    Marc Alaimo (rightfully) gets a lot of props for his portrayal of Dukat, but let's give some love to Casey Biggs as Damar. His arc, from Dukat's right-hand man to disillusioned drunk to revolutionary hero is remarkable at every turn. His "how can we fail?" response here and his "resist today, resist tomorrow" speech are something we would never expect from a Cardassian: inspirational.

And in terms of power the Warbird was probably the largest and most powerful in the quadrant at that point, at least among the "allies". Yet anytime you see them in these sequences they're either just moving along or getting pummeled by enemy fire.

    • @oldtwinsna8347

      Maybe they were just crap? Most of the D'Deridex class was just empty space, to make them look more menacing than actually powerful. That tactic may have worked during the time of Federation or Klingon incursions, where traditional large scale war never happened. But they got exposed during the Dominion war. May explain why the Valdore class got developed - an actual combat worthy ship that could be deployed.

    • @FH-cn3mg
      @FH-cn3mg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The one thing about the Romulans is that most of their technology is about ambush tactics. They hit you with an overwhelming first strike right out of cloak and then finish you off. When you're rocking up with stealthy first strike ships and they're going against heavily armed ships of the line and corvette type ships that are built specifically to get blown up but pack a huge punch with squadron style tactics, that's going to just overwhelm a ship like a warbird.
      I think the only reason the Federation fared slightly better is the cloaking ban. They had to have better shielding and weapons because they would have to endure first strikes out of cloak from both Klingons and Romulans. Which necessarily makes you have to build a slightly tanky-er ship that can survive that initial onslaught and still put up a fight. Plus the Federation had been fighting the Dominion for longer and were better equipped via experience to deal with their combat tactics.

    • @Archedgar
      @Archedgar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@kerryedavis Actually the defiant class was pretty ill suited for war in the lore.
      As far as I know, it was specifically designed to be used in swarm combat against Borg cubes to exploit the cube's inability to properly adapt to entire swarms of small vessels all rotating frequencies. The defiant class was explicitly stated to not be designed to engage in fleet-to-fleet battles and that's why it could punch above its weight class but was 'glass canon fodder' at best.

    Deep Space Nine to this day has been the only star trek I have watched 100% of the way through, if not more than 20x at this point rewatching it, and its because of character depth like this, I spent a lot of time disliking a handful of characters like Damar, Nog and Rom to name a few, characters I eventually through the shows deep story telling abilities, came to love in the end, its a damn shame people constantly bicker over if Picard or Kirk is better, when clearly the choice is right in front of our faces, it was always SIsko in my opinion, then again they do all have their own merits as Captains.

      When _TNG_ was being produced, the number of _Galaxy-class_ ships was about a dozen-or-so, including the prototype _Galaxy_ herself and the _Enterprise-D._ (If I remember correctly, all of them are named in the non-canon _Star Trek The Next Generation: Technical Manual._ )
      It was _DS9_ that made the number of _Galaxy-class_ ships skyrocket to uncountable numbers due to budget constraints and reuse of footage; they didn't have the money or time to develop many more 24th Century-looking ships that didn't look like blatant kitbashes (I'm looking at you, _Jaeger-class_ ...)

      1st appearance Klingons = War
      1st appearance Romulans = War
      1st appearance Ferengi = War
      1st appearance Borg = War
      1st appearance Cardassians = War

      @@johnlavery3433 The thought occurred to me that the Galaxy-class starship wouldn't be my first choice of ship of which to send a fleet for a battle... it's just so big that it's an easy target to hit/ram, and doesn't maneuver as well as a smaller ship. Granted a Galaxy has pretty good firepower, deflector shields, and is pretty fast. A really good exploration / diplomacy ship, just not as good a battleship.

    Can we just have a moment of respect for Nog? He can pilot a ship like no other, and had his father Rom's Engineering and computer skills. If this is what the Ferengi can become, then they will be a HUGE asset to the Federation. Similar to the Muuns of Muunlist in the Star Wars Universe. Ferenginar is one of the wealthiest planets and with its massive connections and networks for supplies, it can be the "Banking Clan" for Federation ventures throughout the galaxy.
    But, as Rom and Nog have proven, the Ferengi do have very advanced scientific minds. Although they don't like to advertise as their (nerds) are considered against the Rules of Acquisition. Basically "You don't make it, you buy the one that makes it". But there are Ferengi scientists (The one who created metaphasic shielding,) Dr. Reyga. And they also are valuable to the Borg as facilitators as they are immune to telepathic abilities, and have incredible hearing.

    I remember seeing DS9’s last few episodes when they first aired. Coincidentally, I was studying WWII in high school history class at the time. I called the battle for Cardassia “D-Day In Space” or “Normandy In Space”. The parallels are inescapable - the massive invasion fleets, the last stand of a fortified enemy, and a nation that had fallen to a collaborationist government finally being liberated by citizens fighting in bombed-out city streets. The Founder’s order to “eradicate the Cardassians” even echoes Hitler’s infamous query to his generals in France: “Is Paris burning?!”
    I also found it interesting that the DS9 writers gave the Cardassians, who had brutally occupied Bajor like the Nazis did to Europe, and drove Federation citizens in their border space to form a latter-day “Marquis” underground resistance, a bitter taste of what it felt like to be persecuted outlaws in their own homeland. I’m sure many people in that production room had a keen grasp of history, and knew that at least some of the fans would appreciate those historical themes.

      TheLocutus70 It’s funny, after Starfleet adapted their shields to resist Dominion weapons, their ships were actually better one for one than the Dominion ships. Excusing their massive battle ships ect... the Excelsior and Miranda class ships made solid cruisers and Frigates.
      The Dominion was feared due the massive amount of solid ships that can be rebuilt in seconds compared to the Federation Alliance ships. Plus the breeding of Jem’Hadar legions was relatively quick. All the while backed up by a rebuilt and improved Cardassian Union.
