Listen to the Dudley podcast that you were featured in. It’s crazy how he tried to belittle you in just the fact you “haven’t taken any archery lessons” or know “proper form” and with that dismissed anything you had to say about arrow weight. I currently am running 510 grain arrows and that added 125 grains make a world of a difference. Thank you!

Dudley does state he is going to play devils advocate, he has done this on multiple podcasts prior to troy. Now maybe he tried to grill troy harder because he has seen the negative side come out in competition and they had differing opinions but they also had similar opinions on many parts of their discussion. I don’t think he meant bad by it and Troy didn’t look the least bit offended so take it as you will I guess.

From the few videos I have watched of Dudleys', he wants to convince everyone that they need to be a tournament archer and have perfect form to deer hunt. I am not a world class archer, nor will I ever be. My effective range is 25 and under. I also am getting older, not built like Arnold, so my draw weight is only 53 lbs nowadays.
Shot my first deer with my new heavy arrow setup, put right in the vital V at 15 yrds, because I wasn’t so afraid of my arrow hitting something hard and stopping.
Ended up heart shooting the deer and I watched him hit the dirt 20 yrds from where I shot him.
It’s not a 60 yrd set up for hunting out west, but for me, in the big, public land woods, it’s a great set up. I choose to have an arrow system that will allow me to get right in there with confidence. Most of us are not shooting 80 lbs and are not archery snipers. Thank you Troy for showing me a system that can keep me in the woods with a vertical bow at my age and stature.

For the record i'm a recurve shooter honey out west. I have killed one elk at fifty yards. All the rest have been under twenty five. And that's only like fourteen elk, it's true. Don't remember how many deer i've shot but I only remember one over 35.
I shoot arrows over seven hundred grains out of a fifty eight pound recurve. And it's totally fine.
I'll tell you I help way more people track than have to help me track. I usually just walk over and start gutting.

Two years ago I switched to this system and it has not failed me. 4 deer harvested using this system and I have watched all but one go down within sight. Keep teaching, haters are gonna hate.
Sent a 690 grain arrow topped with a single bevel straight through a bucks front shoulder last weekend. Buried in the ground towards the fletching. He expired in seconds. Couldn’t have done it if you didn’t teach me this stuff. Thanks Troy!

Troy, thank you for taking on the mechanical broadhead industry and pointing out their frailties. You're fighting against big money interests, companies who are making a fortune out of bow hunters with their slick marketing and big name front-men and I admire you telling truth to power. Keep up the good work!
It’s not so much the companies. It’s about the stick and shooter.
I use both fixed and mechanical on my testing I found that mechanical can only work well on 500 plus grain arrows or bolts with more than 12% FOC.
Fixed can work on anything. But do better on 500 plus grains with more FOC.
I've learned a lot from Dudley and I've learned a lot from Troy. Both men have shared information that has helped make me a more effective hunter. I hope both continue to share their points of view. I shoot single bevel broadheads and no weaker than a 300 spine arrow because of Troy. I shoot my bow twice a day and emulate what John teaches for accuracy. I have my "middle ground" arrow setup... I make adjustments based off what animal I'm pursuing. My success rate on recovering hogs in FL Swamps where blood tracking can be impossible went up dramatically thanks to Troys advice.. I moved my shot placement forward and used better broad heads...It worked for me. Thanks Troy!

Just shot my first deer with a bow since 2012. Was shooting 605 grains with a Magnus Black Hornet that was stropped to scary sharp (have a scar on my finger to corroborate). Took a 16 yard broadside shot, somehow shot directly between ribs on both sides into both lungs. I believe just about any set up would have killed the deer efficiently, but am very happy that I had a set up that would have performed very well even if it hadn't been a perfect shot. I do agree with a few of the things that Dudley and others preach, practice is just as important as an adult arrow, but why not do both? Perfect arrow flight, razor sharp broadheads, and a ton of practice just takes out as many of the variables as possible and gives me the best chance of success.
Troy, Deer & Deer Hunting put one of these out with 3 placements. The deer was quartered to slightly and the front leg was way back. One of the "preferred" shot locations promoted by D&DH was back of the liver/stomach! One was liver/back lungs. The other was okay, middle lung. I was shocked. No wonder the dog tracking facebook pages are going wild. People wanting to aim "behind the shoulder" no matter what is a major problem. Scanning the comments on the FB posts sharing the same photo was disappointing. Very few saw the obvious error.
Ranch has said multiple times that his shot placements are only for those shooting proper arrows. The vital v isnt that good with wet noodles and flappers
I love that illustration from deer hunting. I've been trying to tell more and more people to aim more forward. So many times I've been hunting and killed deer that I thought was more broadside and when I get to the deer see it was quartering way more. It's very simple.. aim for the opposite shoulder where you want it to come out. Great video

