I’ve seen a lot of engine tear downs in my lifetime, but nothing ever like this. You couldn’t do that to the piston with a blow torch and hammer. Truly amazing.
Hmmmm, you have a battery that needs a charge or is possibly bad so you jump right to pulling the starter??? Then you pull a spark plug (still don't have enough voltage to even run the starter but you pull it just the same) plug is bent. Nothing in an engine will bend a plug like that so maybe when they were checking a no start engine they dropped the plug. However even though you still don't have enough power to start you go ahead and break down the engine. Noti g that the valves are fine no bad wear and tear on anything ahah! Piston is missing !!! Even though you had no reason to expect anything other than a dead battery (you need to show 13.5 volts at rhe battery to be good) so even though the oil is clean with no visible degree, no sign of heat distortion or virtually anything that would be indicative of a thrown rod or failed piston, cracked rings or anything . . . . You go straight to a tear down. . . . Some people will do anything for content. Small people with nothing real to offer.

@@zorrorides1 'you need to show 13.5 volts at rhe battery to be good' Nope. The voltage of a car battery should be around 12.6 volts when fully charged and the engine is off. Between 13.7 and 14.7 volts with the engine running.
I am a retired internal combustion maintenance and repairs engineer and in my opinion that engine was held flat out in neutral till it destroyed its self. That’s after its original partial seizure. I love watching your videos and hope you have a very successful life. Regards Raymond 🏴

The clue is in the title on my apprenticeship papers. I will give you a clue 🤔maintenance. Not design. I have overhauled many many engines in my younger days And could still do it today. As long as someone did the heavy lifting 😂🏴👍👍
I've watched you work through a lot of simple fixes, but this is a good reminder to people that when you shop on craigslist, you never know exactly what you're getting. Most people would be at a total loss to fix this repair, my hat is off to you. 👏 EDIT: yeah, that piston will be fine, use some J-B Weld...LOL

are they cast pistons? thats the only way i see this happening. there has to be others with the same problem. Edit, yes they are cast aluminum pistons. im surprised this isnt a more common issue on china motors.

If you own a small wire feed welder here's a small tip......Don't struggle with the pain and aggravation of pulling and installing the engine. Put a .065 cut off wheel in your angle grinder and surgically remove the obstruction and weld the piece back in upon reassembly....I did this multiple times on Ford Econoline Vans 30 years ago.

I have seen this on my dirt bikes one time and I would bet the factory left one of the piston's wrist pin snap-rings unsnapped. So after a while of running and vibration the piston pin drifted over to one side causing the piston to tilt just enough in thousands of an inch to cause it to stretch and hang on the cylinder's lower sleeve which then shredded the piston to pieces.

Iv niver seen anything like that in my life and I'm a machanic retired. the person who sold you that knew.he has Put a scope in the plug hole and seen there was no piston. Good luck buddy you will still come out on top.
I was wondering why he did not do a compression test and squirt some oil down the plug hole like he usually does. On the whole he is very good with carbs and trouble shooting. Do the testing first. A bore scope would have said a lot.
The ole disappearing piston trick. I've seen a lot of engine carnage, but never that. Usually when a piston lets loose like that there would be holes in the case. That's impressive!
Just bought a non running Royal Enfield Himalayan and when I took the head off it was the same situation. The piston had blown apart. Everything was unusable, head, cylinder, crank. I opted for a replacement engine as even the cases were banged up, plus the replacement engine was cheaper than a rebuild. Good luck!

I took a boat to Jim & Seans Boat Repair (and pot dealers) in Spicewood many years ago and waited months for a new burned piston and head plaining. On one of many check-for-progress trips the 2 "mechanics" installed a V-8 head on a big block v-8 with a screwdriver in front cylinder, in front of me. I told them, but they thought I was giving them BS as payback for delays and continued the repair.... Wish I could have seen the start-up later.
first for me too, never seen anything like that before. musta disintegrated and not turned any further to spread chunks. seen a BSA twin with a wooden piston sold as not running very well
Just found this channel and this one blew my mind. Never seen anything like that. Since that spark plug was loose, I bet the guy you bought it from planned on fixing it, pulled that plug and put a scope down in the cylinder. Saw that disaster, put the plug back in and put it up for sale.
My father was a JD diesel mechanic his entire career… as with you he had a brilliant mechanical mind. I did receive that gene but your mechanical hunting skills are like his were…you folks are amazing

