The Gauls (Carnyx Theme; Phrase from 'La Brabançonne') 0:00 - Ancient Era 3:18 - Medieval Era 7:20 - Industrial Era 12:02 - Atomic Era About this Piece: Unfortunately, not much is known about the musical culture of the Gauls, but a prominent feature of all Celtic music was the Carnyx, a brass instrument that saw use in warfare, most likely as a means to rally troops and intimidate enemies. Usually, the end of the Carnyx would be fashioned into an animal's head, most likely a boar, but other animals were depicted as well. Interestingly enough, Gallic musical traditions may have been brought into the Greek/Byzantine empires, and Charlemagne was even mentioned to have commissioned a series of Gallic songs, which have not been found as of yet. However, even though the music of the Gauls has long been lost to time, the Belgians fondly remember them and Ambiorix as national heroes, hence the musical reference to the Belgian anthem, "La Brabançonne". You can hear it most clearly between 13:43 to 13:56, which references the chorus of the anthem "Le roi, la loi, la liberté! / Voor Vorst, voor Vrijheid en voor Recht! / Gesetz und König und die Freiheit hoch!" (Sources: Wikipedia and Pablo R. Sepúlveda's comment on Peaches Lamb's Gaul Atomic Theme video)
