      Reus was wrong, the real reason of Trucy not seeing his tricks wasn't rookie-ness, it was her perspective towards magic. different perspective makes you see or not see different things in different way.
      Edit: I have a short point to add in this: Trucy didn't notice it because she didn't think anyone would use magic in such mischievous and evil ways, she thinks magic is to make people smile, to entertain, not for evil tricks, just as @jay7022 said

    What impressed me of this guy, aside from how terrifyingly perfect his plan was in theory, is that the charismatic masterminds were always people we didn't easily suspect, otherwise we'd have plain punchable brats that just screamed to be put down. This is the first guy that we knew was guilty as cliche saturday villains get, but even so became more imposing and oddly admirable when the mask of greed fell and exposed a deep, lifelong hatred.

      @ogy A bit, first impression of Furio could have been that the guy was an exagerate poser, but did turn out to be a ruthless mafia boss. However he never feigned anything and it was never more than business to him. What I mean is that Reus feigned greed to hide his hate, the motive here being something that by extension would uncover his background and his real capabilities when it came to commiting the murder.

    Does anyone else think Reus and 6-2 as a whole could have EASILY made for an interesting final case for Apollo with some tweaking? Between Trucy's emotional breakdown, heavy ties to the Gramaryes, the eviction conflict, and Phoenix passing the torch to Apollo, theres some REALLY good final case worthy tension to be had. And with the sheer popularity and media power Roger Retinz has he still has that threat of 'a foe more powerful than you.'
    Heck, since this case has heavy ties with the Gramaryes they could have FINLLY tied up that thalassa plotline too with her helping with the show only for Reus to realize who she is and try and drag her down with Trucy somehow. Plus bringing him down could be even more satisfying as when he clings to him outtricking a Gramarye, Thalassa/Apollo (if he found out b4) could rip his last bit of ego to shreds by revealing that Apollo, a Gramarye, was the one who revealed all of Reus' tricks and gimmicks for everyone to see.

    • @Teknanam
      @Teknanam 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      I wonder if Reus would consider Apollo a true Gramarye though. Apollo is Magnifi's grandson, but he's no magician carrying on the Gramarye legacy like Trucy. A boy who embodies the Sahdmahdis more than he embodies the Gramaryes. I could see Reus keeping his ego safe by just not considering Apollo a true Gramarye regardless of his blood. Trucy wasn't targeted because of her blood relation. Its because she inherited the rights to Magnifi's magic and wanted to do him proud.
      Zak Gramarye has no blood relation to Magnifi, but I bet if he had tried to make a magical comeback before he gave the rights to Trucy, Reus would want to ruin him too. But Apollo? He's just a lawyer who never even knew his ex-magician mother when growing up.

    • @darksoul1004
      @darksoul1004 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@Teknanam Honestly, I think Reus would be even more distraught about Apollo, Magnifi Gramarye's Grandson who doesn't know anything about performing Magic, actually seeking through his tricks! A Magician having his tricks be seen through by someone not familiar with how said tricks are performed normally is embarrassing for normal Magician's, but it would have been a living hell foe Mr. Reus, especially since Apollo is related to his enemies by blood!

    He used a fan, someone who greatly admired him for his petty revenge. Sure, the Gramaryes are no saints, but damn, he's a complete sociopath with no soul for that. He even tried to frame an innocent young lady that he hated simply because she was born into the lineage. He even used two girls as his accomplices without them knowing. This theme reflects how he feels superior to the Gramaryes, and also hateful towards them. It has also a tone of evil to it, reflecting his black heart. His Ratings Rajah persona is very well-crafted. His ability to completely masquerade his true intentions makes him all the more dangerous. Even if he is a magician, it takes more than magical experience to do what he did. He was really able to do it because he simply had no regard for anyone but himself, his ego, and his revenge. I think he is one of the most deserving Ace Attorney villains to end up behind bars.

      @@pkmntrainerred4247 It's crazy that Roger Retinz would throw away his only chance at leaving behind a legacy simply because he could not overcome a trivial and irrational grudge for simply being kicked out of Troupe Gramarye for being reckless and performing with an injury against the troupe leader's orders. There were so many more constructive methods he could have taken to right the wrongs of his past. He could have had his fan, who took up his mantle, begin to form a new magician troupe that would outclass and put the old troupe to shame - a legal method to get revenge on those long since passed. (Although, I do wonder if Trucy would join such a group or if Roger would be against the idea since he would still be in control due to his mentorship of Manov Mistree).

