    Based largely on the Civic, the all-new 2019 Honda Insight employs a regular hybrid powertrain to improve fuel economy. Priced roughly, $2,000 over comparable Civics, the Insight also includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plenty of cargo space, and an array of safety features as standard equipment. But, of course, the car’s mileage is its true selling point.
    A 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine pairs with a hybrid motor to produce a combined 151 horsepower-with 197 lb-ft of torque available from 0 to 3,000 rpm thanks to that electric motor. Honda claims this powertrain, paired with a CVT and driving the front wheels, will help the Insight deliver 52 mpg in combined driving, in LX and EX trims. Due to its larger wheels and heavier equipment (such as premium stereo), the Touring trim is supposed to return 48 mpg combined.
    But Chris Wardlaw didn’t see 48 mpg when he tested an Insight Touring. Instead, he saw a meager 38.9 miles per gallon. But does this make the Insight, with its good looks, engaging drive, and impressive set of standard features a bad deal? To find out, read Chris’ full review on CarGurus: cargur.us/qkrr2

    I've owned a new Insight for about 2 months. I have the touring model and love it. I have averaged around 53 mpg. I've had two trips where I got over 60 mpg. I don't understand how you could only get mileage in the 30's.

      Is the engine as noisy as he lets on to be? I've noticed that in several reviews they say that the engine gets quite noisy over 60 mph. That seems to be the only major negative from reviewers.

    • @OON7
      @OON7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chadwickwood9843 I calculated two of my first tanks and the trip computer was .8 too low on one and about 1 too low the other.
      My biggest annoyance is the car underreports the remaining range. It usually is trying to tell me less than 50 miles remaining, then I go fill up and can only get 8.5-9 gallons in a 10.6 gallon tank. I've been filling up at around 500 miles a tank but certainly seems I could push to 600+ if I ignore the low fuel and range.

  • @HSQadri

    Ive owned this car for nearly two months now. EX trimming. Bit flabbergasted by the pronouncement that you only got 35mgp; I average combined 51-55mpg myself - driving in Atlanta and all its freeways.
    Maybe drive it for more than a single hour, the next time you do a review?
    Never used EV mode at all. On adaptive cruise control, going 75 on hwy, with eco-con mode on (which is only useful in freeways in my experience), I can get 49-52mpg average. Driven manually, I can get slightly more while appropriately down-shifting for increased regenerative breaking, but I prefer to use the ACC at every opportunity; driving is nearly automated for the most part.
    For the design, comfort, cabin-noise, and overall driving experience, on top of the overall fuel economy, it's easily the best (non-plugin) hybrid in class. And I’ve had a chance to drive most of them (Prius, Ion, etc). Plus, it looks better than both the accord and the civic.

    • @OON7

      I'm in Columbus Ohio, and it's very easy to beat the EPA estimates here. On my current tank I've been using sport mode quite a bit and I'm still at 48.7, which is the worst mpg I've gotten with this car.
      Also, I have to laugh at the engine and road noise complaints. Turn on the stereo to at least emulate normal driving, and you'll notice the engine or road noise no different than most cars. It actually sounds 'worse' because the car can be extremely quiet for large portions of your drive when the gas engine isn't doing much work. When it kicks in it seems loud because it was so quiet before.

    • @mqbitsko25
      @mqbitsko25 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Spot on. I've got well under 40 mpg on a short drive, but it was all uphill. This is the real world, not the Jetsons. But you can't climb forever. Eventually you go back down. This guy didn't even use a single tank of fuel. His "test" was meaningless.
      Noisy engine when it's working hard? Yes. It certainly is. Obnoxious, even. But well worth it. I use it for Uber and Lyft, and compared to my VW TDI diesel (no slouch in the fuel economy department) it's saving me $100 a month just in FUEL. I'll turn up the radio for that.

