Nah, japanese weird hentai stuff were a thing even before the opening of the country. And I am not even joking, you can see some old Japanese artwork about women doing rather... questionable things with questionable things.
A good historical comparison is Japan and China in the late-1800s. Both countries were "locked", both had their doors kicked open by the Western Powers, both were forced with unequal treaties, both adopted reforms to try to "catch up"... But Japan went on to become an Asian Power equal to the West, and China ended up as "the Sick Man of the East" (and pretty much remained messed up af until the 1990s). I'm Chinese myself and this period of history always fascinates me.
The 51st Division I wonder why the Qing government thought it could somehow stave off the monumental changes in every conceivable aspect happening around the world and in europe in perticular? I have read accounts that even after seeing a live artillery demonstration the imperial court shrugged it off like the artillery was just a toy. I also think that the meiji restoration was like a proxy war between Britain and France. It is still weird why the Chinese and Japanese acted so differently.
Well, China DID attempt to reform. You can look up the Self-Strengthening Movement, China's version of the Meiji Restoration. In fact, by the First Sino Japanese War in 1894 the Imperial Chinese Navy was technologically superior to the Japanese... but still lost the war. There were LOTS of different factors involved. The more you delve into it the more complicated this shit gets.
It's tragic, really, how China became the Brits, Russians and Japanese's slave dog. But they're finally reclaiming the mantle of the giant of the East now.
I just think that when China started radical reforms in 1903 it was already too late. If they had acted earlier there wouldn't have been a revolution and probably leave the empreror in power but more Meiji like. If this happened there probably wouldn't even be the CPC in power today.

What is always overlooked about Japan becoming a modern nation in a short period of time due to the Meiji Restoration is the spread of Japan's urbanization and education in the Edo period. Even before Matthew Perry arrived, Edo, which is now Tokyo, was the largest city in the world and had the world's highest literacy rate due to the spread of private cram schools called terakoya. Each domain controlled by a feudal lord tried to promote local specialties and competed with each other, and handicraft industry developed at the highest level. Under such circumstances, modern political systems and the machinery industry were imported from the West, and Japan succeeded in modernization at once.

Nice presentation. This is my first viewing of your work. May I suggest: a presentation of the fall of the kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands and its absorption by the United States of America?
I mean, whether it was a crime or not is irrelevant. I think most people are curious about the internal politics of the kingdom and how its precarious position made it a target for literally every large power in the Pacific.
Fun fact: the kingdom of Hawaii sought help from the Japanese empire to avoid being annexed by the US. They thought an Asian empire would be more friendly than a Western power.
Another fun fact the Hawaiian Kingdom was overthrown by its own people. And secondly the reason why was the people were angry was that the last ruler of Hawaii Gueen Lili'uokalani wanted to be absorbed by Great Britain. Hence why Hawaii's flag has the union jack on it to this day.
Ryan Origin not really. The only difference is Tom crusises character was French not American. People bitched because he was white but the historical figure in question was a white guy. He just wasn't American. A small change like that to make it more accessible to English speaking audiences is fine

It's truly amazing how far the Imperial Dynasty has come. Emperor Hirohito ruled during the 2nd World War and saw his country go from ruin to a Constitution and later to an Economic Power before his death in the 80s. His son Akihito continued the trend, evolving Japan into one of three Asain Super powers that today projects itself on the world stage. Going forward with Naruhito on the Chrysanthemum Throne, who knows how far Japan can go.
Frankly speaking, my interest to know more about history of Meiji Restoration Period sparked because I read Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) manga and watched its trilogy movies.
"Creating for the first time a centualized Japan" I have to disagree, What about the Emperors of the Nara and Heian Period? They certainly tried to rule Japan as centralized autocrats based on the Tang and Silla model. And I have to add, Meiji's Japan was by no means ruled directly under the Emperor, but rather, it was ruled by an oligarchical cabinet that had the young Emperor as a figurehead on top. A voice to carry out the small cabinet's wishes.
Part of the reason for the success of the Meiji Re-something was the devastation of China by the Taiping rebellion. The rebellion wrecked the Chinese silk industry, effectively giving Japan a monopoly on silk production. This monopoly financed much of the industrial projects.
I don’t know if you’ll see this, but do you still have access to your sources for this video? I’m writing a paper on the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate and this was very useful :)
In addition to the world's highest literacy and urbanization rates, Japan's rapid modernization is believed to have been achieved because of its redundant social systems compared to other Asian countries. The redundancy is the domain system and the existence of the emperor. Because of the domain system, there was a stronger decentralization system than other Asian countries, and there were many capable samurai under each local lord. Even after the collapse of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which was the central government, they were able to lead the modernization of the Meiji period using the emperor, who had no real power but only authority.

