Rex on bass has always been so so so so so very important to the entire feel and sound of Pantera. He's so solid, but when he shines through like that it's undeniable how much he means.
As a bassist, we always make the joke that no one knows the bass is there… until it’s not. That’s how important the bass is, especially in any kind of groove music.
I agree that you need to watch Domination from Moscow. 1.6 million people at least! Dime and Vinnie were longtime friends of mine, even before Phil came along. Darrell introduced me to Phil while playing beer bong at The Basement before they opened one night. Picked Phil’s head up from the bar by his hair and made him say hi. I was a local rock/metal radio DJ. Dime let go of his hair, and Phil face planted back onto the bar. Darrell was the nicest person ever. They gave me their lp first to play on air. The tour with which they stopped in Moscow, my friend from ZROCK, MADD Maxx, who didn’t drink or do drugs, was brought along simply to tend to Phil. He’d make sure Phil’s partying didn’t kill him. He’d get him to bed in the hotel, safe and sound, and then early morning would go see the sights of wherever they were. He’d go back to the hotel in time to get Phil up to get ready for the nights show. What a job! Free tour of the world! ☮️❤️😎🎼
Its a heavy ass song but if you wanna hear Vinnie go nuts, you gotta check out Slaughtered. He does para-paradiddles with the dome of the ride and the snare through the back half of the song! Its fantastic!
Vulgar Display of Power is their “second” album of this style of music. They started out as a “glam” metal band but decided to switch up to this “groove” metal sound and thus the genre was born. Cowboys From Hell is the first incarnation of “groove” metal from them and you should start their to see how it’s progressed 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻💯
Ahem, everyone should start with Pussy Tight, Steve. Joking aside, there's one piece from pre-CFH era that's really worth listening to, Blue Light Turnin' Red. Dimebag was something else man.
Certainly not a song I would choose to showcase Vinnie but it absolutely does showcase how he was absolute support for his brother Dime. He was like Ringo in that regard...the song (and my very talented brother) come first. And that's what is happening here. His brother came up with a very simple but absolutely rocking riff so Vinny was like "I'm gonna deliver something simple but rocking". And those 2 really do play well off each other.
I've never really gotten into them, but this is a great song. And it's a great song for sniffing out a weak ensemble. There's so much space in this song, it hits harder as a result, and it's deceptively hard to play if you don't have good pocket.
Andrew I'm so glad you are now getting into Pantera. I know you only guarantee Paypal requests but please try to fit in Domination live from Moscow. You will be blow away.
Thank you Andrew for going down the Pantera rabbit hole. I was in high school 1990-1994. I saw Pantera for the first time in high school at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. My second time seeing them was at the Aragon again after Far Beyond Driven dropped. The first song they played off that album was Strenght Beyond Strenght. It blasted our faces off. Check it out! Also, counterpoint to that is 25 Years from the same album. Sick groovey song. Do it!
I graduated H.S. in 94 also. I was blessed to see Pantera live 6 or 7 times, even was prepared to go awol from the military to be a roady for them 😂, in the end the two blondes Vinnie had made it on the bus before I did. I have all 4 of their actual autographs tattooed around the cfh symbol. I FUCKIN MISS PANTERA LIVE SHOWS! Rip to Dime and Vinnie.
Pantera is a master class in how to bring groove to metal - and influenced so many bands to come. The way the drums support the guitar groove is on point, punches where it's needed, and space where the guitars need to be the star.