No metal in oil because it set long enough they settled to the bottom.. been mechanic 40 years, stopped by a guys shop had one of those 275 gallon plastic almost see through totes that was full of oil.. asked him why it was outside.. it looked like clean new oil. He said it had been setting in sun for 10 years and all carbon separated and fell to bottom.. funny I had the same tote empty setting in texas sun 3 years later plastic just broke apart. Guess his oil kept plastic from drying out and breaking down? Love your videos keep them coming
I had a VW as a first car. Overall a good car but started loosing pressure. Took it to a mechanic to get it fixed. It ran really smooth until the intake valve got sucked into the piston (read through) when I was getting on the Freeway 2 blocks from my house. That thing sounded like a thrashing machine on a bad day. But the mechanic was honest and rebuilt it for free. He had misread his calipers. Owning up to a mistake brought greater respect.
We've done several of those, top ends mostly, few bad cranks, 29:10 not a fan. Cub Cadet are not the easiest parts to get. Great vid, just bad memories for me and my apprentice. 😮

I used to work for MTD (Cub Cadet) and had this exact unit as a demo to engage dealerships to sell these machines. Hisun is the manufacture. Lots of issues with the wiring harnesses and lack of manufacture support, forced Cub to pull the plug on the Challenger 750 efi. I never had an issue with my demo and loved it. Hope you get it fixed up!
It can get worse, I had a Briggs and Stratton 8hp snow blower throw a rod through the cylinder block. Piston seized and the rod snapped. Great videos, keep them coming.
11:20 the reason you see a low voltage going to the starter is because the starter is in a locked rotor condition and draws excessive amps while NOT turning! Similar low voltage can be measured @ the Pos of the battery when the solenoid/relay is engaged !
Unfortunately, that's how the cookie crumbles at times. Love your videos and the detailed breakdowns, repairs as well as the assembly process. You motivated me to purchase a 2006 YZ450F for $800... lol. I have about $750 into it... waiting for the parts to arrive. Keep kicking ass man!
Well, one thing I have learned from watching your videos is that I would never buy a non-running side by side. I don't think I have ever seen you get one that was simple to work on, and most have been a royal pain. My hat is off to you for your perseverance with these machines.

OMG. I've pulled apart and rebuild a few engines in 50+ years but never seen one do that before. Just incredible. Good luck putting this back together again, although by the looks of the damage, a replacement engine might be a lot less hassle !
Love the channel, been following a LOT of re-builds. A little advice from an electronics engineer - Don't continually try to turn the motor over when the starter is locked up......you'll only end up burning out the starter and/or the solenoid. Also, a clue that either the battery is knackered or the starter was locked up was the backlighting on the clocks going dim when you turned the key.......a lot of current flowing out the battery and a large voltage drop.
Great to see an honest teardown of engine that we unlucky mortals usually find ourselves working on (ie not one tweak and its working again)....reckon that engine was at full revs when that piston destructed,no old people riding that then.
Very clear example of corporate greed! placing extremely cheap and poorly designed engines and parts in $15,000 + UTVs. Another very good example why people should never pay close to MSRP for anything used and no warranty regardless of hours.

Yes,but he always does the wrong steps first! You don't spend time testing solenoids and starters before pulling the plug! Or try starting, checking for spark, etc. before testing compression. He does this EVERY VIDEO.
When you pulled the head off and there was no piston I cried with laughter and nearly fell off my armchair. How is that even possible. Might pay to look for an engine.

Looks like someone lefted a few things out when telling you about that engine. You could always run it Freddy Flintstone style in the meantime. Well the good news is it can be fixed with time and bit of money but you can get it done... You sure do find you some good one's...

I haven’t heard very many people boasting on Cub Cadet products, quite the opposite in fact. After watching this nightmare, I don’t see myself ever buying anything sold under that brand.
I absolutely DESPISE when I see people connect a TONE of crap to the battery. Get a junction box and put it to the side and run a cable down to it. You can properly fuse it AND it looks neat. I just dont get why people insist on doing it this way.
the worst engine damage i ever saw was a 05 troy lee predator i bought for parts when i was young.. younger kid was riding went from 5th to first blew the piston off the wirst pin broke the rod and the rod acted like a saw at 10000 rpm or more about slicing the motor in half cut the entire front corner off the motor off cut the starter in half cut the input for the trans in half blowing gears through the clutch side center case and the clutch basket blew through the cover the piston hit the head so hard it broke the timing chain and bent the exhaust and push the head up about an 1inch high off what was left of the cylinder... i was amazed the kid got off the machine without even a cut there was bent and dented parts of the frame around the motor where parts hit it and a trans gear lodged in the bottom of the seat pan... i wish i still had the pics of it it was just amazing
I'm 70 and have been a mechanic most of my life I NEVER thought the piston would be gone hahahaha I bet the guy just tried to start the motor over and over again forget the knocking sounds until the piston stuck under the crank ,

