  • Dr. Rajsree Nambudripad, MD is board-certified in Internal Medicine and founder of OC Integrative Medicine in Orange County, California. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) presents with symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn, and laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). What are some of the long term side effects of over-the-counter acid blocking medications like Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)? In this video, she explains the main ROOT causes of GERD and then explains her 7 Step Protocol to naturally heal your GERD symptoms. She distinguishes Acid Reflux from Non-Acid Reflux. What are some acute treatments you can use for instant relief of GERD symptoms? Finally she explains her strategy for successfully weaning off a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI).

    What a gem you are. I listen to many fun tional medicine podcast and have for many years. I wish i was able to afford the cost of the visits. I have suffered for 3 years with ulcers, gerd, and now an esophageal stricture. I am unable to eat and the gasternologist says all he can do is prescribe ppi. I dont even take it trying to heal myself via utube videos. Such a sad ,sad healthcare system we have that will only write scripts and keep you sick rather than help me find the root cause and heal. I live in Atlanta and am curious if your office accepts health insurance or are you private pay? Please keep posting these videos so that we may continue to be informed about our health.

    I wish I had found you a year ago as I was weaning off PPI’s, however, through extensive research of my own, I have come to almost an identical conclusion as your presentation here in.
    Thank you for confirming this path.
    Ps, as part of my daily routine, I had tried probiotics but they caused great discomfort with excess gas, belching, pressure in upper digestive tract. As of 2 weeks ago, I stopped only the probiotics and am feeling much better. I believe the probiotics were exacerbating SIBO type effects of bloating, excess gas build up in stomach and esophagus etc.
    Dairy is my trigger and have to read ingredient lists of any prepared foods. Quitting smoking 1.5 years ago drastically reduced GERD along with chewing a DGL tablet 20 minutes before each meal then digestive enzymes and nutritional yeast with the meal. Standing and walking after a meal helps immensely too.
    Thank you for such informative presentations and the path to healing.

    I have a question regarding MCAS/histamine intolerant patients with GERD who undergo your SIBO treatment protocol. Since high histamine levels cause an overproduction of stomach acid, wouldn’t betaine HCL supplementation cause worsening of reflux symptoms? Should these patients omit your Betaine with Pepsin and Digestive Enzyme Pro supplements while undergoing SIBO treatment? MCAS patients often take H2 blockers to reduce stomach acid, so increasing stomach acid seems counterintuitive. Thanks!

    • @drrajsree
      @drrajsree  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question. Actually Digestive Enzymes are universally well tolerated. Betaine and Pepsin can be tried and if there is any burning, that means you don't need it.

    Many functional health practitioners claim that GERD is mostly due to insufficient stomach acid; that the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) fails to close when the ph level is too high. They claim that acidifying the stomach with betaine hydrochloride will alert the LES to close properly, thus cutting off the flow of acid into the esophagus. I have been unable to locate any medical literature that confirms this. What are your thoughts regarding the connection between stomach acidity level and LES function?

    • @drrajsree
      @drrajsree  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question. In general undigested foods can often trigger LES to open up. As I mentioned in the video non-acid reflux is quite common, mimicing acid reflux. By supplementing with Digestive Enzymes and Betaine and Pepsin, the food gets broken down better and doesn't come back up the esophagus.

      There is no way these are unrelated. Your IBS and GERD are a result from SIBO. Mycotoxin intoxication is extremely overdiagnosed in the naturopath world. It’s probably just SIBO.

    Hello Doctor,
    Thanks for this amazing video
    I have histamine intolerance along with hydrogen dominant sibo.
    I have crazy acid reflux and vomits due to trigger.i am taking ppi for very long to control the symptoms but they are backfiring now.
    I wanted to understand if I follow the SIBO protocol can I take ppi along with it too?
    How do I deal with this situation
    As I cannot sleep till I have one dose of ppi.
    If I am following my SIBO protocol how do I deal with histamine intolerance?

    • @drrajsree
      @drrajsree  หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is tough because PPIs can set you up for SIBO relapse. Ideally you want to work with a doctor to see if the PPI could be weaned off if possible before treating the SIBO so that you have a successful treatment without relapse. Treating the SIBO will help the histamine intolerance.

      @@drrajsreeactually what I feel is I have histamine intolerance due to which I have to take ppi.
      I have histamine intolerance due to SIBO.
      If I have to wean off PPI I really need to work on histamine intolerance and sibo as without working on them
      Maybe Removing ppi isn’t possible.
      Also the diet on SIBO isn’t well tolerated basically if I eat anything fibrous,fermented,millet the acid becomes really very high.
      Also even if the acid is in control the gases trouble and make nauseous and gives irritation and headache.
      Once I have a ppi things get in control.
      I don’t understand how do I overcome this😞😞
      Every time I try follow a wean off protocol this happens.
      Is there something that can work with here? Or any plan that I can follow.

    Your comment about intestinal metaplasia being a pre-cancerous situation(if I got it rightly)is pretty scary. I had H-pylori infection for little more than 2 years which got eradicated after 2 rounds of antibiotics and still have mild gastritis and acid reflux even after that. I have been trying hard to heal myself by controlling the diet and with different types of treatment after that - Homeopathy, Ayurveda etc which has not given me a cure yet. I am just able to manage the symptoms to a good extent. I am always sacred of the risk of cancer. Not sure how much at rish I am right now.

    I've been dealing with heartburn to some degree or another for years. I've always seen naturopathic type doctors, so never took meds or Tums, etc. I just keep my diet as clean as possible and have done food allergy tests and avoiding the wheat/dairy/soy. And other things you mention to manage. But it's still very problematic. I will do your multi-step protocol. However, I have a question: I have been using baking soda and water for years whenever it gets worse. But I take way more than a quarter teaspoon. More like a teaspoon, sometimes a bit more. Is this dangerous? Thanks!!!
