There is a cookbook from 1390AD called "The Forme of Cury" and I think you should really let the chefs and normals try to recreate some dishes from there. It is written entirly in an old form of english, and it would be hilarious to see the guys try to decipher what to do :D
No matter how many hints Ben dropps, I am lost and even after the reveal of the event, I am still clueless. But I do enjoy watching Ben cook and seeing the boy’s reactions.
I'm not entirely horrid at history but it seems the book Ben draws from skews heavily towards 20th century history and that's not my strong suit - it's often more sort of cultural references than what I think of as "real" history. ETA: Basically, yeah, this was within my lifetime, why the heck would I think of some fancy airplane flight that happened within my lifetime. I was thinking something to do with the EU. A now defunct plane that was a sort of dead end? Made history? I think it's too recent to say with any confidence whether it really did. So I got "Ken and Graham" in the previous one - I happen to be sort of accidentally collecting different editions of that book. The rest leaves me mostly lost. 🫤 And it's kind of a shame because I love the concept. Further ETA: Did not expect myself to get so salty about the Concorde, but apparently for some inexplicable reason I am. 😅 But I think mainly it's the disappointment - I watch Tasting History and Townsends, so Elvis & the Concorde were... a bit of a letdown. 🙄
I’m glad it’s not only me that gets no assistance from any of Ebbers’ clues 😂😂 I always feel really dumb when he gives the guys a hint, I still have no idea what the answer could be but the guys find the clues really helpful 😂😂
08:49 - and this is the only time I have ever maybe had an idea of what it might be and I think it's related to the concord, my grandparents used to visit France a lot and I always remember my Grandad who was an engineer having a bit of a fascination with it. One thing I remember is that he always told me it could travel x2 the speed of sound, and for some reason when Ben dropped that chopping board just something in my head clicked, but who knows!
I'd be amused to see the team reproduce menus from notable episodes of the original IRON CHEF and see what they think about which menu deserved to win.
Definitely more menus from history! How about a video on the French carrot and spinach things? They sound delish and moderately easy for use modern day normals. *My friends and family take great joy in reminding me I'll never be normal whenever I talk about Sorted Food.* 🤣
Got it at 6.30 when Ebbers said "The topic as a whole began in 1969" as I knew Concorde's maiden flight was in 1969. And, the earlier clue of 'between two nations' confirmed Britain and France 🙂 Sadly, I never had the cash to splash on a seat but would have loved it.
@Noble I mean yeah, spoilers. You insisted on reading comments where there were inevitably gonna be spoilers...and you got them. No one's shocked. Except you😆
My guess at 09:30 would be the First flight of Concord. The first clue was "Do you want to win or Toulouse", second was the year of 1969. Then the two countries France and Briton, then the bang of the sonic boom of the aircraft. Lets see how far off the mark I am.
@@SortedFood precisely! I always make my lunch before sitting down to watch. Today was some Asian inspired noodles. It didn't happen today but I love it when what I make lines up with whatever you guys are.
always love these. i can never guess the occasion, but its always interesting to learn both the history and the recipes. somehow keeps them both in my mind easier.
In the early 90's, as part of their retirement, my grandparents flew on a Concorde from London to Toronto. I have the souvenir package from the flight which contains the menu, swizzle sticks, stickers/decals, and numerous pamphlets.
I remember when shots of the filming of this episode were posted on IG and you asked what event it was, I remember commenting that I thought it was one of Concords flights, it was obviously too modern for the first half of the 20th century but the inclusion of a cheese plate and smoked salmon and caviar canapés really only led me to one place.
Excited to see the rest of the video but I think I've got it at 7:50 (thanks to some knowledge and confirmed by the verbal clues): "The Concorde Plane first trip over the Atlantic Menu". Why ? : French techniques everywhere + champagne + cheese plates. French chefs are involved (easy for me, i'm french). However it's not that exceptionnaly complicated for the era (plus the lobster salad has this "Nouvelle Cuisine" Vibe). Then the menu is not that difficult to cater : The lobster salad is obviously posh but very simple and can be prepared in advance and stored in a fridge, same for the fresh fruits and cheese. Even the beef main course can be prepared in advance and just re-heated at the last minute with minimal equipment. So that seems logical for this menu to be a kind of supersonic picnic. I might be wrong as soon as I press the Play button but this seens clear in my head. Let's discover how wrong I am.
Absolutely love everything you all do!! That being said....... I REALLY enjoy these history menus. While I haven't gotten any right, I'm hoping there will be many more to come!!