Made in China with junk Chinese parts is the problem. They have these China made piles of junk sitting in the entry ways of Fleet Farms, Menards, Home Depot all over the country. All you have to do is look at em, a child of 4 can see they are junk scrap heaps. If yer still not convinced, then test drive one, then run away as fast as you can. banks won't give you loans on these crap heaps.@@craigeldridge2695
Back in the 70's me and a buddy pulled the head off an old '63 Cadillac Fleetwood with a 390" someone gave us and two of the cylinders looked the same way, cam was broken in three places and it was a total wreck. We found the engine and trans from a '64 with the newer but same block 429" engine and swapped it in, they told us it wouldnt fit the previous year Cadillac but we had the driveshaft reworked, redrilled the rear trans. crossmember mount for the new drivetrain and it ran fine.
Looks more like the old couple had a grand son! Lol. In my opinion, that type of catastrophic failure we were wide open. The connecting rod showed high heat marks at the wrist pin area. I guess if I knew much about this, you would be watching my videos. Lol. Sorry it was so far gone.
My car ate a piston once. The valves jumped time by 3 notches. It accelerated like crap but got up to speed eventually. I was halfway home on an 80-mile trip when the #2 piston disintegrated. Scarred the cylinder wall a bit. I replaced it with a junkyard piston and got another 8 months out of it before it went again. That time it took out the cylinder wall. I replaced the engine at right around 100,000 with an engine that had about 120,000 on it. That went another 45,000 miles before it developed a knock. Once I tore it down, I figured out it was the flex plate rattling on the torque converter. My pistons were completely sludged up though, and the oil pump needed a new seal. About $800 later it's all back together and running like new or better. Yes, the rod bearings will be fine, but the cylinder wall will be toast. You may have gotten lucky on the valves (I'm at 37:16 in).
Cub Cadet is One of the 8 brand names out there made at the Chinese company of Hysun (spelling) I forgot all there names now, but back in 2020 we bought a brand new Massimo and had it shipped to out door in Floo’da from Texas for $5,900 …!!

Could be. But with the information given in the video we know that that the average speed of this machine was no more than 8 mph (1664 miles divided by 201 hrs), this math doesn’t account for idle time either so I would expect it to be less.
That's funny you say that. Cause I thought the same thing. Cause when he took off the first valve cover it was missing a bolt. So someone was definitely in there for sure. But yeah when he said the piston was gone I said someone definitely took it apart and put it back together hahahaha
@PongbyAtari Cub cadet is nothing more than a name. They've sucked ever since MTD bought them MTD doesn't really build anything they just buy the rights and put their name on it, so you never really know what you're buying!
@@PongbyAtari I don't know when MTD bought Cub but it was in the 90's I think. I liken it to AMF buying Harley Davidson. AMF is a junk company also,however there was a total different outcome for Harley as AMF at least sold it back to HD before AMF had a chance to close the doors.
Joe, I had a Suzuki dealership with my dad in the 70's we replaced rods ourselves using the shop press to press apart installing new rod and bearing and pressing back together then using a straight edge making the counter weights even never had a problem u might try it. We did it on all the racing bikes as well.

That is a Hisun engine, just rebranded for Cub. Motorcycle Doctor out of Missouri is a good source for parts and knowledge on these.

I’d definitely try and find a complete used engine for it and skip the rebuild if possible. Good luck!

I don't understand why he never power washes anything before he takes it apart. The least he could do is blow some of the dirt off with air.

I have seen this on my dirt bikes one time and I would bet the factory left one of the piston's wrist pin snap-rings unsnapped. So after a while of running and vibration the piston pin drifted over to one side causing the piston to tilt just enough in thousands of an inch to cause it to stretch and hang on the cylinder's lower sleeve which then shredded the piston to pieces.

Years ago, a bunch of us guys went to a Mud Bog event for the day. What happened that day pretty much sums-up this UTV. Iv niver seen anything like that in my life and I'm a machanic retired. the person who sold you that knew.he has Put a scope in the plug hole and seen there was no piston. Good luck buddy you will still come out on top.
I was wondering why he did not do a compression test and squirt some oil down the plug hole like he usually does. On the whole he is very good with carbs and trouble shooting. Do the testing first. A bore scope would have said a lot.

The ole disappearing piston trick. I've seen a lot of engine carnage, but never that. Usually when a piston lets loose like that there would be holes in the case. That's impressive!

