    If you're going to change (Modify) the Restrictor Plate from the 9.9-HP to either the 15 or 20-HP, you NEED to change the ECM Module as well...That's why you were getting the problems you mentioned! Spend the money for the extra part (ECM Module), and you won't have that problem!

      Depending on where you buy the motor, and where you would buy the parts, I bet it would be better to just buy the 15 or 20 over the 9.9 since there's only a $100 difference between the 9.9 and 15 and ~ $400 difference between the 9.9 and 20. Weight difference is less than 25lbs too. suzukioutboardteam.com/product-category/9_9-hp-motors/

    Thanks for the video. I just got a 2022 Suzuki 9.9 and I may do the 20 upgrade. We have a lot of 10 hp restricted lakes and he said 9 out of 10 of the Suzuki 9.9 he sells with the “high performance upgrade” hahaha. He replaces the restrictor plate and ECU. He said the mother does (overall) run better because it was originally designed as a 20.
    In my case I didn’t opt for the upgrade but may do it later. It’s going to live it’s life as a kicker and at not much more then half throttle, at most anyway. I’m debating if the $700 upgrade will even be worth the money and effort.
    I would be a little cautious with opening up the restrictor plate. The ECU is programmed for that volume of air and the computer is telling the injectors to deliver the metered amount of fuel based on that restricted amount of air. It may lean the motor out more then safe. That’s probably why you where getting surging, that’s a sign of a very lean condition.
    Good luck I’m excited to get mine out on the water!

      You'd probably be happy with just opening that middle hole on the restrictor plate slightly larger.
      It definitely makes a difference. I've done it too large before and it did surge, Bought a new 9.9 plate and went less large in drilling it out and it worked great. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide to do.

      Why not buy a 15 hp restrictor plate instead of drilling out a 9.9.

    Thank you for this video. I've got a 10' RHIB that's rated to max 15hp. Have a 9.9 4 stroke carb'd Merc that runs well. I'm aiming to get a 20hp next year as they are the same weight/size as the 15hp motors and I want to tow a tube on the lake with a couple small kids or another adult in the boat. Would be getting somewhat close to the maximum occupancy weight, but never over. I'm concerned that it's going to be too much power for when I'm not loaded up? Could I just swap a different prop for the lighter trips? I'm mostly concerned about having the power when I need it - I don't tend to go fast as a rule.

    • @BrianMDIY
      @BrianMDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm pretty sure props are not where you would get your speed. Probably you'll need to change the carburetor. There is a torque difference when you change from three blade to four blade prop. Maybe look into those topics? Best of luck to you.

    My understanding is the ECU gets a headache and goes into limp mode if you exceed the rev limit, which is why its necessary to swap out for a higher rated (15 0r 20 horse ECU). My question is, If you replaced the 9.9 restrictor plate with the 15 horse restrictor plate, wouldn't installing a higher pitch prop say a 10 or 11 pitch, bring down the rpms to a limit the 9.9 ECU could handle?

    • @BrianMDIY
      @BrianMDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've done this opening of the restrictor plate twice. Once on a 2019 short shaft and once on a 2020 long shaft 9.9 and I can tell you the engine does not go into a limp mode. The second time I opened it up a little too much and experienced slight over revving. So I had to buy a new plate. If I recall there was no availability to purchase a 15 plate at the time, so I purchased another 9.9 plate and drilled a little, but not so large. This method definitely opens it up noticeably. Regarding prop pitch and ECU I didn't play around with those. I think it would get expensive trying different props out. If I had to do it all over again I'd just buy the size I wanted and let the factory engineers figure out the math behind the performance. Thanks for the reply and if you do something to your outboard please stop in and share your experience/results.

      @@BrianMDIY Thank you for the response. I purchased the 9.9 for two reasons.1. The lake I plan to spend the most time on has a "no wake" restriction. There are plenty of boats with large motors on the lake, but they all have to run in idle. I didn''t see a need for a larger horse power motor. 2. Several other nearby lakes have a 10 horse or under restriction. My boat does alright with the 9.9 on the river. However I'd like a bit more power when I take friends out (added weight). My motor is a new 2021 model. Owners manual sates: Over-revolution Caution System: This system is activated when engine speed exceeds the maximum recommended speed for more than 10 seconds. If this system activates, engine speed will automatically be reduced to approximately 3000 r/min. So my thought was a larger prop would reduce the rpm, hopefully keeping it in a safe range. However, I don't know much about outboard motors and don't know if fule mixture or other things may be effected. Your modification may be enough to give the boost I'm looking for.

    • @BrianMDIY

      My opinion is that opens up too much air flow without changing the ECU. This is risky enough as it is. Run it too lean and it will over rev and possibly damage the engine.