The classic Vinnie setup of the early to mid 1990's. Neumann Tackified football gloves (thumbless), playing with the butt end of the sticks, Remo Falam K kevlar head on the snare batter,Drums triggered(except sometimes the snare drum was also mic'd),black heads on the bottom of the overhead toms,Danmar wood beaters w/ Danmar impact pads, 14x14,15x15,18x18 toms,24x24 (2) kicks ,8x14 snare...and sat super low on the drum seat, always had a bandana on,had simmons pads (2 to the left of his main hi hat and one mounted flat above his right kick drum by his ride cymbal) they were covered with danmar impact pads on the striking surface. He used them to trigger the a sampled cross stick sound effect and a sampled cabasa sound effect for the song This Love
Vinnie Paul was an absolute monster on the drums. That ending wasn't drumming it was THUNDER! I've been in the middle of their mosh pit and live, he makes you bounce and rebound and vibrate, it's A VISCERAL experience. They damn near killed me both times, an first I still had Megadeth to survive lol. I loved every bit of it. Cemetery Gates is amazing, Mouth For War, Floods, 5 Minutes Alone all awesome too, for starters lol
Wow, this takes me back to having a sneaky smoke with the lads behind the shed at school!😂The gate the guitarist has on his axe is so chunkingly awesome; maybe time to dust of my old Pantera LP collection... PS: Today's "That what she said" jumped out my left channel so loud it made a little poo come out.😂😂
Pantera 96 in Melbourne was to this day the most powerful display of live playing I have ever seen, they were ludicrously tight, Vin played for 100 mins absolutely note perfect and played with such intensity and control. His playing I always respected as well thought out, he had power to burn and wrote his parts very musically for the style of music and they were always proud to be groove metal. RIP Vin and Dime two of the best to ever do this type of music.
Vinnie is and was an inspiration! He has so many classic tracks, can't go wrong with any of them. He was a groove master with tons of power! Speed too.
Pantera is a great band and the Abbott brothers( Vinnie and Dime) are legends. Vinnie is in my top 3 drummers of all time. I would recommend watching Slaughtered, Domination, Revolution is my name, 13 steps, or Strength Beyond Strength.
Cemetery Gates is another one like Walk that’s an absolute classic Pantera song. Also great to check out from one of my all time favourite albums, Becoming, 5 Minutes Alone & Good Friends And A Bottle Of Pills (explicit lyrics)
That "Please Don't Hurt Em Hammer" vinyl record in the background is bringing back some memories! I had that album (and others) on cassette tape as a child. Well done, sir!
Pantera, master class in groove metal... Walk, Cemertary Gates, Fukin Hostile, Cowboys From Hell, Hollow, Mouth For War, The Badge, the list goes on! Love'em and hoping to see them in London soon. Dimebag (strings), Vinnie (sticks), Phil (vocals) and Rex (bass), great combo!
It's one of the trademarks of Pantera, very rarely there is rhythm guitar under the solos. I used to think it was odd but it really makes the solo and bass stand out
Great reaction, Andrew! Pantera's album "Vulgar Display of Power" (1992) is exceptional!!! I recommend the reaction, analysis of a track from this masterful album: "A New Level" (studio version)... You will be impressed by this song specifically due to several factors, extremely interesting musical characteristics: the dynamics, the rhythm, the main riff, etc...Greetings from Brazil!!!
This was an anthem among my friends during the late 90's in Christchurch, blasting it in the car on a Friday/Saturday night Colombo Street cruise or speeding round the Summit Road.
Vinnie has always been my favorite drummer because of the sheer power of the drumbeats, in some of the live shows in the mid to late nineties his drumbeats sound like cannons it’s awesome to hear.
Was a D1 athlete and played semipro after graduating for a bit. This was literally the only song I would ever listen to pregame. And it was all that was ever needed to enter that necessary mindset.
I didn't get into Pantera either until just before Dimebags death (RIP) but throw a dart at a list of their songs and it's going to land on a banger. As for their recording, one interesting tidbit is part of Dimebags signature sound was his guitar was tuned a few cents sharp. Meaning if he played a C it wouldn't be an C but slightly higher without getting near a C#, which gave his guitar that sort of buzzsaw tone. They would also typically scoop all the mids while boosting the highs and lows.
Shredding skin is one of my favorite Pantera songs along with what I think is Vinnie at his best. It's groovy and dark at the same time. Worth a listen
You should check out Broken (official music video) next. Love the drums on that & it's either my favourite / 2nd favourite Pantera song of all time. Steps to Nowhere is my other favourite Pantera track.
Those Michael Scott’s interventions never gets old ! Besides that, “F-ing hostile”… a nice song about a guy that was in a good mood, to say the least 😅
"Walk" is basically the theme song that would play in my head if I was an angry kaiju...just walking through town kickin' over buildings and talking mad s*** while doing it.
