When a person has dementia they don't have any mental control or ability to know that assault is wrong as well as possibly deadly.

I retired for health reasons from my job in an Emergency Dept of 25yrs and now I'm working harder than i ever did in my life caring for my parents. My dad is 89 and my mom is 92 I do absolutely everything for them, all the shopping, meals, laundry, cleaning, make appointments, take them to their appointments. My mom has dementia so baths, dressing, makeup, haircuts. I will continue to do this for as long as I can. I pray for the strength to continue to do so.
God will give you the graces you need. 🙏🙏

In the US my mother went to a "rehabilitation home" after a major stroke. The day she arrived, they were trying to make her get up. ( mind you after this her neurologist found she wouldn't ever be able to walk, she's in a wheel chair and can't even balance herself sitting up). My mother still was trying to talk as clearly as she could, & was telling staff, "I can't, I can't" the staff told her she was being lazy & made her sit in a wheelchair at their desk for over 24 hours. All she could do was cry & ask to go to bed & was told to stop being a baby & when she did what she was told then they would bring her to bed. My brother went to check on her & seen her at the desk in that chair crying. It took her time, but she managed to tell him something & begged for help. We were so heart broken. My brother called our father & asked what he should do. My father told him to get her tf out of there. They tried to tell my brother he couldn't take her. He wheeled her out to the car, picked her up, strapped her in, reclined the seat a little & drove her out. She was already being abused the 1st day. Some of these ppl are sick.

Yes, it's always been a crisis. My grandmother worked as a nurse in elderly facilities from the 1940's to the 1960's. She told stories of the most abusive nightmares you can imagine that she witnessed working as a nurse. And she always made it clear that she didn't ever want to be put in a nursing home. She feared that more than anything.

The 1940s and 50s were different time you had war and rationing.. and back then people do not live long like they do today..

The problem with that (not saying you won't have a solution for) is the constant need of care as old people don't have a concept of time, so they might wake up at all hours of the day and night. You have to make sure that they are not going to hurt themselves but if they do, a quick response if there. You will have to literally baby them from time to time. Then all the hours of having to do that nonstop. And if they develop certain conditions, you will need to be trained on how to handle them. It can and does drain a person.
Then of course, the added costs of them living there.
Not just underpaid, but under trained, not properly vetted, not enough staff... basically greedy abuse of the ones that manage these places

@Echo 9970 I'm not sure what homes you're referring to but in PA there is a state police background check and an FBI check for all staff working with the elderly, including dietary. If you have a felony you cannot work in ANY care home or provide in home care. I am a CNA and I took a training course to have the title I have. A lot of education went into that and in addition to that I've received on the job training as well. In homes there is the problem of low staffing and that definitely needs to change.

I looked after my elderly mother who had dementia. Were it not for me, she would've been sent to a nursing home. She was in her own home till the day she died. I'd happily do it all over again. After all the sacrifices she made for us, it was the least I could do.

I'm living in a place right now that's 40-1 during the day and 60-1 at night. No joke.
I worked in a memory care where one caregiver, was assigned to care for 12 residence per shift, more if another resident wonders into your area. It gets hard when other workers disappears from their floor, sometimes for hours. Visiting families would be upset wanting this and that, end up to leave your floor and assigned residence to help families where worker is missing. It happens a lot in these facilities. That's when work gets hard. Maybe you need help to move a patient and none of other workers do not to help are totally ignore you when asking. (Illegals). Mgmt siding with the lazy and abusive workers, they lie and partners in crime defends each other. Pays are low and sometimes expected to give up your life and be waiting by a phone at the request of facilities.

As a 40 year old without children this terrifies me every day. That this is my future. Especially since Alzheimers runs in my family. Y'all have no idea the fear.

I was very suicidal as a child and staying in an in-patient hospital that had kids aged 10-16. A lot of people there were very mean to us, completely ignoring the fact that we were all mentally unstable CHILDREN. With that said I cant imagine what happens to these ELDERLY people. ugh, watching this made me sick!
I worked in nursing homes for years and saw all sorts of residents treated poorly and that was in the 80s+90s... so sad that a person could treat a helpless elder this way...breaks my heart
They need to install cameras in all the bedrooms, with family permission of course.