    I've had my insight touring for 3.5 weeks now and am 180 miles into my second tank of gas averaging 53 mpg, about half of those on the highway.
    The first tank I averaged 46 mpg with the same driving scenario.
    The only thing I've done different with the second tank is use the adaptive cruise as much as possible, even to complete stops. The feature is amazing. I literally use it from light to light on City traffic.
    If a accelerate manually as softly as possible in this car, the gas engine kicks in before I can hit 10-15 mph, however letting the car accelerate on its own from a stop using acc I consistently get up to 30-35 mph. before the engine cuts on.
    While I wish I could accelerate manually and get those results it's an easy trade off for the fuel efficiency. This thing brakes way smoother than I do lol. DEFINITELY NOT autonomous in any way but it does kinda feel like it drives itself over 45 MPH 😁.
    I've had several 20+ mile trips where I averaged 68+ mpg!

      I live in south florida, so everything is flat around here. With my insight touring I get around 57.8 average MPG with around 537 miles of range. I already have 4,219 miles on it. Takes about 10 gallons to fill out or about 21-25 bucks to fill up. I don't use the adaptive cruise if there's a hill coming up in 595, sawgrass express way, i75 or i95 because it will basically rev up when it doesn't really have to. I also use lots of regen breaking. But ACC is great when dealing with Miami traffic or driving down the turnpike, and all the other features the touring offers are worth it in my opinion

    Looking around the forums and the reviews, I'm steadily getting the sense that everyone in a truly mountainous area -- which seems to include almost every West Coast-based review -- is striking out on mileage, while people in the flat are just about making the EPA numbers, while people in gently rolling territory (e.g. Consumer Reports with their eastern Connecticut-based testing, or, say, suburban DC or Atlanta) are nailing it. Hybrids have their strengths and weaknesses but this car seems to emphasize them more than most.

    I sold a 2010 Transit Connect van and bought a 2019 Insight. The van, a tiny little thing made in Turkey and lacking all but the most basic creature comforts, had a sticker price almost the same as the Insight.
    They tell us cars are getting more expensive. I beg to differ. I can't believe what this car packs into a sub-30K price.
    REAL fuel economy? I can't get less than about 45 to 50 even on the high speed open highway, which is not this car's natural element. I use it to drive Uber and Lyft, and it's returning more than 52 mpg routinely. It's a Touring model, which the EPA says will return 51 City, so I'm beating that handily.
    How did you manage to get fuel economy that bad? Towing a TANK? Real Insight drivers leave it in Econ mode, and they don't race it around. If you do then you're an idiot.

    Other manufacturers have convinced too many people that you need to drive a hybrid differently to get the rated mileage. You can tell when they have succeeded, when the driver says he used EV mode to try to get it.
    EV mode is a tool that should be used by the onboard computer, not the driver, to allow power to be used at a different time than when it is generated. At highway speeds, the ICE is most efficient when generating about 50% more power than is needed. The Insight's computer will do this if it can, and later use EV mode to achieve at net savings over the two phases. But it can't do the second part if the battery charge is too low. The reviewer's poor mileage was probably caused by his attempts to improve it with EV mode.
    The exception is in hilly areas, if the charge gets too high and the car can't store regen energy. Which is more likely if the driver uses Sport mode, which maintains a higher level of charge. So again, the reviewer caused the poor mileage.
    I drive in hilly areas in my Accord Hybrid (similar hybrid system), and routinely exceed its rated mileage.

    "Electronic continuously variable transmission."
    Nope. It has NO transmission at all. In limited situations, mostly when highway cruising with a light load, the computer can engage a simple single-speed direct drive connection to the wheels. But no "transmission", CVT or otherwise. The engine turns a generator, which feeds either the wheels or the battery, or sometimes both.

    • @sigmaprojects
      @sigmaprojects 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't blame him, that's what Honda calls it. They have it labeled as "eCVT." Technically it still is a transmission, it's just less so than we are accustomed to.

    • @cmac1100
      @cmac1100 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sigmaprojects in my opinion, they need to simplify the definition of "transmission". Its such a broad term that yes, TECHNICALLY it has a "transmission" under the current, broad, definition, but most people would understand the vehicle system better if Honda just said that it doesn't have a transmission.

