Just wanted to remark on how thoughtful it was adding in the household objects as alternatives for all of us stuck in quarantine, it's really appreciated.
If you sit on your arse doing these leaning back, you'll be working more of your front delts .. but if you lean forward you'd be working the rear delts. While standing straight the side delts. 2 or 3 out of 3 of these ways you're going to end up hitting yourself and hurt.
Matt, you are not only Captain Context and the Master of Inuendo you are also the King of HEMA-solotraining! Your videos with solodrills for sabre was what got me started in HEMA some years ago. Now I have at last found a HEMA-club and been able to start training "for real" :). I have been having some issues with my bucklerarms shoulder getting fatigued quickly while I do sword and buckler and I think this exercise could help me with that :) Thanks for all you do!
Traditional Karate has something similar its known as 'chi ishi' basically a dumbbell with a weight only on one end. The exercises are very similar and its great for strengthening and conditioning.
In Australia, club swinging has become part of our physical culture in a peculiar way. The calisthenics movement of the 19th or early 20th century developed into a competetive sport, which in the 1950s became an exclusively girls' and young ladies' event. It combines dancing with physical fitness routines, and club swinging is a major element of the training. It is very much of the "fancy" variety, making use of very light clubs and placing a high emphasis on the artistry of the movements.
Thanks so much for sharing this routine, its a lot more fun than normal exercises! Hope you'll show us more sword fighting related workouts in the future, I've really enjoyed your older ones as well.
Great to see club swinging coming back. I started club swinging with a 1kg hammer as a warm-up exercise about a year ago because of chronic shoulder pain and both Golfer's and Tennis elbow. Since invested in 1.4kg clubs and find them really useful to warm up and cool down my elbows and shoulders before/after crossfit workouts, particularly those involving cleans and presses. Not a swordsman but am interested in military history and I am sure that cavalry/yeomanry regiments started club exercises (or imported them from India) to improve cns/muscle memory (not that it was called that then) for sabre drills.
This just reminds my of an old exercise VHS video my mom worked out to... can we get a Scholagladiatoria sword exercise video with Shadiversity and Skallagrim as Matt’s backup exercisers?
I have started on the clubs when first you showed them here - and naturally added work with swords. But this has given me some additional ideas. Thanks for this - and the one before.
Great video. My clubs are my primary exercise tool.now we're in lockdown. I've shared these exercised a lot with my dance students, so they have a lot of flexibility
This reminds me of The Iron Sheik. He would use 75 pounds persian clubs/ meels and challenge others to do as many reps with them as he would, during wwf shows. I don't know why I know these things...
You can also use a simple broom - gripping the tip of the handle causes leverage to make the head of the broom feel crazy heavy & crazy hard to manuever.
This is a terrific addition to your usual stuff about the hardware- many of us would like, and desperately need, more information on how to learn to use them without hurting ourselves especially now htat gatherings are frowned upon if not outright forbidden. Also a good way to find out just how *out of shape* we are...
And i would like to add , like every joint/ muscle exercise out there , it`s better if you work out both side , so repeat this exercise with both hands
In the US, cast iron pans are still common. I bet they would work pretty well, as far as pots are concerned. Heavy & good grip. I will be using my small 4# drilling hammer later today.
I do those kinds of exercices with a bokken. I often do the drills proposed in Lang's book on cane fighting but because the bokken is heavier and has an edge, I find they help a lot to strengthen the grip and, the forearms and the shoulders, besides wrist mobility, and they relate better to swordsmanship. You do need more space than with the saucepan though :-)
Save some money on expensive narrow-necked bowling pins. Here in the States, we have Harbor Frieght, cheap Chinese tools, but here cheap doesn't matter. They have Dead Blow hammers, which you can get in matched weight pairs at low cost. I'm doing Indian club routines with a 1.5 pound pair, less than $18 total. Other weights are 2, 3, and 4 pounders. The only disadvantage is they're florescent orange, so if you take them to the gym, you might get some sideways looks... Also HF does mail order!!!!!