      I think how much I hate Trucy's dad, despite the game barely ever pointing out how much of a piece of shit he is at all really helped me sympathise with Reus, and appreciate his plan. Although we don't see much of Magnifi, it is probably a pretty logical assumption than he had a lot in common with Trucy's dad.

      @Scrummy64 8 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Absolutely! The entirety of Troupe Gramarye (with the exception of Thalassa) were a bunch of Grade-A a**holes so it doesn't come as a surprise that Retinz despises them to the depth of his soul.
      Of course, the point where he goes wrong is when he decides to target Trucy, who bears no resemblance in personality to her predecessors, just to spit on Magnifi's grave.

      I should probably play Apollo Justice again, after I beat Spirit of Justice.
      I remember finding Trucy's dad particularly despicable, because of how he didn't seem to see anything wrong with abandoning his daughter and destroying Phoenix's career, just to pull off some magic trick for the sake of stroking his own ego, but I don't remember much about the others being bad.
      Even though Retinz was pretty evil himself, he was still a character I could sympathise with though. Murdering his own fan, and trying to frame Trucy for her grandfather's decision was atrocious behaviour, but I found it all easier to stomach, because of how the story clearly paints him as a villain, unlike the rest of the troupe.

    • @Scrummy64
      @Scrummy64 8 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Well personally I would've said Zak (Trucy's dad) was the better of the three men.
      Granted, he DID pretty much abandon Trucy, but even if he hadn't, he would've ended up in prison for a murder he didn't commit. The destruction of Phoenix's career was no fault of Zak's; it was set up by the vindictive Kristoph Gavin after Zak trashed him in Phoenix's favour.
      Magnifi was a real piece of s**t who faked his own daughter's death just to use it as leverage to control his two apprentices (who both believed they were responsible), while Valant was effectively living in Zak's shadow to the point where he tried to have him imprisoned for Magnifi's "murder" in order to push himself up the ladder.
      Zak was still an a**hole, but the main reason he did the things he did was because of the amount of crap Magnifi and Valant threw his way.

    Out of all the non-overarching villains in Ace Attorney, Mr. Reus easily is one of the most evil, if not the most.
    Holding a petty grudge for over a decade, leading to a revenge plot where he had an innocent fan killed for no other reason than to frame and to tarnish the name of the last descendant of the magicians he hated, an innocent and kind hearted girl who was willing and eager to give him a new chance on the stage.
    On top of that, he got two other innocent girls to be unwitting accomplices to his murder scheme, and also planned to completely destroy the lives of Trucy's friends and her new father.
    And to top it off, once he's caught his only reaction is a twisted sense of victory from Trucy never seeing through his illusions, not realizing that another descendant of the Gramaryes was the one to undo his scheme in front of everyone. What a complete and total piece of work.

    Man, imagine being Manov Mistree here. There's not too much to say, so I get why hardly anyone mentions him when talking about this case, but this dude has one of the saddest deaths in the series; not in terms of its impact on others, but purely because of the impact it has on him. We don't ever meet him or get much of anything about him, really, outside of his love of magic and Mr. Reus, so there isn't much character to interpret or analyze. Still, I think it's fair to say that the reasoning behind his death has some level of universal appeal that makes his unfortunate end that much worse: after all, they say never meet your heroes. His only mistake was liking the wrong guy, a mistake that got him killed.
    A lot of people got screwed over by Mr. Reus in the end, but Manov Mistree got the shortest end of the stick despite being the person Reus should have been the most appreciative towards. It says a lot about a man who would willingly kill perhaps the one person in the world who recognized and appreciated him in order to get one over on a dead guy, but other people have talked about that in more detail (and far better) than I could. I just want to draw more attention to Manov Mistree, who - in my opinion - deserves to be talked about more often when people explain why they like this case so much.