This is why " I will NEVER put my Parents or any family member in a Nursing home"! They do NOT treat them very well at all. These poor Old ppl do NOT deserve 2b treated this way!!
Hospitals are much the same, 12 hour shifts, and short staff forget about a shower for someone who is disabled. One Toronto Hospital, even misplaced my brothers clothing, jeans and windbreaker. I believe stolen, I got staff to check the floor transferred from, called on a couple of occasions, even checked out the lost and found. Nope, nothing found! I spoke to some people, and they said missing clothing was common at that hospital.

This is happing now. My daughter works in a home and crys about how the patients are treated under staffed even before the covid hit
As a nurse I've had several residents that were placed in the nursing home by Adult Protective Services because their family had abused and neglected them
Why are places ever notified beforehand that they're getting an inspection? They should have NO time to prepare! All inspections should be a surprise!
Quite often, facilities PAY the inspectors a bribe to call them a few days ahead of an inspection. It's so crooked.
My son was an inspector, and that is simple not true!

When I graduated from nursing school my first job was at a nursing home and I quit after two weeks . I urge people to NEVER put your loved ones in LTC facilities. A lot of nurses, aids and doctors don’t care and facilities are so short staffed . I’ve witnessed so much neglect it’s ridiculous!
I agree with you I work in one that also does rehab some of the things that I see is enough to make one person cry it’s that bad there!

My mother took care of her grandmother (my great-grandmother) at home for this very reason. She hired a caretaker to come to the house and look after her while she was at work and then when she came home she'd take over. I was around 6~8 years old during this time. I helped sometimes too, by helping my great-grandma get dressed or putting her favorite tv show on. She was well taken care of until she passed away. I will do the same for my mother when she gets up in age.

I worked in nursing home and bath time was the thing residents hated the most. I saw how they were rushed in the shower chair. Left exposed to cold with wet skin. Just a humiliating experience. I saw what was happening and I took a different approach. Of course I was met with resistance about shower time. What I did is put myself in their position and how I would like to be treated. I gathered more towels than normal. Id start on their head, neck back , chest...wash rinse then I would drape them with a warm large towel to privacy and to keep them warm. Then continue to the lower part of the body. Then did the same when putting on lotion or whatever. Each time I bathed a resident they were happy and said your can bathe me anytime. I was glad I could turn bath time in a good relaxing experience for them.

The patient did not grow up with showers. They are afraid of the hard water. A sponge bath is enough every 2 days unless incontinent.

We should treat everyone with respect and teach our children to do the same. Our children will be the ones taking care of our parents and us.
So many parents don't parent anymore or lead by example. Just look around when a funeral procession goes by. The respectful thing to do is pull over and wait until they have all gone past. The older folks do it but most of the younger ones don't. If they can't take a few minutes to show respect for people who are having that bad of a day I doubt they show respect to anyone.
When I see this film, it has been 5 years since it was posted on TH-cam. Wondering how it is at these long-term care facilities today.
As a former CNA the facilities that I worked at we were understaffed 10 months out of the year. The month we were adequately staffed was the month the state surveyor was due to walk through.
I will never let my parents go to a nursing home
Many people think this. But sometimes people end up needing professional medical care around the clock. Even something as trivial as IV medications long term may require someone to be there because Medicare doesn't pay for IV meds administration at home. This is silly, they kept my late mother in a very expensive hospital for 3 weeks when she needed antibiotics. They wanted to discharge her home and have a visiting nurse come and administer medications which is a whole lot cheaper than the hospital, but Medicare doesn't pay for it, so they paid more for the hospital. Or they can become bed bound - unable to get up and needing a special bed and be turned several times a day to avoid bed sores. Dementia is a special hell on earth. Initially, it's doable - I've been caring for my father with Alzheimer's for 2 years now, but at some point they can become a danger to themselves and you.
I used to say that, till I blew out 3 discs in my neck. Had to have a steel plate put in, to hold everything together. Took a year before I was able to lift more than 20 lbs. Still can't lift 40. Never will be able to again. So if I can't lift her, shall I let her lay there? How is that better than a nursing home? If you have no choice, put them there, then spend your days there with them. Let the staff take care of their major needs, and you take care of the little things.

