@@user-tv4ih2kq6r I see the miscommunication. OP didn't mean 'join them' as in 'get conquered by them' but as in 'copy their techniques'. + funnily enough, if you look at the results, colonization is an innovation program, since anyone who was colonized or colonization or had to deal with it was ingrained with a desire to modernize to defend themselves. So it's like an indirect & unintentional modernization program
@@freddy4603 well... the purpose of those innovations wasnt for the people of their colonies; it was to strengthen their colonial territories to maintain their grasp of power. It just so happen that these things were inherited to their colonies when they got their independence. Addition as well that its learned common practice, so aligning their political system and such will now be more suitable because it is formed already in that way. The idea is the colonies have to adapt to these changes, not their colonizers granting them some magical wishes. So it wasnt all due to "colonization" rather the people who needs to adapt and survive in due of "colonization", that birthed to these innovations. Nonetheless; my point is they "joined them" because they need to adapt, if they dont-theyll lose their sovereignity. They "join" adopt to offer negotation and submit to survive, not to be a some sort of business partner. Colonizers doesnt stop colonizing, because youre acting like them. Colonizers will only think twice, if you can offer something interesting than your land-as luckily they still have the opportunity to do that.

British Empire: Haha stupid Indochina country like Siam would never have a drip The king out of nowhere from Oxford and a Supreme jacket: How do you do, fellow westerner British Empire: *NVM false alarm, he actually got a drip*
It's also insane that Thailand is in the top ten tourism destinations in the world and yet also has had more military coups since 1950 than any other nation. How have they been able to keep enough stability for a robust tourism sector while having so much political instability?
Let them fight. As for us, we live our lives. Crazy politicians quarreling, What does it have to do with normal people? As long as no bullets or bombs landed on pedestrians's heads. Whoever wants to fight with whoever? Fu.k it. And most Thai people's lives have not changed. Everyone still needs to eat. So we continue to work and earn money. And tourism generates a lot of income for the country. Thai people are easy to smile and have a service mind.
Because almost every single coups are from the army, supported by the palace and the upper class. After the coup the people protested and got a somewhat democratic government for a while, until the army decided to take power again.
One more major reason is that the Thai king at the time is a a close friend and ally of with the Tsar of Russia. This means at least FR/UK need to consider the possibility of Russia getting involved if they plan to colonize Siam. A very strategic move in international diplomacy from the Thai king.
@@anyone1200 This is also why China was never fully colonized by the British. Up north the Russians could invade. Staying south, the British could still make profit off the Opium they sold.
@@anyone1200 France and UK didn't "fear" Russia when they won the Crimean War. They didn't "fear" Russia when they built the good relations leading to what will be the Entente during WWI. They didn't "fear" Russia when UK fought proxy wars in Central Asia. Russia didn't impede colonialism in Asia and Russia wasn't a part of the equation when considering colonizing Siam. " He was a friend of the Tsar"... come on, you're talking about european leaders that were all cousins but fought WW1 anyway. Who cares about mondaine "friendship" when it comes to imperialism. I'm sure the Tour of Europe of Rama was a success but I'm not sure in the other hand that Auguste Pavie and his boys cared that much.
More like if they become de facto under British and French influence and do all the reforms they want then Siam won't get fully annexed. You can bet your Siamese cats that Siam was full of useful idiots for the Western powers after the reforms and sending the elites overseas to study.
Didn’t help the Cherokee. Siam could’ve been completely Westernized but it would’ve been all over if super valuable resources were found in Thailand or if there was a drive for European settlement. Of course that isn’t to discount the diplomatic efforts and strategic thinking of the Siamese themselves.
Actually more like "I will be like you but if you still attack me I will call your colonial rival for help". Japan was like "I will be like you and I will make my own colonial empire so you still get no ideas".
😉 That's what Vietnamese said about China after 1,000 years of Chinese colonization when they lost land that are now Canton and Yunnan. Or what #FreeTibet says now about China, and Ukraine and the Balkan states said about Russia. Real pains in the butt.
You forgot to mentioned the main reason why Thailand never ever under colonize. The fact that, massive thanks to The Great Emperor of Russia Nicholas II who was a friend of King Chulalongkorn of Thailand. So, French and English afraid to against Russian if they invaded Thailand or Siam at that time.
The King of Siam: "I'm on my knees and pleasing you in every way! Please don't kill my people and take my power away from me! Just do what you want with Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam! They have what you need! We have nothing!"
