Vinnie's go-to ride was a 22" Sabian HH Power Bell ride, for recordings he generally used thinner crashes; he also co-engineered & co-produced this album with Terry Date (legendary producer).
That kick drum groove has amazed me for 3 decades now! It’s SO GOOD! 🤩 Now a days this is quite common, but when this album dropped those kicks blew my hair off, popped my eyes out and I broke my jaw on the floor! And Vinnie, oh man, he had pockets for days in every size. Such a magnificent drummer! R.I.P. brothers❤
You're spot on that Far Beyond Driven was far beyond the previous albums in productions and mastering. This debut'd number 1 in BIllboard, which was a huge triumph for us metal fans. This is far and away, hehehe, my favorite album of theirs, amongst quite a few triumphs throughout the years.
And your nu-metal awareness is right too. Basically, nu-metal was created by a bunch of bands, inspired by a bunch of bands, with Pantera and Faith No More primarily. Nu-metal, whether theywant the parentage or not hahahah, is the child of those two bands beyond all others I believe.
Hell yes!!! Such an epic song and drum groove! 😍 I FINALLY learned how to play that some years ago although without the "double slap". I still lead on the left like Vinnie but I alternate every beat between my left and right foot. Still proud 😁
I just found Pantera like 5 hours ago, loved Becoming after listening to the discography, wanted to see a reaction and this popped up immediately. How convenient 🤔
Lucky mf! You've missed out on great music for so many years but damn do I envy people like you who get to hear pantera for the first time. Lol, good for you!
So many memories attached to Pantera. My first listen to them as a 14 year old boy in 1992 scared me a bit. It was waay heavier than anything else i was into at that time. It slowly but surely crept under my skin and it later shaped my view on metal. Sounds so powerful in 2024 too!
This was the first Pantera song I heard way back in my high school days in the 90s. I had just started learning drums and a friend of mine made me listen to it. I was blown away instantly by the kick pattern and I swore that Vinnie had 3 pedals lol. From that day on, Pantera was and will always be my favourite band, and Vinnie Paul is the reason I carried on drumming and still do. And to this day! - I can play every Pantera song.....but I STILL cant nail this one properly lol! The Master, the Monster - Vinnie Paul!!!
Saw their first show at Joe's Garage where I hung out then here in Ft Worth TX. They weren't even old enough to drink so we were all buying for them. Back then they were totally different and wore Kiss makeup and even in that first show had flash pods going off and this wasn't a big bar. Became the house band.
First saw them in '86 and watched as they developed their sound into what they finally wanted it to be. The two Abbott brothers were amazing together. RIP.
i love the attack on the production sound of the drums :) it's so sharp it sounds like the rest of the band is dragging oh so slightly... like a team of horses pulling a heavy wagon :D concerning the bass drop: 90s metal started adding a lot of production value in post, like adding sub bass or other electronic enhancements and ornamentations, for example fear factory, strapping young lad, korn, ministry, white zombie, marilyn manson, and all of their knockoffs... i'm guessing nine inch nails (trent reznor is kind of musicians' musician) pioneered and is kind of a linking of 80s electronic wave and goth and industrial (skinny puppy, alien sex fiend, sisters of mercy, etc...) with the 90s rock and metal, which had a popularity (grunge, groove metal, death metal, thrash, all of it...) bubble with a lot of money for production going around. then THE MATRIX hit the theaters and everybody started wearing leather trenchcoats and sun glasses... :D
There is a video here on yt titled Vinnie Paul- Pantera- Becoming double bass ....(it is an excerpt from one of the Pantera home videos released in the 1990's. They have 3 VHS documentary videos of their on tour and daily life shenanigans). The clip shows Vinnie practicing this very songs double bass lick from a footcam position back in the 90's. He is wearing what looks like white tennis shoes and playing the kick drums so heavy his feet come up off the pedals. Also seen are him using his old faithful Danmar wood bass drum pedal beaters and round danmar drumhead impact click pads. You can also see just how low Vinnie sits.He practically sits on the ground with his super low drum seat height. The clip is very short but watchable over and over. Vinnie triggered his drums but in the studio I think they used triggers plus a percentage mixture of mic'd his drums as well.
