I live in Norway. I went to my local Car Mechanic and asked for an oil change. He asked me when it was changed last, and if the filter also was changed. He then told me "come back when you've driven another 2000 miles and we will change it for you, it's still good" I came back after 2000 miles, and he asked me if I wanted to see when he changed so that I could do it myself one day if I wanted, but he would gladly change it for me always if I wanted. I now work there.
I‘ve been to a place like that in Germany. They have screens and cameras everywhere so you can follow every step they do. Very good service, very trustworthy.
I was at a place when they brought the air filter in to show a woman. I saw the filter was pretty clear and the "mechanic" had his back to me when he tried to sell the woman a new one and if he should go ahead and replace it. She could see me behind him vigorously shaking my head and mouthing the word NO and she declined. One of my small good deeds!
He means that because Canadians have a reputation for being so polite, that if even they are deceiving each other over oil changes, the rest of the nations (which are less polite) will also be victims of this practice by mechanics.
I’ve turned wrenches most my life . I’m 71 now and still do my own work. I’ve worked for numerous dealerships and never once been told to cheat a customer. I pride myself on good quality service and making sure a job is done right. All that being said I absolutely think prices and labor rates are out of control. The other day I was told I needed new upper and lower ball joints. With a 200.00 military discount the price was going to be 700.00 out the door. I decided to do the job myself. Parts were 53.00 for all four ball joints and about 1 hr per side. This is on the ground without a lift and my impact and hand tools. How does this job equate to 900.00 for the normal customer?!
Because book time calls for 3.8 or 4.2 on most all press in ball joints depends on the hourly rate parts from a shops going to be more expensive then a parts store and it would get an alignment as well
Because it gives the rest of us a bad name. You ever went above and beyond to make sure a car was done right, the whole time the customer is making an angry face at you and judging you because they think you're ripping them off. Just yesterday a lady came in for a headlight bulb and her brake pedal went to the floor with no stopping power applied. Replaced her bulb and checked the brake fluid. It was empty. She refused service, so I at least topped it off and pumped the brakes a bit to get the warning light off and get somewhat of a pedal. She then loaded up her kid in the car seat and drove off.
Thank god I took auto mechanics in high school for two years…I’m now 55, but those simple lessons have saved me thousands in rip off repairs. I’d HIGHLY recommend that everyone take a community collage course on basic automotive repair. You don’t have to be a pro, but it teaches you the basics to protect yourself from rip offs like the ones in the video. I’ve owned dozens of cars over the years, and have called out so many mechanics trying to rip me off, I lost count! (I’ve had to call the police 3 times after confronting the garage, and they threatened me!!!) Knowledge is key in protecting yourself!

Probably because the police would’ve needed to be the ones investigating it but idk how admitting evidence works in court so who knows. It’s really the reputational damage that counts tho

I'm a mechanic myself and I'm just pissed off by this type of campaign. That's why I'm trying to do everything myself, as soon as my wife drives into a garage of this type, a drama immediately begins, these people defame our profession. Dealerships do the same thing. They are constantly trying to impose too much on you in terms of price and service!
That's why you're trying to do everything yourself? The day you tell your wife to bring her car to a shop when you know how to do it yourself is the day she trades you in for someone else.

