    The more I watch stuff like this, the more attractive it becomes to buy a few acres of land, grow our own food, plant a few fruit trees, some strawberry plants, some raspberry bushes, raise a cow and a pig every year, raise chickens for our eggs and poultry and become as self sufficient as possible

      It's hard work on its own, starting it off is hard too, and will only get more and more expensive as the rich get richer and the poorer get poorer, land becomes more scarce and the average person is no longer able to start such a thing. Already that way where I am in Germany, with all the regulations added on top. Americans have it lucky at least, there is plenty of land there.
      It's very depressing.

      You think that it would be logical for someone to make their "money makers" sound more dangerous by putting EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK? I know that if i saw that , personally, i would wonder what that 'risk' is. It'd de-interest me faster than eating passed a best b4 date. U have a good point but... This is food we r talking. W no best b4 date and a beware risk type of switch ... Itd be like not taking responsibility for serving gross sick inducing , disease causing (in worse case) , old foods. No. They need to serve it and serve it fresh. it is real shady to allow ppl to serve the population w this risk warning and is tampering.. so i think so.

Maybe not to the same degree, but don't go into this with your eyes shut and be choosy, not trustingly lazy, be on the alert. I went into an Asian market, in the USA and there was a lid unscrewed on a jar of sauce. I told a clerk and he did nothing about it. I put it back on the shelf and don't buy sauce there. Always check lids for tightness and must be wrapped. That was just sauce, other things could be that way too.

      I used to work in a bakery at a grocery store that was small and local, but growing, about 4 stores now, and at least in the bakery this is true. My manager would tell me to date pies that came in frozen (we displayed them in a refrigerated case) for 2 weeks, when I told her the box said it had 5 days, she informed me that was how many days the pie could sit at room temperature. These were cream pies...you really don't want to leave them at room temp for a few hours, let alone a day. The cakes that were made from scratch were then frozen until decorated with no FIFO system. When mixing batters and other items from scratch we often used expired dairy from the dairy department and were told its fine to use. There was so much more going on, but these are things that I often warn people about who I hear speaking about this company.

      I would imagine local stores have more to lose and can't waste a dime, so they'd want to extend how long they can sell something to lessen the loss of product because they can't afford as many losses as these multi million dollar companies and corporations. :/ But on the other hand, local stores are more personal, more familiar and involved in the community so they may care about it more, and can't afford to ruin their reputation amongst the locals cause that would also result in loss. So I guess it depends.

    • @thesaddestcat70
      @thesaddestcat70 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've worked in produce, bakery, and meat at a large chain. None of what they've shown would ever happen at my store. Fruit is washed in antimicrobial and antifungal solutions, it's then dried before being used on a cake. If a cake doesn't sell in five days it's frozen to preserve it till the local food bank can pick it up. If meat needs to be repackaged it retains it's original use by date. Ground beef is the fastest selling item in the meat department and it is only given one day to sell before being donated. There's little incentive to break company policy since we get payed the same amount no mater how profitable the week is. I suspect they would be more inclined to find creative ways of extending the life of their products at a smaller store.

    Behavior like this varies from company to company.
    I worked at 2 cafés in my student-life. The first one we were told to be VERY safe about expiration dates and "best before" labeling. We even got the allowance of our boss to throw anything out we had doubts about if it was still good.
    The second place I worked on, mainly sold cake. I worked sparcely whenever Uni allowed it. But it was quite disturbing to return to my shift after 2 weeks of study, just to find the very same cake in the display I left there in my past shift. I always threw it away if that happened, and just told my boss it sold out when he asked where it went.
    I didn't care much if he found out and fired me. It was just to get some cash on the side. My life wasn't depending on this job. But I'd much rather get fired than potentionally harming the customers that I serve.

    Fortunately, I shop at a grocery store that I totally trust. Management is very strict and they have a large open meat department where you can see the meat being prepared and packaged. If a meat in the meat counter that is 3 or 4 days from the sell by date, a red sticker is put on it that says "reduced for quick sale". It's still good, but you know it needs to be used right away. I never buy pre-packaged meats like Kroger and Wal-Mart sell. I was a Dept Manager at Wal-Mart about a year just because I was bored and thought going back to work after years of staying home might be fun (it wasn't so I'm back at home). I know for a fact their meats are injected with something before they're shipped so they look nice and fresh when they arrive at the store. You have no idea how fresh that meat really is because it's been chemically engineered to look fresh. Kroger meats are mostly all pre-packaged also. I've been shopping at my local Ingles for 20 years and refuse to go anywhere else because I know exactly how they operate. I know I'm getting good quality from a trustworthy store.

I bought a lot of baked goods from there but only the frozen ones and in the original form. Of course, I knew which ones during my shift. When the store was bought by Wall Street corporation , at night all the baked goods in the self serve cases were repackaged and dated for sale ( yeah, after some nasty customers would touch with their bare hands). I now bake my own stuff. Million recipes on you tube. I also don’t suggest you buy already cut fruit and vegetables, especially fruit, don’t be lazy, a few minutes and you’re safe.