Gotta love the bass drum patterns and the sixteenth notes between the hi-hat & the ride in the choruses. All out of Vinnie and Dime's jams. At the 1994 Australian show I attended the band opened their set with this one.
I fell in love with this song when it first dropped. I was 13. you are right, this album felt more produced than the previous albums. brought a more fullness to the range. keep going down this rabbit hole. we're here for it. 🤘😎 ....next song? Floods(long version with extended outro)
Andrew that double kick pattern is one of his best works , starts on the left foot also! Vin had incredible groove and was an amazingly pocket heavy player. Vin used a Sabian hand hammered power bell ride also throughout his career! Monster ride for a monster player!
5:01 Man, Andrew I appreciate your authenticity as a musician, actually caring what the rhythm is or what the notes are and taking just 2 friggin seconds to find out. THAT'S what its all about, folks. And i think the bands would want us to know whats happening as opposed to jist simpky grooving out. Reason i say this is man, would you love tracks like Meshuggah's Stengah. You'd surely drool in a trance if you like to delve into those rhythms. I know, Patreon. One day, sir. Im behind on rent and lucky to have the internet lol
Gotta check out their cover of Black Sabbath’s Planet Caravan Also , Use My Third Arm Off this same album & 13 Steps To Nowhere from The Great Southern Trendkill 🤘
Wait until bro hears Strength Beyond Strength pocket. You know the one... The greatest pocket in the past, present and future of mankind even though it only lasts like 10 seconds.
Andrew! The high pitch sound on the guitar is made with the «whammy» pedal that Morrelo used all the time. It lets guitar zoom up though the octaves, or ads harmonies. This record came out when i was 16-17. means a lot to me.. actually makes me all teary-eyed and goosebumpy. Would love more Pantera reactions from you. Any song, they are all good..
i have yet to hear anyone else, even in this time, that could roll a double bass like Vinnie, this song proves it, especially towards the end of the track
Great video Andrew! Apologies in advance for my ramblings...I think their 3rd album "Far Beyond Driven" (and post) is where the band matured (and evolved) alot musically. They also became divided internally, primarily (as the story goes) due to Anselmo's antics (lead singer). One area they all agreed on was that every album should be harder and less mainstream. Which, to a teens ears at the time, was figurative (and literal?) music. Brothers, Vinnie Paul and Dimebag, are/were highly respected/loved by the industry (see eddie van halen dimebag story). Im sure youve heard the stories of Dimebag being banned from all guitar competitions because he won them all too many times lol. Pantera was dubbed "groove metal" back in the day (by the indusrty media). The leap from panteras sound to Korns was natural for me at the time (Korn flipped my wig as a 19yr old, i was immediately hooked). As for the "heaviness"...funny you mention. The songs that never got radio play 30yrs prior due to "heaviness" become so vanilla with time . They play pantera at 49er football games now, (i.e. family environments). Similar to Sabbath 25 yrs ago. 40 yrs ago Ozzy was viewed as a taboo satan worshiper in the US...lol media narratives🤦. By the late 90s sabbath music was used in US Christmas ads😂 and soon after (rapidly) became americas most lovable old fart, once they launched the iconic groundbreaking reality show "the Osbornes" Andrew Have you ever watched the documentary "Metal, a headbangers journy??"..i cant recommend this more highly. I found it riviting 20yrs ago. Kind of of a must see for fans of the genre. Upon googling dates, i just discoved The same guy made a follow up 11 part series documentary "Metal Evolution" 5yrs later which i havent seen (but am definitely about too). So, I obviously cant recommend that to you (uet). I do hope you start with the 2006 release if you decide to watch.
It's cool you picked up on the similarities between Dime and Morello. They both loved the Digitech Whammy pedal. Using it in completely different ways too. I always found Dime's playing to boil down to blues type riffs with incredible amounts of feeling that you don't hear often in metal. Pantera really took the torch and inspired generations of bands much like a metallica or sabbath. At a time when it wasn't popular to play heavy dynamic groove metal.
