- Extra Stiff Shaft vs Stiff Shaft - Blind Test !!! Taylormade, Titleist, Ping, Callaway all offer different shaft options. Exotic shafts, standard shafts, Stiff shafts, extra stiff shafts. In this video I put an extra stiff shaft against exactly the same shaft but in standard stiff. Using the Taylormade GAPR Low we find out if it’s possible to tell the difference? And if it’s possible to guess which is which!

Great video, keep up the great work. Soon as you showed spin and mentioned tighter dispersion I knew shaft 2 was x-stiff. That is exactly what I found on my driver which had me change from stiff to x-stiff.
James, I watched some of the other shaft videos from you. The results of this one is maybe the most surprising. Thanks for this most interesting video!
I was fitted at Mizuno Atlanta and moved from Reg and Stiff to extra stiff. At 56, no one was more surprised than me since I was fitted for the originals.

I've used a Stiff shaft my whole adult life. My swing speed had slowed to the point about 3 years ago that my fitter told me that I was borderline between a regular and a stiff with my swing speed. I think that helped motivate me because since then, I've been in the gym 5 days a week and am now doing yoga as well.
I've recently moved up to X-Stiff and the numbers support the change! I went from around 100mph swing speed with a driver to around 109-113mph. I can get it all the way to 120mph if I really want to but I can't really control it....yet! I'm still working on strengthening my core to help better support the speed that's lurking in my swing.
My Driver, Fwy and Hybrids are all X-Flex and HEAVY. My irons all have KBS Tour 130 X-flex shafts that have been (1X) soft-stepped. My wedges have KBS Tour 130 S+ shafts. I enjoy the flex and weight progression throughout my set. It makes for a very consistent and comfortable feel.
I've found that overall, stiffer makes for straighter for me, and doesn't cost me enough distance to lose any sleep over it.
Used to use x-stiff in my driver but changed to stiff after a driver lesson. Dispersion is still a little bit off but that I'm afraid is pilot error and not the driver. I go it wrong too, I thought you would have been better with the stiff shaft, but hey what do I know. Great video James, keep up the great work.

Well done for the 10,000 you deserve it for all the work you put into the content of your videos. All my old dears are regular shafts apart from the Macgregor Ben Crenshaws which are macs own power flex shafts which still feel like a modern regular flex shaft.

Ping Tour 65 stiff in my G400 max I like the weight and I could feel the lag in the clubhead.
I use KBS Tour X flex 1and1/2 " longer, so they play a little softer, but feel great. Was fitted for these shafts
I use a stiff shaft even at 113 mph clubhead speed with my driver. I stay with the stiff all the way through the set. I was fitted into the stiff or x stiff. For me it became a feel thing. The extra stiff felt like I was swing a 2x4 lol. Being fitted my trajectory spin 2200 driver were just ideal with the stiff. I believe there is a difference in manufactures when it comes to this as well not to mention the design of shaft. This why you shouldn’t have a club in your bag that you were not fitted for if you want to play your best. Even your putter. SAM putt lab all the way!

I use True Temper DG 120 in X100 Flex. Main reason is one...I was fitting into those...and two I find them to be way more consistent for me. Takes the miss to the left out, and helps me keep it straighter, and lower. I hit very high and very spiny...the X100 really helped to bring both the height and spin to more manageable numbers.

I use kbs c taper x130 in my ap2 irons which are heavy but yet use hzrdus yellow 63 x stiff in my m2 and is light . Both were custom fit to suit both my swing speed and feel, but importantly with no compromise on performance.
I used a set of irons with senior graphite shafts but have recently switched to regular steel now that I have dropped from 19 to 15 handicap.
I think you can do polls that pop up during your video, works better than comments. Great vid btw! I thought the last one was xs :)
I use steel stiff staff 120g. I use to use regular but it felt to light to me, and due to the flex I would lost the location of the head. Plus I needed a upgrade because I was still playing with the same set since early 2000s. Old with the lynx in with the AP2

Stiff... Had to be, lower spin and closer dispersion usually means stiffer shaft.