    I like how Retinz’s magician design was modeled after the Joker in a deck of cards.
    After all, the card(s) is usually not used, and it’s not useful to the deck at all unless it needs to fill in for another card, which in turn makes it a wild card; a card that can represent any other card in the deck. (Which could reference how Retinz’s magic is proven/stated to be greater than Trucy’s.)
    It’s also said that the Joker can be the most beneficial or harmful card in the game. I feel as if Retinz could have been useful to Troupe Gramarye, (considering his skill) if it weren’t for his arrogance and desire to be in the spotlight without consideration for others. (Then again, maybe Magnifi could have done something besides firing him, but I’m not entirely sure.)
    Instead, though, he was harmful to the Troupe/Trucy/the Wright Anything Agency. And then, he could only be beaten (as a wild card) by another card in the game that he’d had no idea about: Apollo, who you could call another wild card, seeing as his worth as a Gramarye was never realized. (Also, to top it off, Retinz didn’t predict another Gramarye would beat him; he doesn’t even know it happened.)
    Also, to add to the wild card Apollo thing: a colored/RED joker normally outranks the black joker, so that probably means the colored joker would beat the black joker.

    If you ask me, Roger Retinz is one the best villains this series has to offer. He’s probably up there in the top 10 for me. He isn’t really layered or deep like some other villains, but that doesn’t really matter. Sometimes all you need as a completely hateable slimeball to be a good villain, and Roger is not only a dick with capital D, but he even manages to raise the stakes pretty high, threatening to repossess the Wright Anything Agency and all that. Out of all the villains in this series, Roger is the biggest one that I absolutely LOVE to LOATHE. I wouldn’t change a thing about him.

    SPOILERS:
    The beauty of this villain is the fact that you think the game will repeat Dual Destinies 2nd case with a comically over-the-top campy villain. Not that there is anything wrong with that, in fact I liked Florent, but it felt like Retinz was going to be another Florent.
    Then, after his little camera trick in the court lobby, you say to yourself, "Oh, so that's why he hates the Gamaryes, because maybe he was a magician, at one point in his career, and his magic wasn't good enough to keep ratings high for one of his produced shows. Therefore, he had to switch to trashy reality shows to compete. I guess we will see this 'raja' transform into a magician closer to the end of the case."
    It was somewhat misleading though, the game leads you to believe that you have the case figured out, like you weren't supposed to piece it together with that little stunt in the court lobby, and you are ahead of the case, but the developers smack you across the face with the revelation, that Reus isn't dead, and say "never doubt our writing ever again."
    Plus, even after the twist, he was a great villain with a tragic breakdown, tragic past, all wrapped up with a somewhat tragic theme. Well done, Spirit of Justice.

      Justice for All. It has, in my opinion, the weakest line up of cases, aside from the Finale. The starting case is rather shallow and poor, with a rather silly contrivance to give you a tutorial (amnesia? Really?), with a really poor villain.
      Case 2: Not the worst, but I did not like this case very much, outside of Pearly and Morgan. It feels somewhat rushed as a case and it probably would of suited more as a built up final case.
      Case 3: I do not speak of Big Top...Big Top is just Horrible. The investigation is boring and dull, none of the characters are likeable or enjoyable, outside of Franziska being Franziska. Acro is a horrible villain.
      Case 4: I'll be honest, this is the only reason I replay JFA. A wonderful case. Great villain, a nice reversal of you Losing and Defending the guilty party, Edgeworths return, solid investigation and trail sections.
      But that's it. None of them are horrible. Just JFA is the worst of the bunch.

I'm not saying Dual Destinies is pure grimdark, but i'd say it's Darker than any of the DS games.

      A courtroom was Blown up by a time bomb, and a woman was murdered by a corrupt Bomb squad member who SOLD BOMBS on the black market, possibly acting as a supplier for TERRORISTS AND WAR CRIMINALS.
      Damian Tenma was being blackmailed by his aide to merge with another town so he could get access to said town's treasure and pay off his debts, or else his daughter would be harmed, and the alderman of the other town was murdered for opposing said merger.
      Constance Courte was murdered because she tried to confront a colleague for accepting bribes and being corrupt.
      A Space shuttle was Sabotaged, Clay Terran was murdered, and Solomon Starbuck was given severe PTSD and a crippling fear of space, all thanks to a Cold-blooded, emotionless spy.
      Athena Cykes' mother was murdered for trying to do a psychological profile on the aforementioned spy, Simon Blackquill was put on death row for it, and Athena ended up thinking that SHE was responsible, and having a mental breakdown.

