    It never fails to amaze me how people will spend thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars on a piece of machinery or a vehicle and then park it outside with absolutely no protection from the elements. Is putting a $8 tarp on it too expensive or to difficult to put on?

      actually, covering a bike in a tarp and leaving it for years will accelerate corrosion due to humidity being trapped in there. its better to keep it uncovered to let air around it. ideally it would be in a dry shed or garage, but that isnt always possible

    Hey Mustie! Young lad from the UK here, I had the 125cc version of this bike when I was 17 and its the exact same! Identical, even the engine parts and build. Got some fun advice for you if you continue work on this bike.
    The intake manifolds are gold dust, make sure they dont crack.
    Good luck getting that airbox out, you cant unless you drop the engine.
    Stator is known for burning out, check the copper for black residue if you want to.
    8 valves is a lot in a high revving 2 cyl so they need checking often.
    Bike is pretty much unmodifiable, change exhaust, ruin airflow. Change air filter, ruin airflow. Change carb jets, ruin power.
    Rear cyl known to get hotter than front, a fun way to reduce the build up of temp is to run carb to rear cyl slightly rich to cool cylinder.
    The carbs may be built with soft screws and they mash really easily on purpose to stop tampering. Somehow you managed to get the bowls off with no issues. Maybe 17 year old me didnt know about JIS drivers haha.
    Brings back some good memories, I loved my Hyosung. Great build quality and such a looker. I slash cut my exhausts and it sounded absolutely bonkers revving to 11,000.

      I've been given one that's in really rough shape and I'm working on it currently trying to get it back on the road as a cheap runaround to have alongside my big bike.
      The airbox rubbers are missing completely so unsure of how to go forward really - pod filters and a rejet maybe? I'm trying to spend as little as possible 😂
      It's running currently, but really rough and inconsistent on idle. Do you know what the vacuum device is on the right hand side below the air filter cover by any chance?

      I just finished rebuilding a YZ125 that someone gave to me for free. It had the same story that it ran before it was stored and their son moved away so they no longer had use for it. Long story short, it only had 30lbs of compression! There’s a zero chance it was running. After a new top end rebuild and a lot of other attention, it’s running as good as new.

    Evaporust and a tank sealant/liner could possibly bring that tank back to life. You can't really tell what the tank condition is until it is cleaned out, so no guarantees on that, and I'm sure you know that. There is a clone of Evaporust that works, but it does take a bit longer using EDTA and Citric Acid.

    • @michaelreynolds1904

    • @davidclark7973
      @davidclark7973 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Evaporust works great but its expensive. White or apple cider vinegar works great with a little care and patience. Tank lining is almost always short lived and the end of the tank when it fails. This tank could be good as new with a few gallons of white vinegar. Got to follow up with a rinse of bicarbonate of soda to neutralise the slight acidity.

    • @richardclifton4120
      @richardclifton4120 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@davidclark7973 There is an alternative to Evaporust and I posted the video that proves it, but someone deleted the link on TH-cam. It costs about a nickel on the dollar to make and I know it works because I made some. The liner is only as good as the person prepping the tank and after all, he said the MC isn't worth $500.00 but buying a new tank probably isn't worth it either. A few more years and the tank can be used. Search for EDTA and Evaporust on TH-cam and you should be able to find the video for the clone version.

    I know the 650's they offered in the UK were Suzuki SV engines, so I'd take a good guess that the 250 is originally a Suzuki lump too. They have a pretty good reputation here if looked after. They also offered a 650 sports bike too, great value if you were on a budget.

    • @MB_OutdoorsMT
      @MB_OutdoorsMT 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes, they used to be fairly common here in Malta (Europe) also. Last Hyosung I've seen resembles a Yamaha TW. It wasn't in best shape - but a decent runner.