No it's not. People just don't want to pay for quality work. If you car about your car so little that you'd bring it to one of these places, then it's on you.
Happened to me once at a place like this in the US. They really bank on people knowing nothing about their cars. Brought in my suburban for an oil change and was told it also needed the front differential oil changed. This came as quite a surprise to me because the truck was 2 wheel drive and literally did not have a front differential. You can probably imagine the look on the guy's face when I told him that. Lol! These places just exist to rip people off sadly
hahaha that happens to me once too it was so hilarious when i laughed in his face and told'im that he full of it because my truck wasn't 4x4 hahaha o man it was so funny
And how is this relevant to the fact that I just wanted to have one of the testers say, I just want the "advertised" 20$ oil change? It would have been interesting to see how they handle it. If the business still would have tried to sell them more or just done what they asked. Or pretend to do the oil change etcetera.
@@lynmortem648 Hello they should have had at least one of the three be firm "just an oil change" ... however at the sametime the other "RECOMMENDATIONS" couldn't have been checked if they hadn't agreed to them ... testing to see if they were actually performed ... as we found out they weren't and the coolant recovery tank will cause engine damage ... those are completely different formulas and they ARE NOT compatible ... there are some that can be used with either the red/orange or green ... but the container must say so ... naturally the ones that aren't will SPECIFICALLY SAY SO
But that's the problem (one of them). They aren't mechanics. I have had friends who worked at these places. They were not mechanics and didn't even work on their own cars. These places really will hire almost anyone with a pulse.
DisillusionedReality I'm a mechanic myself and I know many many mechanics that really do care about costumers and their cars but I also know a bunch of them who don't give a damn and are in it just for the money.
as a mechanic, this infuriates me. it makes it so much more difficult to do my job. everyone thinks were trying to screw them because of people like this.
I'm a technician myself, and I'm so glad I work for a great company that doesn't try this on customers. We actually do videos of our multi-point inspections so that the customers can see exactly what we're seeing when we look their vehicle over. We also do video updates for any services that they've come in for. (For example, someone came in for air and after noticing their tire was flat, I informed the advisor and they made an appointment right then and there. We made a multi-point inspection video, and also provided a video showing exactly where the hole in the tire was.) I feel like more shops should adopt this system. While yes, it does make more work for techs, and longer wait times, it also helps to give transparency between customers and businesses. With these quick lube shops, it'd probably help their reputation.
I work at a small Napa, and we take pictures but usually never show them, but we have them just in case because we are not scum bags. 8 minutes for a transmission flush 😂😂 it takes over an hour in some cases.
That's one benefit of being Hispanic honestly. We know most of our mechanics like brothers so you know for sure they won't rip you off. If anything we get deals as well
Eric is correct, I know a good 3 friend mechanics who I reach out to whenever I need advice on something with my car or when I don't know exactly the cause of a problem with it
CycleCruza I know right. A pep boys told me I needed a left tie rod when I didn’t actually need one. Other garages can just screw your car up. I had my 2001 Acura TL serviced at a garage in the city and came out with an exhaust leak. How did I get an exhaust leak after I had my wheel bearings done? I mean that’s nonsense. The mechanic worked on my car acted like he didn’t know. Worst part is, the shop didn’t even tell me there was an exhaust leak before they brought out my car. I’m working on my own car next time. These mechanics are mediocre.
NissanSucks99xVT well they may have loosened a header bolt so it would leak eventually and have you come in to change the exhaust gasket. or could be a coincidence it was about to rattle loose. and mechanics suck today because everything is done with computers now. there's very few old school mechanics left. they plug in a computer it tells them what to change. they have another computer for the repair and tells the step by step with video and pictures on how to change it. so it's not very hard to become ase or nase certified anymore. almost no cars are repaired anymore that don't have a obd1 or 2 sensor under the dash anymore. they started those like 25 years ago
Once I went to Valvoline for a 15 minutes oil change. The guy worked on my car told me I needed a new battery because the voltage/amp were weak. When I told him the battery is new and it was changed two weeks ago, he apologized and said that his scanner might not be fully functional.
As a former ASE Certified Trained mechanic, I was applauded for my honesty. I would always show the customer what I was explaining to them, so they had a very clear understanding of what was Needed on their vehicle. When changing any of the fluids, I would have them come to their vehicle, so I could show them the dirty fluids, that way they could see for themselves what dirty fluid looked like and what clean fluid looked like. Also, as a vehicle owner, you have the right to see exactly what the mechanic is telling you what it needs and also, if any parts are replaced, you have the right to get your old parts back for your inspection. Always write on the work order: "I WANT MY OLD PARTS RETURNED BACK TO ME FOR MY INSPECTION!" I used to have a brother-in-law who worked at a local repair shop and he would do many DISHONEST things to customers vehicles and I told him, one day he's gonna get caught..... well, I'm glad my sister divorced him before I ever found out if he did get caught. I was trained/taught from the old school days of basic: "HONESTY"
@@dreameryoung38 Yes it's always best to find an ASE certified shop but many of them still try to sell you more than you need/want. If a mechanic tells you-you need more, always get another opinion!
Many retail stores need to take this approach. When I was a store GM (Staples), I completely ignored the company "push" sales. Focusing on profits earned from pushing high margin items on customers may work in the short term, but it's costly in the long run (because you didn't give them a reason to come back). My philosophy was to gain an understanding of a client's needs/goals (especially small businesses) so you can truly justify what you're going to sell to them. I don't care what corporate gimmick sales idea got the customer in initially. Getting the person to return because they trust you is what matters. I absolutely refused to sell that liquid armor screen protector scam. That was a grift straight from the top.
@@dreameryoung38 you'd have a real hard time finding a legit ASE certified shop at least where I'm from. I've worked for almost 8 different shops and not one was close to qualifying for ASE certs (75% of mechanics in the shop must be ASE certified for the shop to qualify). Technicians aren't usually book smart guys and getting ASE certified is a ton of serious testing, not to mention they have to be recertified every 5 years. I've met at least 100 different mechanics and maybe 5 of them bothered doing ASE certs.