There is a difference between withstanding and avoiding colonization. They could never withstood an full scale invasion if the European powers really wanted to. Especially being surrounded by 2 to 3 European superpowers that could hit them from all sides and they have no allies as their neighbors all hate them so one will come to their aid. The European already got all the neighboring countries do they really need to take over every single damn country in the world. They avoiding it but making major concessions to the Brits the French. Like giving Laos to the French. That tis almost like losing before even fighting. If you were really a bad ass you will tell them to go home packing and how dare they even make threats to you. Yo don't negotiate and make deals with enemies who shouldn't even be there in the first place. The Thai people and country likes to brag they were never taken over. They don't tell you how they have to bend over and ass kissing to avoid being taken over. Same thing with the Japanese during WW2 to avoid being taken over by the Japanese. Guess you can say they were smart to avoid suffering a great loss of life and destruction from wars. They got lucky there were a buffer between two superpowers. If that wasn't the case they would have surely been taken over for sure. If the White man says I can said my ships anywhere I want in your waters and there a damn thing you can do about it then you are their b whether or not you admit it. Avoid a war be becoming more like your enemy and joining them. The Siamese became more European. The European didn't become more Siamese. They have already won when you have to be come more like them. Not saying it was a bad thing as it modernized Thailand however it should be a choice not by necessity. I will give it to them at least the leadership knew it couldn't[ withstand the European powers so they did the most prudent thing and that is to avoid a massacre. They try to be on the good grace of the European superpowers they did what they thought was best for them at the time.
You can also see this westernization in Thai architecture (palaces)where the roof top is traditional Thai but the bottom half is European. This is called “Falang sai Chada”. Also the clothing as well, top half is Victorian and bottom half is Joong Kraben. The king said to the Thai people during the period of westernization, “We will pretend to look like Europeans, but we will never be them”.
The new flag was also designed along European lines. Their Parliament and legal system was also designed along European lines. Having said that, it is a corrupt as corrupt can be.
Sounds like all those people coming to Europe. Reee but colonizitions so you deserve it! Actually my country never had colonies and were always slaves for the same people that come in right now and hold their hand up for free shit
They will, however, either belong to YAHWEH EL ELOHIM or be destroyed by Him for siding with Lucifer, and ditto for everyone else that is in this world.
Mostly people said because of the buffer state agreement and the closed relationship with Tsar Nicolas II that made Thailand survived But the fact is, King RamaV was a smarter than that. He invited Danish company to set the rail system, invited Prussian company to set the electricity system and Russian investor for the Forest Concession to balance the benefit in this country. If the British or French wanted to invade to this country, they will have the conflict with their neighbors countries in Europe.
Much respect to Thailand for their history. Although the monarchy is a darkly different beast today, I admire their historic role of playing the Europeans against each other. Their history is very Game-of-Thrones-y lol
I would say the played the Europeans against each other The french and British could of easily colonised all of Thailand with ease if they wanted , it’s just that the Siamese just offered to be a neutral buffer , the two colonial powers accepted
I do respect them for maintaining their independence, however I still find it hard to forgive them for conquering and annexing Pattani, a sovereign Malay kingdom that in an alternate reality would have joined the nation of Malaysia in independence. Even today many Malay Pattani reminisce and are still nostalgic about their independence from Thailand. In fact if it wasn't for the British my father who came from the state of Perlis in Malaysia would still be a Thai citizen today, since Thailand used to conquer over all the northern Malay states in Malaysia today. So yeah good for Thailand that they maintained independence, but don't think they are just some innocent state in South East Asia. They can be just as imperialistic as the Europeans.
@@aimanmarzuqi4804 I completely understand. The Thai monarchy, overall, has a very dark autocratic history. They are not without sin, historically. Thus, me comparing them to GoT lol

Sounds like a Civ 6 reference to Teddy Roosevelt. But still, its a good strategy on Thailand's part. Resist and be crushed or talk things through and reorganize/westernize.
There was no big incentive to colonize Siam as it was already willing to listen and get along with Europeans for most part to avoid colonization & conflict altough some of it did got conquerored but rest remained as buffer state.

