To give an idea of just how insane Thousand Arrows is, Zygarde went from a one-note nonpresence in OU to an overwhelming threat with a seemingly endless number of sets it could run. Literally the ONLY move it 100% needed was Thousand Arrows; the rest of its slots were customizable.
Honestly I'd personally say Thousand Arrows is probably just the #1 most broken signature move ever made, even with moves like Rage Fist and Population Bomb, just because of the insane consistency and immediacy it possesses while still having a crazy effect on top of it.
Thousand Arrows singlehandedly pushed Zygarde from UUBL in Gen 6, and even UU or RU in the XY era iirc, to straight up banned in Gen 7 despite that gen's power creep.
It already had things like E-Speed, Coil, DDance, Glare, etc beforehand. But Thousand Arrows let it go from being walled by every Flying type and Levitate mon ever to "give me your Skarmory."
No Retreat can actually be used multiple times. If you use a move like Jaw Lock beforehand, you can then use No Retreat multiple times. Thankfully only Smeargle has both moves.
Baton pass
@@TheRedSewaddle251? That wouldn’t work with no retreat
@@theshadowking3198why not? Things like U-turn work

I couldn’t have been the only one to notice the dragon water type Dracovish had a signature move fishious REND while the dragon water Palkia has spacial REND. Then the dragon electric type Dracozolt had a signature move BOLT beak and Zekrom has BOLT Strike. I’m definitely over analyzing but something unique
All three dragon fire types that exist in gen 9 have signature moves as well.
Reshiram has blue flare, turtonator has shell trap and gouging fire has burning bulwark
And technically fusion bolt and flare count where as blast burn wouldn't but I agree something is up 😂
Remember when only delibird got present? Delibird remembers
I'm going to go against the letter of your rules while still adhering to the spirit.
The best normal-type signature move is Sketch. That one move is what makes Smeargle so versatile.
THATS ITS GIMIC IT DOESNT COUNT AS A MOVE!!!!! QUIT YAPPING!!!!!!@@
Virgin Judgement that can be any type
Vs
Chad Sketch that can be any move.
I actually think I agree with you here.
@@tristanbowles7258I doubt you can sketch disable though.
I find it crazy that nobody thought of Sketch. It's so good that it's one of the clause of the video, its so good it gave a use to 250BST stat pokemon. It's so good that it can nerf other pokemon that dont have it because the possibility of smeargle using their move. Sketch is the best move in the game by virtue of being able to copy almost any move.
Sketch is def the best Normal type move
Sketchis good..... if it already sketched a move
If you haven't, then you completely rely on the enemies move to do something
@@Hoysoy4141"ERM AKSHUALLY! ☝️🤓"
No
@zyouri121 sketch is not a move that you use in combat, it allow you to have the use you want on your mon.
And you can also sketch your ally in double to not have to depend on the randomness of the enemy and to not waste time
@@SomeoneLon i know, that's why it's the best move. But Mattbud never specified "Best move for combat".
Best rock signature move is Mighty Cleave which is 95 power 100 accuracy physical attack which breaks and bypass protect
Depends on the format, Salt Cure is better in Singles while Mighty Cleave is better in Doubles
I was thinking maybe Ogrebonk's Ivy Cudgel would be the best Rock move as any of the Mask it holds gives it ×1.2 damage boost to all moves.
@@lipika2841 mighty cleave is better in doubles as it is one of the most safe and reliable attacks in the game, bypassing protect and only being 5 points weaker than ivy cudgel, and if iron boulder is holding a booster energy it can recive a 1.3 attack boost with no drawback
@@Nmoment-uv6jcit loses booster energy when switched out tho whilst mask is permanent
@@Nmoment-uv6jcintimidate would also render ur boost useless
Did bro just forget about Bloodmoon on an already strong pokemon who's ability is basically buffed Scrappy, making no opponent immune to it? Sure, you can't use it twice in a row, but that's what Protect and Calm Mind are for.
Blood Moon is only 140 base power, compared to the effective 300 of Population Bomb. I could be wrong about this, but with Maushold's move being slightly more than double the power of Blursaluna's, with it having slightly more than half its relevant attacking stat(75 atk to 135 spatk), it still outdamages it. Not to mention it being multi-hit to bypass substitute and sash/sturdy, and being usable multiple times in a row.
its not always 10 hits it probably averages around 5-6 every time you use it so its essentially 150 bp unless you are lucky.@@TrixterTheFemboy
Use of a wide lens gives it 99% accuracy, which gives you a 90.4% chance to hit all 10
@@ashiscool_with wide lens it rarely doesn't hit all 10 times
I kinda did forget. But I still think I would have taken Population Bomb above it. A close 2nd.
Bug: you don’t have to be good, just the best
I was going to correct you and express immense confusion when you didn’t pick Techno Blast for Bug, but then I looked it up.
