  • In this video, we visit the most recent Alabama lottery. This lottery came as a surprise, so we question whether the whiskey/bourbon bubble is on a down trend. What are you thoughts on the whiskey market?

    My retailer is getting wise to the game. He will sell you just about any bottle he gets for retail or just over retail, if you're willing to go out in the parking lot and crack it open in front of him. That way, he knows you're not reselling it. Resellers, get charged substantially more.

      Everybody loves dusty old bottles, how are you going to get dusty old bottles if everybody drinks everything right away?
      Of course, my dusty bottle collection is mostly cheap, common stuff, grabbing a bunch of Santo Fino Tequila right now, before Sammy sells that like he did Cabo Wabo. Also grabbing more Plantation Rum before the new labels get into circulation.

    The issue I have is people charging 150-300 bucks for a 60-90 retail bottle. They aren’t worth it other than the name. Plenty of bottles out there for a reasonable price that’s just as good or better. I want a JD 12 bad, but I’m not paying 300. I can drive a little bit and find literally any bottle people are hunting. But they want stupid prices for it.

      @@Average_BourbonDadanother problem is every label and their Grandma are putting out "limited" special releases based on nothing but marketing that are clogging up shelves. The hype makes people/store owners think they have the next Pappy but customers are finally getting wise to this game.

      @Average_BourbonDad 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@javieracosta3439 well exactly. It’s up to consumers to do their due diligence. A company is going to try everything to sell their product and stand out. I’d do the same thing with my product. The consumer is ultimately the one who will decide. That’s why I started doing my own review channel mainly about Texas whiskey. Companies throwing a star or Texas theme on a bottle and calling it “Texas” whiskey but it’s distilled and barreled in California by a California company and only bottled in Texas. Be a smart consumer and these companies will go away.

    • @froochie123

      What do they do though? I agree with you whole heartedly but what is the solution. People stop buying won't ever happen, there are too many people. Liquor stores see people buying their stuff and instantly flipping it. There is a rock and a hard place for sure here and its tough not to get stuck between them.

    • @Average_BourbonDad
      @Average_BourbonDad 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@froochie123 Well and if someone is selling their product at double the profit, they won't reduce their price either. The consumer has to be the one to stand up. In much the same way as the consumer quit buying Bud Light, we have to quit paying $130 for EH Taylor and $100 for Sellers Reserve. The stores will eventually be forced to clear shelf space and lower those prices. Im starting to see Stellum, which is Barrell Craft, drop prices by 15% or more. Same with Old Elk. So I think there is a bit of consumer fatigue.

    I’m a new subscriber. I’ve drank whiskey/bourbons for years, but never dove into the deep end of the pool til watching your videos. I needed a new hobby…
    I guess I’m jumping in on top of the bubble, so I’d welcome a drop. I’ve seen the markups for sure. I live more rural so I expected a bit of markup, but I’ve seen the stores up-charging well over MSRP as said.
    It’s really true-the value of whiskey (or anything for that matter) is what someone’s willing to pay for it.
    If the distilleries cut back production it will most likely drive prices up even more on the unicorns.

    It would be nice if if things settled down a bit. I live in Oklahoma, and there are still very few Buffalo Trace products available around me. The regular Buffalo Trace used to be stacked 10 deep on the shelves here, and it was what I bought regularly. Blanton's was fairly common as well. Now the only BT products I can find anywhere close are Ancient Aged, Travellers, Sazerac Rye, and Benchmark 8. No Benchmark Full Proof or anything like that. I drove 60 miles round trip earlier today to get a Weller Special Reserve at MSRP just to try it. It was a tiny store, and they didn't have any of the other BT stuff. I'm never after anything all that pricey, and there are plenty of good bottles out there. However, it would be nice to see the familiar labels around again.

Blanton's is the #1 most disappointing bottle I have ever purchased for $135, and I'd argue it's not even worth 1/2 that price because the store pick standard BT for $27.99 beat it in a blind. The craze isn't dead yet. I was in Kentucky the week before Easter. BT had 500 plus in line on a Sunday morning for Eagle Rare before opening. I was at Heaven Hill on Saturday morning and there were over 60 in line before it opened (got super lucky to get two bottles of EC18). Every distillery I hit had heavy consumer activity. The distilleries are still getting heavy traffic in March when it's cold. I live in Chicago and any BT products that's are on the shelves at the larger liquor stores is gone in 24hours for MSRP. The secondary market on the other hand is slowing down. People are catching on to what a ripoff the prices are.

    In addition, tequila and rums are starting to get more popular. People are starting to move into other things. I hope it continues this direction because it would be nice to start getting some bottles for more reasonable prices in the future.

I think limiting purchases for people by having them create an account with the place to earn points or however they want to do it to insure the same person isnt getting more than allowed seems better than a lottery. IDK maybe I'm wrong yet a lottery is nuts to me because the same person can hit the lottery everyday in theory. Unlikely but could.

    I think for Buffalo trace products though they’re sitting on the shelves at their marked up prices. It may be the economy but it also I think is the consumers just realize it’s not a $150 to $300 bourbon.

    Been building my whiskey stash for the past 6 years, enjoying nursing the collection, but kind of got burned out about 6 months ago. Was a cross between realizing how much money I've spent, and just wanted to put the brakes on it just a bit. Now I'm watching YT vids again and surprised that 1792 FP suddenly is a hot item, that was fairly common and reasonably priced only a year ago in my neck of the woods, and can't say I recall people being too excited about it when I picked up a bottle. Most of that release list has me scratching my head, very surprising to see a lot of those on a list, like seriously Micther's Sour Mash, really? One of my favs that I rarely have difficulty finding.

    I dont think the bubble is going to bust entirely but with the economy being the way it is people are cutting down spending. Another big factor is tha a person only needs so many bottles, once you have a couple of a certain bottle, you're not really going to be chasing for more nor paying secondary. I think that especially applies to bottles like Blantons, Eagle Rare ect.

    I mean one thing is high prices for limited release stuff like Four Roses Small Batch LE, that they only make a certain number of, but things like regular old BT should not be much above MSRP. How some bourbons or scotch can demand in the thousands if not more is insane imo. Yes, looking at you Macallan M. Just nuts, and I'm willing to bet that most can't taste the difference between something super expensive, and something a bit more down to earth from the same distillery.
    Prices world wide is very high right now, and yes, some distilleries have more demand than they can make, so prices on what's available will be higher because of that, and that's fair, but for something that's mass produced like BT or JD there's no exuse imo for the high prices.

    It sounds like distributors are sitting on record inventories and it's only a matter of time before they have to let stuff hit the market. Now that might not mean everything becomes available but I get the feeling the hoarding is hitting its capacity. You can only have so many hundreds of bottles in your house before it stops making sense to buy more.