Have a stiff and a TX driver shaft.... At first I felt like the TX was much more stiff but by the end of my round I really couldn't feel much difference in feel.
Just had a driver fitting and on paper I would be a Stiff flex (circa 100mph swing speed), but I’m a big lad with fast transition and ended up with a Tensei White 70g X stiff - it’s like a bloody poker but really stable and I like the ‘heft’ of it. Dispersion seemed much tighter too on the launch monitor
Quick question have you seen how much they want for honma clubs, what the heck are they made of Gold, and do you get a hole in one every time out with them, for the cost you should

I use a stiff shaft based of my swing speed and preference when being fitted. :)
Move from Reg to Stiff and found tighter dispersion and better feel as well.
I use a combination.. driver is X, hybrids are regular, irons are stiff .. I go on what works 👍 interesting suggestion .. try a test blades vs game improvement like Titleist mb vs AP3 but take away the sound to see how feel is effected

Comparison between driving irons would be good, I guess the big three are Gapr, Fli Hi and Ping. I use the Fli Hi due to the forgiveness on poor strikes, steel shaft though as opposed to the Gapr and Ping driving irons.
I play X-stiff shafts all the way through my clubs . i was fit into the x stiff with a club head speed of 118 and love the feel of a really stiff shaft. i play x100s in the irons and love the feel of them.

Love this one. Would be nice in a way if fitters kinda did this and didn’t say and just let you swing it and see the figures improve or get worse, I do think when x flex goes in that I just give it that little bit more!

I use a stiff shaft in my driver after 3 or 4 seasons of using a regular shaft and I have not lost any distance and am in the fairway and out of trouble a lot more, even though my swing speed would put me in a regular I have found that the stiff shaft works better
You definitely swing with enough violence (in a good way) to merit the X in the longer clubs.
I use X in my graphite’s (D, 3, 2-hybrid) and recently went to S300 steel in my irons and wedges.
Thought I bought stiff but it later showen that it was senior
I've played Dynamic Gold X100's since 1998. But I also play pretty heavy swing weights. Back in those days is was all about feel and distance control. I'm not sure what shafts I should play since it's been so long since I last got fitted (as much as you could get fit back in 2005) BTW...I thought shaft 1 was the stiff.
I play X flex because I like making golf harder work than it is, also I'm right handed and need help to not go left.
Tried the gapr and on that occasion just couldn't hit it.. the pro brought out a modifed 1987 ping eye 2 1iron.. ugly as sin but I was hitting 240m(not yards)... absolute weapon !
James.. not to split hairs, but I've owned two HZRDUS Yellow 65g shafts assembled at Taylormade, one was 6.0 and one was 6.5 and their shaft frequency CPM's were 286 and 288, which is basically none existent in difference. I've also had Ping Tour 65s and Ping Tour 65x and those were 265 and 285 CPM's, so I think one can't really compare stiff vs xstiff. As we all know one manufacturer's stiff can be another's xstiff as they don't have any industry standard for these. Good video though, and glad you didn't take out your camera on the blindfolded swing..!
If anyone is interested I have 3-aw x stiff tour issue dynamic gold x100 shafts. Very nice feel but a bit much for me.
I use heavier and stiff shafts to keep the ball flight down, otherwise they go to high.
70g driver. 80g 3w 85g 3Hyb s300 titliest mb.

Second shaft is the stiff, first shaft is the extra stiff. Here is my reasoning: The extra stiff shaft is moving your contact lower on the face. Because of this you are getting more gear-effect spin. The stiff shaft is centering your strike better, so there is less variation in your numbers. Shaft 2 was a better fit for you overall.

Fitted on launch monitor ,I like x stiff in Graphite woods ,the numbers were really good ,in irons x worked well as did stiff but liked the feel of the s 300's a bit better.

i use anything from women's flex to stiff flex i don't look at flex i choose on feel for whatever club im using so i have a mixture more about weight for me don't care what flex it is.

Stiff and xstiff along with regular are Not what they use to be do to the precise manufacturing process. You now can have a stiff but lighter in weight.
Besides its all about one's ability to spring the shaft or in others take advantage of the kick point! Don't be deceived by the labels, ( be fitted)!!!!

I normally used a stiff shaft in all my clubs. My swing speed averages between 111-115. I was fitted for a rogue driver with an x shaft and I’ve gained a significant amount of yards. My driving average was 285 and now it’s at 300 on average. Got the shaft cut down by an inch also. I should have been fitted years ago.
