  • ARE YOU USING THE WRONG SHAFTS IN ALL YOUR GOLF CLUBS!? We all know that using the right golf shaft in your golf clubs is vitally important. But which shafts should you use in your irons? what driver shaft should you use? which is theist driver shaft to hit longer drives? should you use stiff shafts or regular shafts? what's the difference between stiff vs regular shafts? what about expensive exotic shafts? expensive golf shafts? expensive upgrade shafts? what is the best shafts for mid handicap golfers? is there such a thing in this video myself and Gary talk you guys through exactly what to look for when picking which shafts to use in your golf clubs... let's do it... and let's do it now!

      In 2019 Cobra offered a tour length which was a 1/2" shorter. It was considered a stock shaft, but had to be ordered from Cobra.

    Absolutely right on point lads!!!! I have used a 44" Driver, 42" 3W, and I have my 3H&4H cut down to 1/2" longer than standard 3iron and 4iron lengths. I have never seen a change in distance, but, my control has went from a "push-draw" to being able to play a slight-cut, and a slight-draw whenever I please (obviously I have mis-hits as we all do). Great topic and info guys, take care.

    I agree 100%. Most amateurs are using to long of a driver shaft I feel. I bought a new G400 driver couple years ago had it cut down to 43 1/2 length and it was the best decision I did. I’m hitting way more fairways and has helped my score drop. Great video ⛳️🏌️‍♂️

    One of the best explanations about shafts that I’ve ever seen. I didn’t realize that Tiger’s driver shaft was that short. Wow! My last two drivers have been 44” and my ball striking has improved a lot. I haven’t lost any length because I’m hitting the center of the face more consistently. Thanks for a great video!

    This is a great conversation as it can be overwhelming for most people with the number of options available now. Weight in combination with stiffness seems to be important. I would love to see a test for iron shafts comparing an KBS Tour V X-Flex with a Dynamic Gold S300 as an example. I bet the S300 is as stiff as the X-Flex.

    Totally agree in shaft lengths for drivers! I've always seem to hit my 3 wood as far and definitely straighter then the matching driver, that's shaft's about an inch longer in length! So many times, I've been tempted to get the hacksaw out and whack off that extra inch! Wish I could do so without ruining the grip, I'd have done exactly that, long ago!

    Great video!!! As a fitter, I can attest to the fact that drivers and fairways are simply too long nowadays for the average to novice golfer to control. Companies are so tied up in generating club head speed and ball speed that they are kinda forgetting that most of the people buying these off the rack are shooting high 80s and up and most will never come close to swinging 105mph.

    You are 100% correct 45.75 inches is ridiculously long for a "standard length". Most specialized fitters say 45 suits the largest percentage of people. Getting a new driver this season and looking forward to trying shorter shafts to improve my strike consistency.

    I was in two minds about whether to watch a video about shafts but I'm glad I did. A huge amount of useful information here. Sometime ago I decided I wanted to try a heavier shaft, so my club pro gave me something to test. As soon as I picked it up I wondered if it was the right length because it felt so short. It turned out to be 1 inch shorter than I was used to (but still 44.5 in). I ended up buying it because it felt so much better, gave me straighter results and was longer!

    Awesome, awesome video James. Love the tech talk regarding shafts. I grapple with a similar debate on the upcharge for exotic shafts. From my experience, I was fitted to a $400 LAPG shaft for my SIM and it was a spin generating disaster from someone who swings the driver 115-117mph and smashes at 1.48/1.49. I went back to an Adila Rogue for a quarter of the price and have produced monumentally better results.

    Total agree about shafts too long for the driver. I bought the Callaway BB fusion with the 44 1/2 " shaft when it came out and love it.
    I find the same frustration with the 5 and 7 woods now. The 3 woods all seem to stay at 43" but the 5 wood used to be 42 and is now 42 1/2 and the 7 woods were 41" and are now 42 and sometimes as with callaways new ones 42 1/4". It was a lot easier to control and get a good strike with the shorter shafts!

      @@garymartingolf That would be interesting to see one cut down live...and the adjustments you need to make the swing weight back to the same...
      if that is what you prefer.
      I talked to the guy at True Temper and he said you need to add approx 3 grams of lead tape to the head for every 1/2 inch cut off to make the swing weight the same. If you have a swing weight machine it would be cool to see that in action as well and maybe verify how much weight is needed to make the same swing weight for the club !

    For a number of years I could hit a three wood as far as my driver. This was purely because I could swing faster and know that I would hit the ball. With an all out swing my timing was rubbish with the driver and sometimes have air shots.

    I changed from stiff to regular in my driver 3 years ago and the results were amazing. More fairways and more distance. This year I went with regular R55 Kubuki shafts in my new Tour Edge Hot Launch C522 irons. So far I've only been able to hit balls off the back deck into the woods in me back yard. Really impressed with the feel and the flight. Won't know for sure until the frigging snow melts. Driver is cut down 1 inch and irons are half an inch longer than standard.

