Thailand is famously one of the few countries to have never been colonized by a European power, despite being right in the middle of a bunch of other European colonial possessions, so how did they manage to escape being colonized?

After receiving approximately ten million comments about my pronunciation of Thailand in this video, it really makes me wonder how you all pronounce Taiwan. Seriously, people.

In first 3 minute, you pronouce right. But, in later half. You just spoke Taiwan instead of Thailand. You just swap country in later part.

The problem is not the syllable "Thai/Tai" but the syllable "Land/Wan".
You can use the Google translate, type in the "Thailand" and "Taiwan", select language as English, and click on the "speak" icon to hear how to pronounce them.
Nice presentation though. Thanks for your work. ^^

Not true~Thailand never thought of joining the Axis Powers. But because of pressure from the Japanese Imperial Army, Thailand had to join. Because Thailand did not have enough troops to defeat the Japanese army at that time.😅

The one phase that I as a Thai students have heard when I was little is that "We agree to lose our legs, in order to keep the heart and soul" เรายอมเสียดินแดนประเทศราช เพื่อรักษาเอกราชไว้
Someone also said that there is a con comes with not being colonized is that our children have hard time learning English (so as Japan). But most of our tradition is not destroyed by other country.
Thailand is also a place that refugee took as their destination to save their lives because our land is abundance and we are normally generous. In my hometown I have many freinds that family moved from Vietnam, China in Grandfather generations, but they are grown as Thai people. Most refugee does not considered themselves as foreigner anymore. They called Thailand their home.
I'm very grateful that I was born and raised in this country. There are some flaws in politics, but I still love Thai food, Thai weather and Thai people.

UK will not attack to Siam by some of reason but they take a lot of benifit from Siam, it was unfair but it was fine compared with the attitude of beleve and situation, France got enough as well 3M. frank with indochina land and a lot of resources. WW2 Thai was not lose but we have to paid of

    In the case of Thailand:
The first Europeans to explore the world by boat were Portugal and Holland ... They did not have a primary goal of colonization. Focus on trade Which countries around the world are welcome
Later, after the industrial revolution in Europe Industrial weapons were created. England, France and Spain were using weapons to rob the world.
Thailand is the goal of both England and France to seize colonialism and psychological intervention, causing the broken society to unity in each country. Both colonial countries agreed to take over Indochina. Dividing the colonies to the Chao Phraya River In the middle of Thailand, England was able to conquer parts of the land. To the north (Shan State), west (Myeik, Dawei) and the south (Kelantan, TrangKanu, palis and Langkawi Island) of Thailand first. But England has a big battle with China and India Therefore only a Frenchman remains determined to rob Thailand Sending troops to seize Lan Chang, Champasak, ฺBurapa County, Koh Kong, Trat and Chanthaburi provinces of Thailand, causing Thailand to develop an army with modern weapons to open the Great Asia Burapha War with France. Successfully expelled France from the territory, with Japan as the mediator to negotiate peace The result of that war Thailand has almost all of the land that foreigners have robbed back ...
But in no time The Second World War occurred. Japanese troops entered Thailand. By contracting that if Japan wins the war, it will return the rest of Thailand that the foreigners robbed back to Thailand. However, Thailand still operates an underground policy to support the Allies called "Free Thai Movement" concurrently
After the end of World War 2, Japan lost the war. Causing Thailand to struggle to show their allies about the Thai Free Mission in order to be recognized as a coalition country, with China, Russia voting for Thai requests, but America and France Claiming as a sculpture of war Seize the land that Thailand has recovered from the war with France Returned to France as before
    ...
Thai history And the situation continued until the present time Show that: No matter what happens Colonialist Still always being a hunter/robber of the world in order to find benefits for himself without consciousness of humanity ...

@Temple of Ridicule I don't care what you're talking about, because I'm not living there any more, and I know the real history of my country, not the one dictated by Putin and Co. But, about the video, you can read about close friendship between the King of Siam Rama V and the last Tsar of Russian Empire - Nicholas II. One of the favourite sons of Rama V, Prince Chakrobonse, was studying in Russia, in the Tsar Page Academy, and the Tsar was paying for his studying and living, not like other King's sons, who were studying in England and the King had to pay for them himself. Moreover, the Prince brought a Russian wife to Siam after he graduated.

So, God bless you and try to find love and peace inside, it can heal your wounds, poor boy. And I never thought or considered what you are calling me... I'm living in peace and harmony with myself and with the World, so nobody is against me, the whole world is protecting me and taking care of me.