Just bought a non running Royal Enfield Himalayan and when I took the head off it was the same situation. The piston had blown apart. Everything was unusable, head, cylinder, crank. I opted for a replacement engine as even the cases were banged up, plus the replacement engine was cheaper than a rebuild. Good luck!

I took a boat to Jim & Seans Boat Repair (and pot dealers) in Spicewood many years ago and waited months for a new burned piston and head plaining. On one of many check-for-progress trips the 2 "mechanics" installed a V-8 head on a big block v-8 with a screwdriver in front cylinder, in front of me. I told them, but they thought I was giving them BS as payback for delays and continued the repair.... Wish I could have seen the start-up later.
Of all the things you have fixed this is the craziest! That thing had to be knocking terrible until it let go.

Just found this channel and this one blew my mind. Never seen anything like that. Since that spark plug was loose, I bet the guy you bought it from planned on fixing it, pulled that plug and put a scope down in the cylinder. Saw that disaster, put the plug back in and put it up for sale.
My father was a JD diesel mechanic his entire career… as with you he had a brilliant mechanical mind. I did receive that gene but your mechanical hunting skills are like his were…you folks are amazing

I have to also admire your mid-western good manners and patience having never heard a swear word on your channel. If it was me, you would have only heard minutes of bleeps during the inevitable setbacks. Great job!

I always avoid vehicles driven by someones grandparents.
No metal in oil because it set long enough they settled to the bottom.. been mechanic 40 years, stopped by a guys shop had one of those 275 gallon plastic almost see through totes that was full of oil.. asked him why it was outside.. it looked like clean new oil. He said it had been setting in sun for 10 years and all carbon separated and fell to bottom.. funny I had the same tote empty setting in texas sun 3 years later plastic just broke apart. Guess his oil kept plastic from drying out and breaking down? Love your videos keep them coming
I had a VW as a first car. Overall a good car but started loosing pressure. Took it to a mechanic to get it fixed. It ran really smooth until the intake valve got sucked into the piston (read through) when I was getting on the Freeway 2 blocks from my house. That thing sounded like a thrashing machine on a bad day. But the mechanic was honest and rebuilt it for free. He had misread his calipers. Owning up to a mistake brought greater respect.
I've always wanted a utv but all the plastic parts and problems I've seen on your channel has changed my mind I'll just keep using my trx 😮
If you can find a low mile bike built before the 2000s that will be the best bike ever all this newer stuff is garbage.
We've done several of those, top ends mostly, few bad cranks, 29:10 not a fan. Cub Cadet are not the easiest parts to get. Great vid, just bad memories for me and my apprentice. 😮

I used to work for MTD (Cub Cadet) and had this exact unit as a demo to engage dealerships to sell these machines. Hisun is the manufacture. Lots of issues with the wiring harnesses and lack of manufacture support, forced Cub to pull the plug on the Challenger 750 efi. I never had an issue with my demo and loved it. Hope you get it fixed up!
It can get worse, I had a Briggs and Stratton 8hp snow blower throw a rod through the cylinder block. Piston seized and the rod snapped. Great videos, keep them coming.

11:20 the reason you see a low voltage going to the starter is because the starter is in a locked rotor condition and draws excessive amps while NOT turning! Similar low voltage can be measured @ the Pos of the battery when the solenoid/relay is engaged !

Well, one thing I have learned from watching your videos is that I would never buy a non-running side by side. I don't think I have ever seen you get one that was simple to work on, and most have been a royal pain. My hat is off to you for your perseverance with these machines.

OMG. I've pulled apart and rebuild a few engines in 50+ years but never seen one do that before. Just incredible. Good luck putting this back together again, although by the looks of the damage, a replacement engine might be a lot less hassle !

Love the channel, been following a LOT of re-builds.
A little advice from an electronics engineer - Don't continually try to turn the motor over when the starter is locked up......you'll only end up burning out the starter and/or the solenoid.
Also, a clue that either the battery is knackered or the starter was locked up was the backlighting on the clocks going dim when you turned the key.......a lot of current flowing out the battery and a large voltage drop.
starters and solenoids are cheap though so its not a big deal at all.
Great to see an honest teardown of engine that we unlucky mortals usually find ourselves working on (ie not one tweak and its working again)....reckon that engine was at full revs when that piston destructed,no old people riding that then.
Very clear example of corporate greed! placing extremely cheap and poorly designed engines and parts in $15,000 + UTVs. Another very good example why people should never pay close to MSRP for anything used and no warranty regardless of hours.