It’s really a Normal type move without any drives?!?!?! Maaaaaaan Genesect just cannot have his day.
In gen 7, Xerneas can use Fairium Z with Geomancy. Sure it can't execute it in 1 turn like with Power Herb, but it gives +1 to speed and offensive/defensive stats on the 1st turn, which helps it survive easier.
loved watching this entire video
With how strong Steel and Water types are defensively I'm perfectly fine with Salt Cure wrecking them.
This video was great! Keep it up man
Last respects is definitely better than rage fist imo
Basculegion and Houndstone learn it, so it's not a signature
In that case only chatter of chatot is a signature move bc all other signature moves get learned by smeargle
Or v create gets learned by rayquaza and sacred fire gets learned by entei so… last respect counts
There is a lot of ways to set up rage fist yourself whereas last respects banks on your teammates dying which is two at max
@@Fletchender Last Respects was never a signature move so I couldn’t add it. It would be there for sure. The other moves were at least signature moves at one point which let me add them even if another mon got it later.
I can't unsee the MandJtv font 😭
Awesome! I was waiting for this one. 100% curious what the best moves in pokemon are.
Great video! Subbed! Also I want to say that Salt Cure is by far the best move ever made.
Salt Cure is the only move so good that you often lose value by clicking stealth rocks on turn 1 instead. SC ---> Protect -----> SC'ing the switch-in has been my bread and butter all Gen
A small correction
Maushold is doubles usually prefers friend guard over technician
…in doubles. Singles is a thing too.
@@lwfawn yeah , didn't I mention "in doubles" , coz he mentioned "in doubles , technician strats"
Yeah I mentioned when it wasn’t being a support mon it liked Population Bomb. I know it has shifted to more of a support mon as of late.
I'm surprised Teleport didn't get a mention at all. It began as signature move of the Abra line, and was widely distributed over the generations afterwards. It also didn't see any competitive usage until Gen 8s' buff to it. However, the move received a bigger glow-up than Leech Life. So much so that in Gen 9 (up until DLC 2), it was only learned by the Ralts lines and was effectively a signature move. A move so strong it became a signature move. I'd say that deserves a mention.
Aw yes, my favorite move "leave the fucking battle"
@@S0fti_ Hence why I mentioned it's buffed form lol
Teleport was a TM in gen 1 iirc so it wasn't ever really a signature move
If it was sword and shield, best steel type move goes to Behemoth Blade, 100 base damage, 100% accuracy and double the damage when attacked a Dynamax Pokemon making it 200 base power move with 100% accuracy
Annihilape, the perfect rage machine. It's fist will shatter every meta-game it lands in.
I just want to say that silk trap imo is much better than attack order. The abililty to protect and slow targets is massive. Imagine your going to get outsped- you can block, then outspeed next turn. And the fact it can be used every other turn, this move can be huge for setting up your team or hindering foes. Its just a much better protect and the fact protect is sutch a good move, means this is even better
Woah, nice segue!
Bro you should have way more viewers, your quality is insane!
While smeargle shouldnt be generally mentioned, it actually makes very good use of Population Bomb, which finally gives it a move it can deal damage with, since its also a normal type with technician
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS YOU ARE AMAZING PLEASE KEEP MAKING VIDEOS I AM BEGGING
I feel like Dragon Energy should’ve also been in consideration for Dragon type moves. It’s a shame that such a powerful move is stuck on Regidrago.
Psychic should have been Psycho Boost
for rock its definetly the new move that iron boulder has because it hits through protect
MattBud's videos are exceedingly thoughtful and well researched. Hopefully this guy has 50k subscribers one year from now.
I appreciate it. Although this kind of looks like a comment someone would post from an alt😂
It does sound like that lol my bad
Surprised Volcanion's move was runner up over Walking Wake's Hydro Steam, which is not only a pretty strong water move, it gets boosted both by Rain and Sun, with Sun usually being a counter to water moves
22:59 gave me an audio jumpscare in my right side ear phone am i the only one ? lmao
Honestly, my only complaint is how easily you counted out Silk Trap. Dropping Speed is an incredible second effect on a Protect clone. I honestly think it's better than Attack and Defend Order combined.
maybe it’s nostalgia but i agree with psystrike. like as far as signature moves go it is an OG. (although idk when the actual move was implemented in the games). like no matter what if i picture mewtwo i’m gonna picture it using aggressive psychic energy bc of the movie & the move is actually good
Here's my list. It's similar to yours, but there are a few differences.
Normal: Population Bomb
Water: Fishious Rend
Fire: V-create (Pyro Ball is the other main contender).
Grass: Ivy Cudgel (Runner-ups are Seed Flare and Matcha Gotcha).
Electric: Bolt Beak (Thunderclap and Electro Drift are runner-ups).
