    Kor not only got into to stovokor. He died so honorably that martok was able to let go of the past and and honor him as a klingon warrior should be honored. A very deep scene.

      Established in TOS, Klingons use to just be another one dimensional enemy in Star Trek, but I love ❤️ the way multiple Star Trek series from TNG to DS9 to even Voyager took the time to flesh out there culture, values and beliefs.
      Then you see a episode like this, especially that ending, and you can’t help to fall in love with the Klingons as they sing to honor their fallen comrade as one crew and one ship paying tribute through song and story.
      Simply brilliant as I wipe a tear from my eye as I want to sing along with them without knowing a word of Klingon.

      Or perhaps he was reflecting. Realizing that a man he had made fun of, and embarrassed in the mess hall, just a few days, or even a few hours ago, that man had just saved his life. He'd already spoken with Worf, earlier, saying that he took no joy from humiliating Kor. He realized that he hadn't taken down a great enemy, all he'd done was bully an old man, who had the misfortune to outlive his glory. And now, he owes that man his life, and that's debt that can never be repaid. Thinking about all that tends to take you out of a singing mood.

    • @ShadowDragon8685
      @ShadowDragon8685 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@specialk9424 He was reflecting alright, but it was very specifically about the dichotomy of hating Kor, but holding him in the _highest_ of respect.
      Remember, Kor back in the day conspired to _keep_ Matok from joining the Empire's military, all because Martok, though he had proven himself a brilliant cadet applicant, was a commoner and Kor was as blue-blooded as the duke of Wellington. He'd prevented Martok from even joining as a common soldier! Kor honor-blocked Martok when he was a young man, forcing him to slide into the Klingon military through the service hatch as a cook, when he should have graduated from their equivalent of Starfleet Academy as a top-in-class, promote-before-peers.
      Martok _hated_ Kor as badly as a Klingon _can_ hate another _without_ needing to go and kill them and go to Sto-Vo-Kor in the process.
      And yet too, everything you said was true; he *had* seen Kor at his lowest, in the grips of a moment of senility, and belittled him for it. Yet there was no satisfaction in it. And then he saw Kor earn himself a Warrior's death in the most glorious way possible, picking a ridiculously many-to-one fight, a hopeless battle, fighting a glorious delaying action so everyone else could make it back. He owed his _life_ to Kor, but _more importantly to Martok_ than owing his own, personal hide to that pompous old man, the lives of all who _followed_ Martok he owed to Kor, and the _ships'_ survival save the _Ning-Tao,_ and the future service all of those ships and personnel would give to the _Empire,_ Martok _owed to Kor._
      _None of that_ could wipe away what Kor did to him when he was a young man and Kor honor-blocked his career, it couldn't wipe away how much he, personally, loathed him; but he would be the _first_ to tell you that Kor died _gloriously_ in the service of the Empire.
      Martok _hates_ Kor, and he still hates him even after he died; that's why Martok does not sing for him. But Martok respects Kor's service and ultimate sacrifice to the Empire, and Martok would shower him in his (deserved) glory for it, unlike a pettier man (like, say, young Kor, or Gowron), who would have sought to minimize it to deny Kor his due. He _respects_ Kor, but he cannot like him. So _he_ won't sing for him, but he raises the bottle and commands everyone who *does* love Kor to sing for him.

    • @Ares99999
      @Ares99999 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@specialk9424 I prefer the idea that Martok honored the warrior (thus the toast) but refused to honor the man (hence staying silent during the song). I don't think Martok sees himself as owing Kor a thing. After all, Kor refused to let Martok become an officer not because Martok was unfit, but because Kor was an elitist.
      The main reason Martok remained resentful was that Martok's father, who he clearly loved dearly, worked really hard to find Martok a sponsor, then had to live with the shame of the refusal, and then died before Martok could prove his valor. Martok's beloved father died disappointed.
      Note that Kor was still not sorry about what he did when Worf confronted him with his lack of fairness. Instead, he launched into a subdued but still really elitist speech. Kor clearly still saw Martok as 'lesser'.
      I don't see how Kor being old gives him a free pass for past wrongs. I think Martok was amazing for reaching a compromise where Kor is concerned: honor the warrior, but never forgive the man.

    This gives us the Klingons how we love them, gives us a Klingon legacy character, it allows us a look on how Klingons deal with getting old and outliving their own legend, as well as giving a legendary warrior a worthy goodby - AWESOME!
    I still get teary eyed when the Rotarran officer narrates Kor's fight against the Jem'Hadar fleet, his victory and demise, and the following moments when the Klingon crew that ridiculed old Kor starts singing to his honor. Damn, I'm getting teary eyed just writing about it right now!😢

      There's a storytelling rule called 'show, don't tell.' On one hand, this would appear to avert that rule by not showing the battle, but that's not the point of the story. Begrugingly, Martak denies Kor's initial request for a command. However, Martok let Kor be on his ship as 3rd Officer. If he didn't Worf would've joined Jadzia in Sto,Vor,Kor. Kor would've been a forgotten warrior in Klingon history. Worf was a good friend to Kor. In return Kor, saves his life and dies a glorious death worthy of song.

    One of the many scenes that continuously reminds me how much I love the klingons and specifically how DS9 as a series truly did justice to the race through beautiful scenes like this. Also note how they didnt SHOW the battle that Kor did at the end, because there is no need to. The characters did not know what happened, and neither should we, and Worf puts it perfectly: does it matter? No. He takes one last stand as the Daha Master to reclaim his honor among the crew, and his legend will be passed on for generations.

      That may be true, but I think they should have had recordings of the battle. It would show how they did it and inspire future warriors to learn to fly and fight as Kor and his crew did.
      There was a line from the CGI animated series War Planets that I think would apply perfectly to Kor, Kang, and Koloth: "You died as you lived - gloriously. The universe will never know your like again."

    That song, simple things like that just further added to the Trek universe and the beauty of it's many cultures.

    One of the moving and power Star Trek episodes ever produced and performed. The ending never fails to cause tears of joy to well up. Well done DS9 creators!!!

    The Jem Hadar ARE formidable, but they never fought a Da'Har master before. This makes my heart SING!!!

    This is what makes Martok different, yes he holds grudges like many Klingons do - but he is willing to see past them! Hell, he said he wouldn't even give Kor rubbish ("...bones of my last meal..."), but he changes his mind here!

    It is important to remember: Kor won. Kor achieved his objective, in fact, Kor surpassed any reasonable expectation in achieving his objective. The Jem'hadar might have killed an enemy that day, but they went home failures, the losers of the battle. Kor won.
