2019 Honda Insight Test Drive Review: The Days Of Ugly Hybrids Are Over

  • The first and second generation Honda Insight were both highly forgettable hybrids, which did little to draw consideration over the equally ugly Toyota Prius. Now, Honda is back with the third generation Insight, and wow, what a change it has undergone.
The Insight is now based on the same platform as the 10th generation Civic, meaning it actually looks pretty. In fact, we had plenty of people tell us they thought this is Honda's best-looking sedan.
Under the hood, a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine combines with an electric motor for a total output of 151 horsepower and 197 lb-ft of torque, which are class-leading. Handling is also pretty good, as the Insight borrows heavily from the fun-to-drive Civic.
Pricing is also very affordable, with the base LX trim starting at just $22,830. Even the top Touring trim manages to pack a ton of features for just $28,090.
We don't know why it has taken an automaker so long to build a hybrid car that looks and drives this well, but we are ecstatic now that it has finally happened.

I've seen a few of these on the road already and the Insight is indeed a good looking car. It definitely looks better than the weirdly shaped Honda Clarity.

I have owned my 19 lx insight for a month now and it’s been the best car I’ve ever owned. Coming from a 2014 accord v6 coupe, the better gas mileage and the INSTANT torque makes this car drive so much better.

christopher72425 Not really, you definitely hear the motor kick on on the highway but only when it needs extra power.

christopher72425 No problem! You should go to a Honda dealer and test drive one! I was on the fence as well but after a test drive I was sold on it.

I ❤️ that it looks normal. Why can't other manufacturs make normal looking hybrids. Only this and the Kia Niro look nice. And the Ford C-Max. But the mileage on that is depressing.

I just got one Corolla Hybrid 1.8l last week . 5 persons 4l /100 km in highway , 3.7 l/100km in city . It is better than its spec. Also it is very quiet.

P.S.: Actually, the batteries should stay in the trunk ... in a box covered with a good lead layer. :/ www.saferemr.com/2014/07/shouldnt-hybrid-and-electric-cars-be-re.html?fbclid=IwAR0jJa407xxdv8-uNNP_OUXO_gh4h_2q2nxjbLSZ3NB88KLJdFkHkUIIIvk

My guess is, when the engineers were handing over their blue print for the new redesigned civic and the new insight, they dropped the sheets and gave the insight design to the civic department and civic to the insight... how else would you explain the space-ship rear end of the new civic which would've been perfect for the insight hybrid where as this insight design is what the new civic should've been front and back!

The engine droning is probably a result of this car not having a typical transmission, or technically a single speed transmission. It simply peaks engine (generator) output to the electric drive motors and stays at that same rpm the whole time. Something I have read takes some getting used to. I have been car shopping for over a year and this car might actually make me sell my old Nissan Sentra that has been bulletproof for 13 years and well over 200K miles.

I do not know how long takes to fix it. The american honda said, they sent the part to dealer. I asked them to provided for tracking number and they said, they do not have it. what a big lier. terrible service. poor communication.