Started aiming farther forward thanks to you, broke my back a few years ago so picked up a crossbow and am slinging around 600-650 grain bolts, been using the sevr robusto 2.0 and have had great luck, broke the bone at the base of the scapula and complete pass thru last year on a 1/4ed too shot... thanks Troy, your the man!
Troy keep doing what your doing you are helping real hunters who pay for there own stuff not so called hunters who have everything paid for them .and I'm curious how many deer they loose a year from the crap they push.
I visualize the anatomy in 3D. Instead of aiming at a spot on the animal's hide (like a 2D flat target), I aim for the internal vital organs, then the angles don't matter. It has worked for me for 40 years.
I have found that people who can't accept the high FOC heavy arrow concept are those who just don't want to start the tuning process over. It can be daunting but holy shit. The results are unbelievable. It's worth the many hours of tuning and research.

I always have top of the line equipment,always. Always practice all year long, shot placement has never been an issue, equipment never an issue. I almost quit archery hunting before I was introduced to your info, I don't know, six yrs ago. I thought it was me, watching deer run off with my arrow, poor penetration, starting to shoot back because of it. I know I don't need 700 grain arrows to harvest a deer. You and your info gave me my confidence back and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love archery and almost lost my only true passion if it weren't for you. There's gonna be know it all's. You know what, they'll thank you too when they fail and need your it. Keep up the great videos. Remember you can only lead a horse to water. Some jack asses just won't drink

Could you do a video on crossbow bolts? After a shoulder 10-11 years ago I could no longer (gracefully) pull a bow. So I was introduced to crossbows and love it! I build 20” 625-650 grain 2 blade single bevel bolts and have never NOT had pass throughs. No matter the angle of the animal! I would still love to see you break down a bolt build and try it out on your text medium! A good 400fps and up now can be found at pawn shops for around $200! Then welcome to your next addiction!
I follow logic and reason that's why I watch ranch fairy. I think a lot of the guys trashing this channel are trying to steal some of your thunder because people want to buy your stuff and and set up their bows like you or at least with your guidance and not the other guys. Keep being the best place for bow info in my book.
Troy, It is soooo refreshing to watch your videos as I have been preaching this very thing for 40 years. Top of the heart. I honestly can't remember ever gut shooting a deer either. The majority of the archery target manufacturers don't help matters since the inserts are almost always set too far back and promote the 4 inches behind the V as a ten ring. Keep up the good work educating the flapper crowd. lol
That is why I never bought a 3D target. Started bow hunting in early 80's and just shot standard targets with 1-1/2" fluorescent dots for accuracy. I knew where the heart was and always aimed for it. Never lost a deer or hog and had short blood trails to follow if I wasn't able to see the animal drop. What gets me about the people talking bad about Troy is, they all seem to be on this kick about shooting elk at 80 yards +/- with 80 pound bows. When the majority of bow hunters I have seen are shooting at whitetails at less than 30 with less poundage. Hell, I'm a big guy and only shot 63lbs with a 32" draw length using old Easton xx75 arrows with 150gr fixed 3 blades. I did always sharpen them out of the package because I didn't trust them to be sharp enough.

