Very well done explanation and delivery‼️ I'm looking for a gen2 mini setup that will include a turbo upgrade requiring an external wastegate setup. Thanks to you, I completely understand my options.
Great explanation video with all things that matter covered. Knew most of this but still watched the whole thing. Haven’t seen it explained this well for some time. Running a 6a12tt in a e84a Mitsubishi galant and let’s just say the space advantage of internal wast gates is definitely being made use of in this engine bay. I’m only running Td025Ls twins but there is literally no space at the back between firewall and engine. Have given yah a sub!
My personal opinion if your a Subaru guy with a vf48 the best bang for your buck is not to add a external wastegate to your stock turbo, its so overkill, comp turbos makes a great stage 1 bolt on turbo with a turbosmart internal wastegate, i run it on my 20 sti making 400whp on pump and I have no issues with boost creep because it has a fat internal wastegate to combat those issues, plus the added bonus of a dual ball bearing turbo with a billet compressor wheel and cartridge, cartridge also has a built in oil restrictor for the ball bearing setup.
I absolutely agree with what you said, going EWG on a VF48 is definitely overkill but in my case, I found that the wastegate port was cracked and figured might aswell go with an EWG for the time being, since I had plans to go for a big turbo anyways later on. If you don't mind me asking, which Comp turbo did you specifically go with, and what other supporting mods do you have? I eventually plan on going for around 400whp on pump too.
Why would you modify the turbo to fit an external wastegate? The turbo with an internal wastegate is already designed to boost low enough numbers for the wastegate to keep up.
it could be because the internal wastegate port is cracked, or because they're trying to max out the performance of the stock turbo. You definitely gain a bit of power throughout the rpm range and gain a ton more boost control with an ewg.
Thanks for the great vid. I'm new to the turbo game but I have a garrett g25 550 on the way for a yb cosworth turbo. I ordered external wastegate as I was recommended by the dealer but I wasn't really sure of the pro's and con's. Thank again.
Awesome video, I have a 2015 STi, do you know if I can go EWG with the stock turbo? It’s a VF48, my wastegate isn’t opening and I’m stuck on 7 psi lately.
Hi, would you reccomend an external wastegate on a 2018 wrx sti, also why do people compare wastegates with catted vs cattless downpipes? whats the relation?
Amazing video! I have a question though My setup has a 70mm exhaust and external wastegate. If I were to have a smaller exhaust to reduce noise would it affect power negatively? My idea is to have a quiet exhaust and only make noise when external kicks in I hope this makes sense
Thank you! Personally what I'd probably do is to install a high performance muffler instead of making your exhaust smaller. This is exactly what I did on my STi. I went from a quad tip straight pipe to a single exit muffler and it actually gained a bit in the midrange while reducing in-cabin droning. Of course this might differ depending on your setup, what car is this on by the way?
How do you get around the ECU when going from internal to external wastegate, on cars that have electronically controlled wastegates? ECU isn't going to know you've modified the car mechanically.
Biggest difference is, external wastegate gave you that ...bwaahhhhh awesome sound...😁😁....
exactly :))
I kinda hate the choppy part of the sound. If I go ewg again, I'll prolly have the dump fabbed into the main exhaust

haha thank you so much man, I really appreciate it! Just gotta keep pumping these videos out consistently I guess 😅
probably one of the best comparison videos you could watch, definitely going external after watching this
thank you so much! spent quite a while going back and forth with my tuner to make sure I didn't get anything wrong 😅
Finally a video I can understand which explains everything well with diagrams, thank you for making this!!
no problem! glad you found it helpful!
Great video my man! Very informative and was a great explanation regarding the pros and cons, keep up the amazing work!
Thank you for the sub and feedback! Glad you found it useful!
Suuuuuuuper helpful, trying to learn more as I plan on adding a turbo to my vehicle. Thanks a lot!

Fire video brother I learned so much🎉
Glad I could help
thanx man this explained alot in a short time
Good video ,do you recommend this on my 2012 cls 550 twin turbo Mercedes-Benz?
hmmm, I would personally recommend doing a reflash/tune first. I haven't really seen a lot of people running an EWG setup on a Mercedes though.

yup absolutely, I'm running an EWG on a stock VF48 too. Helped with the power band up top and almost completely eliminated boost spikes
@@JCMediaYT can you do it without needing a tune, I know a tune would help make more power but would it be detrimental to the engine without a tune?
@@Grim-STi yes, since it changes how the boost is controlled, it may behave differently so I think a tune is required
just subcribed to your channel man, very informative and well done videos keep up the good work.
Thank you! Glad you found it useful, really appreciate the feedback :)

really good explanation. 👍
Thanks!
Awesome knowledge 👍tq bro

Tune out the electronic control
Which way does the valve move in the external waste gate? Does it move inside the wastegate or inside the exhaust
it moves into the wastegate
Great video thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Good info, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
great video, thank you
Glad you liked it!
@7:37, is that a 13b setup?
Zac baldy could learn a lot from this video
I have a 1.6 Mazda. My tuner told me that my 44mm Tial external wastegate is way too big for my TD04 turbo. What will I do?
while it should technically still be usable, I'd say a 38mm or a 40mm is more suitable for your turbo size
Awesome video
thank you!
Good stuff
Appreciate it!
Good info
Glad it was helpful!
External is the way
100% !
Hks bov on the chargepipe of the fmic = ❤
Can you sponsor me that tail wastegate
