I was unable to work on my wife’s quad last year. Long story short, took it to the “most reputable “ dealership in my area, they told me it had zero compression and $3600 to rebuild. I obviously passed and when I was able to work on it again, the compression was on the higher end of the specs. All I wanted was it tuned up and gone through. So glad I have the knowledge to not get completely ripped off.

So when the mechanic cleans or replaces it and chargers the client, the quad was consider garbage at that point. @@bradfrye8297 I love all three of my Polarizes. I have owned Polaris quads since 1990. I have NEVER EVER had to walk out because my machine died. I usually ride 5,000 miles a year between my dirt bike and quad. When I was much younger, I rode my duel sport bikes 10,000 to 15,000 miles a year. I also had excellent luck with my Yamahas.
Please tell all of us what brand of machine that you ride. I would like to know. If you are proud of it, tell us.
      By the way, I mean that I have 3 Polaris 4 wheelers right now. A 2022 570 Trail, a 2009 Sportsman 500, and a 2018 RZR 900. I have owned 2 1990 350s, 2 1995 sportsman 500s, 2 1999 Sportsman 500s, 2 2002 Sportsman 500s and a 2009 that I still have, and a 2012 that I traded in for my 2022 machine.
The only thing that ever happened out on the trails is, I lost a belt on my 2012 machine. I was 30 miles from the truck, BUT, I always carry a spare belt and enough tools to change it. Took me 30 minutes on the side of a mountain at 8,000 feet in elevation. Spectacular view while changing the belt. I DO trust my Polaris machines, and I always ride alone.

Joe, I know I wrote this before but you never answered. I do the same as you. I buy old Bikes and get them running. I restore them after getting them running good. About 2-3 Bikes a year for the past 40 years. Now my process is simple. A good wash and clean of all parts while assembled. Then a diagnosis and general check out. Then I strip it down completely. The most important thing is the initial wash and clean. It means clean parts to work with. This is key to me because it is much easier to see everything. Cracks, breaks and more. No dirt gets into the inside too. My hands are cleaner. Why do you not do this easy and simple job! I ask myself every time I watch your vids. Dont get me wrong I like your work.

First thing to do in a no start situation, take starting fluid or WD40 and give a shot down carb, if it fires then its a no fuel situation, if not then its a spark situation, saves alot of time and work. This has always helped me diagnose a no start symptom quickly. Nice job on this one, who would've guessed timing was off that much? I wonder if that shop did that to get a high priced repair and then just readjust the timing and give it back to him, that will be $3200.00 sir lol. But I would be very upset selling it that cheap then finding out what was really wrong, that shop owes him big time. EDIT: sorry got my situations reversed lol, been a long day

You know, Joe.. and I'm at the part in the video where you just said if it is the valves you should call the fella you bought this from and tell him not to go there anymore, but I have a feeling man.. if it's a 'mechanic shop' and maybe it's a place that does a lot of business, they're going to be just like all the other big places and they just DON'T want to bother pulling the top end apart and checking anything.. Not that they're lazy, but that they just don't want to do it because they have so much other work to do. It's not a good thing, we've moved into this disposable life mindset.. everything is disposable today. Oh it's not running, yeah it needs a motor. Wait what?? What if the valves are out?? Nah, it's easier to just throw a known good motor in. Oh.. uh.. ok I guess.. :/

If you’re testing for low compression, why would you leave that filthy air filter in? You need air to create compression. As a small engine mechanic, I’ve had several mowers come in with plugged air filters, and after I removed the filter they started and ran fine. You need four major items for an engine to run - air, fuel, spark, timing - and number 5 compression.
The big glob in the carb bowl could explain why it ran and then wouldn’t. Gunk will float around and then cover ports intermittently.
Nice catch on the timing!! Great the way you reasoned it through and watched for symptoms that didn’t “seem” to be related. Good job. I think this is a great example of why knowing and remembering to check those five factors I mentioned before is important.

Most of the time its the first thing I check when they say its hard to start, typically people clean the carb in that situation (it never hurts), but setting the valves always did the trick for me.

The Mechanic wasn't completely wrong, it was low compression( due to timing ). I suspect the last time it had a top end rebuild, the rebuilder didn't time it quite right( was off a few teeth ). Awesome video Joe, great diag, got there in the end. I wonder if the timing chain could be stretched a bit?

It didn’t really take zero dollars because your time is worth something…or to someone who couldn’t physically do the work, they would have to rely on a mechanic to do it for them and shop rates are well over $100/hr now and I’ve seen them as high as $150/hr…so although you got it for a good price and fixed it yourself there was likely a good 10-12 hours of shop time to tune that rig up so at least $1200 worth of labour…which is still a far cry from $3200…his problem is he didn’t get a second opinion which sucked for him but sure helped you..this is why as men we need to be able to fix our own shit!..you lucked out on a good bike for an amazing price and with a little elbow grease and some know how, you scored!..his loss was your gain!..cheers!
