I’ve been collecting similar tablecloths and napkins that are embroidered for very, very long time. I’ve always wanted to turn them into something to wear. I haven’t wanted to use the mist tablecloths because I didn’t want them to get stained. As you say, someone put a lot of work into them, and I want them to be displayed and admired. Some of them would make lovely curtains as well. Pillows. But I love the idea of summer top or dress. Thank you for your courage! Very inspiring.
Your top is fantastic, and I love that you took the time to ensure it was sewn beautifully including the crochet trim. Thanks for the free pattern information as well!
Watching these items being made wearable garments is interning me to want to take part of my vintage collection and do the same😊 Thanks for the pattern selections. I love your make😊
What a fantastic make Amelia. As usual your attention to detail is spot on. You've inspired me to get that old bed and table linen from the attic. I definitely think vintage fabric should be repurposed. Especially if everyone does it in the considered way you did.
I love your camisole, the placement of the pattern is spot on and so clever to also use the napkins to give yourself more fabric to work with. I don’t have a problem with people repurposing tablecloths. Why not showcase that beautiful hand embroidery in a garment rather than it languish in a drawer or attic with no-one seeing it? I remember your pal Amelia made an Agatha top out of a table cloth with stunning results. If pattern placement is done thoughtfully then it can really make the original handiwork shine ❤
I've collected many vintage tablecloths over the years & I cut the ones that are marked or stained, to use for making clothes or for quilting. I guess I will struggle to find them now though😂 Loving this series, especially as you are using what you have & not going buying more❤
Yes! There has been such a surge in popularity for these embroidered tablecloths - I think they will become harder to find now! Thank you so much for watching, it has been fun trying to use what I have and not buy new.
I made a tablecloth blouse a couple of years ago using the Pattern Scout Fern Top (view A), with the square neckline from the expansion pack. I used a white embroidered table cloth for the yoke part and a green solid table cloth for the rest. It turned out quite pretty, but now I'm tempted to remove the green and use white fabric instead. I really liked how the white looks.
Love your camy...perfect use of what you had available. Yes, I just finished a jpacket using a vintage tablecloth and I previously made a camp style shirt from the same tablecloth. I still have loads left....it's a huge tablecloth.
Repurposing is the way to go. When my parents died i found table cloth and napkin sets that had never been used , still in their box and wedding wishes on the cards , so they were 40 years old..oh how I wish I had kept them instead of taking them to the opshop, but that was nearly 30 years ago. Your cami is beautiful
Marvellous vlog! Really enjoying it, just as good as the “Bee”! I would definitely use a tablecloth! Throughout history fabric has been reused and repurposed, mended and altered. It’s only recently we have started throwing away unwanted clothes, when they could be reused…… patchwork blankets is an instant thought. Loving it😀
Thank you so much for your lovely comment - I am so glad you are enjoying the vlog series! I really do try to reuse things or to pass them on rather than throwing them away, so this was a really fun challenge to take on!
What a fantastic outcome. You did such an amazing job to give life to a lovely vintage tablecloth. How special! And a free pattern as well...its a win/win! Think I'll give that pattern a try. I actually use the Fabrics Store Phoebe linen tank pattern. Made a toile first to adjust, then, I have made so many since. Its a fabulous scrap buster pattern. Thank you for sharing you lovely make. ❤
Lovely camisole and a very timely sew a long! I’m about to make a dinosaur for my grandson and your advice on stitching scallops will be very helpful as I stitch the spines!😂 I also have inherited several tablecloths and doilies from my m-i-l and plan to make them into clothes, I know the plain cotton crochet ones will dye well, I just have to decide how to combine them! ❤
I've made this cami out of 2 scallop edged pillowcases. I had to extend the facing as fabric was a bit thin and landed mid bustline. I'm a 34DD and found the fit a bit too tight across the bust so passed it on to my sister. But I do agree it's a great free pattern and I'm inspired to try it again.
The bust was definitely more fitted than other camisoles I have made, but it seemed to work well with the shape of the scalloped neckline. I will definitely be trying it again too!
Have made the same top and made also out of a tablecloth but lengtend it so it became nightware. Love waring it and my boyfriend loves it too. Thank you for sharing
Lovely top, great work! I am not against reusing these linens, but I am against wasting them - which is what really happens because of the rushing on the Sewing Bee. I have made a 'tablecloth top' and, even though the original fabric had a hole in it, I still took forever to decide how/whether to cut it so as not to waste any. I find the waste of fabric caused by rushing the patttern challenge really difficult to watch. I know there needs to be a buzz and some excitement about whether garments will be finished or not, but most of the garments turn out to be unwearable which is such a waste of time, effort and resources. Thanks for making the videos, very much appreciated.
I really agree. It was a lovely top to make and I really enjoyed the challenge of making sure there was a little waste as possible. Thanks for watching!
Fabulous top Amelia, thank you. I have made this top previously from bought fabric however I have some cloths that my mum embroidered and you have given me the idea to use one. Many thanks.
Lovely top Amelia. I will definitely have a look at this pattern. So pleased you told us the pattern of the dress you was wearing as I was admiring it and it looks lovely on you. Have a good week x
The cammy looks fantastic Have recently bought some table cloths and crocheted doilies To remake a Decjuba blouse from my daughter She’s size M I’m XL , so lots to do. You have got my sew Jo going Will send photo when I’m done I love what you make and your pattern and colour choices. We are a series behind here but looking forward to next weeks vlog Ka kite ano
I have so many lace tablecloths that have been hand knitted or crocheted by my grandmother and mum that many will be donated after my mum passes. I hope that they will find new homes and new purpose when the time comes, even if that means they will get cut up and worn. My nephew certainly has no interest in inheriting a hundred lace doilies.
Hi Amelia, The napkins would have crocheted together in a wink of an eye. Do you crochet? As all good grannies I make “Afghan” rugs for my grand-daughters to either wrap up in to read a book or just an extra layer for their beds. When my hands were younger and smooth I would embroider supper cloths and napkins for my nieces. I must send this video to them in case they would like to re-purpose their cloths into something more useful. Love your camisole - so pretty. 🦘🇦🇺
Thank you so much Kaye! I would love to learn to crochet - not a skill I have been able to master yet though sadly. Those afghan rugs for your grand daughters and embroidered supper cloths for your nieces sound so special!
What a sweet and unique camisole!!! Love the idea of using vintage embroidery!! It’s perfect!!
Thank you so much!

