@@MishKoz I think the reason why Wario Land Shake it didn’t gain success was because 1. Captain Syrup didn’t have much of a role, since Nintendo focused too much on their joke character Waluigi, who had no personality at all; if she was Wario’s partner in crime in the Mario spin-offs, she would’ve deserved better than what we got today, like if she was viewed as a strong independent woman who is different from Peach and Daisy, but has to rely on Wario to help get the attention she needs, especially with their common interest in wealth (see “Why Captain Syrup is Greater than Waluigi” for more details). 2. They gave this game a completionist checklist that no one wanted to use. It slows down the pacing of the game, especially when the one part of the game is a speedrun from after saving the prisoner to returning back to the start! Because they never implemented the charge dash from WL4 naturally through a button, but did it artificially with a literal in-game machine, you will end up losing the charge dash the moment you just got it!

@@omnipasta As much as I love him, Pac-Man is another thing that comes to mind. If you only had Smash to go off of, you'd think Pac-Man has only ever been a short-lived arcade series (albeit with a legacy), when it's actually had numerous titles of different genres across console generations, most notably the Pac-Man World series. Poor Pac's got no quality music from the bulk of his games, no good alts, & half his moveset is more Namco than Pac-Man. It's like if Mario was tossing NES sprites & riding on an Excitebike for his side-b instead of using signature power-ups, items & abilities from his homeseries proper.
I’d honestly rework his neutral special to grabbing opponents with his hands rather than his mouth and shake them like how he does in WLSI. I’d also rework his down special into some kind of ground pound or ground punch.
Thank lord mods of Smash like PM and Smash Remix use more movesets and design from the Wario Land series rather than Ware. Still sad though considering those are mods of the game and not officially a part of Nintendo.
Wario Land 1 and 3 took up so much of my childhood. Well technically only 1. I was already 10 when the 3rd came out, so I guess my preteen years for it
Something that's always made me curious is whatever happened to Wario Land 3's composer Kozue Ishikawa. I had heard she retired in 2001, but I can't find any verified information on her. That seems to be a reoccurring theme with former Nintendo workers, Shinichi Shimomura, Ishikawa, and many others. Creepy.
I was wondering why Ishikawa wasn’t involved in anything after a while. It’s entirely possible that she’s just taking it easy and doesn’t want to be on the radar, but if that isn’t the case and something else potentially dire has happened then that’s a huge bummer.
Wario land 3 is the best, in my opinion. A level based metroidvania with puzzles and enemies that change based on the day/night cycle, and your character is immortal. It just seems the most complex in term of mechanics.
A masterful series that i love dearly. Thank you for this dive into it, now all i need is for pizza tower to come to the switch so it can come full circle. Keep up the good work, have a nice day and don't falter.
Wario Land 3 is probably my most played Gameboy Color game. I tried a demo of WL4 at Circuit City and just wasn't impressed. Personally I like 3 for, as you described, its nonlinear level design, puzzle platforming, and Metroid-vania progression system. It was that last aspect in particular which kept me playing for hours hoping the next chest would unlock a new ability.
So one day I bought a Game Boy Pocket from a thrift store for pretty cheap I was well aquatinted with the Game Boy Advance through the Bottom port on my DS. My many hours of Pokemon Leafgreen proves that much However, I wasn't well aquatinted with the mythical "Original Game Boy" as DS couldn't play those games for whatever reason I made my way through the GB library I found lying around like Pokemon Gold (with a dead battery of course) and Super Mario Bros Deluxe and a whole host of games I hadn't played yet. I ended up stumbling upon a shoebox with a copy of Wario Land stuck under the paper at the bottom It had a somewhat ripped label but I could read the text at the top. I stuck it into the Game Boy, most likely with another set of cheap AAAs to replace yet another pair of dying ones and started the game. From Wario taking down Syrup's pirate ship to Mario taking back his statue, I was completely enraptured with the game. I have no idea why I ended up liking it so much. It could've been the downpaced gameplay, the treasure hunting, the big sprites or the stage design. Something about the game just _clicked_ with me. Notably, I remember many of the stage designs despite not playing the game for a long time. I remember the beach level, the mountains, the forest with the cool train level, the hard ass Hot Cave and Tower levels and the hidden Glacier nearby Mt. Teapot. The game made me wonder and it made me explore. Most importantly, it's just a fun ass game. The best part is that it's not even the best one. Go play Wario Land. Go play all of them. They're some good stuff.
