    There is no need for a new ECU, I did this same conversion and by the advice of a Suzuki tech he said the stock ECU would adjust to the added airflow and it did, runs great.
    Only parts you need are the flame arrestor on seal

    The reason this works for Suzuki is because the 9.9 and the 20 are the same motor with different intake controls. They both weigh 108 pounds in the long shaft version. But other manufacturers have different approaches. Example Tohatsu offers a 9.9 that weighs the same as their 20. They also offer a 9.8 that is significantly lighter. The 9.8 weighs 80 pounds. If you are frequently using a portable on a dinghy from a larger vessel, the difference in lifting 80 pounds or 108 pounds is significant. It magnifies when mounting to a dinghy in a rolling anchorage. I only post this to highlight the differences between the 2 brands. I have a Tohatsu 4hp on a small boat and a Yammy 175 on a slightly bigger boat. I don't own a Suzy.

    Interesting to see if it uses less fuel at the same speed without that restrictor. In a similar thing where the manufacture limited the power output for the same engine, I had a Cub Cadet with a Kawasaki engine that went from 22hp to 25hp by just allowing the throttle butterfly to open fully.

      GM used to limit the throttle valve opening angle on some cars when they had corporate edicts on the amount of power for that size car. One of the first buff-book recommendations was to have someone fully depress the accelerator pedal while you stared down through the top of the carb - of course with the engine off and air cleaner lid removed. If you saw the throttle plate wasn't going vertical, you could look for what was stopping it short and remove that restriction.

    One could get most of the performance for free by just removing the restrictor. From what I've read the only difference between the ECUs is that the 20HP one allows an extra 500RPM before the rev limiter stops it so you'll get all of the acceleration of a 20 and just not have the same top speed potential. Putting the right prop on it will probably be worth more than the ECU swap without a re-prop.

    What is the cost difference between a 10 and 20hp motor off the shelf?

    • @Dark30Outdoors
      @Dark30Outdoors  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Back then it was maybe $480 so u didn’t save a ton of money, but that’s not why I did it.

    Is it just this motor that can be upgraded?

      I think I saw a comment that mentioned another 2 motors that have different hp rating, but they are essentially the same motor with these parts that are different, but I can't remember which ones.

    do you get any performace gains with just the flame arrestor? or do you need the ecu?

    • @Dark30Outdoors
      @Dark30Outdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am not sure, I think you do get some. Though, the fuel injectors under the 9.9 ECU are going to push through less fuel than the 20 ECU.

      I think the ecu raises the rpm limiter…

      Most fuel injectors vary flow by pulse width modulation so injectors may not need to be changed.@Dark30Outdoors

      If the motor breaks, just put everything back in, you can wear gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints. The engine hours are stored in the ebu memory.