Love the camisole, brilliant use of a tablecloth xx
What a fantastic make Amelia. As usual your attention to detail is spot on. You've inspired me to get that old bed and table linen from the attic. I definitely think vintage fabric should be repurposed. Especially if everyone does it in the considered way you did.
Thank you so much Libby. It is so nice to have the tablecloth made up now and it will get a lot more use this way I think!
Ooh brilliant use of the lovely table cloth. Love your camisole. Yes, I would definitely re purpose vintage table linen.
Thank you!

I think I will have to have a look in the charity shops with 'new eyes' . I look forward to see what you do next week. X

Thank you! 😊
Beautiful job on all your makes but I especially enjoyed your creativity on your tablecloth camisole. Great job! So inspiring.

I am enjoying your take on the sewing bee Amelia. Your top is gorgeous and so wearable.
Thank you so much, Annette!
I have my grandaughters here staying so no time to watch your vlog this morning. Look forward to watching later x

That is such a beautiful pattern. I am sure it looks beautiful. Vintage tablecloths can all be such different colours, can't they!
Great top, I’m now on the look out for vintage tablecloths
Thank you! I hope you find one!
Love your camy...perfect use of what you had available. Yes, I just finished a jpacket using a vintage tablecloth and I previously made a camp style shirt from the same tablecloth. I still have loads left....it's a huge tablecloth.
Wow, that must be a big tablecloth! A camp shirt would look gorgeous made from table linen.
Repurposing is the way to go. When my parents died i found table cloth and napkin sets that had never been used , still in their box and wedding wishes on the cards , so they were 40 years old..oh how I wish I had kept them instead of taking them to the opshop, but that was nearly 30 years ago.

Thank you for your lovely comment. It is so special when you find these embroidered cloths in op shops, I always wonder what their story is.
I totally would cut a tablecloth to make a garment! I mean, look how nice your top turned out. ❤
Thank you! It was a really fun project to work on.

The Etty would make a beautiful nightwear piece - what a great idea! Thanks so much for sharing!
Beautiful cami! Great to give a new life to a lovely tablecloth.
Thank you! It was such a fun project.
Fabulous so many gorgeous table clothes to use 😊😊😊
I was so glad to get this one sewn up!
Oh it’s so pretty!! I have a selection of vintage tablecloths and it’s got me thinking of what I could do now as they’re hardly ever used x
I felt so sad they weren't getting used - but then so glad I could make a wearable top from it!

Omg, I just finished a dress from linen tablecloth!
Amazing! I think a tablecloth dress would be so lovely. ❤️

I am planning to make a Blouse out of a floral sheet but I could not bring myself to do it to a tablecloth I would feel funny.
I think it would have felt funny for one I have close emotional connection to.
@sewamelia yeah I think so too.