I just realized at 4:45, there are only 48 stars. Which means Hawaii and Alaska aren't part of the Union yet at this time which is historically accurate. Nice attention to detail 👌
same i also noiticed
There are 33 at that timestamp tho... accurate for the time yes but you miscounted
It's the nature of time
That the old ways must give in
It's the nature of time
That the new ways comes in sin
When the new meets the old
It always ends the ancient ways
And as history told
The old ways go out in a blaze
Encircled by a vulture
The end of ancient culture
The dawn of destiny draws near
Imperial force defied, facing 500 samurai
Surrounded and outnumbered
60 to 1, the sword face the gun
Bushido dignified
It's the last stand of the samurai
Surrounded and outnumbered
As a new age begins
The way of the warrior comes to an end
As a new age begins
The ways of old must apprehend
It's the nature of time
That the old ways must give in
It's the nature of time
That the new ways comes in sin
An offer of surrender
Saigo ignore contender
The dawn of destiny is here
Imperial force defied, facing 500 samurai
Surrounded and outnumbered
60 to 1, the sword face the gun
Bushido dignified
It's the last stand of the samurai
Surrounded and outnumbered
Til the dawn they hold on
Only 40 are left at the end
None alive, none survive

YOUR MEN R RUNIN FROM DUH BARTERFEEERD. WAT A SHAMEFUR DISPRAY
I can understand Japans stance on immigration now, and why it's ingrained in their culture to preserve it
Indeed. they dont wanna end up like Sweden. Long Live Japan
@@broccolinyu911 Once again, people greatly exaggerating Sweden's situation.
no its not exaggerated , i recently visited sweden and got robbed by an afgani . open your eyes dude.
@@ricardolindo975 and the left would sooner deem everything as "Far right" typical
@@AR-gu2no What you say contains some grains of truth but is hightly exaggerated. First, these crimes have been known in Sweden for more than 5 years, they just became more widely known recently. Second, Erdogan is an Islamist who many Turks hate. Third, a Swedish guy in Quora said, that, he had some Muslim friends of immigrant background who lived in the worst areas and, that, they and their families didn't like the situation caused by ohter Muslim immigrants there and wanted action to end it, they even wanted it more than native Swedes because it was tarnishing the reputation of the whole Muslim immigrant community. So, not all of them are like that. I also doubt, that, it's daily.
"Ruimte en spullen" aka "space and stuff" legendary video! The small puns in between make your video's the most entertaining 'spullen' I've seen on TH-cam in a long time
IMPERIAL FORCE DEFIED!
FACING FIVE HUNDRED SAMURAI!
Brilliant editing, the visuals and sounds make these series one of the most interesting history series on TH-cam. Keep it up!
Nice presentation. This is my first viewing of your work. May I suggest: a presentation of the fall of the kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands and its absorption by the United States of America?
Radiyas 13 thats is very controversial. A lot of historians believe it was a crime for such act to be commited.
Alika Cripe EXACTLY . . . .
Hey man just wanted to say you've got a great channel here; been really enjoying your videos.
"It paved the way for anime, so clearly a grave mistake has been made."
I see you have chosen death, however, *omae wa mou shindeiru*
From ancient to future for just a flip of a hand, japan is legend
I just watched the last samurai
Mr sandman of the land fantastic movie
Mr sandman of the land I just watched History of Japan
Mr sandman of the land Shit movie, false history.
Or as I'd call it "The First Weeaboo"
Ryan Origin not really. The only difference is Tom crusises character was French not American. People bitched because he was white but the historical figure in question was a white guy. He just wasn't American. A small change like that to make it more accessible to English speaking audiences is fine
THIS IS A SHAMEFURRRR DISPRAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
that last part. Omg I was not expecting it at all. Hilarious. talking about how amazing it was that japan became a nation and open to trade with everyone else. then in a voice of of long suffering saying "but it also paved the way for anime, so clearly a grave mistake has been made." Omg that sentence reminds me so much of my parents when they are talking about my generation obsessions. lol best thing ever.
Saigo takamori's story truly shocked me. It wasn't only tragic hero, but tragic history... that's the cruel of politics
Just discovered your channel, love the artwork, the presentation, everything.
*Blasting Supercell at max volume*
"SORRY, WHAT WERE YOU SAYING ABOUT ANIME? I CAN'T QUITE HEAR YOU!"
"Anime was a mistake." (Eyes narrow) ...You what m8?
I thank you dearly for this video, for it proved to be a pivotal source for my history presentation. And also just an a great video in general as I show interest towards Japan :)
You saved me... I am cramming for an AP test XD. Thanks man! Its not the first time I used your channel for tests, but this time I would have been really screwed without this video lol. My student account for my textbook stopped working and I have no form of review except this video.
Okay. First, I loved this. Informative and fun.
Giving your patrons Hell at the end was hilarious. Thank you for that.
So when did the WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVE?
I'm sorry.
Anyway, great video as always. If I wasn't a poor little shit I'd give you a bit of money. Can't wait for the Great Northern War video. (I'm hoping it happens.) And I hope you continue making these videos till your ground harness breaks and you fall into the sun.
Ace Phoenix no hussars but, its a nature of time that always most give in...
Лев Чусовитин I swear, Sabaton is a fucking drug
They came down from the sky in the name of god long before the Samurai could make their last stand
THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED!
Ace Phoenix they didn't arrive, they were pushed back by the Ghost Division.
open the country... stop having it be closed
and see how Japan is flooded by thousands of unskilled and uneducated inmigrants (like the US)? hell no, japan is fine as it is.
C Daddy jesus, it was a reference.
+niko 2064
He's still right though, entirely didn't get the reference but his words still stand.
They can go stand in the corner, they literally have no place here. Sometimes nobody needs to hear you speak your mind. Sometimes it's utterly irrelevant to the dialogue.