Matt, what do you think about those reusable soda bottles that can be filled with 2.5 liters of water? Their "necks" have a proyection made so you can carry them without having them slip on your hand, so I guess that could make do
Mr. Easton you are living my dream, thank you for your beautiful videos and tons and tons of unselfish shared informations and knowledge you have gave us and I wish you all the best in your life
Thank you for this, my shoulders are tore up and I needed this. I just made a club from a tree branch, not sure how much it weighs, but it's heavy enough to help me stretch and do this technique better. I have a small baseball (tee ball) bat that's about 1 lbs that I used at first to get the hang of the motion, then switched up to the branch/club and my arms got a nice work out.
Really cool. I use a closet dowel, oak, about 1 3/4" diameter, 24" long. I duct taped five big, hefty bolts to the "far" end; overall weight is about 5-6lbs. Nice cheap alternate.
A champagne bottle would be a good substitute for a club. If you have a full magnum bottle at home (like me) you have a handy four pound exercising club. Thank you for sharing this enjoyable exercise with us and all the best from Germany, Maximilian.
That was very interesting. There is something wonderfully Victorian about Indians Clubs; like Vulcanized Horsehair. Once Matt got in to the swing of his exercise, I was waiting from some EDM to kick in. Having said that, I was really getting a feel for how effective a weapon that little club would be. I'm off now to watch some stick fighting videos.
Quick word of warning: Don't use your children as clubs! Whilst they may go quiet for a short time, they are not really enjoying it but merely in a state of shock paralysis.
I enjoy your show. I have always had a curiosity about swords and their use. Since I retired I've started making knives and swords as a hobby. So far my first and only sword is a Cutlass with a Bowl guard the blade is 23 inches. I'm not a Swordsman, and have no training, but the craftsmanship is intriguing it's art work. However it would also be nice to learn to use the weapons I make. So I thank you . You seem to be quite a authority on the subject and one can never learn too much.
They use similar clubs in Zurkhaneh which is a kind of ritual + exercise in Iran! Might be cool if you decided to do a video on the traditions and history associated with these exercises, especially if you have some good sources
Matt... I just ran over 20 km. Why did I think watching you do exercises would not make me feel tired? :P This could be good for my shoulder though, since it's held together with screws and plates and the gym's closed because of the current pandemic. Cheers Matt!
For the shoulder cap, one of the first things I learned was just holding it out, level. As long as you can before it starts shaking. Relax, shake it off, and then do it again... If you can't even hold the sword (I've seen power-lifters fail this) then everything based on your stance is out the window.
If you don't have a club, a tapered plastic bottle like a 1 ltr tonic or ginger ale bottle full of water is a good substitute. Almost exactly the same shape as the large club, and just over 2lbs in weight.
I have a steel mace (or gada mace) that I occasionally do swing variations with that seem to help my shoulders and have been pondering adding clubs, especially for during the winter when going outside to swing a 20 lbs mace isn't an option. Just did a brief test with an empty port wine bottle and definitely notice my left shoulder seem a bit stiffer than my right. May try it with my training sabre later, but still want to add clubs eventually.
Whenever I watch your videos time flies away. However I'd want you to make a video on which weapon would you prefer if you have to face any wild animal singlehandedly - wolf, hyena, Jaguar, cheetah, tiger, panther, lion, leopard, gorilla, orang otan, chimpanzee, bear, python, anaconda. Remember you are alone ( that animal is also alone) & no firearms or missiles like bow/arrow allowed. However you can have a spear though. So which weapon would you prefer- sword, Katana, dagger, spiked mace, axe, warhammer or anything else. You can have more than one weapon though. However you can't have more than one spear. Will you choose similar weapon against all the animals or different weapons for different creatures? Will your choice of weapon change whether you are fighting in a closed space or in an open area?
