    Our family just went through the same process in buying a hybrid. Our hybrid buying experience was very much the same in that we noted almost all of the same benefits/flaws you did (though I, personally, thought that the Prius was more "droney"). The things that swayed us:
    The main advantages of the Insight:
    1. The Insight has a more "luxurious" interior, with real leather, not "leatherette" (what appears to be a "high end" imitation leather on the Prius, so I don't know how durable it will be, long term) on the high end (we also thought that the cloth seats were very slightly nicer).
    2. The Insight is quieter.
    3. The Insight is quicker, especially in Sport mode.
    4. The Insight has Apple Carplay/Android Auto (as of the 2018 model year, the Prius doesn't support either, it is unclear whether the 2019 will have it). Though I have found the interface of Android Auto to be disappointing because you (apparently) can't set up frequently used app icons on the main page like you can with Apple Carplay. Ironic, since Android (arguably) has a more configurable interface than iOS in smart devices.
    5. The Insight has a more configurable rear backup camera (three different fields of view (ultra wide, wide, and "just below the bumper") and a blind spot camera for the right side (only, but it should be available for both the right and left sides) that displays whenever the turn signal is on or you press the button on the end of the turn signal stalk. (Note: the "con" of the blind spot camera is that you cannot see the navigation screen at all when making a right hand turn, which causes confusion when you are trying to make the correct right turn with a couple streets in close proximity to each other. I've made more than one wrong turn because of this. Not often a really big deal, unless, for example, one of those streets will take you in the wrong direction, such as a freeway on/off ramp.)
    The main advantages of the Prius:
    1. The gas milage on the Prius is about 2-3 MPG better with the standard models and +5-6MPG better with the Prius Two Eco.
    2. The Prius has noticeably more cargo space.
    3. We found the seating position a bit higher in the Prius, giving a better view of the road and a higher sit in/get out position, making it easier to get in and out.
    One feature I wish that both would adopt ASAP is the availability of a HUD.
    Oh, as you can probably guess, we bought the Insight, even though I used to own a 2009 Prius Touring with real leather seats (totaled because someone ran a red light). Yeah, I REALLY like leather seats!
    Also, both take a big hit in MPG when the temperature drops below ~50 degrees (about 10-15%, in our experience). This is because both use the engine for heating rather than electric, which forces the engine to run more often to keep the cabin warm. So the colder it is, the more the engine runs and the lower the MPG. There is a lesser hit on MPG over ~80 degrees because both use electricity to drive the AC.
    Thanks for the great review!

      @@electrictroy2010 Yeah, I know. It's pretty obvious when looking at it.
      FWIW, I think gonna should have called the current Insight the "Civic Hybrid" because it looks so much like a Civic. And then they should have called the "Clarity" the "Insight" because it has so many design cues from the original Insight even though it is a plug-in hybrid.
      My $.02...

    • @electrictroy2010
      @electrictroy2010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Clarity is a hydrogen based vehicle (although it has hybrid variants). I think Honda wanted to keep it a separate hydrogen brand. Also Insight has always been a subcompact car, so using the label on a midsize clarity would be illogical.

    • @GlueFactoryBJJ
      @GlueFactoryBJJ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@electrictroy2010 The hydrogen version is only available in California. You can't buy one. You have to lease.
      The plug in hybrid version is available throughout the US. Which is why I mentioned it.
      The original Insight was a very experimental car. Very in line with what the "Clarity" is today. As you noted, the current Insight is essentially a Civic Hybrid in all but name.
      The above are the reasons why I made my last post. But Honda's reasons are their own and they surely don't listen to me. 😏😁

    I remember we rented a 2010 Prius from San Francisco and drove it back and forth to Las Vegas. As we were going uphill I found myself doing 88 mph and had to back off. There was no additional engine noise or increase in revolutions. No idea that we were accelerating except that we were passing everyone. Again, the 0 to 60 is what most people use to measure a car's power but the Prius we had was plenty powerful for going over the mountain passes. We averaged 46.5 mpg for the 2,100 miles we put on it that week.

    Toyota's hybrid is a solid and reliable platform. Stuff like this needs to be considered more TFL (potential longevity/reliability of a vehicle outside an initial review). Prius all the way, but I actually own the 2020 Corolla hybrid. It's cheaper than a Prius, looks great/athletic and same platform. I'm rated at 52MPG combined, but average around 60MPG city/highway; I'm not an aggressive driver always looking to pass people. Honda Insight, Honda, they are headed in the right direction, but what won me originally with owning one of the first automatics I've enjoyed (opposed to manual) is the planetary transmission in the Prius, always smooth, consistent and reliable. Toyota is dedicated to this platform and knows what they are doing... Honda, they are hit or miss (arguably less committed to hybrids) more than Toyota in terms of reliability in my opinion... they aren't as reliable as they once were (Toyota arguably as well, but we are discussing the hybrid platforms).

    • @roncarhome1974

    For me it would be the Insight hands down. The only reason I would even pause for a second is the Prius's reliability ratings, but I imagine the Honda is close in that department also. I would like to see a comparison between the Insight and the Corolla Hybrid. The only reason I am even considering a Hybrid now is I am not stuck with that horrendous looking Prius as my only option. My next purchase will either be an Insight, Corolla Hybrid, or possibly a non hybrid a Impreza.

    4:35 I think what you meant here is "it's not that quick. Fast is meant to decribe the speed, quick - the acceleration.
    "fast car = can move at high speeds" "quick car = high acceleration rate"
    It's important because regular drivers are not interested in a fast car due to speed limits on regular roads, rather in how quick the car can accelerate.
    You can say "it accelerates fast" or "it's quick"

    The lack of the hatchback on the Honda significantly reduces its practicality. I wonder why they did that considering there is a Civic hatchback and the previous Insight was a hatchback. I probably get a Hyundai ioniq hybrid over either of these cars. The Prius has no issue keeping up with traffic flooring it is not the best way to accelerate. 0 to 40 I out run traffic constantly, in my old high mileage 2008 Prius. The 40-65 is where it's slow. But it picks up again over 75 miles per hour. Passing power on the interstate is no problem at all.
    Just finished a 5200 Mile Road Trip, averaged 42 MPG, traveling over 75 miles per hour most of the time. Closer to 52 miles per gallon in slow City traffic. And my Prius has 237000 miles on it.

      Before anyone decides on purchase between these two vehicles you might do some research in regard to HV battery construction and battery reliability. We own a 2003 Prius with 226500 miles on the clock. Vehicle still running great. Also own a 2006 Honda Civic which is also a great vehicle. Civic will get 36-38 on highway. The Prius gets about 45-46 highway, but will get 40-43 in town, Civic won't touch that. Remember though, this is the first model Prius. Newer models do much better. Guess we will all see how the new Insight will fair out. My $$$ is on the Prius.
