I play exclusively now with MacGregor Muirfield 20th blades 2-SW and persimmon. I am 51 years old, handicap is 3, I play links golf in the UK and couldn’t be happier using my equipment.

I played the RAC os all the way through high school until last year and loved the feel. Contact felt good and sounded good and the ball always felt like it jumped off the face. New technology and stiffer shafts were the only reason i upgraded, otherwise i probably would’ve stuck with them until they gave out.

Titleist 712 MB are my favorite club of all time, followed by the Mizuno MP20 copper, and third the Nike Blades from the mid 2000’s.

I have Takomo 101T irons. I built the set myself. I had P790 s. I had crazy distance control, so I sold them.
I do like the hidden tech, but drawn back a bit. My 101T clubs are similar to the P770s at more than 1/2 the price. Plus I built the set myself.
But…I do like the eye 2 set I have. The offset is a bit much. And, my favorite “winter” clubs are an indestructible cast set of DCI Black 962. Still play them.

Cool video! Amazing to see the Taylor made burner introduced the foam filled cavity tech in the 90’s that I see is marketed as the hot new thing of recent years. So much wisdom you have and I appreciate you sharing your collection.

I remember those Taylormade hollow irons when they came out. People thought they were somewhat of a joke. Old caddie

Taylor Made actually had Inner Cavity Weight ICW hollow middle irons in the late 80s...around 1988.

I've had fun messing around with vintage clubs in the last couple years. Played a few rounds with some Wilson Sam Snead Blue Ridge irons and MacGregor Ben Crenshaw woods. Recently I stumbled across a HUGE find while at Goodwill. I saw a cool black and red leather/pleather RAM bag and when I looked at what was in it, I found a full set of RAM Fastbacks. 3-PW, Matching Fastback 1,3,4,5 Maple laminate woods. All for $20. The irons had headcovers and they are about as clean as can be with very little wear, same with the woods. Immediately pulled the original cracked grips off and replaced them. Can't wait to go out and play a round with them after winter.
I've had so much fun playing vintage clubs. It takes away the pressure of trying to score well. I'm a decent player at around a 6 handicap so luckily I can put a decent strike on any club. I can already picture the 220 yard little butter cut off the first tee using the 1 wood🤣

Have you ever talked about the development an the use of offset in irons? I am curious when offset was first used and promoted for game improvement. Thanks!

MT Tourney or similar for me, but to answer the question; if I was given the choice of two rental sets, I'd probably take the massive Pings just for the hell of it and the fact that I've never hit a Ping iron before. (Or do I want to keep that proud boast? 😉)

Oh wow, that’s quite a statement from such a golf historian! You’ve at least gotta hit the Eye 2 for knowledge reasons.

For me I like the look and feel of a player's cavity back, but I'm thinking back years ago now...the Taylormade burner tour irons from '96-'98ish, with all the ugly goldish-brown paint fill removed and polished down with steel whool. Hey, those are Still in my bag right now, I even "de-chromed" the stiff Precision rifle shafts, look sorta like a KBS c-taper shaft. The deal on those pro level irons was the sole ground...very freindly as they had some "bounce" not flat and knife edged. Often overlooked when it comes to playability.
Any iron that has that muscle pad (mizuno t- zoid/ the rac's, Ping s55/i200) I just like that look. Never cared for gimmicks or big paint fills. Some of the new Maltby iron heads look very good, understated tech!

For me, if the iron looks nice at address whatever’s in the cavity doesn’t really bother me unless it’s just that ugly. Like for old 845s irons, they look great in the cavity but the offset takes away from the appeal of the club so I prefer the look of a dci or 320 iron.

How do you feel about the Taylor Made Stealth Irons?

I still play the TaylorMade Burner Midsize irons. I agree that they were ahead of their time and believe that they are close to the same foam filled tech of the new P770's and are almost the same lofts. (7 & 8 irons are exactly the same lofts/degrees) Would love to see a heads-up comparison of the Midsize vs P770 and just how far new tech has come. Thanks for posting/sharing.

PING clubs are not "beautiful" but they are distinctive and have character which I find very appealing.

Agreed, especially the Zing 2 and ISI. Such unique designs and functionally beautiful, if not traditionally beautiful.

Iron has changed a lot. I started 1976 and bought a set of clubs with name Honeycomb. I think they were with toe heel Toe heel and weight in the sole in Ping Eye was just a dream due to the price tag. Problem for me is that every vendor has changed their loft all the time, Today a 9i is like an 8i or even 7i years ago. Example Ping Eye from end 90s 7i was on 36 degree, today a 9i can be on 38 degree. Also a Gap wedge today can be on 48 degree and a typical Sand wedge is on 56 degree so you get a gap of 8 degree and the reason why the Gap wedge came out initially to be around 52 degree was that the Pitching wedge was suddenly bent up like 9i. Now you need a 52 degree wedge added in any case so we are just fooling ourselves.... just saying.
