Across Canada, only 20% of kids who need looking after can get into a licensed daycare that has rules for safety and training. Most children go to unlicensed or private daycare....an unregulated industry...where no one's checking up.

I went to a licensed day care in Alma, Arkansas called Kiddie Kollege. They made the children who didn't pay for special instruction, sit in the sun on the ground while a teacher told them how horrible they and their parents were for not paying extra. Once, a baby was hit so hard she had bruises. A child was beaten. Another, my friend Karen, fell down a deep hill, almost a ravine, and when she climbed out a bone was sticking out of her arm. They refused to let her call her mom and said it was just a scratch. She came back the next day in a cast. I was refused the bathroom at seven years old for four hours and I ended up peeing my pants because of it.
Just because you're licensed, doesn't mean you're a good place to go.

It doesn't matter what state you're in, if it's a licensed daycare or if you're a foster parent/family, you are legally a mandatory reporter, and what they did was wrong and they should've been punished even worse than a typical person because they are "more aware of the law". My family was a licensed foster family and we had an in-home daycare (it was unlicensed) but all of us (not required by all family members to be a foster family) were licensed CPR, First Aid and AED certified. We (unfortunately) had to even report the mother of 3 of the children we took care of. But we would be up at 4 A.M. to receive the children so the mom and dad could go to work. We would walk the mile and a half to their school, and hold their hand on the walk back to make sure they were safe, we made sure they got healthy food to eat, a proper place and toys to play, and proper beds, pillows, blankets, stuffies (usually they brought stuffies with them) to sleep.

Ha. I babysat in highschool, being a daycare teacher is quite different. We are not only required to have CPR and first aid training, but also repeated training in child abuse and communicable disease. Add to the the hours of other classes we are required to have each year. Plus, in my state your center has to comply with a quality enhancement program, which requires teachers to write a curriculum based on the early childhood learning standards. Babysitting indeed

I went to a daycare that wasn't fully official. She was a good caretaker. She had us call her "Auntie (her name)" but the older ones didn't have to if they didn't want to. She had kids of her own that were adults, and sometimes her granddaughter would come over. She had books, movies, toys, and if anyone brought candy or fruit snacks for lunch she would split it with all of us. She let us play outside, and there was often a few babies too. She was a really sweet person.

    • @1212DragonGirl
      @1212DragonGirl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

Sock Cat mine was really sweet too. Most of her kids were adults besides two of them and she would watch after their kids too along with me and my brothers, so we always had someone to play with. She had lots of toys and movies and she made really good homemade chocolate chip cookies all the time for us. We would play outside and go for bike rides to the park and she’d push us on the swings and play games with us. Her youngest son played guitar so we’d listen to him play and he had guitar hero on his PlayStation and he’d let us play it. She even had a crib set up and everything, took care of me since I was a baby and same with my brothers. We’ve become really close with her family we pretty much consider them apart of ours by now. We no longer need her to watch over us because my brothers can look after themselves now and I’m an adult but we still visit and talk from time to time. Crazy how fast time flies though.

Yes. Like a live stream all day that parents can see any time. Plus recorded. I think people would be more careful with other peoples kids if they knew they could be being wstched at any time. I would love to start a home daycare, but I don't have proper space. I babysit occasionally but that is only a kid that is 10 already. She is friend to my daughter and son. I have had her and her brother overnight and brought them to the school bus once. My CPR/ First aid training is expired and i would like to upgrade that. My husband has his so i ferl better when he is around. I would wait until my husband and i get a bigger place, and I have at least updated my CPR/ first aid. I homeschool my kids so it would be challenging. I would need to hire another person and maybe tske 1-3 kids ( maybe older as in school aged for after school needs) After school or weekends us when I babysit most. There really needs to be more licensing though. That way you have proof that they gave CPR/ first aid, and early childhood development etc. Im not saying all home daycares are this horrible or unsafe( i know a few that are deffinately not like this! Plus even licensed daycares have their issues st times, but licensing or some sort if standards need to be in place. All daycares should be registered with the government and regularily inspected without noyice at any time. If your running it right youve got nothing to worry about.

@@ab17364 daycares and nannies offer this but it costs more regardless of if they're upfront about costs cheaper places wouldn't do it. One of the biggest problems about childcare Atleast in the u.s. is how expensive it is. If you live in a city or even a nicer suburban area childcare can easily run 1200+ per month per child. If youre low income it can even make you poorer due to not being able to afford it. And subsidized care often restricts where you can take your kids and that effect when and even where you can work making it even more difficult. Single parenting makes all of this even worse. Business insider did a great video on child care and the costs of it even people making 100k+ can struggle with affording it. Which is why illegal and unlicensed daycares thrive. When you only earn 2000 a month even 40$ a day or 200 a week is expensive. And thats dirt cheap for daycare.

It's really not hard to get CPR, and First aid certified. I'm only 14, but still managed to go to the classes. I also attended an entire babysitting class that prepares you for emergencies and how to handle children of all ages. You'd be surprised how many parents are actually more comfortable with a young teenager like myself than an adult. Unlicensed babysitting isn't horrible, it's how the parents themselves go about. I have lunch with every single parent so they can evaluate me before I take on their children. The parents need to take it upon themselves to regulate who is babysitting their children, and the babysitters need to put the children first. I can only handle roughly 3 children, and I won't babysit an infant because I don't feel comfortable doing so even though I'm technically qualified thanks to the classes I attended. I honestly babysit because I enjoy being with children, and during the summer, and on school breaks it's nice. It should never be about the money.