Yep. A couple times a week, a "caregiver" would stop by, (paid by medicare and her supplemental) and check her vitals. Otherwise, I'd have had to lose the shelter over our heads, to pay for an agency. You gotta be filthy stinking rich to afford even part time care. I tried to find any means to get help. It wasn't there.

Low wages is no excuse for abuse, we have choices.
Most people I knew chose the field because the wages are not low, in a union they could not be fired, and there are lots of jobs.
Well if you pay a higher for people with more experienced, like nannies, maids, etc you would more likely get a better caregiver. And homecare is 10x better according to so clients.
There is no excuse to pay low wages that lead to health problems and disability. Neglecting caregivers with substandard means for a healthy and happy life and pretending that it has nothing to do with the abuse is like saying the reduction of antipsychotics had nothing to do with the incidence of abuse.
Its just like the illegal immigration phenomenon... you pay a living wage and people will do the labor done by immigrants.

Im a nursing home caregiver, a cna, yes I’ve def lost my cool in my head, but I don’t hit or yell or cuss, I tell my partner I’m taking a second to step outside and take a breath to collect myself before I renter and are ready to try again, never ever would I think of doing awful things to my people 😢😭

That's kind of insulting to the elderly. There are many differences between the elderly and children. I would say there are similarities, such as being dependent on others, but surely more differences than just their size.

THIS is EXACTLY why I quit nursing... It's just too much... 37 residents to 3 CNAs- that's unacceptable for the residents AND the staff... Sickening how anyone can harm a helpless little old person... Even when they're demented and aggressive, you NEVER retaliate.... I'll NEVER put my parents in one of those horror houses...

Sara CL I know. I was referring more to the gross Injustice within the health"care" business... This kind of thing happens in most facilities, not specifically these incidents, but situations similar to it... I've found that putting makeup on cadavers is far less stressful and so I took to being a mortician 🙂

Yes I work in EMS and the SNFs are understaffed and underpaid. We get called hundreds of times to those places and the Nursing staff leaves it up to the EMS and hospitals because the cannot handle those who have bad behaviors. It's worse than a psychiatric hospital it's sad. I worked as a CNA and I saw my nurse telling me to answer call lights when I had baths to do. And the nurse was sitting at the desk charting. Is charting more important than toileting or maybe dealing with an medical emergency. Long-term care is rising and going to overpopulate the society.

My grandmother was placed in a care facility and she died less than 6 months later. 😢
Short staffing in the USA also. 16, to 30 patients pet CNA depending where you work per certified Nursing assistant.

I'm a nurse thts been in ltc as well and.....I never last longer than 3 months because of the way the facility treats it's staff and residents... it's bad. I vowed to never work in another ltc facility ever again and it's sad. I would be punished for taking a longer time to care for the 35 plus pts tht I had....the "limit" was 1 hour.....

So many lies, when I was 19 years old I worked in a nursing home and they gave me 15 clients that I had to get ready, feed, get up, change, do everything. there wasn't enough time and I had too many people, so I never used to take breaks. I used to see some of the other aides who did absolutely nothing for the clients, never washed them up, never got them up, never changed them until it was end of shift, it was horrible. I used to complain and finally that's why I quit I just couldn't stand seeing this.
My big brother 's first job was in a nursing home. He made friends with some of the residents and when some died he was real sad.

I was hired to do construction at a nursing home. We informed staff to remove residence from the area due to contaminated air.. not only did they refuse to move them, they would neglect and talk trash to these people.