ZEST COAST: VINNIE used butt end of his signature sticks, and his own signature sabian over sized power bell. He uses triggers on his bass drums and snare, and his drum sizes are custom..14 by 8 inch signature snare drum..24 by 24 inch bass drums, 14 by 14 and 15 by 15 rack Tom's and 18 by 18 bass drums with DAN MAR BEATERS ON HIS BASS DRUMS, check out is signature kit by DDRUMS. He grew up in a country recording studio owned by his dad a country studio. With his brother darrel the guitarist. He co produced all pantera albums. 1989 thry hired phil to sing then by 91 became a solid metal band instead of glam
Vinnie used Danmar pads on his kick drums as part of the Pantera signature sound. Because you hear every hit so distinctly, they don't really leave any room for error. He was a precision percussion master, his playing was always on point, and he is possibly the most influential metal drummer from the 90's until today.
The song Slaughtered by Pantera has killer para-paradiddles at the end which is disgusting and brutal!!! You'd love it! The only band I know thats done it!
great sothern trendkill was my favorite . floods and 10s are great and 13 steps to nowhere just hits hard for sure vinny killed many snare heads on that one
I recommend Flood form their 4th album, it has a interesting bass line which I'm sure you'll love. And also drag the water also in thier 4th album, it has one of the best drum intros by vinnei
Just to add some context, the V2 of the digitech whammy guitar pedal came out a year or so before this album dropped, which is the device used to make that squawk sound. I'm pretty sure Tom Morello used that one too, so I think it's less that Dimebag or Tom were inspired by each other and just that each was experimenting with the same new piece of guitar hardware. Both are awesome!
@@ArcticonComp Cool, thanks for the extra info. I bought the V1, but upgraded to the V2 black one once it was released. Those were fun times in guitar pedal tech :)
@@ArtOfSoulburn my band mate had the V2 back then. He would've wanted to have the red one, but it wasn't available. Sound wise there really wasn't that big a difference between those or the red reissue V3. Those Digitech pedals were all really out there.
@@ArcticonComp I "feel" as though the sound of the black one sounded a little less processed and a little cleaner when jumping 2 full octaves, but I don't know, it could have been my imagination :) Either way, they were a ton of fun to use!
Andrew so glad you're diving into Pantera. It would be worthwhile to choose one of the albums and slowly go track by track like you did with Sabbath and Zeppelin. You will not regret it. Super heavy and sludgy with great grooves and riffs. Also please check out Domination live video from Moscow. It's so heavy it will break you.
Killers and Project in the jungle from Project in Jungle (1984) are great songs to react already by a drum perspective. Also over and out and power metal and much more from Power Metal( 1988) with Phil Anselmo first appeareance on that album
1-always sabian i believe 22” 2-thats just rex brown on the bass. 3-dime was one of one influenced many! 4-there sound evolved and got heavier as they toured and wrote new songs. 5-vinny was the master of drum groves locking down the pocket and production of all his drum sounds and parts! Get your pull on rip dime and vinny!
Can hardly wait for this one!! And I really think you should go down the Vinnie Paul rabbit hole!! Consume every beat, because there’s not one that is bad!! I never felt that Vinnie got the respect he deserved!! Polyrhythms in Pantera !?!🤯 R.I.P You brothers Abbott!!🤘
I'm glad you finally got a chance o listen to this song. The more you listen to Pantera / Vinnie Paul you're gonna fall in love. A good song that is more technical is "Primal Concrete Sledge" from the Cowboys From Hell video. The band did evolve a lot even before the Cowboys album.
Haha, the seed has been planted, now your Metalness is growing!! I'd love to see you isolate the drums and dissect each individual section.. then you'll see why he's called Vinnie Paul, "The Brick Wall.." R.I.P. Brother Vince... Cheers!!
