negatively a person totally as they can still study, work, love and reproduce just like any other human.

people can think that my comment is cruel I don't care!
No one should be forced to carry a pregnancy to term, but no one should be forced to have an abortion either!
They ended suffering.
This is so awesome!!

The fact that every body claps at this in the comments, not realizing they are human beings, and their lifes are more important than money or parents spectations for their children is beyond me.
Let's just stop treating children in general like a disease. It's a vile perspective.
These days, the only thing people care about is money/success and sexual release. Kids get in the way of that. If you do have kids its a luxury at the bottom of your list after your career and income is peaking, like getting an exotic pet or something.
@@zad0k91 I don't think there's anything wrong with that, because why marry if you get divorced? why prioritise a disfunctional family over your career?
I'm ok with my disabilities!!!

Taking care of a child or adult with a disability isn't just expensive, even with government support, it's not enough
Also... what if a person with down syndrome wants to cook something but end up setting the kitchen on fire?🔥 They can hurt themselves or worse ⚰️☠️.....
People can take advantage of them... Like they can get scammed without even realizing it... Or people can take advantage of them like signing a contract without even realizing that it's a scam or unfair... Like they can be taken advantage without being aware that they are
I think this will save the government more money and resources.... At least..
And this last one worries so many parents.. what will happen after they pass away and who will look after their DS child? What will happen to them? Will they be okay? Will they get married? Will they be safe?? These questions worry so many parents who have children with DS....
The down and outers still root for the underdogs.
how is this different from eugenics
It's not and that's fine.
it's not really fine, eugenics is pretty immoral
I disagree.
disagree all you want, it still is
Disagree all YOU want, you haven't explained why it is immoral.
God bless you Momma, good job!

Heartbreaking.
Not really. They are preventing people from being born and having to live with complications for their whole lives, not to mention the struggle of the family.
IF you want to have a kid with a defect like this then by all means, but it is not easy for anyone to deal with it.
MR Howard It is the struggle of raising a child with Downs and/or other disabilities that makes a person or family grow like no other challenge can.
+Eli Lesch
I disagree partially. You can "grow" as a family and be just as close or have just as much fun without someone needing to have a disease. Again if someone wants to have a kid with a disability fine, but those choosing not to shouldn't be judged.

Even if you do not want a child with Down Syndrome, there is always the option of giving your child up for adoption instead of murdering them before they even have a chance to take a breath.
Who really wants to adopt a child with Down Syndrome? People who adopt children with Down Syndrome do it out of sympathy, but they never really want to--that's a fact--and they are a very minority. If you want, adopt a child with Down Syndrome, but don't tell me I've to feel guilty for choosing not to ruin the whole family's life by aborting the child with DS.

@@jennifervan75
I would argue the baby has not asked to be here neither to have DS therefore maybe killing it because of its down syndrom is selfish because it is more difficult having a DS child than a not DS child.

We all have struggles, pain and suffering but I don’t believe that it is a good reason to take away someone’s right to life. We can learn and grow so much through struggle. All life is valuable, more than gold. Life is not easy but there is so much beauty to be had and experienced. We need to support all families, especially those with special needs. We need to become communities that come together to support.
Right to "suffer" you mean
How many DS kids have you adopted since you love struggle so much ? You clearly haven't struggled much if you are so judgmental
@@norahumpage1179 how is valuing life judgmental? People with DS are not trash, they are human beings. It’s curious how you are the one who is judging that someone should die just because they have DS. I never wanted to take any tests with all three of my pregnancies because nothing was going to change my mind from having my children. I don’t have to adopt a child with DS in order to fight for their right to live. One thing has nothing to do with another. Secondly, you don’t know what struggles I have gone through in my life. A lot of people like to assume that you’re life is so perfect just because you are against abortion. Either way one thing has nothing to do with another. It doesn’t make it magically okay to take someone’s life away. Either human life has value or it does not. Having a medical condition doesn’t take your value away.
You have no right to take away anyone's choice. That is Judgmental. People have a right to chose what to do with their own bodies. This choice is not yours. I did not say people with DS are trash. Stop putting words in my mouth. The choice is up to the parents and families - not you.

Probably the most disgusting comment section I've ever witnessed. Some real demonic influence here... Kyrie Eleison.

Why would you want to eliminate it ? That doesn’t sound nice at all
Facts don't care about political correctness