I knew it was something between France and Britain pretty much straight away. Because it would make sense for Britain to show what exotic things they could give to other nations as shown in out history but i would never had guessed a flight.
I got Concord around 3 minute mark, still have a menu, didn't know they were valuable, have a case of all sorts of Pan American menus as well. My parents worked for the airlines and I was on the 95 flight and all I wanted was fries and a coke (i was 9).
I love Jamie's comment at 2:45. It reminds me of my mother talking about a medieval recipe for Jugged Hare, which begins: First, catch a hare... 10:35 - the mention of cigars makes me think of Churchill, but I'm probably way off. Well, I was dead wrong, but it was fun! Yes, please do more of these!!
I was way off, I was circling around East and West Berlin coming back together… I will say even though I lost I still won, that menu is something I will have to try to pull off myself!
Yeah, I was also thinking fall of the Berlin wall. Couldn't think of a venue that symbolized peace between two nations though. Certainly not The White House, lol.
Knowing a little bit about the history of the thing at the center of the event (being vague to not spoil it for anyone) - I've seen a venue where it might have been served, in fact - every hint makes sense in hindsight. I know what the two nations are in this. And the small number of chefs versus the large number of diners absolutely makes sense. But the fruits completely threw me for a loop. I would never have guessed what the menu was for, and for the life of me I can't imagine how anyone got that right. But that might just be because I'm an American and wouldn't be as impacted by the event as you all in the UK.
8:00 minutes first flight of the Concorde, because that was a revolutionary event in air travel in 1969 and the between two nations clue since Concorde was a major collaboration between Britain and France. It was thought that supersonic commercial flight would open up the world and make people more interconnected... or it would've had the Concorde not been a bit of a commercial flop.
2.12 as soon as Ben said do you want to win or Toulouse. Something to do with Concorde. The first flight was from Toulouse in March 1969. I was going to say Treaty of Versailles when he pulled out the mango (I have NO IDEA why) but I didn't actually make that my first guess until Ebbers said the venue of the menu at 3:45. Now that's my official guess. 🙂

2:29 concorde As soon as Ben said, “do you want to win or to lose?” the plane nerd in me jumped out since Concorde first flew out of Toulouse, and is famed for being extra luxurious
2:13 Once I heard the “to win or Toulouse” I thought immediately of Concorde, then I heard the “harmony between two nations” i.e. like a flight path, and its beginnings from 1969 onwards, aerospace development, and the BANG like a sonic boom, I shouted Concorde each time. My dad has now text me to see if I’m ok for screaming Concorde from the living room at the top of my lungs
I could be so wrong…. Only just started the episode. But after Ben said “Five Course” and brought out the posh champers, I think maybe “Titanic First Class Menu”???…. We shall see 🤷🏼♂️
I thought it might be this but then I remembered that I actually do know some of the dishes served on the Titanic - and that they're surprisingly disappointing.
I'm playing along and just paused at 2:29 - I think it maybe the menu from Concorde. The hint that made me think this is when Ben said "to win or to lose (Toulouse)". Concorde was made in Toulouse and also made its maiden flight from there. I'll edit once I finish the video! EDIT: Yay! Got it right ☺️ great video guys
The maiden flight of the Concorde around @ 7:40 2nd clue of freedom, liberty and revolution gave me a big hint (all the French ingredients and talk of harmony between nations made it clear it involved Britain and France somehow); Sonic Boom at 8:33 makes it sure for me but I could be wrong.
Lol I was born in 94 and never learned anything past WW2 in history classes (and it was rushed) so my knowledge of events in the past 80ish years is limited to what I’ve heard people talk about and what I’ve happened to pick up during reading or watching something. There goes any chance that I’ll guess it right 😩
Mike is the most normal overall, Barry the most pretentious, and Jamie's taste in cooking is the most representative of a blue collar or agricultural worker.
@@no_activity Yes! I couldn't find the words to describe Jamie, but that's it perfectly! My daughter says that Barry and Jamie are almost not normals anymore because of all the know and can do. Mike, bless his heart, is definitely still normal and we love him for it!
@@mrs.thomas-usmcwife5686 my thought is that Mike is just as knowledgeable and competent as the other two, he just panics under pressure. I'm sure all three create excellent meals on a regular basis.
@@no_activity Oh yeah, I agree. When given the time needed they could all make some great stuff. However, that inner panic button Mike has makes him more normal and fabulous to watch.
Please....ABSOLUTELY do create more menus from history. The only one I will be able to guess correctly is the final meal for the first class passengers on the Titanic. I won't be very good at your game, but I'll sure try. Thanks.