Having hurt an shoulder while snowboarding, the other shoulder while LARPing, and having tennis elbows in both arms after 15 years of swordsmanship and carpentry, this ought to be good for me xD
Hey... I like this.... Matt.. please do a video that shows more little... Work out moves, that can help with handling a sword... Please ... I really liked this
Matt, for a non club swinger, you did a pretty good job, and progressions. And if it's been helping your condition, even better. A thing about the lack of edge on the club, for proper position and protecting the shoulder joint, the knuckles represent the sharp edge. On the move you're doing, the outer heart shaped swing, the sharp edge should lead from the 3 to the 6 o'clock position, then turn the edge to return to 12 o'clock. And if you can think of launching/ extending the club towards 1 o'clock instead of 3, even better! Wow! With this lighting, it just occurred to me how much you look like Wallace from Wallace and Gromit, without the fat I guess. Its actually one of my favourite childhood shows.
These videos seem like their target audience would be knights stuck inside castles during plague quarantine.
So... the video is hitting its target audience. Good.
Gotta keep up that knightly physique!
@@shinobi-no-bueno Don't mind me, I'm just coughing on doorknobs & sneezing on switchboards.
So, Prince Prospero?
Just wanted to remark on how thoughtful it was adding in the household objects as alternatives for all of us stuck in quarantine, it's really appreciated.
Matt: Up, extend, swing through, and to vertical.
Me sitting on my arse: ...
Matt: Good!
Be careful not to clip yourself in a painful place.
If you sit on your arse doing these leaning back, you'll be working more of your front delts .. but if you lean forward you'd be working the rear delts. While standing straight the side delts. 2 or 3 out of 3 of these ways you're going to end up hitting yourself and hurt.
@@MarkVrem
2 or 3 out of 3? I'm sure I can do better and manage to hurt myself 4 out of 3!
What kind of deep fake is this?
Everyone knows the UK only has varying intensity of rain or dense fog.
Nature wants them to go out and spread the virus.
The deepest fake.
Green screen. Matt is upping his tech game.
Clearly these are the End of Days.
Clubbing with Matt
Now in DVD with British sunlight and chirping birds
Obviously a deep fake as everyone knows there is no such thing as sunshine in the UK, only varying intensity of rain and/or fog.
🤣😂
"British. Sunlight." You jest, sir?
It's so adorable when Matt says he's not an expert about something even though he's read all the manuals about it and practiced it for years
Matt, you are not only Captain Context and the Master of Inuendo you are also the King of HEMA-solotraining! Your videos with solodrills for sabre was what got me started in HEMA some years ago. When I first started fencing about 45 years ago we used Indian clubs. 😀
Hey, thank you for the mention & plug, Matt! :)
Several styles of indian pins are used to develop the shoulders.
In the UK, they like to use the sauce pin.
"first thing I would say right off the bat" a pun?
Looks like a saucepun.
It snowed over here, in Toronto, yesterday.
That's all I could think of seeing Matt in short sleeves, outside, in the sunshine.
With leaves in the trees! When do they come out?
Hail and rain here in Lower British Columbia (Washington State).
I'm envious of Matt's blatant unrepentant Spring weather too!
fuferito I hope the six is keeping healthy these days! Greetings from a carver in eastern Washington state USA 🇺🇸
In Terrace Bay they've still got about three feet of snow on the ground.

Indian clubs are great, banging bangra music, great dancing and Cobra larger on tap 👌
That's good, there's an Okinawan version of this called "chishi" that I've seen, but I never heard of Indian club before.

I used a beer bottle, and then I opened it - not the best idea I ever had.
Just don't fly away
If you do it right, you can clean the ceiling, the walls and the floor in one fluid movement. 😉
Nah really, i use a broom to strengthen my grip. Not for swords but for freerunning

Here's the chap who shows us how to do the club scene, while in quarantine.
I’m using the cold steel Brooklyn shorty bat... similar in size & shape of the small one you have.
The heavy club does work the body even when the body is static. The focus can actually be on core strength rather than arms.