THESE NURSING HOMES JUST DO NOT HIRE ENOUGH STAFF TO CARE FOR THESE PEOPLE PROPERLY. IT IS ALL ABOUT PROFIT.
Nope. They would hire more but there's no magical machine that pumps out trained nurses who are willing to work with the old and dying on a 24/7 basis. There's a massive labor shortage.

he biggest problem here, is that these homes, and the government agencies that are supposed to be regulating, and making sure this sort of garbage doesn't happen, is almost 100% managed, and staffed by women! I don't care who thinks that's a bad thing to say! It's the truth, it's a fact, and political correctness has no place in this discussion!!! This same behavior takes place in any setting when there is an all female staff. They are very particular about their "pecking order", and the atmosphere is extremely "clicky"! Most of the women at the top of these pecking orders, focus most of their effort maintaining those positions, and they put in just enough into their actual job,to get by without raising any concerns, and the rest of the time is gossip, rumors, backstabbing Facebook, and POF! Medical clinics are really bad for this, but at least they have doctors around all time, that are usually part owners, or partners in the office. The worst part of it is, the entire system, is almost impossible to be fired from! It's one big swamp of corruption, and deception and they have learned not to eat each other, but rather watch out, and protect one another, and they're set for life! The ones that don't "fit their desired profile", are pushed out quickly, so if anyone complains and tries to blow the whistle on them, they, simply say they're just disgruntled former employees that had to be let go for whatever reason, and they just want to get even with someone for being fired. It's a simple, but very effective system.
This is a problem in the U.S. as well. I had trouble giving all I wanted to for 8 residents. The need is great. We should not have to work hard and with all our hearts to go home feeling guilty AND exhausted !
It's very sad to know that seniors are living like this. I have seen my 98 years old mother treated badly by caregiver. She didn't want to complain because of fear. I am so sorry that we have to send our loved ones to care homes.
Please keep your elders home with you. It would be cheaper to hire a private nurse that to stick your beloved’s in a home without knowledge of what happens to them.

Thats why she said to hire a private nurse... you don't have to be home you can work all you want and if you are paying for someone to be in a home than you have money to hire a private nurse... Putting someone in a home isn't free at least in Canada it isn't
Not for some. The lady that hit that man well that's what I mean. Family can't handle it. State hospital if you do hit in a nursing home.
Around here (Westchester county, NY), a private nurse costs $275-300 a day if she has a place to sleep and can sleep during the night and $20 an hour if you need real 24/7 care i.e. 2-3 caretakers working in shifts. Assisted living with memory care is 7000-10000 a month, but there are some small residential assisted living places for 3000-5000 a month, so home care isn't cheaper. Also, in some states e.g. NY, Medicaid will cover it once savings run out - pretty quickly at this rate, do your math, but in other states e.g. NJ, Medicaid will not cover round the clock home care. So it's not that easy. Assisted living is private pay only, but it's cheaper than home care if there are savings.
Also, in my case, for example, I have my father with Alzheimer's living with me. I took him to live with me after my mom died. For now I manage alone using a local daycare center, a cleaning lady, and an occasional private help for "respite" e.g. to go away for a weekend. But it may get more difficult soon. I am considering a private nurse, but a) I don't have an extra bedroom, only two, one for me and one for my father, so where will she sleep? b) it's difficult for me to imagine a stranger in my home, in my kitchen.

So sad....I've seen an aide dragging an older woman down the hall by the hair because the aide wanted to do her homework and the resident wouldn't stay in bed.

This happens in the US too. Long-term facilities, nursing homes, they all are short-staffed, any hour of the day or night. Many have covered it up by paying off officials, hushing clients or employees. I worked for several years as a CNA in these places, and it broke my heart.
What I don't understand is there's not enough money to take care of the old American people . But there's plenty of money to send to other countries and to house all the people ftom other countries that are coming to America . Can someone please explain ?