    I remember that the first thing that threw me off about Mr. Reus wasn't him looking the same as thirteen years ago, as there are many characters in Ace Attorney who didn't age accordingly either (for example, in AJ, Lamiroir also looked too young for her age). It was rather his overall features. You can see it most clearly when you compare the Reus in the Gramarye poster to the one in the poster for Trucy's show. At least to me, there seemed to be something in his features on the Gramarye poster that made him look slightly evil and arrogant, particularly the area around his eyes and his grin. In the poster for Trucy's show though, those same features were drawn much softer, his smile was much more gentle and to me, his entire expression also looked way more shy than the one he wore in the old poster. It's also visible in the mugshot and the video of him we get later on. They just didn't seem to look the same as the one on the Gramarye poster.
    I might be the only one who sees that, though? Maybe I'm really just imagining it, I don't know. But I remember that that very slight difference between the two irritated me throughout the entire investigation and trial. It wasn't enough for me to get the idea that they were two different persons though. I just thought that maybe, Mr. Reus had been traumatized by his accident and his ousting by Magnifi, and that that was the reason why he was now being more subdued and less arrogant in his postures.

    • @kyuubinaruto17
      @kyuubinaruto17 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Speaking of things that irritated throughout the trial, why does no one bring up the obvious problem with the idea that Trucy stabbed Reus in the coffin? Blood.
      If you were to stab someone with a blade and then pull the blade out there should be a pool of blood around the victim. Instead there's only a little bit of blood on the hole through which Trucy would have stabbed him. He's in a tiny little coffin. There's nowhere else for the blood to go except on the floor of it. Yet there's absolutely no blood splatter around the site of the coffin.

And tried to punish her friends for being her friends with an over-encumbered debt that she unwittingly signed. I knew I was going to enjoy tearing him to shreds in the court.
    But the moment you reveal who he is, an instant change and he was a completely different person, serious, dark, giving off a powerful vibe, true villain material. But still the same man you immediately grew to hate, but know he felt more like a threat. Even though I hated him, I couldn't deny how much of a badass he turned into the moment he revealed his true colours.

    It's fitting that Reus represent the Joker of the Gramarye suit convention... both in the fact that it's a card that is inexorably linked to one of the most iconic villains of all time, and in the fact that it's the suitless card of the standard deck that commonly is exculded and unneeded.

      It's also known as the _wild card_ which probably explains why Magnifi, rampet perfectionist that he was, decided to kick him out of the troupe after one mistake out of fear of reputational ruin and explains Mr. Rues arrogance and bloody mindedness towards Troupe Gramarye in general.

    SPOILERS.
    I'm going to just say it. Roger Retinz is one of the most evil killers and people in the entire series. He wasn't interested in killing for Power, Money, or anything of the sort. He had plenty of money with his tv show. He literally just wanted revenge on everyone associated to Troupe Gramarye, including someone who was just a child and respected him when she got older. He used a fan of his, someone who respected him to just take down Trucy and killed him, and showed no remorse whatsoever, and also wanted to take down anyone that was with Trucy along with her. He is just full of hate and revenge, and this theme captures that perfectly imo.

