      As an underpaid dealership tech, you couldn't be more wrong.
      Sales makes 3-5x what we make a month.
      Fuck sales.

      @romulusxyz6722 "Sales makes 3x to 5x what we make a month."
      Yeah, that's pretty typical of what it's like here, too.
      That's why the dealerships want their "underpaid mechanics" to steer customers with repair issues toward the sales department. Sales brings in more revenue.
      If they aren't doing that where you're employed, you are the exception, not the rule. And that's good to hear.

      @@jackreisewitz6632 Eh I guess I was pretty brash in my reply. I've been a mechanic for about 2 years now, left the IT field after 16 years for something new. That being said, I don't know as much about it as I sounded like I did, sorry man.
      But fortunately my company doesn't push us towards sales, it just pisses me off how much more they make.
      I'm a watercraft mechanic, and I see some tickets go up to $5,000+. It's disheartening seeing those tickets over and over and then seeing my check every two weeks.
      Think it's about time to go back to IT. I was making six figures there. The flipside is that I enjoy being a mechanic more than an IT Security guy. Decisions, decisions man.

      I would only add that a clean working environment is very important, BEFORE opening any engine. Taking a few minutes to pressure wash and blow dry the engine bay so you are not introducing dirt into the engine, not only makes for a nice clean area to work on, it saves tool and garage cleanup later and allows you to see cracks and damage that can be hidden by grime.

      But dealer ships have a time limit on trouble shooting. There is a time limit on the books. Whether it is car or sport utility? Dealers want profit. I was usually sent to trouble shoot. And it was rare. Well, I always found the fault. Always. 18 years. Always found it. There were some days

I love motors and wheels and when the 2 are combined, it makes for a way to have hella fun. I have a Honda 440 big bore I'm having trouble with and I'm hoping to get it running again in a couple weeks or so when the weather gets nicer. I have pretty much the same machine, EFI version a few years newer. I use it around my small farm. Perfect machine for that, I use it even more than the tractor. Put a 2" ball into that receiver and you will find that you can just back it off the trailer and then move that 6x12 trailer to the back of the Teryx. It will tow that trailer like a dream, especially in low gear. Mine will pull the trailer with two 5foot round hay bales on it. Perfect setup, pull the Teryx to a work site on the trailer and then unload the trailer and tow the trailer with the Teryx. I usually have the chainsaw and gas in the dump bed and then fill the trailer with wood. Tailgate is also perfect height for working on the saw when you refill the fuel and sharpen the chain. Fill the dump bed with shovels, saws and drills, and then the trailer with fenceposts, and you have the perfect setup for fencing. It really is a great machine. Way more versatile than a regular 4-wheeler.

    For the newbies with chainsaws and cutting firewood,measure your fireplace to see what length wood fits it best,16,18,20,24" etc and get that length bar and chain for your saw,make sure you have the cc size appropriate,and when cutting your firewood simply measure your cuts using the bar making a nick and cut across the nick making the ideal length firewood for your application... also the heavier weight oil one uses in the chain oiler in warmer months means better lubrication for the bar and chain,winter time a lighter weight oil is mandatory the further north one is.. Glad ya got a good deal and price on this sxs and it should last you many many years of miles and smiles and decades if taken care of...

Usually do it on everything we fix her 4 stroke, it's really amazing the difference it makes. At MMI we would spray a fine mist of water through and clear carbon out, this is way healthier and better. Give er a shot... great Job.

      When working on lawn mowers and someone brings in a mower with the issue beige it won’t start or they think it bent a lifter rod it seems that every time that it happens the oil is blacker then coal is and a lifter has stuck!!! I’ve ran across this issue probably a dozen different times and I’d say most or at least 9 to 10 are from the Kawasaki engines that most businesses like to run!!! But as long as the oil is changed in the correct hours of run time and a good oil ram each time I’ve never seen this issue!!! Also some come in with a new mower that they baught the year before and say it won’t start?? The first thing I ask is have you ever taken it back in after buying it to have the valves reset after running the mower for 8 to 10 hours?? Every time the answer is no they never said anything about having them checked!!! I’d go in reset the valves and it would start!!! I bet at least 99 out of a hundred people never have there valves reset after buying a new mower and end up with a no start or the mower having a hard to start issue!!!!

    "It's holding" is not the engine valve, it's the Schrader valve in the compression tester hose. Also, be careful with just letting plug wire dangle while doing a compression test. If the secondary ignition finds a different path to ground, it can actually cause something called carbon tracking allowing the spark to follow the track rather than through the spark plug.