I cared for my moms parents and now my mother. For the past 10 or more years. But I told my kids I would never make them care for me. Just help me find a good nursing home. I gave up my whole life taking care of someone. Even took care of my dad when my mom had to work or had to pack a big hole in his foot. She couldn’t do it. But for parents today should never trap there kids to have to take care of me. I feel past generations were selfish in thinking it was there kids job to care for them. For they have families and a life to live. I didn’t have kids to do my work growing up or to care for me when I’m old and can’t do for myself. Not that I don’t have awesome kids. Cause they said we will take care of you mom. And I said oh no you won’t. Your going to enjoy your life and not be burden with me. I love caring for everyone. But that is who I am. I just don’t feel it’s right to make them feel they have to do it. Like I was made to feel. But God bless everyone who takes care of there parents or grandparents. For you all are living angels.

My friend did laundry for a small nursing home in our old neighborhood, I went with her to help many times. One time I grabbed a few grapes from my lunch, a beautiful woman (25-30) in a wheelchair asked me for some, I gave them to her; she was so grateful, said she'd had no fresh fruits or veg's. in 2 years! I gave her my whole bag when I left, then asked what her faves were; she said those sweet red grapes, just like I'd given her, but any berries. My fave food is berries too I told her.
When we brought back clean laundry & picked up more next week, I brought her a huge bag of red grapes, as well as bananas, red & green apples (& in-betweens), pears, cherries & a canister of mixed nuts; the look on her face was such a Blessing, & when she sobbed I couldn't help but break down & cry with her.
I brought her 'goodies' 1-2 times a month for a couple of years, until they closed the place down; she went to a place far away, but I'll never forget her!! Oh she was such a sweet girl, SHE SHARED ALL I GAVE HER WITH OTHER PATIENTS THERE! The place wasn't bad, they were treated very well, but it just costs so much for some of these little (about 12 patients) homes to make it, when Social Security is so little for the demands!! I don't have much (disabled & living with my daughter & her family now); but with 3 terminal illnesses, I'm VERY GRATEFUL to have a family that loves & WANTS to care for me to the end!!!!

Well, I am sure you thought you were doing a nice thing. But, unless you know the resident, you should not be giving them food. Some are on a restricted diet for various reasons, renal, diabetes, allergies, choke risk etc. Things you may not know, putting them at risk. Also, MHLTC do monitor the diets in LTC and fruit is provided. Some residents may say they have not had any but do.

You know I use to work in a nursing home I was the head certified nurses aide and I often went without breaks so my patient's could have the health care they needed. Plus I made sure the other aides took their breaks on time when I see aggression from a patient then I talked to them calmly and was able to do for them that the other aides couldn't do.
Thank goodness there are ppl like ypu. Though there is no excuse for voilence let alone agaianst a vunerable patient i think the low pay staffing shortage ect can manifest feelings of anger resentment and just plain exhaustion leasing to some of these instances. I also think proper training on psychological techniques should also be in the curriculum. First and formost though would be min ratios. Our loved ones are suffering so shareholders can stay rich and politicians can brag at "efficiency" bc of lower costs. All at the expense of iur most valued treasure our older citizens......outrageous and unconscionable....

The first one you see is two elderly individuals. This happens a lot unfortunately. Having worked in a nursing home. People with dementia will think that someone is in their house and attack them. Sometimes it's us, and sometimes it's other residents.

No it's not as simple as that..because that is simpleton and deflection. One, most people with elderly parents STILL have to work to make it, last I checked. Two, some people require 24/7 care and are severely disabled thus there are many families that can't provide complex care at home. Three: Some people have no family at all. Four: I personally know some people that are in a nursing home with their elderly parents. I could go on with plenty of examples as to reasons why care from adult children isn't possible in many cases...but you get the point. And the point not to skirt around the real issue and blame the family (which is pathetic) is to get those nursing homes cleaned up and providing adequate health care giving..that's the REAL problem.