Interestingly, there's an historical Japanese Settlement (next to the Chao Phraya River at Ayutthaya called Baan Yeepoon (essentially Village of Japan) at Ayutthaya. It was formerly occupied by the Japanese. Today, it's an historical park, kind of like a museum. While Japan never officially colonized the country, Thailand was allied with Japan during the war.

Thank you for doing a very good job covering a history much overlooked in the west. Just a few corrections and some extra information:
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive in Ayutthaya and had a significant effect, introducing foods and ingredients that have become staples, and loanwords that are still part of the language. They also brought medicine and weapons used in the Siam-Burma wars.
Siam was the name given to The Tai Kingdoms by foreign countries, it was not formally used by Thais until King Mongkut in the mid-19th Century, and this was largely a nod to the western nations that were returning and rebuilding affluence. During the reign of his brother, King Rama III, it was The Chinese who supplied much needed trade for the new capital, but following The Opium Wars China's dominance faded. King Rama III had managed to acquire a personal fortune in trade before becoming king (he was not originally in line to be king, but that's another story) which he set aside to be used in case of national emergency. King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, did use this money to pay France a huge ransom after France stole Siamese territory and sent gunships up The Chaophraya River; a move The British admonished The French for.
After the fall of Ayutthaya it was only a matter of months, not years, before King Taksin The Great founded a new capital in Thonburi, reunited the kingdoms, and took over the Lao kingdoms. He was then overthrown in a coup and the capital was relocated across the river to Rattanakosin.
The reign of Rama VI (also the king who devised naming the kings of The Chakri Dynasty Rama I, II, III, etc.) was one of nationalism after the sweeping modernisation of reformist King Chulalongkorn The Great-who was hailed globally as an important head-of-state and was the first Siamese king to tour Europe. Rama VI sent a division of the newly modernised Siamese military to Europe to show that the nation was still a global player. There was a failed coup attempt during his reign owing to the extravagance you mentioned.
This failed coup was a point of discussion by Thai students in Europe, which included Pridi Bhanomyong and Plaek Phibul Songkhram, during the reign of Rama VII. After returning to Siam they organised the bloodless revolution and formed The People's Party, and a constitutional monarchy. The story becomes complicated after that, but a major point is that Pridi Bhanomyong and Phibul Songkhram differed widely in their politics. During World War II Phibul Songkhram signed a treaty with Japan and declared war on The Allies. Pridi Bhanomyong intercepted that declaration and received American aid to operate The Seri-Thai freedom fighters which undermined Japanese activity, gave intelligence, and provided aid to the P.O.W.s along The Death Railway. After the war The U.S. protected Thailand from having to pay retribution, and Thailand didn't request the land stolen by The French which Japan had promised to return to them. This has remained a sticky political issue to the present with The International Court recently having to rule on whether Phrea Vihear is located in Thailand or in Cambodia, and over which a war nearly started, and of course led directly to The Indochina Wars (A.K.A The Vietnam War) when The Allies restored French colonial power.

Yes I agree that it would be odd to hear but I never really heard it to be otherwise or paid attention to it since I already know from the title the context of the video that it's about Thai/Siamese history and not Taiwanese.

Before the establishment of Rattanakosin Kingdom with Bangkok as the capital in 1782, the unified Thai Kingdom was ruled by many Kingdoms and Dynasties. There were also many Kingdoms, both of the Thais and and of other ethnic groups, existed on the area which became Thailand today. Some of those Kingdoms existed before the establishment of the first unified Thai Kingdom, Sukhothai Kingdom, but later were annexed into the Thai Kingdom or the neighboring Kingdoms.
The Kingdoms and Dynasties which ruled the unified Thai Kingdom in the past were:
    1.Sukothai Kingdom (1238 - 1438)
Phra Ruang Dynasty - 9 Kings
    2.Ayutthaya Kingdom (1350 - 1767)
    Uthong Dynasty - 3 Kings
    Suphannaphum Dynasty - 13 Kings
(The number is disputed between 13 and 14.)
    Sukhothai Dynasty - 7 Kings
(This Dynasty descended from Phra Ruang Dynasty.)
Prasat Thong Dynasty - 4 Kings
Ban Phlu Luang Dynasty - 6 Kings
    3.Thonburi Kingdom (1767 - 1782)
    Thonburi Dynasty - 1 King.