I've also worked in the automotive service and repair industry, and it is true that the ENTIRE industry is plagued by incompetence and criminal behavior, whether it is the mechanic or the service advisors and managers, also don't be fooled while these chain stores are exceptionally bad, the $tealerships, and even independent shops can be every bit as crooked. Yet most of the industry leaders refuse to really own up to the systemic nature of the problem and actually do anything to really change things. The best advice I can give is when you have ANY work to your car done at all, have them explain exactly what they are going to do and insist on watching them while they do the work, and also ask for any parts back that they replace when they do a job.
The excuse you have to look out for is "It's not safe for other people to be in the garage, OHS etc etc". The parts idea is good unless maybe you want your old transmission back and you have no place to put it in your clean, new-ish car XD
Rennie Ash My personal shop I always take my car to will explain and physically show me the default. For example, I had a clunk when going over bumps and defects in the road on the right side, I took it to shop figuring it to be a strut or bushing. Mechanic walked me back to my car and grabbed the wheel and rocked it and said is this the noise? I said it is, he said "that's not the strut it's the bearing". They told me up front that in my car if they remove the bearing they will have to refill the diff fluid which I already knew. Drove home and 4 years later I have never heard the noise. If you have a shop like this don't ever go any where else as it shows they are not fucking with me, beside the fact we have used them for 10 years and have never had a complaint in my entire family.

while there are certified mechanics, like Mr. Goodwrench, this means only that they are educated to the point of doing common things. In California there is (so far?) no license required to 'be a mechanic'. If you can get the tools, you are one. I was a much more educated mechanic than Dave Dawes, but he seemed to be offended when I would try to tell him he was wrong about something. One day we went to the bank to get money to buy the overhaul kit for the twelfth car stacked up in the back of the garage. The bank said, oops there is an error, send the money back (vacuum tube delivery system) and I said, find out what the error is and send them THAT MUCH. Dave brushed me off, and sent all the money back and we waited for our 'change'... which didn't come. We went in the front door (and nearly to jail) because the bank said that they would have to 'tally the registers' and THEN return any moneys. We lost two days, waiting for that money. See, DD had a talent for selling people on the idea that 'hey, it's a big big desert, bad place to have your car screw up!." That is exactly how he sold the engine overhaul to a car owner with 20k miles on the engine.
Sadly this is common worldwide, here in Brazil what is most common is cheap tire, you get a new tire for half the price of a good one but you have to leave your car for the company to make all changes for you, then what should be just 4 tires changed becomes a snowball of things like suspension arms, supports, brakes, etc.. And then you leave with a bill 10 times higher than originally said.
I've always done my own maintenance. A few years back, my brakes started to squeal, so there was some urgency to change the pads. I bought a set and changed them that evening. While I had the wheels off, I noticed that the tyres were getting close to the end as well, so after putting in the new pads, I took it for new tyres the next day. The mechanic raised it on the jack, appeared to look behind the wheel, and said "Your brake pads need changing." I asked how bad they were, and he said "They're completely shot" (having driven all for 20 miles!) Needless to say, somebody else got the job of changing my tyres.

Ive even been fired from two jobs for being too honest with the customers! Guess what. Those customers followed me to my next place of work, and are now customers of my own business. Honesty has gotten me more business than any lies ever could, and i make sure to explain to my customers exactly what it is im doing and why, and even invite them to watch. When they cant hang around for the work, i make sure to photograph and video the work being done with before and after and send it to the customers so they know ive been honest and they all talk. AFTER looking at my truck in the shop, the tech came out to the office and told me that my air conditioner needed servicing. "That's funny.." I said ".. because this truck does not have air conditioning."
I had a similar experience. I have a 1963 Dodge D200. Shortly after getting it, I picked up a 4X4 "hulk" that had compatible parts -- a way to get a WD200 "on the cheap." A few months later, I notice some broken spring leaves on the front end, so I started the conversion early -- replacing the 2 wheel drive axle with the 4 wheel drive front end and associated springs... Later, in an attempt to be kind to me, my Bride took the truck to an "Oil Change Place" to get it serviced. They actually changed the oil, but when I looked at the bill, they had added a charge for "six pounds of gear lube to top up the transfer case." In this instance, they did not ask my wife for permission, they just charged her for the service. When they billed her, they told her they had added "transmission grease"; she did not spot the discrepancy until after she left the shop. When she got home, she immediately brought the problem to my attention and I had a follow up conversation with the Manager... Me: "So, tell me how you put 6 lbs of grease into my transfer case..." MGR: "Well, the technician checked the drip port on the side, saw it was down, and just pumped it in." Me: "Okay, sounds plausible -- but I'll be needing that technician's name so I can swear out a warrant for Burglary." MGR: "Burglary?" Me: "Yeah, given that he serviced the transfer case for that truck without permission, AND that the case is sitting on the floor of my garage, AND that my garage was locked when you serviced it, your technician would have had to defeat the locks and illegally enter my garage to perform the service... I do believe that constitutes Burglary..." MGR: [After looking under the truck and seeing there was, indeed, no transfer case] "Um, how about a refund?" Me: "Yeah, how about that?"
people keep saying, "do your own work on your own car." how about dont commit fraud and charge people for services that were never needed or performed? not everyone has the time to learn how or to actually service their vehicle, especially for services more difficult than a simple oil change. we shouldnt have to learn something on our own if others can do it for us legitimately.
That logic would also follow: "Don't ever eat at restaurants when you can make your own food." Being self sufficient is awesome, and it's a benefit to those who are; however, I for one would rather not live my life so distrustful of people that I can't have services done for me that I pay for.