Yes,but he always does the wrong steps first! You don't spend time testing solenoids and starters before pulling the plug! Or try starting, checking for spark, etc. before testing compression. He does this EVERY VIDEO.

However, me, I don’t know very little about the engine of a vehicle… however, even I know that a piston does not look like that, should not have been destroyed like that which is totally totally crazy. Now, 45 years ago, I did help a friend take apart his car and put new rings in it. And it was an activity that I actually enjoyed. I wished I had stuck with it, because, if nothing else I would’ve loved to of had the knowledge that you do. I can see where working on a vehicle of any kind can be habit for me.
Taking that hose off unlocked a hidden achievement based on the sound that came as soon as it detached :D

I've seen alot of crazy stuff while fixing bikes and quads but no piston and then to find it in the bottom end that has to be a first.
Looks like someone lefted a few things out when telling you about that engine. You could always run it Freddy Flintstone style in the meantime. Well the good news is it can be fixed with time and bit of money but you can get it done... You sure do find you some good one's...

I absolutely DESPISE when I see people connect a TONE of crap to the battery. Get a junction box and put it to the side and run a cable down to it. You can properly fuse it AND it looks neat. I just dont get why people insist on doing it this way.

the worst engine damage i ever saw was a 05 troy lee predator i bought for parts when i was young.. younger kid was riding went from 5th to first blew the piston off the wirst pin broke the rod and the rod acted like a saw at 10000 rpm or more about slicing the motor in half cut the entire front corner off the motor off cut the starter in half cut the input for the trans in half blowing gears through the clutch side center case and the clutch basket blew through the cover the piston hit the head so hard it broke the timing chain and bent the exhaust and push the head up about an 1inch high off what was left of the cylinder... i was amazed the kid got off the machine without even a cut there was bent and dented parts of the frame around the motor where parts hit it and a trans gear lodged in the bottom of the seat pan... i wish i still had the pics of it it was just amazing

Yeah these were a bad design. Lot of complaints bout the piston grenading. Weak oil pumps burn up then 💥

Made in China with junk Chinese parts is the problem. They have these China made piles of junk sitting in the entry ways of Fleet Farms, Menards, Home Depot all over the country. All you have to do is look at em, a child of 4 can see they are junk scrap heaps. Back in the 70's me and a buddy pulled the head off an old '63 Cadillac Fleetwood with a 390" someone gave us and two of the cylinders looked the same way, cam was broken in three places and it was a total wreck. We found the engine and trans from a '64 with the newer but same block 429" engine and swapped it in, they told us it wouldnt fit the previous year Cadillac but we had the driveshaft reworked, redrilled the rear trans. crossmember mount for the new drivetrain and it ran fine.

Looks more like the old couple had a grand son! Lol. In my opinion, that type of catastrophic failure we were wide open. The connecting rod showed high heat marks at the wrist pin area. I guess if I knew much about this, you would be watching my videos. Lol. Sorry it was so far gone.

My car ate a piston once. The valves jumped time by 3 notches. It accelerated like crap but got up to speed eventually. I was halfway home on an 80-mile trip when the #2 piston disintegrated. Scarred the cylinder wall a bit. I replaced it with a junkyard piston and got another 8 months out of it before it went again. That time it took out the cylinder wall. I replaced the engine at right around 100,000 with an engine that had about 120,000 on it. That went another 45,000 miles before it developed a knock. Once I tore it down, I figured out it was the flex plate rattling on the torque converter. My pistons were completely sludged up though, and the oil pump needed a new seal. About $800 later it's all back together and running like new or better.
Yes, the rod bearings will be fine, but the cylinder wall will be toast. You may have gotten lucky on the valves (I'm at 37:16 in).
Cub Cadet is One of the 8 brand names out there made at the Chinese company of Hysun (spelling) I forgot all there names now, but back in 2020 we bought a brand new Massimo and had it shipped to out door in Floo’da from Texas for $5,900 …!!

Could be. But with the information given in the video we know that that the average speed of this machine was no more than 8 mph (1664 miles divided by 201 hrs), this math doesn’t account for idle time either so I would expect it to be less.

MTD doesn't really build anything they just buy the rights and put their name on it, so you never really know what you're buying!

Joe, I had a Suzuki dealership with my dad in the 70's we replaced rods ourselves using the shop press to press apart installing new rod and bearing and pressing back together then using a straight edge making the counter weights even never had a problem u might try it. We did it on all the racing bikes as well.

I wouldn't mess with rebuilding this engine ..just get one that's ready to go