    • @sigmaprojects
      @sigmaprojects 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cmac1100 agreed. Also if you drive the new Insight it does feel like it has a CVT even though it doesnt. I wonder if someone can map the throttle inputs so it doesn't feel so rubber band like. The electric motor has almost 200tq from 0~3000rpms it should feel like a rocket if a person wanted it to.

    • @sigmaprojects
      @sigmaprojects 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @John Doe there are two gears and a single clutch. When at freeways speeds a clutch engages a second gear with a taller ratio directly to the engine. So it's a two speed. Even if it was a single gear-reduction transmission that's still a transmission. A true direct drive has ZERO gears in between the engine/motor and the wheels. Yet nearly all vehicles, electric or not have at least a single gear reduction transmission.

    • @sigmaprojects
      @sigmaprojects 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @John Doe This shows how the new transmission works. You have one gear driven off the first electric motor with a gear reduction for lower speeds, at higher speeds the lock up clutch connects the ICE to a taller gear and disables power from the primary electric motor. This gives the car two sets of gear ratios, one for low speed that allows only the primary electric motor and a second gear ratio for when utilizing the ICE for propulsion th-cam.com/video/IeV9EHmxOM8/w-d-xo.html
      You can call the transmission whatever you like, but it's a box filled with gears that allow for different utilization of torque multiplying.

    Ive been looking a Accord Hybrids, and stumbled across the Insight on the lot... The salesman barely even mentioned it to me, so Ive come to TH-cam to find out what its about. Basically the Accord Hybrid is a 2.0 4 cylinder, and the Insight is the 1.5 4 cylinder, both have the same CVT transmission. The Insight is slightly small in exterior appearance... though is you squint, you might think its an Accord. The Insight is 100 times better looking than the Civic, and is about $2-3,000 cheaper than the Accord across the board in all trim levels.. LX, EX, and Touring. and about $2-3,000 more than the Civic across the board too. So, the Insight is hitting the sweet spot. Id like to drive a Hybrid, and save on gas, but I didnt want to look like a 'fan boy' 'soy-boy' driving a Prius.

      The question I have is how Honda got their numbers with the new EPA cycle, why they designed the car like this, and most of all why the are sending their least fuel-efficient trim to journalists. Toyota and Hyundai send their MOST fuel-efficient car to journalists, does Honda think bad MPG is going to impress people?
      This poor MPG is disappointing by itself, but not that surprising. Serial hybrids always have fallen short (Malibu for example) and the Insight has more sound deadening and heavier motors than competitors (the Ioniq or Prius). I just really want to know who is calling these shots at Honda.

    This is the worst review from Cargurus based on the amount of mistakes.
    Just a few things I noticed- as other people mentioned:
    - the car doesn’t have a gearbox- it’s an eCVT. This is different than Prius where you do get a CVT. The technology that Honda is using for it's hybrid power includes a clutch system - the generator is charging the battery and only in certain conditions (highway for example) is used to send power to the wheels. The engine noise is due to the amount of electricity needed for the electric motor not due to activation of the wheels. This is why many reviewers have picked on the loud noise and somewhat disconnected noise/speed ratio.
    - the mpg test and conclusion is wrong- it should read- do not buy this for the MPG if you drive in countryside with mountain routes as we know hybrids are not good at it. But as other people have mentioned- if you drive in the city or stop and go traffic- most of us- you may benefit from the results of this hybrid power train (not tested here).
    I will unsubscribe from the channel after this review as I am surprised that CarGurus is less tech- informative than many of the amateur car oriented youtubers I have seen around.

Worst mileage so far was 32 mpg the other day with 20 minutes worth of city driving then quickly shot up to 38 mpg. Spirited driving gets me 36-38 mpg. When you even mention a hybrid in the same sentence as autocross, (minus a supercar) you know you're dealing with the slanted opinion of a gearhead. The people who buy hybrids never even consider this. That is why your mileage figures are suspect. Because you thrash your test cars like all gearheads - and hybrids don't play that. Also, watching several other reviews on this identical model and trim reveal that other reviewers are getting significantly better mileage. No, I'm not a Honda fan boy. In fact, I've only ever owned an '82 Civic - years ago.