Wario Land 3 was so big for me as a kid. I kind of hated platformers when I was really little because I would always freak out when the character died, and since I was bad at video games, that was quite often. The fact that you couldn't die in Wario Land 3, and in fact needed to get hurt in order to progress in a lot of puzzles, completely opened my mind and I still love that game because of it. Wonderful video!!
Thank you for this video! Wario Land 4 is one of my favourite GBA games of all time and I'm a huge fan of the series. I understand Wario: Master of Disguise was not included, but it was the only platform Wario game on the DS, with treasures and power-up mechanics. What's great is that you mentioned Pizza Tower, which I hope turns out fantastic! I wish Nintendo would bring some of their franchises back to the Switch (Wario, Metroid, F-Zero, Star Fox, etc.). Otherwise we'd have to wait for the fans to bring their ideas to life.
Honestly, as a returning player from Mario Land 2 as a kid, Wario Land 1 was such an amazing and surreal experience. It was so much fun to combine the classic tried-and-true Mario formula with a more "tanky" powerhouse like Wario, and truly feel like you were playing a different game than what Nintendo had been offering for all those years before.
One of the biggest appeals of Wario Land to many people, was him being different from Nintendo's other protagonist. Unlike all of Nintendo's other big stars, Wario to this day is the only Nintendo franchise to have the main character not have a sense of justice. You're pretty much playing as the bad guy in the first few Wario titles.
Another thing that really makes wario land 4 my favorite is the sound design taking after the wario ware games. It really adds to the insanity and acts as a cool gate between the 2 franchises
There is 2 types of video you can expect from this channel. Bad quality bait, or superior videos with a lot of effort put into it, wich result in really good content.
2 and 3 were the thing for 10yr old me. Such great games. Loved 100%-ing them over and over again. And the concept of day-night cycle changing the level design allowing to navigate different areas was mind blowing.
12:15 Superjail? That’d be an awesome idea for a Superjail game. Either a Castlevania-like Metroidvania game where you use the Warden’s multiple powers and death machines as weapons and abilities. Or if they don’t want such an OP character, they could do a “beat em up” thing starring Alice beating up the inmates.
my somewhat concerning wario land obsession is returning so i'm binging all of its content in youtube and i liked immediately because of that glorious intro
Honestly there's a reason Wario Land 3 is my personal favorite game of all time. It's kooky, it's funny, it's lovable, and the soundtrack is unforgettable. I used to play Wario Land 3 on my GBA and 2DS on special ocassions, but once the randomizer came out, I played the game almost daily for about a year. Of course after playing a game daily for about a year the burn out catches up with you, but I still play it now and then.
Thanks for this video putting a spotlight on one of my favorite platformer game series. Wario Land 3 has been my all time favorite Gameboy game since I was old enough to grip a Gameboy Color as a toddler 17 years ago. I will admit I was an absolute fool as a child for not giving Wario Land 4 the fair shot I should have. I was staunchly against it purely for the health bar system and didn't bother going past two full levels. It removed what I liked about Wario Land, being able to just casually BS around without worrying about screw-ups being too detrimental. Hearing your point about how it made bosses a lot more fair to learn boss patterns made me realize how much frustration I felt in past games over being hit once and being yeeted out of the arena. The only reason I'm good at the bosses in previous games is because of all the frustrating trial and error it took to beat them. That doesn't make me enjoy 1-3 any less because they're still the same games I love to death, but you've definitely suaded me on Wario Land 4. I'm gonna go pop that game back in and give it another shot with a fresher perspective to really appreciate it for the gem it is. 👌
Wario Land 3 is one of my favourite games, it was pretty much a Metroidvania for the GBC, I lost my physical cartridge during my flight to (or from) Florida for a holiday and I was extremely upset by that.