I used to have up to 23 patients per shift at a nursing home. It was my first CNA job so I assumed it was normal. Then I would be double shifts (3pm-7am) and my manager would text me if I could stay for 8 more hours (7am-3pm).. even though I had work again that same day… then I knew it was not normal

This has been a problem for a LONG LONG TIME. This is normal for care facilities. I worked as a CNA for 7 years in the early 90’s and saw TONS of neglect. All I can say is if you have a loved one in a nursing home or a similar facility, BE THERE for them. The people with the strongest family presence had the best care. The staff feared losing their medical or care license and or being fired. If the staff knew that family would show up on a regular basis, that patient was treated A LOT BETTER.
And a good way to determine the quality of care there is THE SMELL. So many of the places I worked smelled like urine SO BAD. Also, walk the facility, look around. Observe the staff. Show up unexpectedly, look up the reviews. But the biggest thing is the smell. The smell will give it away every time.

@Winter Nunya, There's too many 'dysfunctional families' who frankly don't give a rat's behind about a family member who is now medically vulnerable. Higher ups should just clamp down on these crimes that's being committed! We can talk to some families until we're blue in the face. And, it's also so many honest reasons that some families simply need emotional, and financial support to get the proper care for their loved ones. You're a CNA and I truly believe you understand my reply for I, myself even thru the personal pain I've endured, will give the next carer I get a chance. And, if I find out that carer is kind and compassionate, I treat that carer with the UTMOST RESPECT & LOVE! Good people are a RARITY. That's why they just need to come down on those who are only there for the money and are neglecting/abusing patients.
So very true. My grandmother had to be put in a facility. We were there every day. We showed up at all times. We were respectful of staff but they knew any of us could pop up at any time. She and her roommate were treated exceedingly well. Their room was spotless and the staff was always nice. Nursing home are extremely understaffed. It’s a for profit system and the nursing home try to squeeze as much profit out of the residents and staff by giving as little as possible.

My mom worked in nursing homes for over 35 years, and saw similar things like this on a daily basis, even some by families, which is awful, and when it happens, they as in nurse's, aide's have no where to turn, it's not fair to the family or the staff,they work hard,I mean really hard, and even holidays when family isn't there,they are,every day and it's not right, families please DO YOUR HOMEWORK on each and every home you look into before putting your loved ones in a facility, NOT ALL ARE BAD, but need to look into EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of the place BEFORE making what SHOULD BE ONE OF THE HARDEST DECISIONS OF YOUR AND THIER LIVES, it's up to YOU
I have zero tolerance for elder mistreatment. I don't anger or annoy easily (which is why I work so well with confused and/or combative patients), but if I catch a coworker mistreating one of my little ladies or elderly gentlemen, hell hath no fury like mine. I have, and will continue to confront and report any coworker who harms or neglects my residents.
My father at age 94 was bashed by another resident in a home. He was terribly battered and bruised. It broke my heart, as a young man he was as strong as an ox.
Sadly we lost him at age 97.

My father is a 73 year old man, veteran from his years of service in the navy, he worked with the radars on his ships. He is now a victum of strokes that paralysed him on the left side of his body, and it messed up his memory also. His insurance will pay for him to stay in a nursing home facility, but I said NO WAY!!! He is at home with me and i take care of him! I will take care of him untill the day our Lord calls him to go home. There is no way I would ever allow him to be a victum in a nursing home. I trust none of them! My mother is 65 and i will do the same for her when and if the time comes. Its hard, its sad, its exhausting at times.... But I know they have felt the same way at times when raising myself and my sisters!!! I am so happy to be able to take care of them and im blessed to have them. Im 36 years old and i am able to live in THIER HOME, so thier still at thier home and didnt have to leave thier home.... I feel lucky and blessed that finacially between the 4 of us, they are taken care of, and they never HAVE to go somewhere, like a nursing home. When i say my prayers i thank God that they are able to stay at thier home and they go home to God from Thier home. I feel sorry for the familys that are in situations where thier loved ones have to go to a nursing home for some reason. I feel blessed that i will never have to worry about what could possibly happen. My parents raised me, was there when i needed them, and im blessed to be able to take care of my parents, and be here when they need me.
These places are horrible!!! They need more and better people working in them, and doctors that wont just make them all f'ed up on phych meds like thier zombies! Then allow them to be abused. Nursing homes need more, and better rules and laws. Then they need to follow up and inforce those laws! Untill there is MAJOR change, I feel sorry for anyone who has to go there for whatever reason.