The simple fact that there is no rhythm guitar is that there is no second guitar player in the band. Dimebag Darrell is the only guitar player. You have Vinnie Paul on drums, Rex Brown on bass guitar, Dimebag Darrell on guitar and Phil Anselmo on vocals. The fact that PanterA only plays the available instruments and does not overdub the guitar is indeed great!
Look for the most obscure Pantera song from 1990 and on and you will see they put their all into every song. They have no filler songs on their albums. No matter what you pick, you will not be disappointed.
Much as I appreciate all the wall-of-sound layering, inevitably I will always choose simpler, over complex. One of the reasons I love Punk/Hardcore, is because of its simplicity (aside from the difficulty of playing that fast), and you can (usually) easily pick out bass vs guitar. Vulgar Display, released in 1992, was my introduction to Pantera. It was the third album with Phil on vocals, and the 6th album over all.
Check out some of the Pantera hair metal days they refused to talk about. To this day I have "Power Metal" and "I am the night" on vinyl. Thank god record players still exist.
I think "Hollow" is one of Vinnies most interesting grooves. Slow song but after 30 years I still can't play it tight. Deceptively difficult!!! Oh, and lyrically very heavy.
When someone looks up Groove Metal is the dictionary there should be a damn Pantera logo right next to it! 🤘 They were a force of nature live. Just crushing. My neck still hurts 24+ years later 😂
Pantera is life. They are from my area, so I saw them live over a dozen times. Dime and Vinnie are.pioneers of the metal community. There is still, to this day, no guitarist that can mimic Dimebag. @AndrewRooneyDrums Who knew that 90's Kiwi kids, and 90's kids from Iowa, in good ol' Merica, would've had sorta similar-ish adolescent experiences during our upbringing..🤨 Curious...🤔 Hahaha..
This is the song that blew the band up I think it was the 4th single from Vulgar Display Of Power If ZZ Top and Metallica had a baby it would be named Pantera haha ✌️🧐🤘😎
When slips into the half time groove, things get real heavy real quick Kind of reminds me of Tommy Aldridge, hard hitting and always the perfect fills. Not super flashy, but just right for the song. I'll take groove over flash every time.
This was cutting edge at the time. Even four piece bands would record rhythm guitar over the lead guitar part. It took a few minutes for everyone’s ears to adjust. Brilliant move by Pantera and it definitely set them apart from the pack.
I can't believe you've done this. No but seriously, more PANTERA. RIP V, RIP dimebag. ALSO, please do Dave Bland from full of hell. He is a god damn monster
Great callout on the lack of overdubbed guitars during the solo. This doesn't happen on every track on this album or the previous album but was a lot more frequent across the subsequent albums. Apparently this was inspired a lot by Van Halen, who Darrel (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums) and Darrell (guitar) were understandably big fans of as brothers like Eddie and Alex. Rex Brown is an under appreciated bassist and some of his grooves under the solos are among my all time favourites. Check out I'm Broken and 5 Minutes Alone
Pantera's "Becoming" please! It's got one of the coolest drum beats of all time I swear.
100% Yes - talk about groove with double bass.
Absolutely!
That one and also Slaughtered
I came to say this. Becoming yes. The double kick pattern at the end of the song is one of the coolest double kick grooves of all time.
I
Domination. Live in Russia 91! TOTAL EPIC!

Revolution is My Name!
And the full version with the sludgy intro!
I like this drumming. No fancy pants, no virtuosity, pure power and feeling.
This song rules!! I saw this live and dimebag stood on sheet of plywood being held up by the crowd during the solo.... god status!!
Oh awesome 🙌
'Floods' is a sonic trip. All the feels.
Primal concert sledge!
People have said it already but:
“Becoming”
“13 Steps”
“The Underground in America”
Vinnie definitely shines in these tracks!
I'd throw "Explode" from Damageplan in there, too. Concussive drumming from Vinnie Paul.
13 steps is legendary!
Primal concrete sledge too!