Psychic: Psystrike (It's between this, Photon Geyser and
Flying: Oblivion Wing (It was between this and Aeroblast).
Fighting: Collision Course
Bug: Attack/Defend/Heal Order (Not really any competition here).
Dark: Ceaseless Edge
Rock: Salt Cure
Steel: Double Iron Bash (Shame Iron Crown doesn't get Sharpness, 'cus that would put Tachyon Cutter in the competition. Behemoth Blade is also noteworthy.)
Fairy: Geomancy
Dragon: Dragon Energy
Poison: Dire Claw
Ice: Glacial Lance
Ghost: Astral Barrage
Ground: Thousand Arrows
Here are the reasonings for my divergences...
Grass: Ivy Cudgel is way more reliable on Ogerpon than Seed Flare is on non-Sky Shaymin (who was banned more for its Air Slash antics anyway). Even then, Seed Flare would take second if you discount Ivy Cudgel due to its variable types, as Matcha Gotcha is far more threatening than Shaymin's Seed Flare (except as Shaymin-Sky), being a combination of Scald and Giga Drain, with only a slight loss in accuracy as the only drawback (and I know how you feel about Scald).
Fighting: Koraidon is disgustingly strong and this effectively causing its super-effective hits to do 2.5x damage instead, further boosted by Orichalcum Pulse, make this one a no brainer, even for as potentially powerful as Victory Dance is.
Dragon: Clangorous Soul is strong, for sure, but I find Regidrago's more instantly damage dealing move to be better, especially since Kommo-O sacrifices its own HP to use CS. It's that health-sacrifice that also prevents Fillet Away from being being mentioned.
Ghost: Rage Fist is contingent on Annilhilape actually surviving hits which while yes, it is bulky, Calyrex-Shadow is out-and-out broken as hell and Astral Barrage is a huge part of that- it wouldn't be anywhere near as threatening if it had to rely on Shadow Ball.
Sacred sword would be good for fighting if it still was swords of justice signature
Its amazing how people see the list yet somehow they either miss or skip the disclaymers and rules of set list
This video just taught me that Jynx has two spikes on her dress for no reason!
I don’t know how it would fall within the rules, but in theory I guess could be considered the best normal move, despite the entire point of the move being that it gets replaced.
Also I’m surprised you didn’t mention pre-nerf dark void as at least an honourable mention
Finally. Someone finally acknowledges just how powerful Melmetal is. I salute you, sir.
Make a ranking of most unlikely things to happens in pkmn live mirage island, pokerus espontaneuly or finding a feebas inicialy
Some good contenders are also grassy glide for grass and last respect for ghost imo. That said, really good video
Grassy glide isn't a signature move
@@ArlecchinoAKAFather ah wow I didn't know that. Rillaboom's usage made me think it was his signature, but you are right 😅
Houndstone also gets Last respects so it's not a signature move anymore
@@kiwi40238 I don't know how it works in this case. Like, it was only Houndstones, but then they introduced it in the fish's move set. I guess it makes sense it's not a signature move anymore
For Grass, if you discount the type-variable Ivy Cudgel, I'd say Sinistcha's Matcha Gotcha takes #1, by virtue of Matcha Gotcha being Scald and Giga Drain rolled into one move.
wait oblivion wing is a flying type wtf i thought it was dark... ya know for the dark type legendary...
It would be too op with Yveltal's Dark Aura
Yveltal is a dark and flying type pokemon so it makes perfect sense
10:27 don't diss Twineedle. I used to see it on Mega Bedrill for a revenge kill mega boost back in the day
That’s Fell Stinger
Feel like Electro Drift should’ve been included. 133 bp (terrain) 100% accurate move that does extra to special coming off Miraidons boosted spatk is arguably more reliable than bolt beak.
4:08 NOOOOOOO
Would Dark Void have been a top choice for the dark type, if not for those drastic nerfs a couple gens ago?
Absolutely it would
Yeah most likely. Its synergy with bad dreams and good accuracy for a sleep move made it super good. Would still be a tough choice with Ceaseless Edge being such a great move
V-Create on Rayquaza would have been bonkers if the mon could actually access it and if it could use it under P-Don
It... could. The event Rayquaza could be transferred into ORAS without losing V-Create (this means Mega Ray also had access to V-Create. Heck, in Smogon's movesets for Mega Ray in Gens 6 and 7, V-Create and Earthquake are interchangeable for the fourth move.)
Dear MattBud,
If you had to coin a signature move for yourself what would you choose?
This can be a move from the Pokémon universe or a completely made up move relating to your everyday life.
Cheers,
Your #1 Fan
It’s crazy how many of these are new moves. Power creep is very obvious in moves these days.