As a Thai you did an amazing job in explaining everything! Having said that, the final map of Thailand at the end is not accurate at all. The French took a cambodia as well.
You mean, Thailand is what used to be territory of the Khmer(Cambodia) empire. Modern day Thai were once mostly Khmer. This is why Thai language are almost identical to Khmer. When Siam invaded Khmer, the people and territory became part of Siam. Ancient temples in Thailand were built by Khmer, not by Siam. Cambodian can read the writing on their temples. Can Thai read the writing on their temple? I doubt it. To make my common short, Thailand and Cambodia should be brothers of peace and love, not sworn enemies as it has proven throughout history. Cambodia is struggling to fight 2 foes of the east(Vietnam) and west(Thailand) who always wait for an opportunity to take more territory from Cambodia. South Vietnam was also part of Khmer(Cambodia) territory until 1949 when the French signed away that territory to Vietnam. Vietnam ambition is to take the remaining land of Cambodia through various deceptive political manuveur means, if it can't take by military forces. Vietnam has already conquered Laos, covertly. If and when Cambodia become part of Vietnam, Thailand is not safe from Vietnam's ambition. So Thailand, you will meet your match when that time come. Cambodia won't be the nation you will be fighting, it's Vietnam that you'll be fight with. As for now, it would be wise for Thailand and Cambodia to be very close tie economically and militarily for ones national interest.
@@chamnap2990 Do you have any scientific evidence for linkage of Angor Wat and Khmer people nowadays? Khmer history is written by the French who come to SEA region in the 16th century, not the 7th century.

I'm Thai and i want to share some siamese perspective here. (You forget Russian)It's true that Siam will be a perfect buffer for two empires but Siam actually thought that it will be a disaster if they came to an agreement, so the king RamaV went on European tour in order to establish some friendly relationship as such Russian and it work. The map showed in RamaVI isn't correct as we already lost the western of Cambodia to FIC in 1907 as well as some today northern Malaysia to British empire in 1909 which were all happen in RamaV regime.

Switzerland was technically neutral during the war but... Well, yes Thailand was on a different scale in terms of collaboration but their borders were porous so it's easy to understand how they tried to deal with WW2. Am pretty sure England, France, and the US understood that.
I wouldn't say the population was more important. For the Thai rulers, the most important thing is their hold of power. They are always ready to sacrifice some population and other things to make sure that they are still in charge.

Born in the US, King Bhumibol (RIP, a remarkable leader), also spent many years in Lausanne and environs in Switzerland, forging close international relationships in those countries that helped the development of Thailand.
Yes, King Rama 9 (King Bhumibol) was the Grandson of King Chulalongkorn but I think one of the most important thing it was about education. He decided to send many of his children to study in Europe such as UK, France, Germany or Russia and also USA to let his children learn about what do the european like or think or even the mentality or I can say that to learn the strengths & weaknesses of those countries and in the same time to bulid up the relationship with them because since many of Thai princes were studied in their countries and many of them used to enter into European Military Services. So that's why we have never been colonized by the European since our Princes educated from European countries.

Thank you for making a video about Thai history. By the way, there are many points that you should add in the video. 1. The Modernization process of Siam began duing the reign of King Rama IV or King Mongkut, King Chulalongkorn's father. During his monkhood, he learned English and many Western Knowledge from American missionary, so he learned that the world geopolitics was changed and Siam had to adapt to survive. After he became King, he began the modernization in Siam by many ways, such as adapting some Western styles, hiring foreigners to teach his children, including King Chulalongkorn, English and other modern knowledge, and sending students to study aboard. The process was continued by King Chulalongkorn. 2. Another factor was the Russo - Siamese alliance. King Chulalongkorn and Tsar Nicholas II were close friend and their alliance was another factor to make Siam survived. 3. In the Reign of King Rama IV, Siam signed the Bowring Treaty with the British. This treaty took Siam to the modern global trade and economy. The name of the Treaty was taken from Sir John Bowring, the Governor of Hong Kong who was the British representative in the signing of the Treaty.
@@707arnie The King and I or Anna and the King of Siam is partly fictional. It is the novel by Margaret Landon. She adapted the story from two of Anna's books, the English Governess in the Siamese Court, and A Romance of the Harem.