You have done nothing but help people. I was introduced to Ed Ashby 25 years ago and have always preached to blades and heavier arrows. It has always worked and it has been a difficult journey persuading people. Worked in Archery Shop for three years and I pushed it so hard. It was always a fight with the owner. Thanks again for spreading the word.
Generally, speaking, we are personally taught to aim to far back on a deer kind of like center mass and while that will kill, there is much better area to aim at… I think a lot of people don’t understand dear behavior too much and or when to take the shot I think a lot of people just want to get an arrow in the deer and just chuck arrows….. just like you said in your video about the shoulder blade that’ll hinge, and that hinge happens a lot faster if the deer has its head down compared to upright… ever since I started aiming for the exit and where I want my arrow to come out, which is usually on the opposite side shoulder/arm pit area might kill success has went up a lot and they do not run very far

I’ve started to get back into archery after taking a 30 year break. Ran across your channel and I was doing it all wrong lol. 400 grain arrows at most, including the 85 grain g5. Fast forward to 2024 706 grain Sirius Apollos. Haven’t shot anything yet but it will be a pig 🐗. Stay true!
There’s really no debate here, Troy is right. That is where the best shot placement should be. He is only telling us your best chance of punching through is with a heavier arrow. Great info Troy
Idk how people don’t get this. I watched one video and was like “this makes perfect logical sense”…I live under a rock apparently and it took until this season to stumble upon “adult arrows”…I have a test kit on the way. Was shooting 478gr with coc blades. My goal is to hit the 650gr mark and run 200gr heads.

It's not discussed with any knowledge of the cardiopulmonary system or a focus on "how" lethality happens.
I'm not ready for a 1000 gr. Arrow. But adding a 100 gr. Brass insert and going to rear deployment mechanicals has definitely helped. Also, I now shoot a little lower and more forward now, alot more blood!!!
I did the same 520 grain with a 1.75 titanium expandable and went right throught the spine of a buck last weekend .... now the blades were bent but I just put new ones on lolol
I use Easton 1916 aluminum @27" with 200 grains up front out of a 43# long bow.2 blade broad head arrow weight 518 grains.The math works out to 22ish% FOC .they blow right through bone.I always wiat for a clean shot and pass on sketchy ones.I usually nick arteries and hit both lungs by being patient.I never stopped using heavy arrows and will always take power over speed.Great content keep the faith

Good job brother! Keep the "scandalous" content coming! 😆😆 In Jan. 2021 in the MS rut, I had a 9 pt hot on a doe. He was 10 yd from me broadside with a bit of qtr to. I put the pin right BEHIND the shoulder when he was moving thru. He moved forward upon release of the arrow. THEY JUST WON'T HOLD STILL LIKE A TARGET WILL THEY!? 🤣🤣 The Magnus Black Hornet punched thru liver and clipped a bit of lung. I got arrow from the soil and crept out til the next morning. About 14 hours after the shot. My dog and I finished him off a few hundred yards with buckshot. Moral of the story. Tuck it tight, super tight in that shoulder because things happen in the deer woods. If I hadn't snuck out...if I hadn't waited til the following morning...if I didn't have a great tracking Lab and a good buddy help....that deer would've most likely went to waste.

It's anatomically correct shot placement. It's also a failure of your equipment if you can't get there. If this was a gun channel there would be no debate at all. Lots of folks have in their head 1950's rifle images of where to shoot, which were wrong then and wrong now.

I don’t know who can argue with this man there’s a reason all them bones are there protecting the vital organs
I find that a lot of these diagrams show the vitals in the place where the author of the diagram wants everyone to aim, not their actual size and location. For example, the lungs are way bigger and go way farther back than most diagrams portray. Well, the lungs also go all the way *forward* to the sternum, but the diagrams always show that the vitals are only to the rear of the humerus and scapula.
You really need to really look into a real deer and find the diaphragm. NO, they aren't WAY BIGGER.
@@RanchFairy The diagrams show the lungs as being the exact same size as the deflated lungs of a dead deer. If you are using the deflated lungs of a dead deer as a reference, then yes, the diagrams are pretty accurate. For my taste, I like to shoot deer when they are alive. Maybe that's just a personal preference. How about you?

Last year i upgraded my arrows to 525 grain and im also shooting single bevel broadheads. Last week I shot a deer quartering to me in the vital v and it hit her humerus, completely breaking it and still passing thru behind her rib cage. She went 25 yards. I will only shoot sb broadheads from now on thank you for the advice!