great for her. not sure how that makes me a pussy though...i make 100 grand a year. 100$ per year on 2 oil changes isnt really breaking the bank for me lmao.
lets assume you do the minimum oil change requirement on all your cars over 50 years of driving. 30$ per change at 2 changes a year = 3,000$ over 50 years. i dont see how taking the time to do it yourself is really that much of a benefit to anything.
For a great deal of just $100 a tire! We’ll even throw in some free tire valve stem caps! Plus $50 per square inch of compressed air, because compressed air is really hard to come by these days. Also, your windshield washer fluid is blue, when it should be rose gold. It smells really burnt too.

I complete my own oil and oil filter changes on my '38 Chev coupe and my '67 Chev C-10 stepside pickup truck. Since i don't have a "lift," I have to use ramps to raise up the front end for access to the oil drain plugs. A tight squeeze, but at least I know that the cost will be only for the supplies, and I don't have to worry about screw-ups or outright fraud from oil-change shops. I took the truck to Econolube for lubrication several years ago. The oil was changed, but the technician failed to tighten the drain plug properly. Later that day while parked nearby in a large box store parking lot, I noticed a large puddle of oil beneath the truck. After checking the problem (a loose drain plug), I tightened it and added oil required to bring the level to the proper mark on the dipstick. Econolube or other oil change companies will never touch these classic vehicles again.

We made a multi-point inspection video, and also provided a video showing exactly where the hole in the tire was.) I feel like more shops should adopt this system.
Many dealerships do the same thing, especially charging you for work they haven't done. Thieves.

Always write on the work order: "I WANT MY OLD PARTS RETURNED BACK TO ME FOR MY INSPECTION!"
I used to have a brother-in-law who worked at a local repair shop and he would do many DISHONEST things to customers vehicles and I told him, one day he's gonna get caught..... well, I'm glad my sister divorced him before I ever found out if he did get caught.

@@dreameryoung38
Yes it's always best to find an ASE certified shop but many of them still try to sell you more than you need/want.
If a mechanic tells you-you need more, always get another opinion!
@@BugzBunnywazaHare thanks for the reply.

You can get a supertech 5w30 full synthetic API certified for $13.97, Castro on the other hand with the exact same certification costs $22.38. Castro claims it has better additive package but I personally put in my own additive so I don’t care who makes it as long as it is 5w30 and API certified.

Spot on advice man, that's what I do when I take my car for servicing.

“License as a garage mechanic” lol there’s no such thing, there’s certifications you go through
There isn't a "license" as a garage mechanic...
while there are certified mechanics, like Mr.
See, DD had a talent for selling people on the idea that 'hey, it's a big big desert, bad place to have your car screw up!."
That is exactly how he sold the engine overhaul to a car owner with 20k miles on the engine.
He already gets flogged by his wife.
The mechanic raised it on the jack, appeared to look behind the wheel, and said "Your brake pads need changing." I asked how bad they were, and he said "They're completely shot" (having driven all for 20 miles!)
Needless to say, somebody else got the job of changing my tyres.
I would've been furious.

BAHAHA they outdo themselves every time
Good one!!
Wow! That's chutzpah if I ever heard it!
Me: "So, tell me how you put 6 lbs of grease into my transfer case..."
MGR: "Well, the technician checked the drip port on the side, saw it was down, and just pumped it in."
Me: "Okay, sounds plausible -- but I'll be needing that technician's name so I can swear out a warrant for Burglary."
MGR: "Burglary?"
Me: "Yeah, given that he serviced the transfer case for that truck without permission, AND that the case is sitting on the floor of my garage, AND that my garage was locked when you serviced it, your technician would have had to defeat the locks and illegally enter my garage to perform the service... I do believe that constitutes Burglary..."
MGR: [After looking under the truck and seeing there was, indeed, no transfer case] "Um, how about a refund?"
Me: "Yeah, how about that?"

That logic would also follow: "Don't ever eat at restaurants when you can make your own food." Being self sufficient is awesome, and it's a benefit to those who are; however, I for one would rather not live my life so distrustful of people that I can't have services done for me that I pay for.