Indirectly, they also interfere with Thai politics through the army and corrupt politicians with close ties to them. Thailand would be better off as a republic or at least, a constitutional monarchy like the UK or Japan and not in its current form. It’s ironic that the movie 'The King and I' was banned in Thailand, not because of the story, but because it failed to show how progressive the country was. This was illustrated in a scene where the King was using chop-sticks to eat his meal. He was appalled that people should think that he was so backwards that he didn’t use a knife, fork and spoon. This aspect was totally lost in this film.
Something huge not mentioned in the video: Southeast Asian wars were often fought to gain people, not land. Kingdoms often had more farm land than farm workers, so wars were waged in which conquered people would be brought back to work the land, and the newly conquered land abandoned. So when France demanded Laos be given to Indochina, the French (westerners who thought in terms of territory) didn't realize or care that Siam (who thought in term of population) moved as many Lao people as they could onto Siamese territory. That's the primary reason why today there are approximately 3.5 million Lao people in Laos, but over 22 million Lao people in Thailand, where they are known as Isaan people.
That a very interesting, as a isaan people myself am curios why there is isaan language, today thailand have 4 language as thai language(used by people that live in the center province of thailand),isaan language(used by isaan people that live in north-east of thailand), south language(used by people that live in southern province of thailand)and north language used by people that live in northern province of thailand, while isaan language and thai language is closely relatable to each other but south language and north language is very different story but we still use the same alphabet anyway so where we come from or when we come to thailand should not matter anymore, we live in present and not the past.(our future look fucked by the way)
Your statement confirms the written accounts on Thailand having slaves. Historically, the Thai word meant free for themselves because the non-Thai population were considered their slaves. The Thais are really good at rewriting their history as we currently define Thailand to mean freedom.

Buffer state? Nonsense. All you need is a few dozen kilometres of land as a buffer, not a vast country. I’m still no wiser as to how Thailand managed to retain its independence.
I was told by my relatives in Korea that missionaries in Asia were more or less a guise for colonisation and one of the reasons Thailand avoided being colonised was that they are a strongly Buddhist country (95% are Buddhist) and it was not easy for the missionaries to convert the Thais, especially the Thai Kings. After King Narai died, the members of government killed or expelled all westerners out of their fear and dislike of the missionaries. And in the 1820's, when the Protestants came, apparently 22 missionaries failed to convert a single Thai in 18 years. That is quite amazing if it is true. I don't know if this is one of the reasons for not being colonised though.
@@lvb131 - Exactly. This what I’ve heard as the main reasons. Missionaries, whether they knew it or not, were often the first stage of the colonisation process, and Siam was very protective of its religion and customs. Brings to mind that great film with Yul Brynner, The King and I - about an English school mistress influencing the King of Siam. I think it was based on a true story.
@@lvb131 But their malay counterparts (now southern siam, Malaysia, Singapura till Indonesia) also didn't convert to christian. And still got colonized. I think another big factor other than diplomacy is Thailand -like Japan- has settled with a big land and one king. That plus diplomacy are big factors. Unlike their malay counterparts that have many kingdom and sultan. But still can argue because China also had an emperor still got occupied.
From my study of Thai history there was one other major reason Siam remained independent that is not mentioned here. In 1833, the USA & Siam signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce, formalizing diplomatic relations and securing a special status to Americans that was not given to other foreigners. This agreement exists to this day and was updated in 1966 - so under this treaty Americans can establish companies in Thailand with less than 50% Thai ownership and be treated like a Thai company - no other foreigners can do this. In return, the USA provided protection for Thailand against the colonial powers. It ensured independence with a touch of US protectorate status. That at least is my understanding... Anyone else know about this or can confirm??
no, britain and france dominated thailand and annexed territory and forced unequal treaties on it. The USA was militarily irrelevant until the turn of the 20th century and then still well behind britain and france. Thailand remained nominally independent because it was a buffer between french indochina and british india.
@@Paul-ft9dn - Interesting... Then why would Siam sign the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with the USA? And why wouldn't Britain and France demand the same special treatment provided to the US? I've actually set up a Thai company based on that treaty so that I didn't need a local partner and could own it 100% outright. If I were British or French I would have needed a local partner with 51% min of ownership.
Nepal also never colonized but loss big land just like Thai. Brits unable to take those land to Britain in ship. Later British ended treaty by which they seize our land before leaving India. Brits did and end treaty but never got our land and Nepal also never got that land.

The final map in the end of the video isn’t correct. Siam loses more territories, one is the east (Seam reap, Battambang and Sisophon in Cambodia nowadays.) to French Indo-China and the another in the south (Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu in Malaysia) to British Malaya. Actually, the territories those Siam losses isn’t the part of the Siam Kingdom. They are just the colonies of Siam and they also have their own king or leader. And in this situation, Siam forced Chiangmai and Pattanee to get the annexation to become part of The Kingdom of Siam and transform to Kingdom of Thailand as you see as in the current map.

