  • Heating a boat with a diesel heater is where it's at. We are in the Pacific Northwest and we do winter boating which means IT"S COLD! So how do we heat our aluminum boat? We use a hydronic heating system and a Dickinson heater. Both are diesel and they keep us nice and cozy!

    To get away from the lazy orange flame which produces soot you have to turn up the fan assist...the problem with this is that more heat from the inside of the boat gets pulled out and goes up the chimney as lost heat. You have the room on your boat so I would add a designated air supply from outside the boat to supply the combustion chamber with air for combustion. Very interesting...

      Thanks for the advice Greg! I have played with the assist fan and had decent results. It still seems to be a bit dirty though. I have toyed with the idea of adding a fresh air supply but need to do some figuring first to make sure it is going to work well whilst looking nice.

      @@OnboardTangaroa maybe bring it up from below where you have that metal box that the heater sits on with the air intake from the outside...or from down deep in the bowels of the boat. I have a small 37 foot sailboat and don't have the space to put one in but my boat is small enough where the Dickinson roasts me out after three hours on low setting #1. I run the fan on the lowest setting all the time and get a clean bright yellow blue flame with almost no soot especially when you first light the diesel. Shoot me your e-mail and I will send you a picture....Best SV Aquila...Shilshole Marina.

      @@OnboardTangaroa I have a good friend in the US we meant at Bedwell Harbour 57 years ago. He lives in New York now. Unfortunately he is dying of cancer and is spending his last months in hospital. I turned him on to your channel as he loved working on boats and poking around the gulf islands. So watching your videos and living in your story gives him much joy. So thanks for that. Bruce

    It's a diesel heater supposed to burn blue flame to significantly reduce soot?

    • @OnboardTangaroa
      @OnboardTangaroa  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching. I can say that this heater even from new has never burned a blue flame regardless of settings. Not sure if its due to flue design or something else?

    I have the same dickenson and mine burns a nice blue flame, You have yours way to high I've had 4or5 different ones since the early 80's and never had any soot. even from the big cook stoves with ovens. My new boat a spencer 53 has a Kobola diesel heater like your big one that pumps water thru the whole boat but I haven't had it running yet They sound like there a great stove. Still have to figure it out! Whats the name of your shop? love that heavy duty pipe!

    • @OnboardTangaroa
      @OnboardTangaroa  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our shop is Carmena Performance in Victoria BC. As for the burn - we are still learning. Do you mean the chimney is too high? or the flame is too high because too much diesel or fan?

    • @theislandpackrat
      @theislandpackrat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OnboardTangaroa No I think having that much chimney is great will help it to not blow out, But your flame is really too high. The problem is with a big boat like that you don't get much heat from the smaller stoves, I had the big antarctic stove in my 32' nicholson and it would bring it up to 80 or 90 degrees in the boat. But in this new boat the little one won't even get it to 70. As for the fan I've never used the fan on one they've never worked. When you light it use about a teaspoon or more of methyl hydrate in stove then about a inch piece of toilet paper to light it. it will burn blue until the diesel starts to burn then more yellow, But if the meth. goes out don't put more in when it's hot or will Really flame out. It's like gas.

      Blaine here, I currently can't get it to burn any leaner. The needle is adjusted to its bare minimum and if I go any lower it just goes out. I don't think the two 45 degree bends are doing it any favors. Unfortunately the crane is directly above so I can't go straight. We do have it a bit leaner typically than it shows in the video. I have found that if it's any bigger I get a bit of black on the window and if it's any smaller I get deposits built up in the burner. I will be adding a day tank soon which should allow me to get the feed a bit slower. It's constant experiment with it to find the sweet spot.

    How big is your boat? I put a Dickinson Newport on a 35' sailboat. So far I'm not impressed but that being said I've never turned it up past 3 and usually run it at 1.5 or so.

      We have a 78' boat. It only heats the main salon and galley which are open concept. When it is below freezing...it has troubles keeping up but we are all windows and they need replacing. We use a Hurricane hydronic heater to heat the staterooms and wheelhouse. We have one hot water loop going into the bow which was thr old crew quarters and one going intonthe stern where there are three staterooms. A fan blows up from the bow into the wheelhouse. The Dickinson is our "ambience" heater

    Those elbows are not hurting you. Turn the flow down until you get a bluish yellow flame.
    And try it without that H cap… see how that works..
