    "An insert has never killed an animal."
    While this may be true, I have technically killed a whitetail with an arrow shaft. I was shooting an 85gr thunderhead at a deer straight below me on a twizzler. Well, apon impact with the spine, the arrow deflected. The shaft broke behind the insert. The head clipped top of the back lung and exited at the top of the shoulder blade, but the shaft continued down lodging into the heart. The deer stiff legged, the blood pressure popped off the nock, and the deer bled out threw the shaft of the arrow.... quite an interesting experience, and technically, the shaft was what delivered the lethal wound🤣

      @Michael Ficarro There is most definitely truth in that statement. But, I've seen too many times that an arrow deflected. I've long been an advocate of shooting a heavier arrow with a stiffer spine. I'm just happy someone else has been compiling the data that supports my belief.

He's also a much, much better shot than I am. Well, I'll tell you that he has called me for help tracking 7 times in the last 10 years.... I've had to call him zero. Enough said.

    great stuff, I ordered these back in March 200g. Shot one at my foam target and it chipped. Contacted ToughHead, who kindly replaced it and recommended that I get a new target bc something metal must be inside it, causing it to chip, as the broad head won't just chip on its own. I changed targets. These fly great at my 654g set up, similar to the guy at the end of this video shooting that Aoudad!

    About the bent broadheads.. You can imagine how much power it needs to bend it pushing it towards a table. All that energy could be used to penetration.

  • @C.Adams82
    @C.Adams82 ปีที่แล้ว

    People really need to listen to RF about reducing the insert weight. Especially western hunters who may take long shots, 50,60 plus yes. I started using Iron Will's insert system. Using 25 grain insert with 10 grain collar , and it's titanium and steel no aluminum. Anyway the flight is phenomenal, if your looking for flat trajectory. I've looked at using the 10grain insert with the 10 grain collar but with a 200 grain broadhead I'm worried it might move around ,not enough weight. But your definitely on to something with using lower weight insert and going heavier on the broadhead.

    I have shot cutthroats and now VPA. I like VPAs lack of voids/pockets. How do these broadheads compare in length? I only saw blade length.
    Also why do they have the pockets? Ashby talked about not having abrupt edges to aid in penetration. I would imagine some of these pockets and edges would be similar to having a ferrule that is small in diameter than the arrow shaft. Just a thought?

    ranch fairy, I shoot mostly traditional archery. I’ve often wished I could have a single bevel broadhead with a cutting width greater than 1 1/8 inch. With efforts made to provide superior penetration, why can we not have a wider cutting diameter? Is it difficult to get a 1 1/4 broadhead to fly well out of a compound? I feel my penetration on white tails following the Ashby system could handle wider cutting diameters.

  • @bryanheimann5370

    Heavy inserts are longer, increasing dynamic spine and changing your arrow flight. So if you tuned out a given weight you probably want to keep the same insert. It might seem like splitting hairs but when you are shooting a lot of draw weight and a heavy arrow too, anything that increases the dynamic spine is a GO! And it makes a noticeable difference. But if you already tuned that arrow you probably want to keep the same insert length you tuned with too.
    I have some 200 grain .246 inserts that are 2.55” long. If you don’t think that will effect your dynamic spine you’re crazy. It’s almost like shooting a arrow 2.5” shorter.

      I think you should start a series. But do know, you are quite out of bounds for the standard guy running normal DW and DL.
      You are in the 1% and by your comments chipping at "60 pounds" quite ready to measure peckers.
      So your results will not be typical. If you do your series and lower DL and DW, I bet (remember I mess with a lot of arrow systems) you won't see the same results equivalently to set in stone. But I do know a pile of guys running heavy DW for cape buff and other big nasties in Africa. They don't seem to stand on this one, single, soapbox very long. They focus on the whole arrow and arrow flight.

    I am 76yrs old shot 2315 with nap spitfires for years and killed a lot of deer. I shoot a bowtec ss on comfort setting at 60 lb with 450 grains same nap spitfires no trouble shooting through both sides of a deer. My kid shoots comp 3d and shooting pin gap on unknown distances with heavy arrows won't put you in the winners circle. If you can't shoot through both sides of a deer with 50lb change your set up so it will. What you say with the charts and math on heavy arrows is correct. But it isn't the best set up for shooting bucks in the brush, been there done that if was I would still be shooting 2315.

    Challenge: go shoot an unknown yardage 3d course with your heavy logs then go shoot it with a 450 set up see what the difference in scores. Shooting bucks in the brush is a lot different than shooting pigs in a field at 20 yrds under a feeder.

