I got so excited when I saw my apple peeler! I have that clamped to my bench at all times and I love it. But I was disappointed that you didn't see one of the coolest things it does. If you keep cranking the handle so that it goes all the way around to the starting point again, an arm comes out and pushes the apple off the spikes.

Ann Reardon's popcorns weren't rounded like this one, perhaps the amount of pressure can yield different results. In Southeast Asia, these rounded shaped popcorns are more the premium side on the market since you have to use this pressure device to yield the rounded result and it should be crispier.

    • @dutchdykefinger
      @dutchdykefinger ปีที่แล้ว +5

in all fairness, many of them probably have safety standards that could make them double as one when you use it alternatively,
the term hacking for using something functionally in a different way than its intended use existed long before home computers were a thing.
when you're in the torture business, you may similarly find some hacking (pun intended) here and there
kitchen appliance and torture device isn't a truly mutually exclusive category, could be both, sure, they're probably sold and advertised as kitchen appliances, but that's just a label they stick on it man, whichever target audience sells the most product, money makes the world go round, and observations seem to indicate that on average, people appear to engage more in the activity of cooking and preparing food, than they do in the activity of torturing people, it is what it is.
but if we're going to get worked up about the intended use of devices, you'll find that very little things are in fact torture devices,
when you think outside of that restrictive paradigm.... you will find that many, many things are torture devices in function, the possibilities are limitless.
gotta think outside the box when you don't want to put them inside of a box right away, and play with them a bit first.
if you're going to just indisciminately butcher and phone it in with little to no regard or respect for the process, you may as well let the machines take over, as there's no pride left in your work, instruments like these are.. instrumental in the true craftsman torture business

It's amazing for people who do home food preservation. If you are processing a hundred pounds of apples to put up for the winter or other foods that would typically be peeled before being cooked and canned, this looks like it would be immensely useful and definitely worth the real estate. The beauty of the popper is a bit lost on popcorn, which will pop on its own. The fun is in the grains that will only pop if heated under pressure like this, like wheat. Saw this all the time in Seoul in the late 1990s while there, but like @FrenchGuyCooking said, they're huge and go off like a cannon. Saw a mother and child walk too close to one once, not paying attention to the operator's whistle blast warning of the imminent pressure release. One thing to remember with the apple peeler is that apples were very plentiful in the US by the late 1800s. In the late 1700s you could go out to the frontier of the US(at the time this was in the Midwest of the country like Ohio) and get 100 acres of land deeded to you if you created a "permanent homestead" part of which included growing at least 50 apple trees. So basically every family in the Midwest US had at least a 50 tree apple orchard. To facilitate the growing of these orchards there were people like John Chapman(Johnny Appleseed) who went around pre-planting these apple trees all over the place so that when the homesteaders moved in they already had a head start on getting the orchards going meaning they would be deeded the land sooner. This left even more apple trees around.
It should also be noted that at the time apples weren't really used for eating; they were used to make cider which was very popular in the US at the time, and takes a ton of apples to make. Something like that peeler would save so much time back then.

For the apple peeler, as someone who has done agrarian living history interpretation, you have to think about a 19th century American farm. They probably have a few apple trees. They probably get several bushels of apples per year. Of course, not all of these can be eaten fresh. In 1897 families would have probably been drying a lot of apple slices as well as making cider, apple butter, applesauce, and probably canned apple pie fillings as well. Home canning was really beginning to hit it’s stride with several companies making jars and lids to use at home. In most of those applications the peel isn’t wanted. Set up one of the young’uns with that device there and you can have a barrel of apples peeled for you needs in no time! A lot of American homesteaders today actually use a similar device that can peel the apple, core it, and slice it into rings all at once. And the apple peels and cores aren’t wasted. Pigs and chickens love them!

I can't believe you didn't know the classy cutter! Literally everyone had one of these at home! It was one of those 'as seen on tv' gadgets and widely available on the market(stall) for about fl.7.50/10. You know how popular they were because they've been turning up in thriftstores for a while now. For 2/3 euros (Because the people who had these are leaving their house now...) they still work, better than anything electric now. And the spriralizer is absolutely 'AMAZING' 😉. I mean, its a piece of plastic that cuts through carrots and potatoes and stays sharp! And in the decade of the buffets that thing was gold! Saved so much time.
And yes, HTCT also tested the popcornmaker and it was great to see you do it too. Hey Jamie! You loved your bbq gloves so much! Well, this is another way to use them!

The apple peeler. When I was younger, my neighbor had an apple tree and since you tend to harvest the apples by the dozens, the fastest way to prep the fruit for pies, sauce, butter, and juice was this ancient tool. Our little neighborhood ate well during harvest season.

That apple peeler was a staple in my home growing up in the 80's because we had multiple apple trees in our back yard and garden, it was great for getting them all skinned for making apple pies, apple cobbler, canning them, making stuffed apples, apple sauce and yeah... That was all from just a few trees.

I have watched so many videos of this in action. It looks amazing. My favourites are where it's being used in situ - people popping vast amounts of corn in much larger versions of this at side-of-the-road stalls.
My understanding is that the popcorn is round because they used mushroom popcorn. When it's done with butterfly popcorn, it's the usual irregular shape.
The Mythbuster team (I can't remember what they're called on TH-cam) did not get the rounded popcorn. Partly, they didn't reach pressure quickly but they also did not use the rounded corn kernels.

Imagine your a 19th century American farm wife. You have a decent sized apple orchard, and gone harvest time your family harvests several tons of apples. A lot if that goes to market, some go into cider, but several THOUSAND apples still need to be peeled and processed for canning into apple sauce and pie filling. A peeler could save hours of time and multiple fingers. Definitely worth it!