Think you're correct with a lot of the comparisons, Andrew. Basically, the story of Pantera is that the Abbott brothers - Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell - were already acknowledged studio musicians and the three Pantera albums from the 80s were more in a glam / heavy metal style. I remember hearing the story of them once opening for Slayer and ending up close friends with their guitarist Kerry King, which resulted in Dimebag starting to take the anatomy of thrash metal riffs very seriously. The breakthrough of the Cowboys From Hell record dates to this period when they stomped the heaviness pedal a lot, and obviously you have Metallica and Slayer influences taking up more significance. But also, while at the time, the start of 90s, as thrash and death metal bands were chasing speed, as guys from the South (Texas, singer Phil from Louisiana) they instead went for the Sabbath-end of more bluesy, groovy and mid- or slow- tempo approach very core to their sound. Not like they couldn't play faster and don't have thrashier songs all across their catalogue, and arguably even employ elements of death metal. Now, I wouldn't say it's coming from the same spot as Korn and Rage Against the Machine, where you can arguably say that these were more influenced by rap and hip hop, but then, the rap and hip hop grooves also have some root in blues, so I would say that some of it took a central spot, although being transmitted through different channels - and as I wrote, against the backdrop of when lots of metal bands were competing who can get faster and shreddier, so instead going for a more groove oriented sound and a frequent use of less "melodic" vocab in the sense of guitar squeals and pinch harmonics, more percussive use of guitars and bass... was in that time a way how to become different and bring something new to the table and allow creativity and virtuosity to find its way out differently.
Domination Live is the most requested. So DOMINATION LIVE. It shows you them in their prime absolutely destroying. If someone asked me to play one song to define metal dominations the answer.
I don't know about all the references to Korn & Rage, but here's what I will say, every Pantera album just got heavier & heavier. That was a deliberate composition decision that Pantera made.
I think you're kind of on point with the timelines and analysis - all the 'nu metal' stuff came after/was influenced by Pantera and Rage (though nothing ever as good as those two imo). Most will say that the pre-Cowboys stuff doesn't really count as they were doing a 80s glam/hair metal thing before they found their true sound, and so the 'real' Pantera is the five albums ('90, '92, '94, '96, '00) which yes for the most part are progressively heavier, thicker, and groovier
Technically it’s power groove mental. But let’s face it. Pantera are one of the og of nu metal. There roots are firmly in glam rock which you’ll find out by listening to their earlier stuff.
Finally! Now do 'Davidian' by Machine Head for some seriously energetic drumming! The BD pattern in this is R-L-RR-L-R-L-RR-L-R-L-RR-L. But I think Vinnie led with the left, so it's L-L-RR-L-R-L-RR-L-R-L-RR-L. Alternating ride and hi-hat together in the chorus. The guitar squeal, live, was done by a roadie off to the side of the stage with a pedal.
My mama got a backstage pass and got kissed on the hand by Phil back in Nov of 96’. I got to see Pantera for free in Feb this year (2024) and got to see my fav band with my wife. Incredible experience. Rip Vinnie and Dime ❤️ ps I have the backstage pass in a frame on my wall

Vinnie used to sit at the bar during the breaks and chat with us fans. He was more generous than he ever needed to be.

THIS ALBUM IS 30 YEARS OLD...

That’s wild, this is heavy by today’s standards. This must’ve blown your mind at 15 😂
Kicked Micheal Jackson out of the number one spot. The trend is fucking over.
Me too! I was 15 also when I was counting the days until this album was released. They were the 1st metal band to have an album debut at #1

Go watch some of the live hand held camera footage of them in the 90s. Vinnies kits sounded elite livr.
Looking forward to it
Vinnie was so sophisticated drummer, produced tastier and havier fills ever... One of my favorite drummer!!! Andrew, you´re Vinnie´s now LoL!!!
Pantera paved the way for 90s metal bands.
The song Slaughtered by Pantera has killer para-paradiddles at the end which is disgusting and brutal!!! You'd love it! The only band I know thats done it!
Vinnie was a power master. This is one of my favorites for them and I loved trying to play it on the drums. I would get close but...
great sothern trendkill was my favorite . floods and 10s are great and 13 steps to nowhere just hits hard for sure vinny killed many snare heads on that one
My favorite Pantera track!