I think Psycho Boost is another strong contender for the Psychic-type. Draco Meteor, Leaf Storm, Overheat, and Fleur Cannon are already elite moves despite their drawbacks, and Psycho Boost is currently the only Sp. Atk drop recoil move to not get nerfed from 140 to 130 BP going into Gen 6. Even the meager Deo-S can still deal solid damage with this move
Dragon is another with strong runner ups, I don't think Clangorous Soul is the best due to its bit of recoil. Dragon Energy is an incredibly menacing move. 150 BP with no immediate drawback is always a recipe for success, and switching into this move is indeed quite tricky without a Fairy-type. I think Fickle Beam is another strong contender for Dragon. A move useful enough that Hydrapple sometimes forgoes Draco Meteor, which is pretty rare among special Dragons. 30% chance for a 160 BP nuke is pretty decent odds, and the move's average base power is 102, eclipsing Dynamax Cannon and Spacial Rend. If Hydrapple was any faster, you'd hear so many complaints about this move.
If Hydrapple was faster, Fickle Beam would be the least of anybody's worries, what with Hydrapple's colossal bulk and decent SpA, plus excellent abilities.
I understand where you're coming from with Seed Flare, but I would say Flower Trick is the far better move because it always crits. Yes Seed Flare does more damage and lowers sp. defence, but the mechanics of crits make it more valuable. Crits ignore all stat changes. It doesn't care if your pokemon has minus six attack while the opponent has plus six defense, it's still dealing maximum damage. Being able to output its maximum damage under any and all conditions makes Flower Trick the only attack of its kind, and insane given its base power.
I think Precipice blades and to a lesser extent Origin pulse should have been at least honorable mentions. Ok Thousands arrow and Fishious rend are broken ; but such powerful spread moves on such busted mons...
Also, for Psychic type moves... I find Lunar blessing SO annoying in VGC... Very difficult to compare with offensive moves, so I wouldn't know where to rank it, but definitely an contender.
Scald, Knock Off, Last Respects are moves that have defined whole metagames
They are not signature
Clangrous soul plus reversal
4:10 bro killed a shiny 💀
Quiver dance 😭😭
Arceus, beaten by a tiny group of mice.
Actually, the only downside for Steam Eruption isn't the 95% accuracy (which doesn't really matter) but moreso the maximum of 8 PP, making it much less spammable than Scald.
95% does matter a lot in competitive pokemon, that's why you will see players run weaker moves that have 100% accuracy instead to be more consistent, since consistency and strategy wins you tournaments, not big damage casino roulette
@@link3629 not when the inaccurate move is way stronger though.
Dragon Ascent has to be number 1 because it’s use gives you access to the strongest Pokémon to exist, which is better than healing a bit
three moves i thought were missing were precipice blades (1000 arrows is better tho), Origin Pulse which is the higher damage when combined with kyogres rain, and Dark Void which was so good that gamefreak nerfed it to the ground. if you thought going from 80 to 70 base power for wicked blow was bad this was worse, going from 100% accuracy to 50% accuracy. litterally useless.
Dark Void went from 85% to 50%. It never had 100% accuracy.

Rising Voltage and Expanding Force are two of my favs.

How much did eternabeam do that a pretty good move if I remember right
It's 160 base power 90% accuracy. But it is a recharge move making it inferior to Dynamax Cannon which is 100 power 100% accurate and has no drawbacks
for the psychic type the best signature move gotta be trick

@@ZakingYT yeah true. mighty cleave is probably the best physical rock-type move in the entire franchise
I'd argue that Ivy Cudgel has steep competition from Matcha Gotcha (Sinistcha's signature move).
@@Hyperneosonic97 i'd say that because ivy cudgel has more base power, is more accurate and has an increased chance to crit that it is better than matcha gotcha.
matcha gotcha is a good spread move, don't get me wrong. especially with the passive health regen and chance to burn. but it just doesn't sweep through teams live ivy cudgel does because it just misses too much, and the burn status doesn't make too much of a difference against special attackers.
grass attacks are resisted by a lot of types as well, so more often than not a grass spread move is going to be resisted by one of the opponent's pokemon on their side of the field. so not only are you not doing much damage to the pokemon that resists matcha gotcha, but you're actually losing 25% of your damage against the other pokemon that you're actually trying to hit, because spread moves do less damage when they hit multiple targets.
it also helps that ivy cudgel can change types depending on your ogerpon mask, giving you more coverage than just grass attacks.
@@yamummyyummy4785 Imho the thing is though is that much of Ivy Cudgel's utility is _because_ it changes types: It is simultaneously a grass-type move, a water-type move, a fire-type move and a rock-type move- Ogerpon's mask forms wouldn't NEARLY be as good (especially Hearthflame) without Ivy Cudgel switching types. So similarly to Judgement, Multi-Attack and Tera Starstorm, can we really count it?
If we discount Ivy Cudgel because it changes type, Matcha Gotcha does win out.