I’m so thankful I’m a stay at home mom. I took my oldest to a licensed daycare for two weeks. He was only a year and a half. He cried the whole time there, nobody comforted him and he sat in his dirty diapers all day long. He never had diaper rash until he went there and his butt was nearly raw. I pulled him out immediately and never put any of my kids back in daycare. I stay home all day and watch them, then work at night while my boyfriend watches them. Exhausting but worth it

Bad stuff happens in America too. Too many in Atlanta are run by street people hired-without background check-only because the business isn't allowed to turn them down due to race or religion. A well-groomed black lady with an early childhood degree was turned down in favour of a Burka-draped lady with barely a high school ed. with an unpleasant personality and body odour. Months later, she was fired for letting kids play w/o supervision in the outside parking lot and theft. She also hit a child.

My 8 months daughter came back with a slap on her face, next day I got my daughter out of the daycare and was merciful enough to do not report her.
A year later through my divorce process, the dayhome provider shows up with my ex in court to provoke me in front of the judge, she tells me here I am you can t do anything, showed her my daughter s slap and she bursted out laughing.

After I was married, people constantly asked when we were going to start a family, I always replied with , " when it's the right time". I was a preschool teacher and still wouldn't bring my own child into the day-care. At 30 years old, I had our first child and I stay home with my children all because I waited. I waited until we were financially able to provide and be the best parents we could be. Staying home makes sense because childcare is so expensive, you're basically working just to pay the day-care. Most importantly, you're watching your own children and keeping them safe and spending time with them that you'd never get back. We make plans for everything in our lives, our education, trips, marriage, ect why do people have kids without planning first? There are some life circumstances you can't plan around such as illness or loss, but having kids when you're not financially stable and have no one to watch them is just irresponsible.

Maybe you live in one of those states where the people have "taken back their state" from government oversight? Whenever someone got sick at our daughter's daycare, a letter from the nurse went home to every parent in the school. And every teacher - all of them - were certified to use CPR, AEDs, etc., because they were actually paid a decent wage.

Or, you can get Susan next store to do it 5 dollars an hour. It's ridiculous. Most daycares, kids have to pass tests, or they're not allowed

RedTeamWolf A quality daycare isn't cheap. Ratios in centers at best for infants are 1 adult to 3 children or sometimes 1 adult to 4 children (and I'm talking less than 2 years of age). This is for safety. The US also allows home day care to become licensed as long as they meet certain standards - which aren't difficult - covers on outlets, a play area, eating area standards, etc.

The poor on average, are poor because of shitty choices. They choose to not work or not get an education, pop out 50 kids, or smoke cigarettes at $8 bucks a pack and rent furniture and have cell phones, etc. Those that are truly disabled or sick, that's a different story. There's already plenty of money to go around for them out of the taxes that are already being paid.

He loved his daycare friends and workers. To this day, the person who was the daycare manager is friends with my son and with me on face book. She still is part of our circle of friends. I so appreciate those workers that helped me raise my son. He was in that daycare till he entered grade one and had to go to a school farther away. I was fortunate to find a community school with child care for him. He was there from grade 1 and two until we moved out of the city. Watching this....I realize how blessed we were....check day cares out really good and do your research. It's worth it. I'd never put my child in an unlicensed day care.

She tells my mum every morning what she has planned for the day and asks my brother what he would like to do along with the other 2 kids that go there. She tells my mum when she picks him up how he was and gets him to grab his drink bottle and bag. They sing and dance, play outside on the swings and bikes. If it is warm they will get in the pool. My brother really likes it there. She takes them to duck ponds if it is ok with the kids and their parents.

That sad part about this is that you only showed the "bad" unlicensed daycares. Not all unlicensed daycares are bad and if people are sending their kids to these places it's up to them to check with the care workers and see what they are certified for and what they are not certified for.

the whole point of an expose is to show what people dont realize or whats going on. They didn't say unlicensed are all bad just that they don't have proper training or proper safety procedures...

This is the slight bias I see in these "marketplace" videos. They show the worst of the worst. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just that if people are not really thinking about what they hear, they are convinced it's "this way and the only way" things are done

Nessie ! They don't need to shed light on people doing what they're sposed to. They are trying to show that the majority of parents assume that all daycares have to fallow much more strict set of rules than they really have to.

Melinda Greer how I see it is there's a spectrum. The white "good area" and the black "bad area" such as these cases. Im just saying I wish they showed the "grey area" where some are legal but borderline not which is also sketchy and a reality. I hope this clears it up? :)

I don't know if I would send my child to a unlicensed daycare period. It's not safe.

I am a nanny for a long time family friend and watch their two kids, aged 8 and 9. For families who can’t stay at home or leave their kids with family, I think it is the best option. I’ve been with them for over 5 years and know those kids like the back of my hand. They love having me over and I absolutely love keeping them!

My mom ran a daycare. I remember she treated every child there as if they were her own. It’s hard to imagine someone not doing that.

if I was an unlicenced day care runner I would not keep the kids in a basement and if my house was a mess I would clean it every day after all the kids leave and I would take them out more during the winter because it's bad for the health when u stay in a house all day

if the parents didn't care about their kids they wouldnt risk leaving them with perfect strangers in general so they can afford to provide for their children. most parents dont have a choice because their is no space and not enough liscenced daycares to care for our children

It's for this exact reason that my sister went to work for the daycare her kids ended up attending, instead of working elsewhere.