    • @bryco32
      @bryco32 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Incorrect. . The Hyosung 650 is its own animal that just looks similar to the Suzuki sv650 engine. The Hyosung gv650 and Gt650 engines don't share any parts with the Suzuki nor will the swap into a Suzuki frame. Same goes for the Suzuki 650 engine going into a Hyosung frame. The engine mounts on both are off by a mile to fit the different makers frame. Only thing that is close is both manufacturers rated specs for the 2 engines. I've had a Hyosung gv650 for 11 years and a sv650 for 5 years. Everything above goes for the gv250 engine. It just looks the part but it isn't a 1:1 clone and parts do not interchange.

    I would say put some bolts in the gas tank and shake it up for a while then rinse it out. Maybe put some gas tank sealant in it. I think the gas gage arm fell off and is in the bucket. The pine needles were around the cap when you flipped it over. It is not a bad looking bike. Adjust the lifters. You might get $700-800 for it. All the lights work and the horn and it is low mileage and runs good. If the tires are good and you can clean the tank then sell it... or keep it as a putting around bike. Got any nephews old enough to ride? I would just hate to see something that intact ripped apart.

    I worked my way through college by working at my uncles gas station. Under the right conditions, the gas tanks in the ground can accumulate water in them. One of our customers came in because he had just filled up his tank at another gas station and it quit running and he coasted into our station. We tried everything, spark, fuel and could not get it to run. Then we smelled the fuel and it was water. When he filled up his tank at the other gas station it was nothing but water. I think that may possibly be what happened to this motorcycle.

      Back in 1974 I went to tow a car that had quit on the road. When I got to the vehicle there was a second car stopped a way farther down the road. The driver walked back as I was hooking the first car up and said his car just quit. The drivers had just seen each other as the fueled up at a gas station just over a mile away. As we were talking, a third car coasted to a stop. That driver had filled up at the same gas station. I had come by that station and there was a tanker there filling the tanks. Either there was water in the gasoline being delivered or there was some water in the sump in the tank that got stirred up as the new fuel got dumped in. As I towed one car and pushed another back to the shop, we stopped at the station where they had filled up with unleaded gas to tell them there was a problem and they shut down the unleaded pumps. We later heard that there were at least 12 vehicles that had problems. We towed three, drained the tanks, changed the fuel filters, added Isopropyl Heet to the tanks and filled them with gasoline. The station that sold them the gas paid for it all.

    A lot of S.Korea and chinese manufacturers were doing this at the time (buying the rights to the smaller japanese stuff so they could pump out bikes en masse, for their domestic markets, to then branch out to europe, and II guess to a smaller extent, the US.
    its a shame as everyone thats ridden/owned these bikes loves them. the GT250/Aquila (for the UK they also make 125cc versions too as our licencing laws prohibit learners from riding anything above 125cc/15.5hp, I passed my test nearly 20 years ago, i might be wrong)

    Because it sent its entire life sitting outside the tank filled up with water from the bad design of the filler. They probably made the filler recessed like that so any small dribbles when you filled it would stay and evaporate instead of running down the tank. Unfortunately when the seal failed it allowed the well when filled with water drain into the tank. I bet that's why it started running poorly and then quit running when the water clogged the carbs.

I can't wait to see what the videos are going after next to fix. I just spent a week working on a bike of my own. Had similar fuel tank scum but I found a good fix for it. First rinsed out the fuel tank and then filled it with white vinegar and left it for a couple days to soak. Not perfect but I think it would do wonders for that fuel tank. As long as it is not leaking it has repair potential.

    The Hyosung GV650 Aquila is an oddball Korean concoction whose extreme Dan Dare styling is surprisingly more than matched by its consummate ability, specification and value - for a cruiser at least. Look past the GV650 Aqulia's Star Trek styling and there’s a decent SV-style engine, quality cycle parts and effective, real world performance - and not much to rival the Hyosung GV650 Aquila.