I am a big fan of the Ashby type of arrow, and I hate to admit it but I don't always hit exactly where I am aiming. My arrows are about 687 grains, total weight. I am only shooting a 45# Black Widow recurve. My current broadhead of choice is the long Grizzly 3 to 1, single bevel and my FOC is probably about 26 or higher. Saturday, opening day, I shot a nice doe from a tree at only 8 yards or so, but I still messed up and hit at what I would call slightly in front of the Vital V, or at least at the extreme front of the V on a pretty much broadside shot. I could tell by the sound that I had hit a lot of bone, and also did not get much penetration, because I hit so much bone.
I did not get an exit. Frankly, I had my doubts about finding this one, and it did go probably 200 yards, with not a lot of blood to trail. But I recovered it, and I am convinced, that a lesser arrow or broadhead, not designed for max penetration, and I would not have bagged this deer. The broadhead did more damage than I expected considering I didn't get a lot of penetration but a lesser arrow or broadhead would have failed in this example. On a light recurve, I need all of the edge I can get and the Ashby type arrow, gives me that.
Don't know how you feel about hunting videos games but the way of the hunter has helped me explain shot placement and animal anatomy to younger/less experienced hunters. It has great post shot examination with bullet/arrow path through the vitals with decent physics with bone interaction.
Killed my biggest deer to date with a bow on 9/15. He came in hard quartering to at 15 yards and stopped. I was at full draw but he wouldn’t move. I’m 20 feet up and with confidence put the pin on his scapula and let fly. Single bevel and 575 grains passed through and he ran 50 yards and tipped over. I should have taken a pic of the scapula and sent it to Troy. 5 years ago I wouldn’t have taken that shot. Now I don’t care what the angle is…I’m letting it fly. Thanks RF…keep it up!
RF I SERIOUSLY think you need to put a disclaimer right up front in every video about these being a plan B arrow. As you stated a less efficient/lighter arrow can and will kill but “what if”. Murphy is a SOB and likes to ruin your day…. I killed 2 deer with a .22 hornet as a kid. Knowing better now, I use a real bullet lol. Same goes for arrows, I’d rather OVER KILL the deer, the rock behind it and the dirt vs just barely getting by. As always keep up the good work and let the haters hate.
Now running a 588 gr arrow, 100 grain insert and a 175 single bevel from Grizzlystik. Arrows fly perfect and are hard to keep in a target. Can't wait to put one in a Whitetail shoulder lol.

Now don’t get me wrong…every year I practice with all my bows including my X-bow.
I love to shoot the factory 400 gr. Arrows!! But that is for the squirrels,rabbits and pheasants.
For big game that “yes “
Includes deer,I would never use any setup less than 500gr. Total weight.
The right mechanicals will definitely do the job. But a “sharp” fixed blade… don’t care how many blades or bevels”,will definitely make a hit much easier for you! Not going to go into detail on that. But if you’re curious and want to be a more humane hunter,send replies and reasons to the Ranch Fairy.

While trying to learn how to “really” sharpen B-heads and I destroyed 3 Magnus k-bees. Instead of bitching about it I ground them down
“With sandpaper” to a SINGLE BEVEL! Wow soooo much easier to sharpen! I mean REALLY sharpen!! Today I’m going to setup multiple cardboard targets to see the rotation of the arrow.
Launched from a Ravin R26 @ 380fps 460gr dart with 16% f o c.

The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!
Preaching to the choir here... Out to about 20 yards or so, aiming at the VITAL V works, but my experience, the further out the deer is, the more likely they are going to drop, AND roll away. Several sour encounters put my arrows HIGH from the drop, and FORWARD from the roll away, to the point where some arrows impacted IN FRONT of the TOP of the shoulder. If you choose to follow the "1/4 of a second rule", this is less likely to happen. 1/4 of your arrow speed determines your "maximum effective range" for hitting an animal BEFORE it can SIGNIFICANTLY move, AND significantly change the point of arrow impact. Having an arrow system that can survive impact, regardless of WHERE the impact is, is also... VITAL.
Aiming at the vital V always works..you miss that's incompetence.
I wouldnt dream of shooting 1/4 of my bows speed in meters - thats pretty far for most.
Divide your feet per second arrow velocity by 12 and that will give the effective yardage. Example - 140 fps divided by 12 is just over 11 yards or 10 meters. Very acceptable range for traditional equipment. @@african7498

That picture at 03:08 makes me think of that hunting sim available on the app store. Really good 3dof ballistics model and does simulate vital organs on deer etc. It's .22LR stats are a bit weird as the bullet magically speeds up in flight but I blame that on transonics in game. Not that I simulate .22LR for deer anyway. All good rifle rounds work a treat on it. It's very similar although the vital are all red with no blue. The Kristian Stensones one.

