  • Showing the steps on how I converted my Suzuki 9.9 outboard to a 20hp.
    This conversion worked for me but at my own expense and may void warranty or could damage to the engine if not properly completed.
    Please do due diligence and double check with a certified installer before trying.

    Hello, I'm Eric from Chile, first, thank you for sharing your experience, second, ask if you notice, in addition to speed, an increase in strength, that is, adding more weight to the boat and achieving better thrust, I say this to raise the family and have better overall boat performance, not just speed. Greetings and thanks

      I did find not only in speed but I was able to get a different prop that would have more thrust for sure. It’s not crazy but definitely an improvement

    Mitsubishi licensed their ECU to Suzuki/tohatsu/Yamaha they all use the same unit with minor difference. Pretty cool, you can do this in tohatsu/mercs but Yamaha still in 1990 with their 9.9/15 motors sadly. Even their 20hp is 30lbs heavier than the efi zuk and tohatsu. Honda are unique, but their service centers few and parts costs more some reason.

    Great stuff Mike … although the info isn’t directly relevant to me now, there was a period of time when I was looking at new ‘used’ boats I came across the same “opportunity” that existed between early 2000 models of Yamaha F70’s and 90’s by change out of the same components. Great info for Suzi users! And nice job in how you documented this 👍👍

    Greetings from Toronto...Great video!! I am confused about which 20hp ECM to install. You mentioned 33930-89L30. In another video the guy switched his 2021 model to 33930-89L20, and when I contacted Crowley Marine and gave them my VIN (slightly different than actual in case it's reported to Suzuki) they suggested 33930-89L40. So I'm stalled at doing this upgrade until I can resolve it. Don't know if I'd be allowed to return for refund if I chose incorrectly. I have a 2021 DF9.9BTL with elect start. Thanks for any suggestions on this!

      It’s running great. Had the dealer service it at the beginning of the year and they said it looks good. Yes I ended up going with the 10 pitch. That brings me to a top RPM of 6230 at full throttle. Optimal is between 5300-6300

    Great video Mike. Geez, i can't resist this upgrade. I have a 30 foot trimaran and love my 9.9 hp. Being able to tap into twice the power during a "holy cow" moment is worth 500 bucks anytime and anywhere. One question, Have you had anytime to evaluate fuel consumption at 20 hp versus 9.9hp? I'm not talking WOT stuff...but everyday, seat-of-the-pants, experience between the two setups.

    • @ReelLifeWithMike
      @ReelLifeWithMike  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Alan. It Definetly uses more fuel but haven’t done a full comparison. After the amount of questions and responses I have had I will be making a secondary video to this one but I’m more detail including prop pitches, speed tests and fuel consumption. As you can see there was still snow so I did the minimum but now it’s summer I’ll Definitely redo the video as a part two. Stay tuned.

Orca are all Yamaha parts do you think this is possibly the same so could convert? I am not going to blame you for any advice you say because the decision is totally mine not yours. My boat is only getting up to 14 knots and my brother in law now wants to come with me and a lot of my journeys but he is more than twice my size and weight and to me if the weather changes we have no chance of getting back lol. I recently updated to a larger boat and ended up selling it just after a year. I had it tested and checked over and there has been no issues whatsoever. I’m definitely not a boat mechanic, but have a lot of knowledge in that area. I believe anything with a mass airflow sensor should be OK as a computer would adjust the gas to a ratio if it was electronic fuel, injected.

    I don,t know if u mentioned it but how much faster did it go, is it really worth the trouble , does it really move like a 20hp. And whats the cost $500 US.

    • @ReelLifeWithMike
      @ReelLifeWithMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100 percent goes like a 20hp now. So the whole point of doing this is having a 9.9 to go on restricted lakes but able to bump it up to a 20 on larger lakes. The pricing in Canadian dollars between the 9.9 and 20 hp it’s about $1300 Canadian. So you only save A little bit by doing it yourself but you have the option to go back to a 9.9 in a restricted lake. In my boat I would go about 13 to 15 km an hour with a 9.9 and about 40 to 43 km an hour with a 20

      As far as I know unless they changed it but I doubt it. The easiest thing is to check a website called Browns point Marine. All you have to do is find your model number and then look at the ECU of the motor you have and the ECU of the outboard you’re looking at and see if if the part numbers are the same if that makes sense.

Outboard manufacturers and people have been doing this for years. No different then chipping a car/truck or changing the throttle body and cams on my big block so cool down buddy.