    Again, surprisingly good. Many assume cruisers don’t handle and although the Hyosung GV650 Aquila's certainly no sports bike, with decent usd forks and twin discs up front and a reasonable twin shock set-up at the rear, the GV650 Aquila manages to be both laid-back sumptious AND retain enough control to makes bends entertaining. Well, for a custom bike at least.

    The Hyosung GV650 Aquila motor is essentially a copy of Suzuki’s excellent liquid-cooled V-twin from the SV650 - and a good choice it is, too. This mid-sized V-twin in the Hyosung GV650 Aquila is eager yet flexibile, responsive around town and yet thrilling and brisk at the top end, too. The gearbox is sweet, too. If it can match Suzuki’s own reliability record, Hyosung are onto a winner with the GV650 Aquila.

    Still a little early in the day to say with the Hyosung GV650 Aquila. The oddly-named GV650 Aquila was launched onto the UK market in early 2006 and although no major problems have yet come to light (nor have they with the similarly powered roadster GT models), these are new products from a still largely unproven manufacturer.
    Value vs rivals
    Next up: Equipment
    3 out of 5 (3/5)
    At £4000+ new, the Hyosung GV650 Aquila isn’t actually any cheaper than Suzuki’s own SV650, wo it’s not actually the bargain many expect. That said, the Hyosung GV650 Aquila is well equipped and, in the middleweight cruiser class, is pretty well unique making it good value. Find a Hyosung GV650 Aquila for sale.
    Equipment
    3 out of 5 (3/5)
    You don’t get a hugger or centrestand with the Hyosung GV650 Aquila. You do get a pillion seat on the Hyosung GV650 Aquila that’s not a dirty joke, and a digital display for water temp, trips and clock making the GV650 Aqulia a pretty equipped bike.

I've restored a tank in worse condition than this by actually cutting it in half, sandblasting to bare metal inside, painstakingly TIG welding it back together then using Flowliner Armor Coat to line the inside of the tank again. Rework the shape and repaint. Despite the cost involved it was still cheaper than trying to import a replacement.

      Well done with your repair. My welding teacher was very much against us welding anything that had contained gas in class. He said that gas residue and flammable lacquer could sit in seams and corners of a dry tank and cause problems. I know that plenty of people do weld tanks but that advice has stuck with me. I have a tank that needs a small weld now.
      The thickness of sheet metal used in m/c tanks and car bodywork has got thinner over time. I understand this can make them harder to weld and more prone to distorting or making holes if you aren't sufficiently skilled.

      @@paulketchupwitheverything767That IS good advice, generally I will not weld on anything that held gas, this was an exception. It'd been empty (capless) for YEARS so no chance any gas residue survived but still makes me nervous to put a grinder to a gas tank, but if the sparks from the grinding wheel didn't create a catastrophe, I figured it'd be safe to weld on. ;) The steel on this tank was pretty thick (don't make 'em like that anymore) which is what made it possible to save it. A modern tank would have rusted through completely beyond repair. Still though I'm not a master TIG welder so I was sweating bullets welding it back together. Blow through would have been bad news. I used a technique I learned from a youtube video which is to make a series of tack welds cooling each one afterward with the compressed air gun. This kept it nice and cool but took ages. It was worth it in the end - a lot of sanding and a bit of filler later you'd never know it happened. The tank was perfectly sealed up afterward and has been fine since (still going to this day). Fingers crossed. But it's very satisfying to bring back something from the dead like that.

    *Darren, cheers for the video 🙂I own a 1997 Yammy Virago XV250 which I brought in 2000 with 2,900kms on her dial. She now has over 202,000kms on her dial. But last year I got myself a 2001 Yammy Virago XVS250 from a friend & paid X amount and got it towed home on a trailer... it had sat in a garage for the last 11 years. I drained & replaced the oil & replaced the oil filter. I drained the old petrol & replaced. I replaced the air filter sponge. I brought a new battery & I put in the key & hit the startup button. She fired up instantly & she purred. She then cut out when put into gear... turns out the sidestand sensor had seized up being in the same place for 11 years. Went & got the WOF and re-registered her. Had a few things to watch out for. When the shocks blew out, got fixed. Changed the 21 year old tyres & tubes. Noticed petrol leak so replaced the whole fuelcock unit. This bike had only 3,8ookms on her clock at the time I got her. She is now up to almost 14,000kms. So there are gems sitting away just waiting to be put back on the road again 🙂nz*