The thing about these “investigations” is that they conveniently ignore the role of corporate greed and poor management. Most of these PSW’s are extremely overworked, underpaid, over-stressed, and short staffed. I worked as a PSW in a nursing home for a year before running away. We had 15-20 patients on any given day and NEVER had time to perform the care we were meant to provide. It was not only terrible for the patients, but also for the workers. Corporate greed is why these incidents are on the rise. They treat their employees like garbage and treat the residents like numbers. Go after the management and go after the corporations that create these environments as well as holding employees accountable. This faux “hero” shock video does absolutely nothing but scape goat the problem on the staff whom have zero control over the atmosphere they work in.

Well, there are 2...a Nurse with 10+ residents, who meds can be from 7-40+ (and all you have to check and double check and know or research prior administration, with assessments before and after) and a tech 10+ residents...at NIGHT time, that is the fun part - HALF THE STAFF IF NOT TRIPLE OF THE DAY STAFF (ex. day time tech has 15 residents, moderate-total care, night time tech has 30-45)...
depending on the facility designed ratios and funds available. Nursing homes are extremely underfunded and in high demand of trained staff...
you would think that paying THAT much money would guarantee a more frequent interactions with the residents, however, there are no ratios and staff just gets overworked, exhausted, underpaid, lots of injuries in staff, with that increases the risk of injuries and safety for a resident, supplies, etc. etc. etc...it's a lot of factors and they are not properly addressed, I assume..
however, violence against a resident is UNACCEPTABLE and should always be reported if suspected for investigation.
Until there is a law with reasonable ratios, trained staffing, and proper funds, there is little nursing homes can do with what they have available...it is quiet sad, in truth..

2000 a month? Where did you find such a place. Where I live it's more like 14,000 a month for a nursing home. Assisted living with memory care is a little cheaper, I could probably find $8000-10000 a month; some residential assisted living places are 3000-5000, but they would only take people who can still walk and feed themselves. Home care would run you 10,000 a month.
I grew up in a family where you house and take care of the elderly. Be there for them, till the end.

Here's the bottom line. When you in a nursing home long term you're usually on medicaid and social security. Social Security doesn't pay for the whole care medicaid kicks in. The nursing homes don't get paid as much for those residents as they do for people that are there just for rehab so you get less help and less care.
This makes me so sad and OUTRAGED.

I was a nurse working in Florida. This is what nursing is like. The hospital actually sends nurses home on the basis of how many patients they have on the floor. However we get admissions coming in 24 hours a day. We the nurses are running to just finish giving medication and getting documentation done. You complain and they tell you the problem is you. I have told the patients to complain about the lack of help in hopes that something will change. I saw them drug up a patient so much he could not eat on his own. So they implanted a feeding tube. I even documented that if I hold off on psychiatric medication patient was able to eat himself and appropriately swallow his food. Other nurses did not want to to deal with him. They medicated him and the tube was placed. This patient was not underweight. He had been eating fine until they started medicating him. The family did not understand the circumstances. The doctor could only go by what the other nurses documented. No one seemed to care but me. Not much more I could do. They did not assign me to the patient after I said something. Again so busy on the floor and so much more to worry about. The medical field is ruled by money not care. It is really sick.
My poor mom that I solely took care of and had siblings that over rode me to put her in a nursing home. They gave my poor mother so much medication she looked like a zombie. I got guardianship and made sure they cut her medications in half. They don’t have time for one on one care and it’s extremely hard to care for them but don’t sedate them where they can’t even function.

Assets. House, car, any leftover funds is yours. I felt so bad. I didn’t want anything from my mother. I felt bad taking what she had left.