I believe it was King Chulalongkorn's father, Rama IV (the king featured in "The King and I" and "Anna and the King of Siam") who initiated the westernization process specifically to fend off colonial tendencies. King Chulalongkorn is known as Thailand's 'Abraham Lincoln' for ending the practice of slavery in the country.
It was Rama lV started it, and Rama V carried on the grand scheme. The father employed Anna for a good reason, you see. Rama V travelled to Europe and become close friend with Russian's Tsar. His reign was always on the heat of Colonization at the time.
The best stand up fighting art on Earth comes from Thailand. The only way to beat a good Muay Thai fighter is to grapple them. You aren’t going to outstrike them. Muay Thai is something else.
Fun Facts 1. 2. 3. Another factor which made Siam survived was the Russo - Siamese alliance. King Chulalongkorn and Tsar Nicholas II were close friend and their alliance was another factor to make Siam survived. The King also sent one of his son, Prince Chakrabongse Bhuvanath, to study in Russian Military Academy under the patronage of the Tsar. The Prince married Russian woman and he was the great - grandfather of Chulachak Chakrabongse or Hugo, a famous Thai actor and singer. 4. The name Siam was changed to Thailand in 1939. 5. During his study in England. King Vajiravudh or Rama VI read many English books and he translated many books, plays, such as The Merchant of Venice, from English into Thai. 6. After the Fall of France to German troops in 1940. Thai Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkram, who also studied in the military school in France, saw the opportunity to take the parts Siam lost to France in Paknam Incident in 1893 back, so he decided to send the forces to attack the French occupied areas in Indochina. This event became the Franco - Thai War of 1940. There are many videos about this war. The war ended by the negotiation with the Imperial Japan acted as the mediator. Thailand gained the territories back. Unfortunately, after World War II ended in 1945. As the Thai government had to negotiated with the allied forces to not be the lost side. Thailand had to send the territories back to France. Those territories are parts of Laos and Cambodia today.
You forgot to mention Portugal, who plays a significant role in modernizing Thai foods and cultures. Many modern-day Thai dishes are adapted from Portugal traditional dishes.
@@agawd3364 Hi there! The most famous dish that the Portugese brought to Thailand (Ayutthaya Kingdom) in 1700s was the "Fios de ovos", called "Foi Thong" in Thai. Great video. Thanks, The Thai word for westerner "farang" comes from the french word "francaise" which means french or France. Thai pronounciation causes them to pronounce it f-a-rang-set. Well? Thailand didn't exactly escape from colonization by the Europeans/West. Thailand did lose Laos, Cambodia, Eastern parts of Myanmar, and Northern parts of Malaysia. They lost a huge chunk of their territories they once had. Now Thailand is a very small nation and no longer big as it once was.

One of the reasons was my great grandpa, Nazzareno Galassi. He was an officer of Giuseppe Garibaldi. After finished with service for Garibaldi in late 1800s, him and his comrades bought a ship. They departed from Ancona port with intention to go to India to search for diamonds but ran into heavy storm damaged the ship and landed in Siam. He decided to stay in Siam and work for the king with his military skills as an officer. Help keep the intruders out. Perfect story for movie, film producers.