    Shafts is such a great conversation, its so common for people to be "forced" into poor fits.
    As a +1 hcap, I play lightweight stiff shafts in all my irons, and a regular flex in my driver, all driven by the feel which helps my delivery. If I go to any fittings, its so common for the fitters to try and fit me into standard weighted shafts (it never works for me in the long term).

    There has been a massive upgrade in the quality shaft offerings from the OEM’s this season. For example Taylor Made SIM 2 with the Tensei Raw and the Project X RDX and a Cobra Rad Speed with the New Fujikura Motore Shafts. Excellent shaft offerings available when you purchase from retail and club pro outlets so there is less of a desire to upgrade to an aftermarket shaft.

    I struggle with light iron shafts, having worked on the tools for over 40 years I suppose I have relatively strong forearms, as you rightly said hitting to centre of a club and especially the driver is key. Amateurs like myself will use far more of the club face compared to yourself so shorter may equal similar distance but straighter 👍

    Watched this video and prompted me to check swing speed into a net with a launch monitor. Turned out i was barely slower with my 2 hybrid (which i use in place of a 3 wood) than my driver (97mph average vs 99 mph average). I play a Tensei Blue AV 75 Stiff in the driver. Had an old driver from my beginner days with a lighter 55g regular hanging around so popped that shaft in my gamer, swing speed jumped to 110mph straight away (control was another matter). Once lockdown is over i am definitely off for a new fit on the driver shaft as if i can get that speed with a shaft i can control that could be a game changer! Cheers guys.

    Great video. I've always had trouble keeping drivers on the planet. The only reliable "driver" I ever owned was an old George Nicol persimmon-headed ladies' driver (had Henry Cotton's "signature" on the baseplate), which I found in a bargain barrel and reshafted with a Dynalite "S" 42 inch shaft. I hit it really well, and long, nearly all the time with a baby draw; in fact I used it as a fairway wood as well as a driver. Eventually, it gave up the ghost. The insert kept coming out and eventually it cracked just behind the insert. I wish I could find something else like it.

The reason is alot of people buy them as a unnecessary upgrade like you mention but in my case and a good few of my friends also we have very high swing speed and the TX flex version are all usually only in the aftermarket selection, but its only a very small percentage that have no choice to buy the aftermarket shafts for correct flex .

    hi James, put my 3 wood shaft in my driver just to try it out. dispersion improved, maybe lost couple of yards. had 1 inch taken off driver shaft, still longer than 3 wood, distance increase through better contact and good dispersion. next fitting will definitely try shorter shaft.

    Great video, I research the sh*t out of the tech of golf, sometimes annoy my friends lol. But, they are actually starting to listen to me. I know the kick point stuff, the flex stuff, and know a little about the torque. I have a TS2 with a 45 or 50g reg flex, and like 7.? Torque. What does the higher torque actually do for the swing, close the face easier/ quicker? I have a ball speed on a good strike about 148, I’ve hit 270-280 yard (total) drives. But they don’t really get up in the air. Maybe carry 220-230 at best, then run forever.

    • @Harryjones05
      @Harryjones05 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The torque of a shaft is actually the "twisting resistance" of a shaft during the swing... It can affect how a shaft feels in terms of harshness as well, high torque like 7° will mean it'll feel quite smooth where as a torque of say 2.8° like the big boys play will feel harsher... It all depends what you want from a shaft, torque will generally be lower for faster swingers as it resists twisting better(clubface kept squarer)... I swing around 105mph and like a shaft generally 3° torque, also so many other factors involved as well....

    • @rbjackpotslots4842
      @rbjackpotslots4842 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Harryjones05 not sure what I swing, but ball speed average around 140-145. Don’t know smash though to do the calculation, if I had to guess I would say 95 mph, just calculated a couple smash factor numbers....maybe 100 mph, which at 50 years old don’t think it’s too bad

    What advice would you give to a beginner golfer whose just getting into the game in regards to a shaft flex in both driver and irons?

  • @pedroc6823
    @pedroc6823 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you shorten a shaft you completely change the dynamics of the shaft. Take that into consideration. When I got fitted for my driver I was asked about my driver shaft length. I lost about 15 yards and trajectory was low, but it went straighter. After my fitting I got the same shaft with a weaker flex and a lower flex point to regain my height and distance.
    Don't just cut a shaft, get fitted for the shorter shaft.

    Yeah I play a shorter driver thinks it’s 44.5” and I’m so much more consistent with it. Just got a SIM 2 but the length of that is 45.75” so gonna have to shorten the ventus black shaft. Not sure if it’s best to tip it a little or just cut it off the grip end. I also found in previous fittings that the weight of the shaft was more important than the stated flex.

      You hitting it on the toe? Getting hooks?
      Then your reach is to short so probably it’s better to try to stand shorter on the ball or a longer shaft! So the ball impact moves more to middle of the clubface.
      If your hit it on the heel. (Just like me) than you probably slice it. I need to stand more away from the ball or get a shorter shaft. That’s why I’m going to fit myself soon to find out.