  • @Wil_Liam1
    @Wil_Liam1 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Well known way to set the valves is to remove spark plug,insert a zip tie in hole and rotate engine until at top dead center after removing valve adjuster caps and look for cam lobes to be facing down away from rocker arms... adjust away,set valves to factory specs even with aftermarket cams unless you've swapped out to hardened aftermarket rockers and then adjust them to the cams and rockers specs and not the oem manufacturers specs...

    I have seen this before. The idle circuit jets were clogged and starving it for fuel. People that are not mechanically savvy think they know what they are doing and they they dump gas down the carbs, more often than not they dumb way to much gas in the barbs (you did not). This "washes" the cylinder of oil and results in a loss of compression (you introduced oil into the cylinders and the compression was regained). Even if they manage to get it to pop off for a few seconds, there is not enough run time to get oil back to the rings and the "wash" conditions remains. Then they bring it to a mechanic and the mechanic checks compression first, finds 10 psi in one and 35 psi in the other and prematurely calls it a blown engine and gives up. Clearly the dealership mechanic doesn't know how to check compression properly. Had the dealership introduced oil to the cylinders and performed a second compression check he would have saw what you saw -- compression jumped up to 50 psi in both. Once you got the compression back you dug in further and found the root problem -- clogged idle circuit jets. Congratulations on taking the chance you did and getting a nice machine with low hours at about 60% less than market value.

    Your compression gauge hold’s compression within itself to hold the reading, it has nothing to do with “valves holding”. Just FYI.
    Also, if you put some motor oil down the spark plug hole and do another compression test and the compression goes up, that tells you it’s rings/cylinder blow-by causing your low compression.

    You are incredibly talented. I wish I had your knowledge and talent. I am unable to fix things like this. I learned many years ago that I can undo all the screws and bolts but am unable to put the puzzle back together. Clearly I have no skills. This 69 Year old DAV, could sure use your help and experience buying a used 4x4 /side by side and getting it up and running.

    The Schrader valve holds the psi on the gauge. Unless you have a leak down compression tester. Which I've never seen.

    Get a hole saw and make a hole in the plastic above the radiator cap, works great for piece of mind. They handle larger tyres, suspension is built like a small car. Heavy duty plus. Tow hitch will haul the Polaris and others around the trails all day. They might not be fast but they are tough.

    I bought this same year machine only in camo. Previous owner gave up on it to. Gas was coming out of the exhaust. It cost me 80 dollars for a new fuel pump and an oil change to fix it, I've owned it for 3 years now it's been trouble free.

  • @bradenwuesthoff5639

    You dont have to put the engine at tdc to check valves. Just spin the engine till intake and exhaust valves are closed and the engine is in its compression stroke.

    • @Rat-Builder
      @Rat-Builder ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are so right. I adjusted the valves on a Cat 3412 with a remote starter button. I did it all the time with 3116, 3208, 3406, 3306, Polaris quads, virtually all engines. Never had an issue, and a lot faster than using a dial indicator or trying to find marks.

    • @bradenwuesthoff5639
      @bradenwuesthoff5639 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rat-Builder yep, you can watch the camshaft spin by hand and see that 70% of it is a circle and the valve does not move at all. Not many people realize this haha

    • @Rat-Builder
      @Rat-Builder ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bradenwuesthoff5639 Yea, on the Cat engines there is a hole in the bell housing to insert a timing bolt, and then you have to manually turn the engine over slowly until the pin lines up with the corresponding hole in the flywheel. Sometimes these holes are almost impossible to get at, and then there is the turning the engine over by hand. To heck with that! My way is so much easier, not to mention faster. I wonder how many "mechanics" know the 4 strokes IN ORDER of an internal combustion 4 cycle engine?

    Had the same issues with a 4 wheeler. Vacuum carb requires the right amount of vacuum. A "clean" old paper air cleaner as in my case was not letting enough air in that would only run for about 10 minutes then the excess vacuum would cause it to die. Held my hand over the intake without an air filter and it accelerated. New K& N paper air cleaner resolved all issues. I shared this with a friend who had the same model and his performace also improved.

    You don’t fill it to the middle on an oil change you fill it to the top mark, which is the full mark. The manual say it needs to be between the marks at the “least”, the middle just means you’re low about a pint. It is going to go down after you run it, due to filling the filter.