    Here's my insight on the culprit from this case (SPOILERS):
    It all started when Magnifi kicked Mr Reus, Roger Retinz, out of the troupe. It seemed like the main reason was because he disobeyed Magnifi and got himself injured. But that wasn't the true reason why Magnifi kicked him out. The real reason was that Retinz had NO passion for magic.
    Now I think we can all agree on something; YES, Magnifi is NOT a pleasant person. He did TERRIBLE things. But if there's one thing I can safely say is that Magnifi was passionate for magic. The problem with Magnifi is, from my point of view, that over time his passion became overly passionate and it started to spread to the rest of the troupe and all of their worst traits started to show up and the trust between each other was starting to dry up. With all that said; Magnifi clearly saw that Retinz had no passion for magic to begin with. Retinz claimed that he dreamed to become a magician, but that's nothing more then a lie to himself. Retinz's dream is to just be the center of attention even if it means doing reckless stuff that the passionate magicians against. Because Retinz cared more about himself then magic and entertaining people. Again, not justifying Magnifi and the other members of the troupe (Mostly Zak), but Magnifi was in the right to fire Retinz for his narcissism.
    After that Retinz went on to become the famous producer, the Ratings Rajah, where he got to do what he wanted for all his life: Be the center of attention. There he did stuff like having him go to restaurants and try out their food. He was successful as seen throughout the case as Nahyuta had to wait in line for an entire hour just to try some of the food in the restaurant and had many fans.
    But despite all of that Retinz pride was too fragile. He hated the Gramarye for booting him out from the troupe. It was originally his dream to be the center of attention as a magician and not on television. So even though Retinz got the center of attention that he wanted it wasn't in the way he WANTED it to be. And so he spent a good decade planning to destroy the Gramarye for "ruining" him.
    Problem was that in the later years is that Magnifi committed suicide, Zak was murdered, Valant went to prison, and Thalassa was missing (And retired from magic) so there was no way he could take his revenge on them. At least directly. After all, Zak and Thalassa had a daughter who also happens to be Magnifi's granddaughter. So because she was blood related to them he decided to put his revenge on her.
    2 years before the case he ran into Manov Mistree who was was a fan of Mr Reus (And probably the only one seeing as how Mr Reus has became obscured at that time). It was at that point that Retinz decided to "take" Manov under his wing and teach him all of his tricks. But all of that was nothing more then him using Manov as his pawn as he most likely had started thinking about killing Manov and putting his death on Trucy. After all, Retinz doesn't trust anybody except himself.
    We all know what happened next; He manipulated everybody around him. Manov, the twins, and Trucy to get his revenge. He took Manov's life away, almost ruined Trucy, and almost made Apollo, Athena, and Phoenix lose their office. All because he held a petty grudge against a troupe that died out. And the worst part is that he could have had a happy life after leaving the troupe. He became famous and became the center of attention that he wanted. And Manov becoming his successor could have been another form of his revenge just by having Manov continue to be Mr Reus and keeping the Mr Reus name alive while the Gramarye name is dead. Sure, Trucy is planning on bringing it back to life, but he's a famous producer now. He could make Manov an internationally famous magician while Trucy could just be a small name magician. There was literally NO need to get revenge on them.
    I look back at his Mr Reus design and can't help but feel how it sums up Retinz very well. He only has half a mask over his face. It could mean that Mr Reus is two-faced. And that what Retinz is; Two-faced. And seeing the Mr Reus mask burn up in his breakdown is also a perfectly good metaphor for how his petty grudge killed the name of Mr Reus forever.
    To sum him up; Retinz is a magician without the heart of a magician and cares only himself. He didn't make the perfect illusion. He IS the illusion. It's pathetic really.

    • @kyuubinaruto17
      @kyuubinaruto17 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree with almost everything, but I wouldn't say he had NO passion for magic. His magic may be a means to an end to get attention, but I don't think skills like his just come about naturally. It feels like it's something you'd have to work towards. If one just wanted attention there's plenty of simpler ways to get it.
      Even years and years after getting kicked out he still retained those skills, and even spent two years training someone else to learn all his techniques.
      I'd say the issue wasn't a lack of passion, but caring more for the fame of the position rather than the magic itself. Like, the results of his magic are for his own gratification, not the amusement of the audience.

    • @hypemachina8926
      @hypemachina8926 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He actually said that all he ever wanted as a child was to be a great magician, so I would say he had a passion. I think Apollo says it best, about him having no regard for human life, his or others.

      Spoilers for AJ Case 1 below:
      Killing Zak was literally the only good thing Kristoph did, even if that was also in revenge, for Zak saying Kristoph couldn’t be Zak’s attorney because he was bad at poker.
      But the upside to Kristoph smashing Zak’s head in with Barok van Zieks’ wine bottle is that this guy couldn’t take revenge on Zak.
      Still doesn’t make Reus at all sympathetic though. Completely unforgivable as to what he did.

    There absolutely needs to be a scene in a future AA game where, once Apollo learns the truth about Trucy, Thalass and himself, he rubs it in Roger’s face that he is the son of Thalassa, and as such a Gramarye did defeat him. His supposed “victory” was a farce

      Well, Zak may not be a killer, but I think he's about as bad as Roger for basically betraying his own daughter out of pride. He abandoned her, forcing Phoenix to adopt her, then comes back 7 years later to ruin Phoenix's reputation on a false charge because Phoenix was using her talent to help with his job. The same job which was feeding and keeping his child in a stable home.
      While he was trying to secure her magical future of being his sucessor, he still basically was going to kill her financial future for his own ends, making him a pretty shit-tier dad.