    Clean old tank well but maybe add an inline filter if tank metal a bit funky to avoid future issues? That dry rust powder is crazy stuff! Was just thinking that perhaps that tank has a way of not sealing well and that surround fills with rain water and allows water into that tank? Treat with vinegar, clean and then treat with Ospho? Reline with Caswells tank cream or other?

    Fill the tank with vinegar and shake it up with a bit of gravel . let it sit a few weeks. You might get lucky and it won't leak. Great video.

    That's a good looking bike, worth a bit of effort. I'm sure a new rider looking for their first bike would be thrilled with it. 250cc= cheaper insurance. Or maybe it's a good candidate for a cafe conversion. Better to modify a cheap bike than mess-up a more desirable original BMW etc. In Canada, we have product called Seal-All that is my go-to for gas related sealing. I've plugged many, many pinholes, sealed leaky petcocks and salvaged deteriorated gaskets with great success. I'm sure it's available to you in the US, hell, it's probably made down there!. I'd certainly give cleaning the tank a try. The Por15 tank kit works well, but the etching acid might be a bit much in this case, maybe dilute it a bit and give it multiple flushes. Evaporust and a bit of patience might be the answer. Certainly worth a try. Love your videos man, been watching for a long time!

    an aftermarket split tank from the Harley type could be persuaded to fit on there, and give the bike a new lease of life, they were indeed Cloned engines from Suzuki's custom bike range, the VL650 was a pretty popular Custom/cruiser here in the UK for a while, I think they have rebranded to Keywee or something like that these days.
    The tank itself is quite probably savable, by filling it with a rust killer, then using a propitiatory sealing agent ( after removing the sender unit), and yes they had a habit of ingesting water via the tank filler cap screws as they didn't seal well, most guys here in the UK that own them fill the space on the rim with Silicon to stop the water getting in, 80% of the electrical problems were traced back to bad earthing, on most bikes, a common issue, remedied by cleaning and redoing the earth points, and filling all the connectors with Dielectric grease to avoid corrosion

      Do you have proof they cloned a Suzuki engine? It also looks very similar to an early Honda and Kawasaki V twin

    Talk about memory lane. Last time I saw fuel this bad it came straight out of a gas station fueling nozzle. Caused the same issues the bike owner said he had. The gas station had received a delivery of bad fuel and it screwed up a lot of vehicles. Most local repair shops charged customers large sums of money, swapping all kinds of parts, without ever tracing the actual problem back to the source. Some never did get the vehicles running reliable again cause they never dealt with the fuel still in the tank and lines. Flushing the tank multiple times with vinegar should clear most, if not all that gunk out. Then a pressure test to ensure tank's still solid. If tank looks good and holds pressure, I would not use a tank sealer in it. I've found many tank sealers create their own set of issues over time. Better to just repair or replace the tank if needed. You did good, this bike still has a lot of good years in it with the right owner.

    Mustie1, I’ve never seen rust so fine and powdery. Weird for sure! But you got it running even though the plugs were rusty. Be interesting to see what those cylinders and rings looked like (no do’t take it apart). It runs so put a tank on it and sell it. Hope your year started of good.

      If there is such a thing as “pretty rust” we just saw it. Run a pressure washer wand in and around for twenty minutes with the tank upside down. Evaporust is a great product. Mustie is a frugal guy when it comes to fluids. I would try this next. I was a bit puzzled when he said that it’s ONLY a 500 dollar bike. All profit ! He would rather make a Frankenstein vehicle because it’s way more fun. So be it. Nuff said.