SOVIET FINNISH WAR Pls
Edit: pls also included the white death
The Finns did really well until they didn't.
> The Finns did really well until they didn't.
This...
The Wild Mew Soviets could throw thousands of troops, while little Finland's troops were exhausted from the fighting
Bubbles the Finnish tactics made it where it didn't matter how many troops the soviets threw at them. They were stuck on specific roads while the fins could move back and forth across the frozen forests at will.
The finns would even massacre soviet units and multilate the corpses. They'd leave the weapons and supplies though. This was to spread tales throughout the soviet forces of a beast that lurked in the forests that couldn't be killed and that was preying on soviet troops
They mind fucked a country known for mind fucking everyone else
TheBacknblack92 I'm a Finn. Be realistic. Finland couldn't replace troops well.
I love Japan from Europe and the royal Families around the world Are fascinating to me 😍
Just remember none of this would have been possible without kenshin
Can't wait for the more faithful remake of Ruroini Kenshin to finish
Frankly speaking, my interest to know more about history of Meiji Restoration Period sparked because I read Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) manga and watched its trilogy movies.
Everybody gangsta till he says "But it also paved the way for anime, so clearly a great mistake has been made"
America: "hmmm we need more fuel for our undustrial revolution"
Rich whales: "I sense a disturbance..."
I'm sorta comfused. Is it actual whales or Wales as in the country.

Whale oil was used to power lamps before electricity came about.
Much more completed than that one video with 60 minutes in it. Thanks, mate.
Loving your videos, and the history is so interesting to watch!!! Keep up the great work!!!
lol the opening shivered me
*THE REIGN OF THE OLD SHOGUNATE, IS OVA!!!* there goes Takeda seiging Uesugi
the reign of the old shogunate IS OVER...SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON
"Creating for the first time a centualized Japan" I have to disagree, What about the Emperors of the Nara and Heian Period? They certainly tried to rule Japan as centralized autocrats based on the Tang and Silla model.
And I have to add, Meiji's Japan was by no means ruled directly under the Emperor, but rather, it was ruled by an oligarchical cabinet that had the young Emperor as a figurehead on top. A voice to carry out the small cabinet's wishes.
Thank you for the entire prelude to fall of the samurai. Feels like a tribute :>
As soon as i head "like the french" i know the bakufu has lost .
Let the Shogun 2 memes rain upon the shamefur disprayers .
came for the Bill Wurtz comments
stayed for the detailed explanation of the meiji restoration
Part of the reason for the success of the Meiji Re-something was the devastation of China by the Taiping rebellion. The rebellion wrecked the Chinese silk industry, effectively giving Japan a monopoly on silk production. This monopoly financed much of the industrial projects.
"Nanban" means friend in Tamil 😂
That's true.
Yea i was thinking about that film
it's a chinese loanword, means barbarian from the south ,in chinese pronounce NanMan南蛮,while Japanese pronounce nanban
@Curin Tamilians are South Indians...........lol
Yean friend pole yaaru macha 😂
I love that opening sequence. Bravo!
Where is the Great Northern War video?
I just realized that one of the GOAT anime Samurai X and one of the best movies of all time The Last Samurai were set in the same period.
Great video sir, definitely going to share this vid and recommend this channel.
keep up the good work man! I've been subbed since around 1,000, and I can't think of someone who deserved to blow up like you did.

Iemochi became the Shogun in August 1858
The Perry expedition happened in 1853 and 1854, before Iemochi became a shogun. So Iemochi wasn't the one who signed the treaties. Hell, he was like 6 years old when Perry showed up
Total war Shogun2?
please do battle of tsushima.
It's fun learning from your videos. Love it
LOL I love the total war music