I worked in a nursing home a long time ago. A lot of the residents are nice while the rest are mean. The ones who are mean to me or try to hit me I hold my hands up and I speak slowly and say " I have to clean you up. We must make you beautiful/handsome. I know you may be on pain and I'm sorry for that. I'll try to be gentle but please dont hit me. How about I sing to you? Would that help? What is your favorite song? Can you sing it to me I would so love to hear it." Or " it's time to eat/take your meds. I know you dont like it but I want you to be strong and healthy. How about we eat outside in the sunshine? I will see if that's allowed. How about I read to you? What's your favorite book? I know your having a bad day. How can we change that? Sometimes they dont talk back, but that doesn't stop me from talking. Even if I couldn't remember their names I still called them beautiful and handsome. It made them smile. I was the youngest worker there but a lot of the veteran workers picked up my method and gave it a try. Residents and staff were happy. I was sad when a fire took that place out but happy that no lives were lost. If you hate the job then quit.

Sounds like you were dealing with adult babies. The elderly can be fussy at times, and also seem to be entitled (cause of their old age (aka I'm older & I should be respected) and their savings with which they pay for the services).

I’m a caregiver and I’m devastated by this I go to my job and do my best for them to be comfortable and have a good living, I have been hit by a couple of them that have dementia but they can’t understand what’s happening around them.
My mom works in one of those homes and she has told me to never put her in a home, just seeing this I understand why she doesn't want me to put her there.
They are understaff because nobody would want to work for this places, low salary for too much work with high risk of injuries.
This is the same for the special education department and for group homes. Nobody wants to work in them because of the low wages, under-appreciation, and often chaotic environment. The disabled population in the world is abused more than any other group because nobody cares for them and it's never reported.

It is honestly a SHAME how these so called care givers treat the elderly!!!! If ANYONE treated my mother like that, I'd be in jail!! I don't have that to worry about because my brothers and my sister make sure that our mother is taken care of and she will NEVER go into a nursing home! She raised us and took very good care of us, so we will do the same for her. As long as I have a home, she does too. Simply heart breaking and brought tears to my eyes to see the abuse here!!!

I was a nurse and a couple of nursing homes. The best thing a family can do for their loved one is to have drop-in visits and don't notify them ahead of time. No one assume your loved one is getting the care they should be getting. Most nursing homes are understaffed and all you hear about is budget budgets. It made me so sick. I eventually went to work as a hospice nurse and that was easier than seeing what happens in the nursing home

Another big reason for rising resident on resident violence is that we now have mental health patients over 65 being put into long term care. Psws are not trained in mental health. It is being done because long term care is cheaper. This is so wrong on many levels. What did they think would happen when you put mental health patients with patients with dementia?

They used to have different facilities for all these different groups of people now we are all lumped in together and no one is trained how to deal with this dynamic

An 18 year old does not belong with the elderly who suffer from dementia etc. A young person should be in a smaller group home getting the proper help to live as a young person. When I was an aide our ratio was usually 12-16 per worker. You can barely get your work done, and then administration disciplines you for reporting that you didn't take a lunch too often lol what a joke
I have a friend who retired from a facility in Monroe, Michigan after 28 years, and many different owners, of service. Their ratio was a whopping 42:1, and they were told that overtime was not permitted. Often she did her charting after punching out. She also said that the nurses (she refused) charted all drug distributions at one time, i.e. this pill at x o'clock, that drug at x o'clock; then shoved all the pills down the patient's throat at whatever o'clock. Often, drugs were charted as administered, then never given, because the nurse was either too lazy or had to punch out and leave. My mom was in a facility a few years ago with horrid hip pain. The home assured my dad that they would give her pain meds as prescribed by the doctor, and confiscated the meds she brought from home. My mom would scream in pain, begging for her meds. When my dad went in and confronted them, they showed him my mom's chart, reflecting times and meds given to my mom. What the facility DIDN'T know was that my mom is a meticulous record keeper. Her records reflected 9 or 10 hours between pain meds which were ordered to be given every 4 hours. Often the nurses went 12-18 hours without giving her pain meds. It was a glorious day when my dad said ENOUGH! He took her home. She eventually had a hip replacement, spent a few weeks in a different facility that actually gave her the care that my dad paid for, and she is back home. Unfortunately, a good facility is a rarity!

A lot of long term care companies just fire the workers who are involved because they dont want their company to be drag in lawsuits
