  • Hopefully TH-cam's weird algorithm won't prevent this from being put into recommendations. In this video, I'll be explaining how Blow off valves and Bypass valves work. This one took quite a while to make since it's my first attempt at making some sort of animation. Anyways, hope you guys enjoyed this video and found it helpful!

    Honestly, at lower boost you can completely bypass it, if your driving rather hard most of the time... you'll be fine with neither... and you'll get that short "flutter " between shifts if you clutch long enough. For daily driving, yes you'll want one or the other...but if your mostly tracking your car and you are below about 25 psi boost (note* turbo dependent) your fine not running either.

    I don't understand one thing, there is nothing preventing high pressure air escaping out the air filter in a bypass valve system. How is that then any different from directly venting air to the atmosphere?

    I got a question, When using a blow off valve, I know a lot of cars have a Mass Air Flow sensor, which senses the amount of air going into the engine. If using a blowoff valve, the air that is shot into the atmosphere is accounted for. Therefore the Mass Air Flow sensor will tell the ECU which tells the fuel injectors to push more fuel causing the engine to run rich/lean. Is there anyway around this?

    • @JCMediaYT
      @JCMediaYT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      normally, you'd have to get a retune but so far, mine didn't have any issues with getting too rich/lean, having an Afr gauge is very useful

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had this exact question about a centrifugal supercharger kit (similar situation to turbos), and just found the answer to my question. It depends on the location of the MAF sensor. Some kits will relocate the MAF to be between the intercooler and throttle body, so as long as the BOV is before the MAF, it'll never know the difference. The MAF will only see the air which made it past the BOV and is about to pass the throttle. The kit I was looking at is like this. If your MAF is located before the compressor, then you're going to deal with the rich condition on blow-off as you described.

  • @alexsakon
    @alexsakon ปีที่แล้ว

    You didn’t mention the main disadvantage of the blow off valve and why you don’t find them on production cars - you have mismatch of actual intake air and what’s measure by air sensor since you’re venting it off

    How about the Plumb Back BOV? Is that a combination off BOV and BPV?

    • @JCMediaYT
      @JCMediaYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      a plumb back pov would kind of count more as a bypass valve because it's being plumbed back into somewhere else, bypassing certain components. At least that's what I think though

  • @NitroNuggetTV
    @NitroNuggetTV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There is no difference in turbo lag between both valve types, bypass valves don't recirculate any appreciable pressure back into the intake.

    Question. Can a "bypass valve" work as a "blow off valve" ? If you just remove the pipe that runs back to the intake manifold (or the place the extra air goes to and obviously block that part up) ?
    I will be running a carburettor, so I don't think that will affect air flow readings etc...
    The reason I'm asking, is because i already have a bypass valve ( I bought a supercharger from a toyota which had the sc12 supercharger on it and the bypass valve is the one that came with it)
    So my final question is; should I go by a blow off valve? Or should I just use the bypass valve as a bypass valve and be happy? Or can I use the bypass valve as a blow off valve?

    • @JCMediaYT
      @JCMediaYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      theoretically yeah, since they are basically the same thing (a valve actuated by vacuum lines)

    • @JCMediaYT
      @JCMediaYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      usually cars come with a bypass valve made of plastic which can't handle increase boost levels, hence why some people may change to a bov (also for the sound). However, a higher quality BPV works just as well so it's mostly down to preference on which sound character you prefer

    So from wat I can tell bov only vents fresh air, so then why is it against the law to have one in my state ?

    • @JCMediaYT
      @JCMediaYT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe it has something to do with emissions. I'll try explain it as simple as possible. When the air gets sucked into an intake, it passes through a MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) that basically reads how much air is going into the engine. The ECU reads this and injects the appropriate amount of fuel. When you use a vent to atmosphere BOV, the air is escaping the intake system and going into the air, but the ECU still thinks that there is air going into the engine. This creates a "rich" condition where to much fuel is being injected since the air was vented.