It's always nice to see people to talk about how good the Wario games are. Sometimes I feel that Nintendo games are a bit devoid of personality, passion or creativity. This is not to say they are bad, they are highly-polished but that doesn't changes the fact that they feel very homogeneized and sanitized, but Wario (either Land or Ware) it's willing to throw everything at the wall in pure artistic expression.
Wario land, super mario land 3 was the first game i ever played, i played it probobly 300 times throughout my childhood and its always stuck with me through all my life as one of the best games i ever played
Wario Land 2 and 3 always stumped me as a kid and they felt impossible to beat. Brings back cursed memories but maybe now I'll finally give them a try.

>The only "new" Wario songs in Ultimate were just WarioWare songs that were in Brawl but not 4. Only Wario Land song is a Shake It rip.
>Only 2 Wario Land spirits, 3 if you count Count Cannoli.
For how much people praise Smash on series representation, it really screws some over. Sonic is another good example of a series totally fucked by Smash, and I'm not even that big of a Sonic fan.
@@omnipasta
As much as I love him, Pac-Man is another thing that comes to mind.
I was already 10 when the 3rd came out, so I guess my preteen years for it
Awesome channel Mish.
Finally, some light can be shed onto one of the best series ever made
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has this much love for the Wario Land series. Keep it up my guy
Wario is one of my favorite characters, so I'll definitely try playing this series if I get the chance.
Why does Virtual Boy Warioland look like modern indie games
Because it’s that good
Wario land 3 is the best, in my opinion.
"Look guys look it's one of my greatest achievements"
Wario Land 3 is probably my most played Gameboy Color game. I tried a demo of WL4 at Circuit City and just wasn't impressed. Personally I like 3 for, as you described, its nonlinear level design, puzzle platforming, and Metroid-vania progression system. It was that last aspect in particular which kept me playing for hours hoping the next chest would unlock a new ability.
wario games getting some much deserved love, great video!
Wario Land 4 is literally the best game on the GBA.
Mother 3
Sean Davis nah
The gameplay of mother 3 wasn’t that fun tbh, probably cuz I don’t like most rpg’s. I do think that wario land 4 is one of the best
TRUE
Although not Wario "Land", Wario "World" is one of my favorite games for the gamecube. I just wish it was longer
1:35 "Nice, thank you."
4:29 "Wow, such a terrible liar."
So one day I bought a Game Boy Pocket from a thrift store for pretty cheap
I was well aquatinted with the Game Boy Advance through the Bottom port on my DS. My many hours of Pokemon Leafgreen proves that much
However, I wasn't well aquatinted with the mythical "Original Game Boy" as DS couldn't play those games for whatever reason
I made my way through the GB library I found lying around like Pokemon Gold (with a dead battery of course) and Super Mario Bros Deluxe and a whole host of games I hadn't played yet.
I ended up stumbling upon a shoebox with a copy of Wario Land stuck under the paper at the bottom
It had a somewhat ripped label but I could read the text at the top.
All Wario Land games are amazing! Especially the first one and the fourth one have a special place in my heart.
Damn, a shame he didn't get to talk about shake it, it was my childhood, all drawn, absolute beast of a game
An unconventional series of Mario spin-offs that generally are considered to be great games consistently?
INCREDIBLE, INCREDIBLE!
Imo Wario Land 3's Golf Minigame is still much better than WL2 memory game to get treasure from levels.
Wario has been my favourite character since playing Mario party 2 and smash brawl cemented him my fav
Wario Land 4's intro is the coolest cutscene Nintendo ever made and it's on the fucking GBA.
Okay first of all Yoshi’s Island does count, but second of all I loved this video. The Wario Land games deserve more love.