Jesus FINALLY! I keep telling people the same damn thing over and over and they just keep shooting way back on the animal and tracking (and loosing) deer. I also keep telling people that they need to aim for the exit and they just dont get it.

Hey Troy have you ever used or looked into the CTI(carbon inner tube) by Firenock? Basically a smaller diameter 6” piece of carbon that fits perfectly into the front of the shaft and holds the insert in. It’s supposed to decrease the range of oscillation in the arrow, stiffen the spine, and make the arrow more efficient. It also adds some weight up front so it seems like it’s right up your alley.
Killed my last 3 bucks in the vital V. Impacted the far leg all 3 times. Aim small miss small!

Just put one in the v yesterday (no not that v) 25 yards, 3 blade fixed on a 545 gr arrow moving 230 fps and it went all the way through and he went about 50 yards and dropped.

He disagreed with my comment saying he should explore your videos by saying you don't know what you're talking about and sealed the deal with the laughing emoji on my comment. I agree 100% with your shot placement abs I try to hit the vital v every time but I do it with a 500 grain set up and a mechanical head with very high success and bones don't stop my arrow when I do hit them on occasion

I own a company. I get asked questions from clients, employees, and even my wife dozens of times a day. I'm here to tell you, a good 50% (conservatively) of these questions are stupid questions.

Whenever someone refers to a bit of knowledge as "common sense", they usually mean that be something that they think everyone should accept without question.
@scottallen6305 I think you're confused with propaganda... in the traditional setting, "common sense" refers to things everyone should know to do or not do.
I.e. don't cross the street in front of a vehicle doing 50mph expecting them to lock up their brakes to come to a complete stop.

Good Day Sir - I would like you to see what was accomplished on October 15th, 2023 just 2 days after my Grandson had his bow built at Sunrise Archery in Fenton Michigan. This is the Bear Adapt Bow promoted by THP that I purchased for him. We built his arrows at 450 grains with a Steel Force broadhead at 100 grains. I would like your feedback on a 14 year old kid (Pictured) who watches your videos consistently learning something from you each and every time, and him taking this frontal shot on this decent Michigan Buck. Hmmm, Troy's preaching poor shot placement.... That's funny, I've shot a heavier arrow system for years, and I switched back to fixed blades about 5 years ago after seeing too many weird things with expandables. After switching back to a fixed blade, I moved my aiming point forward about 3-4 inches because I know I can blast through a scapula, spine, or leg bone with my setup (I still avoid the knuckle though). I've killed at least 8 deer the last 5 years and have watched every one of them go down. A sharpened and stropped Magnus Black Hornet on the end of a 480gr arrow with about 18% FOC will blow through any whitetail in my parts so efficiently that they don't run. They literally bound 1-3 times, then trot off 20-30 yards, stop for a few seconds, and collapse.
Hell, I had one bound 1 time, then come back to investigate the arrow sticking out of the ground. 6-8 seconds on their feet trotting away sure beats 10-15 seconds of a death sprint any day in my book😂
Ask those people saying your shot placement is bad, where they shoot with a 30-06? They’ll likely say they shoot through the front shoulder cause it’s a gun so no worries about bone. I think they are so ignorant that they don’t realize the reason it works so well is exactly what you are saying here. With a better arrow set up the same is true with a bow!
Since ive been shooting in the vital "V" , ive recovered alot more animals. Its common sense. ive showed alot of people this very thing.
Troy, I still think the pulmonary trunks are under-represented in both of those diagrams. Pulmonary arteries, pulmonary veins, heart, and aorta. That's what i'm really aiming for.