There are still lands and historical monuments left of my ancestor. My dad rightfully own some parts of the land aswell and they will become my land in the future. My ancestor existed during the French attempt to colonize Siam in the 19th century. My great great grandfather was Phraya Prachantaprathet Thani. Many Thai people discuss that the Fall of Ayutthaya to the Burmese Kingdom of Ava in 1767 had the legacy to the Siamese ruling class. While the Burmese could not adapt the policy to survive due to the same reason like China, underestimating the West. For Siam, after that event, any Siamese foreign and military policy were conducted carefully to avoid such an event like that.
Thank you for sharing your video In my opinion, the main reason why Thailand managed to escape colonization is the Thai king's management. The buffer state idea in the video is just an excuse to obscure the fact that the French and British empires failed to seize Siam. It shouldn't be the main factor to explain why Thailand could manage to escape colonization for many reasons. 1. At that time, in all aspects, especially in terms of military power and technology, it was impossible for Siam to fight against the French and British empires. For example, the British empire forced Siam to agree upon many unequal treaties such as the Bowring Treaty. The French empire made many attempts to provoke Siam in order to create war with Siam (one example is illustrated in this video). The French knew that they would win if they had the battle with Siam and it would be a good reason to take a grip on Siam (Like Great Britain did with Burma). The Thai king had to be patient and cautious of any act that could lead to the war with France because there was no way that Siam could fight against them. It was painless for France and the British empire to expropriate Siam if they really want to do. If Taking Siam was that easy, why didn’t they simply do that?
2. There were other French and British colonies that shared borders without any buffer state such as the borders between the British colony in Egypt and French territories in the north region of Africa or the borders between Nigeria (British Empire) and North Africa (France). They could even collaborate to seize all land in Siam and negotiate who would get the lion's share as they did in other parts of the world. They could manage like when Prussia, Russia, and the Austrian empire seized and divided Poland in the past. If the French and British took Siam, they could secure their empire in the strategically geographic center of Indo-China peninsular in the land of Siam. Moreover, they could even build a shortcut canal to link the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean and exploit the benefit from Siam as they did to Egypt from the Suez Canal. Why not? If the British and French empires have the power and chance to take Siam back then, did it make any sense to leave Siam alone? 3. There are much better reasons to explain how Siam escaped colonization. For instance, Diplomatic strategy of King Chulalongkorn, the Thai kings were cautious of the threat from The Western Superpowers since Siam’s neighbors, namely Vietnam and Burma, were colonized. King Chulalongkorn also sought diplomatic relations with other superpower countries to balance the power of the French and British empires in Siam. He had traveled to many European countries and strengthened diplomatic relations with them - namely Germany (the formidable opponent of the French and British empires) and the Russian Empire (the Ally of the French and British empires at that time). Especially, the Thai king and the emperor of Russia, Tsar Nicolas II, had a close relation, with the picture that was published in French newspapers, L'ILLUSTRANTION, September 11, 1987, the day that The Thai king arrived France. (commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:King_and_Tsar.jpg) At least, because of the relation between the Thai king and other European Superpowers, the French and British empires couldn’t just invade and simply take the whole land of Siam as they did in other regions of the world. To recap, taking Siam as the buffer state is just one excuse for the French and British empires to conceal the truth that they failed the mission to seize Siam. It would be too shameful for them to accept that they couldn’t take control of an underdeveloped and inferior country like Siam, which is understandable why they had this defense. This was good for Siam too because, for all intents and purposes, Siam managed to escape colonization eventually.

@@freddy4603 well... the purpose of those innovations wasnt for the people of their colonies; it was to strengthen their colonial territories to maintain their grasp of power. One more major reason is that the Thai king at the time is a a close friend and ally of with the Tsar of Russia. This means at least FR/UK need to consider the possibility of Russia getting involved if they plan to colonize Siam. A very strategic move in international diplomacy from the Thai king.

Didn’t help the Cherokee. Siam could’ve been completely Westernized but it would’ve been all over if super valuable resources were found in Thailand or if there was a drive for European settlement.

I'm Thai and i want to share some siamese perspective here.

Chopsticks came from China and they’re better. You can also use them for other things. 😂.
That's interesting...any sources you can link?
That a very interesting, as a isaan people myself am curios why there is isaan language, today thailand have 4 language as thai language(used by people that live in the center province of thailand),isaan language(used by isaan people that live in north-east of thailand), south language(used by people that live in southern province of thailand)and north language used by people that live in northern province of thailand, while isaan language and thai language is closely relatable to each other but south language and north language is very different story but we still use the same alphabet anyway so where we come from or when we come to thailand should not matter anymore, we live in present and not the past.(our future look fucked by the way)

Buffer state? Nonsense. All you need is a few dozen kilometres of land as a buffer, not a vast country.
I’m still no wiser as to how Thailand managed to retain its independence.
As the video says, an artful combination of resistance and assimilation conducted by clear eyed Thai administrators.
Very correct. And connection with Russia is te most important tactic.

Fun Facts
2. In the Reign of King Rama IV, Siam signed the Bowring Treaty with the British. This treaty took Siam to the modern global trade and economy. The name of the Treaty was taken from Sir John Bowring, the Governor of Hong Kong who was the British representative in the signing of the Treaty.

The Thai word for westerner "farang" comes from the french word "francaise" which means french or France. Thai pronounciation causes them to pronounce it f-a-rang-set. It originally referred to the french but over time has been abbreviated to farang and refers to any westerner. It is not at all racist.

Great topic....I've always wondered how Thailand avoided being colonized by the British unlike their neighbor Burma!
Thank you for sharing your video
In my opinion, the main reason why Thailand managed to escape colonization is the Thai king's management.