    • @RanchFairy
      @RanchFairy  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Keep up the chippy comments. I ALWAYS say I use the feeders and pigs to replicate average whitetail distance hunting situations, allowing a ton of shots in live hunting situations, to study ON MEAT arrow performance.
      You probably missed that by not paying attention.
      Now, on the unknown distance BS.
      1. Between each pin is generally 5 yards (assuming 10 yard increment)......200FPS, 250, FPS, 300 FPS. Your brain gets used to the trajectory and your "guesstimate" if you practice....will be very accurate. (remember, I am OLD, we shot 2018 aluminums and 150 grain broadheads were normal when I started due to lack of weight availability and we whacked all kind of stuff).
      2. What do you say to someone shooting 450 grains and they can only pull 50#? Should they just stay out of the field even through they can shoot 50 yards but gaps are more open and trajectory doesn't hit YOUR predisposed "perfect"? If you are philosophically consistent you should say, yes, they should not hunt at all due to lack of speed.
      But you won't Logic requires introspection of your viewpoint.
      3. Your philosophy and my facts will always be at odds. I'm trying to build and study the most efficient killing sticks to fly at critters and penetrate in the most impact points (mistakes will be made by archers and animals can jump the string).
      You are trying to hit them and hoping it will penetrate. Free country, move on to the group of super archery folks you like to hear from.

    Yo RF, in the video at 4:53 you say that the bevel is 28 degrees but the website says they are a 35 bevel. I ordered a six pack of these and got to sharpening one with the precision adjust after missing a doe on opener, and it is a 35 degree bevel. I've been trying to see how it would be with the 28 bevel and I'm shaving off a bunch of metal, should I be worried about taking to much off? Because once I get to having to sharpen the others I'm gonna knock them down to a 32 or 30 bevel. Was there a reason why the Sirius guys made it a different bevel than what you said, and will the broadheads get updated to a 28 bevel? Just curious over here since I don't I've seen any comments about it.

    • @RanchFairy

      We had a significant issue with the steel temper, we lost a bunch of heads that will never be sold and had to change it. Put the tower at the highest setting and reset the bevel. Should be about 32 degrees on the precision adjust. The rest of the process is the same.

      We had a major tempering issue and would have lost about 50% of the heads. Unfortunately, they told me after they went into the store.
      Despite that. You can grind the edge down to the highest setting on the Worksharp. Since the edge is now tempered.

      @RanchFairy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They are not. I wanted to keep the cost reasonable. It's an excellent steel. The fun thing about steel is if the temper is not correct. S7 or kitchen knife. It doesn't matter. I've been amazed how much that matters.

    What is your opinion on bleeders? Seems to me the whole point of a single bevel is maximum off the charts penetration. Bleeders, it seems to me hinder this. Even if its a super small amount, they have to reduce penetration somewhat. Seems counter intuitive

    • @RanchFairy
      @RanchFairy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is untested formally. All of our kills with bleeders have shown no issues. But there hasn't been anything over 200 pounds and no hard bone impacts. Our blood rings are small...just to address your concerns.

      I went through the humerus of the shoulder of a 150 inch whitetail with a 125 grain single bevel iron will with bleeders at 35 yards and had no issues. deer died in sight and was plowing dirt the whole way

    If you reduce the insert weight you make the FOC better,right?

    • @RanchFairy
      @RanchFairy  ปีที่แล้ว

      So, if you increase the point mass and decrease insert mass you should land at the same place.
      HOWEVER, and this is a bit of minutea. The increased point mass will very slightly increase FOC, because yes, its more forward.
      I'd work on perfect arrow flight first before worrying about that.
      As noted. One piece broadheads have very limited weaknesses at impact. Much better system.

    • @jeffhays1968

      @@RanchFairy crossbow here. I ordered Sirius Phoenix 300 gr. 22 inch bolts and a field point kit and have deducted my 3 hunting arrows out of the lot that fly the best. To be honest the 200 gr. and 300 gr points fly exactly the same with the same point of impact to 30 Yards. Not tried out past that but since the flight and impact mirror each other roughly, I am going to go with the 200Gr. broadheads figuring it will up the speed some. I pretty much keep shots in the 40-50 yard max zone and most are under that. Now it's a question of do these single bevels fly close to the field point, hoping so. Minor adjustments I am sure will get us 'on point' I suspect.

      I love reading these comments. I own both now and side by side they are completely different. The RF ferrule is much bigger in diameter and smooth from tip to arrow. The cutthroat has a very sleek ferrule and then steps up to match the diameter of the arrow. I had a tough experience on an elk with a recurve due to this abrupt step up (I believe). 200 grain cutthroat next to a 200 grain RF, two completely different heads. They are similar only with the cut outs in the blades due to each company trying to achieve a longer broadhead at the given weight. But what do I know