I shoot 60 lbs(bad rotator cuff), a 540 grain arrow and it crono'd 237 fps (and im using a "flipper flapper" 🤣) Would i be better off going for a double lung or in the V? Im so mixed on where to place a shot.
Broken humerus hole in far side ribs. But no blood trail. Ha ha. Went 50 yards!
I switched two blade Magnus stingers 150 grain on gold tip nitro 500, bolt weights 594 grains. 220 lb draws within 20 yards I busted through both shoulders on two deer with no problem both deer didn't go 50 yards

Vital v = meat in the freezer or head on the wall. I've experienced this way back in my hunting trips before I even knew what the vital v was. Now that I look back on that hunt and visualize where I put that arrow it all makes sense. That deer only ran 40 yds head first into a trunk of a tree because it was already dead within the first 20 yds. How can you beat that?
Great info, as always, Troy. Are you familiar with Ryan Gill /HuntPrimitive? He's been doing similar studies but with stone points on both arrows and atlatl darts. He's written two books on the subject and has lots of videos analyzing shot placement, broadhead to arrow shaft transition, and arrow lethality.
You were just harping on folks not to long ago using the term “pop” the lungs (we know they don’t physically pop, its an expression) and then you used it at 11:44 in the video, cmon now which is it? Hitting the animal in the most vital part is absolutely key and thank you for clarifying a little more but the most common chatter from folks that have spoken with you when they go into the archery shops is “build a 550-600gr arrow, follow the process, then take the shot lower 1/3 regardless any angle presented at any distance, shouldn’t have to let down anymore due to uncertainty if the setup will work”…… Animals are inconsistent, yeah that shot may work on one then fail on 3 and vice versa, etc.
Taking high probability shots, having the discipline to wait / pass on shots you are uncertain of is being a smart hunter (not an impatient lazy one who has to take the shot on every opportunity presented, that mentality leads to more BAD shots). More n more folks want an easy button as they have had a bad experience or two and blame the equipment vs themselves for taking a bad shot. “The animal reacted” they usually always do and even with the most stout setup it could still fail (usually a deflection).
There is a balance out there!!! Extreme in either direction is not a good thing either.
I love my twizzlers and 3” mechs with serrated slightly rusty “bleeder blades”. Tetanus is 100% fatal, and I’m very patient.

Hey Troy, I just re-watched the long range arrow flight vids and got an idea. Have you and Rocket Man ever thought of or tried to figure out how to map out the actual trajectory for all the different weights out to 60? I'd love to se that comparison! No clue how you would do that though lol!
Here's a fun fact. Broadheads are less aerodynamic and different broadheads CREATE different trajectory curves!!!
Sooo, you could do it with field points but that goes out the window as soon as you put on a broad head on. Ok, so do it with a broad head but it would only apply to that specific broad head and that goes in the trash when any of the other hundreds of broad heads is used...sweet🤦🏻♂️🔫
Hey Troy, one of my first you tube mentors on youtube. Here is my story its not pretty. I started with a 500 grain arrow. i shoot 70lbs and 26.5" draw. My bow is tuned. I now shoot a 385 grain arrow.(271 fps). I have the serv 1.5 and a magnus 2 blade in my quiver. Hunting in arizona the average shot is 62 yards. I have only harvested 1 animal. a 340 bull elk. so it was a uphill spot an stalk. My glasses were foggy. My first arrow was a sevr, he was walking so it hit him in the guts. did not go through. he ran and stopped. The mechanical pivots and locks. In Pain he stopped. I sent another serv through both lungs, but it did not penetrate the other side of the hide. He went about 20 yards and laid down. His head was still up. So sent a two magnus broadheads right through him. Shooting at a shoulder on an elk is probably not a good idea. I have heard of bullets being stuck in the shoulder from my guide. Anyways moving forward I will shoot a fixed blade on an elk and anything within 40 yards if there is no wind. I am hoping to get my first deer. I am going to try the EXact archery broadheads. I will be shooting from a saddle in high country.
Dont argue with fools. You cannot argue anatomy facts - like where the heart and arteries are placed. You never raised the question of ethics - deliberately taking a shot that will take hours to kill the animal is unethical - bad enough when it happens by accident. Intentionally - thats just giving bow hunting a bad name. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
RF, I’m using the Ranch Fairy 3 blade broad head, should i steer clear of a forward shot quarrying to? Or do you think it will handle bone should it encounter it? Keep these vids coming! Been vegging on these all year!
I would guess it depends on the quartering to angle, the yardage, the specific game, and your TAW. And obviously, can you wait and get a broadside/quartering away shot? With a 600 grain arrow at 70lbs and 30” draw: A whitetail doe at 10 yards slightly quartering to? Let it fly. A hard quartering to mature bull elk at 60? Too many variables that can go wrong for me.