I recommend Flood form their 4th album, it has a interesting bass line which I'm sure you'll love. And also drag the water also in thier 4th album, it has one of the best drum intros by vinnei
HELLYES!!!!!
🤘
Pantera, Korn & RATM are probably my 3 favourite bands of all time!
I love all the "That's what she said"
Just to add some context, the V2 of the digitech whammy guitar pedal came out a year or so before this album dropped, which is the device used to make that squawk sound. I'm pretty sure Tom Morello used that one too, so I think it's less that Dimebag or Tom were inspired by each other and just that each was experimenting with the same new piece of guitar hardware. Both are awesome!
There’s also 2 in use here. For live shows his tech controlled one.
Morello used V1 Digitech Whammy. V2 was the black one. Otherwise exactly this!
1-always sabian i believe 22”
2-thats just rex brown on the bass.
3-dime was one of one influenced many!
4-there sound evolved and got heavier as they toured and wrote new songs.
5-vinny was the master of drum groves locking down the pocket and production of all his drum sounds and parts!
Get your pull on rip dime and vinny!
Domination off of cowboys from hell is a banger, and you should check out the live version from moscow in ‘91 as well!
Kick drumming is in the Meshuggah zone
Can hardly wait for this one!!
And I really think you should go down the Vinnie Paul rabbit hole!! Consume every beat, because there’s not one that is bad!!
I never felt that Vinnie got the respect he deserved!!
Polyrhythms in Pantera !?!🤯
R.I.P
You brothers Abbott!!🤘
Lovin' Pantera!
Cheers!!
Pantera is just the best! You should check out Heresy, killer riff and drums!
Love it! Andrew you should totally give us a cover of Pantera’s song 10’s! Not terribly difficult at all but so fun and tasty 🔥
Early 90’s .Magic
Dimebag was one of a kind, no need to copy, borrow, he was his own genius
Hard lines sunken cheeks
Slaughtered
Revolution is my name should be your next! 🤟
Pantera - Yesterday don't Mean Sh*t
Domination Live is the most requested.
So DOMINATION LIVE.
It shows you them in their prime absolutely destroying.
If someone asked me to play one song to define metal dominations the answer.
Pantera where a glam metal band in the 80's wasn't until CFH they started changing there sound to what we know today
I don't know about all the references to Korn & Rage, but here's what I will say, every Pantera album just got heavier & heavier. That was a deliberate composition decision that Pantera made.
Nice! 🤘
I think you're kind of on point with the timelines and analysis - all the 'nu metal' stuff came after/was influenced by Pantera and Rage (though nothing ever as good as those two imo).
Most will say that the pre-Cowboys stuff doesn't really count as they were doing a 80s glam/hair metal thing before they found their true sound,
and so the 'real' Pantera is the five albums ('90, '92, '94, '96, '00) which yes for the most part are progressively heavier, thicker, and groovier
And that’s okay to find your sound too! 🤘
Oh my goodness yes👏🏻
CLASSIC!
Vince used a Sabian HH power bell ride 'edit 24 inch'
Technically it’s power groove mental. But let’s face it. Pantera are one of the og of nu metal. There roots are firmly in glam rock which you’ll find out by listening to their earlier stuff.
anyone else notice the silence while he was watching it the first time?
Even Charlie Benante struggled with the double-bass on this one!
If you want to see the Metallica influence, checkbout Pantera covering "No Remorse" in 1987. It freakin kicks.
Please do "FLOODS" from Great Southern Trendkill
You need to listen to The Great Southern Trendkill.
Now you gotta hear "5 Minutes Alone" same album, same sound, only more punchier slower beat
Can’t wait 🤘
Pantera - Mouth For War
My mama got a backstage pass and got kissed on the hand by Phil back in Nov of 96’. I got to see Pantera for free in Feb this year (2024) and got to see my fav band with my wife. Incredible experience. Rip Vinnie and Dime ❤️ ps I have the backstage pass in a frame on my wall
Dimebag did for metal what Eddie did for metal, giving it another approach to the instrument and influencing guitar players.