8:32 Fall of the Berlin wall was my guess. Oh well, should have sticked with the flight. The plenty of seasoning for high altitude when your taste buds go kinda numb was a good clue at the start.
I didn’t guess it (was too busy taking notes on the salad), but I did see it, flying overhead when they brought one to Waco, Texas for the 1986 Air Expo. I was merging onto I-35 and had an excellent view!
Dear Ebbers, The cook on that steak is utter perfection. Literal pure perfection for that cut of meat. Yours truly, A guy that also has cooking skills. xoxo
Well done Jamie. I’d have sat here for the next 5yrs and still wouldn’t have got it. Hopeless at things like that. I lived in Battersea for 17yrs, under the flight path into Heathrow. At 6pm each evening Concorde would fly over me. Such a beautiful and graceful plane. I never once got tired of seeing it. Such a shame we don’t have it any longer 😢 Ben the food looked amazing. You guys have the best job ever!
Yes! We got it! We wracked our brains about what event connected to France in 1969 would involve food of that caliber. We recently watched a short documentary video about the Concord on TH-cam otherwise we would not have had a clue.
Got it at 4:09, when I remembered the word "concord" being a synonym for cooperation. He also said "to lose" earlier, which I think refers to Toulouse, which is possibly where the planes were built?
I would love to see a Menu or Benu! Is it a famous menu or one Ebbers has made up!
omg yessss, this would be such a great idea

The level of performance Ben has to do in order to slip in those clues seamlessly is honestly quite impressive.

I could be so wrong…. Only just started the episode. But after Ben said “Five Course” and brought out the posh champers, I think maybe “Titanic First Class Menu”???…. We shall see 🤷🏼♂️
My mind went there first too!
Aahh, he said 1969…. I am 57 years out 🤦🏼♂️
I thought it might be this but then I remembered that I actually do know some of the dishes served on the Titanic - and that they're surprisingly disappointing.
@@mikelaw4120 I'm thinking it's even more modern than that now tbh! Maybe 80s-90s?
I thought that too, but surely lobster + mango would only be invented in the more modern era where people can access both ingredients fairly easily
Loved this series! Please do more! Xxx
Good detective skills! 🕵
There goes any chance that I’ll guess it right 😩
At 6:33 I had it. It means agreement, but it was the combo of "Do you want to win or Toulouse?" plus 1969 👌🏻
My daughter and I have figured out that Mike is in most normal of the normals, Barry is the most pretentious, and Jamie is somewhere in between. Lol
I really enjoy this format lads, great work again!
I love this format and can think of a couple things that aren't so cheffy but still pretty good stories to tell. Silent night and truce in the forest
Amazing Jamie got it, I had no idea! 👍
I didn’t guess it (was too busy taking notes on the salad), but I did see it, flying overhead when they brought one to Waco, Texas for the 1986 Air Expo. I was merging onto I-35 and had an excellent view!
08:46 Concorde flight. Thought it was first flight rather than last trip. Ben dropping the board was a great tip.
Love this format!
Dear Ebbers,
The cook on that steak is utter perfection. Literal pure perfection for that cut of meat.
Yours truly,
A guy that also has cooking skills.
xoxo
4:30 - The to win or Toulouse hint helped. 🤣
Such a shame we don’t have it any longer 😢
Ben the food looked amazing. You guys have the best job ever!
As someone who loves food history, I would love to see more of these. Also you should collab with @TastingHistory
This might have been my favourite Sorted video for a long time, possibly ever. Thank you.
This is one of my favorite series that you guys have done-looks great and was interesting to watch.
Yes!
I got stuck thinking it was something to do with the Statue of Liberty. Symbol between two nations, French, heavy, port, freedom, etc...
Me too.
I had no idea but I sure enjoyed the video and I'd like to see more just like this.
3.39 as soon as Ebbers said the harmony of two nations did it for me (although I did think it was the inaugural flight!)
The bang of the chopping board nailed it for me: about 9:00 i was confident it was a transatlantic Concorde flight.
Love these types of video would love to se more of them❤️
@10:55- still no idea. The funniest thing is that I’m watching this for a second time, but still can’t remember the event. 😂😂😂
Loved this guys! I had no idea where it was from!
I had no idea on this one. But this show along with PIO are my faveeeee sorted shows!
These menus that made history are really fun. Please do more of them!
I love these historic menu videos, I never guess them right, but that only means they are more educational and fun to watch.