Otherwise we'd have to wait for the fans to bring their ideas to life.
mishu always out here with the constant bangers
keep up the good work u rock brother
I really hope Pizza Tower comes to the Switch. I NEED TO PLAY IT!
Wouldn’t be a Wario Land video without Living with Wario references at least a million times XD
You want fun?, Wario gives you fun
Honestly, as a returning player from Mario Land 2 as a kid, Wario Land 1 was such an amazing and surreal experience. It was so much fun to combine the classic tried-and-true Mario formula with a more "tanky" powerhouse like Wario, and truly feel like you were playing a different game than what Nintendo had been offering for all those years before.
The intro and the transition to WL4 were amazing :D
7:16 - "Wario looks kinda... weird in this game."
Implying that Wario looks like a typical human being in other games.
Kek
I have a feeling more people would talk about how good this series is if it starred someone other than Wario.
Barring Samus, Wario is probably my favorite Nintendo character.
Or if new titles or remakes happened.
What? You know he got so many games because the character was insanely popular and still very much is.
@@PutnamentalAnimation Lmao this so much. He's literally one of Nintendo's biggest mascots.
I think it's important to mention that the lack of Wario Land pretty much was caused by R&D1 disbanding.
2 and 3 were the thing for 10yr old me. Such great games. Loved 100%-ing them over and over again. And the concept of day-night cycle changing the level design allowing to navigate different areas was mind blowing.
This is why Wario is better than Mario
12:15
Superjail?
That’d be an awesome idea for a Superjail game. Either a Castlevania-like Metroidvania game where you use the Warden’s multiple powers and death machines as weapons and abilities.
Or if they don’t want such an OP character, they could do a “beat em up” thing starring Alice beating up the inmates.
Wow, this was really good, I didnt expect Wario Land 4 to be that loved
Incredible, incredible.
Thank you, this game introduced me to Pizza Tower and I couldn't be more grateful.
my somewhat concerning wario land obsession is returning so i'm binging all of its content in youtube and i liked immediately because of that glorious intro
Warioland 4 just happened to be one of the only gameboy advance games I had as a kid and it’s still one of my favorites
God I fucking love this channel, the content is so good.
jeez wario land on the virtual boy has gorgeous animations
Wario Land 3 is one of my favourite games, it was pretty much a Metroidvania for the GBC, I lost my physical cartridge during my flight to (or from) Florida for a holiday and I was extremely upset by that.
You want some fun? Wario show you fun!
That because the wario land games were done by a different group at Nintendo.
HOOH didnt expect my boy to be in this. Pizza tower is going to rock.
I LOVE WARIO LAND 4! Thanks for mentioning Pizza tower. Will try it out. :]
BUT UHM, LOOK GUYS, LOOK
My first Wario Land was Shake It, but it wasn't until I played 4 from the ambassador program that I knew I needed to play the rest.
But um... Look guys look! It's one of my greatest achievements Wario Land 4 for the GameBoy Advance. Ha ha!
Wario land, super mario land 3 was the first game i ever played, i played it probobly 300 times throughout my childhood and its always stuck with me through all my life as one of the best games i ever played
The animation im shake it is so beautiful
rewatching this video and seeing how different pizza tower used to look is super interesting
Wario Land 2 and 3 always stumped me as a kid and they felt impossible to beat. Brings back cursed memories but maybe now I'll finally give them a try.
Wario Land for the Game Boy was like the only game I played besides pokemon yellow growing up.
Hey, for the people out there checking on the Wario Land series, there is a Wario Land II rom that adds color to the game like GBC game.
Wario Land II and III were the perfect platformers for a handled device.
Its wild to think that 2 years ago was when I first heard about Pizza Tower.
Now that i finally got around to playing its full release, ive been non stop playing it!
Will definitely need to check out the WarioLand series after im done P-Ranking my life.
AAAAAAAAAA THIS HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE GAME FOR ALMOST 12 YEARS OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG
I don’t think I’ve heard so much about Virtual Boy Wario Land. Thank you, kind sir.
I love your videos man. Keep it comin. I'll be here to view them every time.