If someone in my department did something like this they would not be working for me. Even my manager wanted to do date altering and I raised a stink and took all the products and threw them out, cost the department hundreds of dollars, but I would not stand for that or allow anyone to do it not even my boss! Listen to this! I worked with poor elderly as their care giver for "In home Support Services". I took them grocery shopping at Safeway. Jan my elderly lady (Jan and Mike were elderly very disabled couple) she told me always look at what is in the "Manager's special bin". The prices were awesome and everything was close to date, frequently grey brown . But having worked in food I didn't flinch. One day I shopped for self, saw a young butcher pick up trays of meat that had past date. (seniors shop early morning so I did) the dates had past by days. The meat was grey brown and even moldy. I decided to ignore the Manager's special bin. Came back thinking about informing them of what they "overlooked" the young guy printed out new dates. So if today is July 8th meat looked bad and had July 6 date. Then he printed and posted dates 2 days later, such as best before July 10th. Both dated stickers were on the meat. Old people with diminished cognitive function due to mental illness and dementia can't out fox the store. Morally wrong and dangerous. But here in the US we like our poor to be very very poor. So of course folks living on benefits are going to buy it. They think they can;t afford todays prices. Vicious cycle.

    And people talk about hygiene issues and corruption in developing countries? I eat far better quality and organic food consisting of fruits, veg, and meat purchased from local small farmers or directly from the butcher, who I actually witness butchering the cut of mutton, beef or pork I have requested when I travel in the Caribbean. And when I purchase fish from the fish market, it has, on more than one occasion still been alive when being off loaded from the boat. I'm just floored and disheartened by what I have just seen. It seriously makes me question the so called "superior" quality of life we "think" we are living in supposedly "first world/developed" countries. Thank you for enlightening us!

    • @RedWhirlWind
      @RedWhirlWind 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      the problem with developed countries is the political corruption aka capitalism, where profits are more important than citizen. while developing countries also have political corruption and violence, they also have a lack of any safety nets for their citizens, etc. the benefits of living near water and having a good growing climate are just geographic benefits, which don’t really have much to do with developed vs developing countries. while resources are valuable, if you are not a developed nation, you will most likely get taken advantaged by other developed countries, this is also due to a capitalistic mentality.

      @NeilRoy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Tempa T Nice! I use fresh ground black pepper all the time. The kind that comes in a bottle with a built in pepper grinder so I grind it myself (much better flavour). Though I still question the theory that cholesterol causes heart attacks, given the fact that it is a natural substance created by the body and used for things like repairing arteries and such. The whole idea of it causing heart attacks was rejected by the AMA when it was first proposed. And more recently I heard a heart surgeon state that he seen more people with low cholesterol coming in with heart problems than those with high cholesterol. This fact surprised him causing him to look into the history of cholesterol and the idea that it causes heart attacks and that is when t he guy discovered the idea was rejected in the past when it was first proposed.
      Cholesterol lowering medications have been found to make no difference in your life span when examined in studies and they cause big problems in your legs, with weakening and other issues.
      My dad has high cholesterol, he was on Lipitor (a statin) for a while, but it weakened his legs so he went off of it. He just turned 79. So... I wouldn't worry so much about that. There is more evidence that SUGAR is a major cause of heart attacks. In fact, a secret document was found in a sugar company's records (it went bankrupt) where they KNEW about this as far back as the '70s. Excess, processed sugar causes diabetes, heart attacks and is even suspected to cause Alzheimer's disease.

      Politicians goal is to poison the health compromised and elderly to cut social security costs. The Politicians won't pass any laws for food safety for the less fortunate because politicians always can afford the best quality food.

      i used to work at a small independent grocery and my manager told us we were allowed to extend the best by date by a week, we would also use the "reddening" technique. We never extended best date by more than a week. I now work at a much larger grocer, which doesn't do that thankfully. I think some of the smaller stores really rely on dirty techniques to reduce their waste costs unfortunately.

    Supermarket baked goods , deli products, & highly processed foods are looked at, and passed.
    Meat comes from a real butcher or is fresh vacum sealed from a reputable food wholesale that supplys resteraunts & others in the catering trade.
    I've recently gone off, fish & fries which were a sometimes treat. Other fast foods, I've gone thru the retailers & now have found a small Italian owned reseruant which makes the nicest Pizzas in town - fresh ones, & the place seats 20 & is popular.
    Even the fruit & vege at the supermarkets are given space to stay on the shelf, while the farmers market is used.

      Frozen stuff is also (usually) much fresher than "fresh" stuff in supermarkets. Wether you are talking about vegetable or meat. Frozen meat can't get rotten as easily and they will pretty much always freeze it without a major delay. Or unripe fruits that ripe during the travel in boxes to be fresh in your supermarket - better to have them frozen on harvest and then transported.

    I'm amazed by this. When I worked as a fruit seller (mostly in small markets, but in 2012 I worked at one of Condis supermarkets), EVERYTHING that was past-due was destroyed: if something was expiring that same day, then the cats could have it, but if it expired the day before it was not even for the stray cats.
    In the supermarket they were REALLY focused on avoiding anything out of shelf life to even be in the shops and they pushed for it from the beginning.

I think that supermarkets get the food they don't sell, freeze and then repackage them. Now on I'm buying from the local greengrocer. Valuable lesson learnt.

    I bought potato salad, about 3 lbs worth from a supposedly reputable market in Hamilton Square, NJ. The top of this seemed fresh but 2 tablespoons down, the food starting tasting very sour. It was quite obvious, 90% of this food was old and a bit of new stuff dumped on top to make it appear 100% fresh. I was so outraged that I took it back the next day and demanded my money back. Let me tell you folks: supermarket managers will comply almost always to the will of the customer, especially if you start raising your voice in outrage. Nothing kills business faster than bad mouthing the products they sell. Don't be afraid of standing your ground. But be very afraid for the millions of others that fall silent because they are afraid to be confrontational about these serious matters. Don't forget - tens of millions of people contract food poisoning each year. You needn't look far to find the source.
