knowing the context for “When Will I Return?” makes it an even more harrowing song than it already is. the female vocalist is M. Gira’s wife, and her lyrics describe her experience of rape. the way the track is put together, delivered and just overall made is absolutely amazing. incredible song, and an immensely incredible album as a whole. glad you finally got to it

The Glowing Man is THE definitive Swans reunion album, IMO. Without exaggeration, I've heard it over 300 times. Heard it daily for a few years from 2016-2018. A super mysterious album that just benefits from continuous relistens. The Cloud of Unknowing is a masterpiece, and then you get the title track which is some of the best collection of sounds my ears have ever heard.

  • @ozzy6771
    @ozzy6771 ปีที่แล้ว +29

What I love most about the title track is how upon first listen, it seems to be incredibly repetitive, like they keep playing the same thing over and over again. In a way, it is, but what really struck me on relistens is how subtle this track and the album in general is. Through the absolute mammoth walls of sound and noise, are these little details and changes that you can easily miss on first listen, because it is genuinely overwhelming. But when you sit and let the noise swallow you, you pick up on those little gems in the production. I absolutely adore the use of piano in particular, and how it accentuates the final pounding moments before the heavenly ascension of the outro. Just a masterpiece in every sense. The production, the arrangement, the performances of everyone in the band, just staggering. It’s a genuine fucking achievement of humanity.

You have consistently been one of my favorite music youtubers to follow. Your takes and insights are incredibly thoughtful, to the point where I was just yelling 'yes!' at the screen as you were describing the vibes of each song. It's really hard to find Swans fans IRL or even online so your reaction videos have been like an oasis in the desert. Thank you, sincerely.

Listening to this live was, no joke, a life-shaking experience. I feel lucky to have seen Swans live in 2017, absolute geniuses. The title track is orgasmically good, like....you're ascending into heaven in a trial-by-fire and you reach infinity good.

This is my personal favorite from the trilogy. I actually really like the first part of Frankie M. That shit makes me feel like I'm levitating to Valhalla. Also what you said at 36:40 is exactly how I feel. The 10-14 minute mark of Bring the Sun might be my favorite moment in music, but The Glowing Man is just so consistently pummelling, and that's what makes it my favorite song of all time.

So yeah now it's the disturbing fire and brimstone apocalypse of the monumental masterpiece Soundtracks for the Blind. It's gonna blow your mind to smithereens. It is no joke. The impenetrable heaviness and creepiness and sheer beauty and melancholy unpredictability and scope of that album is indescribable black magic. So prepare your psyche- it's gonna damage your soul(but in the best way). When I bought that album after it came out I was left speechless and astonished. It drained my soul and left me in silent awe. The impact of that album never left me and it lingers in my heart like a ghost. Can't wait for you to experience it. So how about tackling the undisputed masters of avant noise and untuned destruction and beauty Sonic Youth? That band burned the rulebook and made up their own. They are untouchable pioneers and unmatched to this day. You will fall in love I guarantee you. Especially after doing Unwound and liking them so much. And do Unwound's Fake Train album too. Love yr reactions... J

so after digging through your vids (and loving them, your reminding me of when i fell down the post rock rabbit hole myself) i have decided what i want to recommend. i’m sure you have a million albums to listen to but for me, this is the only one that could ever stand up to the legacy that Godspeed and Swans left on me.
    “You Are There - Mono”.
Mono is my favorite post rock band (skinny fists still gets #1 album but barely haha) and this is my favorite Mono record. I’m not kidding when i say the closing track will probably ruin your life in the best way. it’s my favorite song of all time.

    Fantastic reaction and review Snowy.
Recently I found myself becoming very familiar with Swans' big three two hour long albums, having listened to them I guess over hundred times each.
I have now found myself recently watching the many live videos of Swans performing , that are available online via TH-cam. I have the DVDs but no player currently, and TH-cam is adequate for the moment.
But , I'm not so sure yet which would be the Best live video to react to if that's something that you fancy.
I hope that people reading my comments who are far more familiar might suggest the best one. It does take a long time to watch all of the live material, and i like to absorb music and art naturally without taking notes or trying to contrast and compare, so I guess that it's going to take me several months to get that familiar to make a suggestion.
To make the task easier, i made a start a few days ago with collecting live Swans videos from TH-cam. There's a playlist on my TH-cam channel called "Swans live things" people could use to start off their own playlist if they fancied getting into their concerts. Currently it has 17 videos, which includes some longer ones, and one short one where Gira looses temper with the amplification misbehaving.
Swans are so great to watch live in concert that it's something that you shouldn't miss out on!
Respect and best wishes From England.

@@snowy6301 Lmao thanks dude, your reactions are great and just perfectly sum up how I feel about this band. It honestly reminds me of my first time discovering Swans. Oh also I have a pretty funny story when it comes to this album. The first time I was trying edibles I made a playlist to listen to and it had three main albums, The Dark Side of the Moon, The Mollusk, and The Glowing Man. Anyway, I fell asleep during The Mollusk, specifically during Ocean Man, and when I woke up, it was around the 10:35 mark in Cloud of Unknowing. Those vocal crescendos pulled me up into the heavens and for a split second I swear, I was the glowing man. Anyway, great reaction and I love your channel, keep up the good work and the even better vibes!

You need to react to Deliquescence, their live album from 2017. There are some previously unreleased songs, some re-interpretations from To Be Kind and The Glowing Man, and it of course has the brilliant 'The Knot', maybe the finest piece Swans have ever played live.

Grado SR 80x are great for this type of music as well. Im rocking them right now and they sound so clear. I can hear Michael Gira breathing into the microphone in one song. The base is not as pronounced but it is very saturated, you can hear every frequency. The sound stage is big, you can hear where the sound is coming from if the mix is done right. Overall great headphones. Can't recommend them enough. They cost 125$.
