Land Rover Defender TD5 Roamerdrive install Part 2

  • I've owned a Land Rover Defender TD5 for around 5 years now and have had a return of around 29-30 MPG fairly constantly which is better than most. I bought a secondhand Discovery transfer box that has a ratio of 1.22 compared to the 1.44 I have at the moment. The idea of the Discovery box was lower revs for the same speed but the whole of the gear chain would be altered not just 5th gear which would effect the acceleration and pulling power I have at the moment.
    With fuel prices getting ever higher I bit the bullet and shelled out for a Roamerdrive unit. Basically this is a real overdrive unit that adds an extra gear to the 5 I already have. So when cruising on the motorway I'd drop into the new 6th gear and this reduces the overall RPM by 28% with a suggested 15% fuel saving! It can also be used in the lower gears again with the RPM reduced by 28%. You just don't want to try and pull away with it engaged.
    The Roamerdrive fits on the back of the original transfer box when you remove the PTO cover.
    Watch the video's unfold as I explain my take on the Discovery box and the Roamerdrive and the fitting and road tests both before and after the Roamerdrive gets installed.
    In this video you'll see me install the Roamerdrive and get the Defender ready for a road trip.

    Joint gasket, Roamerdrive to Tx box: FRC5413
    *** Roamerdrive suggest swapping the original bearing over and not fit a replacement as there is no guarantee the new bearing will match the mating part left in the transfer box. If you replace both parts then that's fine but as part of the bearing (the running surface) is left in the transfer box and is difficult to remove there is a temptation to leave this in place and just replace the "bearing" part on the shaft. I mention this at about 5mins into the video.
    Keep a lookout for further videos in this series.

    Mike I've watched this video many times and just recently took the leap and purchased a Roamerdrive. Had to buy direct from Canada as they're having a dispute with their importer Britpart at the moment. I just finished the install this morning and I can honestly say I couldn't have done it without this video. A huge thanks for putting it together and covering all the details such the issue with the cables. Genuis.
    Mine's passed the initial test and operates well. Not got it up to proper speed yet but will do over the next few days. Thanks again.

      Hi Stuart, thanks for the much appreciated feedback, it is very welcome. My Roamer drive is still going well and is almost time for its first oil change. As I'm driving faster the MPG is about the same as before (well a mile or two better) but I'm loving it. I can almost hold a conversation at 70 MPH without shouting! Thanks again and of course thanks for watching.

    Interesting video.
    I have a Series 2A that has been fitted with a Fairey overdrive .
    At highway speed, it is deafening.
    I believe a rebuild is in its future.
    Not the same as yours, but similar.
    Thanks for posting.👍

    Good video, interesting content, I'm considering a Romerdrive to replace my GKN.
    I think I would have put a new bearing on the overdrive... I know you said its not good to "mix & match" but I reckon that would be better than using a bearing that's been attacked with a chisel

    • @MikeMakesIt
      @MikeMakesIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rust and oil. If the bearing had been damaged then I would have replaced it, I had one on stand by! Although I think I would have had to change both parts and the transfer box side would have been a pain. I followed the instructions from the designer with regards the chisel attack and in my case the bearing was removed without damage. Perhaps I was lucky. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

      Hi Rust and oil, I fitted the Roamerdrive few days ago now. I was of the same mind about the bearing, I brought it to a local workshop who used proper bearing puller and press, had it changed over in about 4-5 minutes, no fuss👌

    Thanks for the video, I've been tempted by one of these for a while now. How did it work out? I've not seen a part 3 posted yet....

      Hi Nick, thanks for the comments. Well, so far so good, the MPG are up, the whine I was getting is reducing and I can drive a lot quicker without the feeling I'm going to die! The side effect of course in driving quicker is the MPG goes down a little, but still better than it was! There are 4 videos so far in this "series" but I now have enough data to make another one with the results from about 10 tank refills. That should be on line in a week or two so keep a look out for that. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

    Mike quick question, you mention topping it off with oil after your 10 minute run, did you run oil into the roamerdrive (upper uniut) until it dribbled out of the hole or what amount did you add to constitute topping off?

    • @MikeMakesIt
      @MikeMakesIt  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, I was talking about checking the normal transfer box level after 20 mins. This is what Roamer drive suggest in their documentation. When it comes to an oil change apparently there are 2 ways to do it. Drain the transfer box normally and refill with new. This way there will be about 3/4 pint of old oil left in the Roamer drive. Or the other way is to drain the box in the normal way AND the Roamer drive using its independent drain plug then refill the drive AND the transfer box. The latter is a bit of a pain so I’ll be just draining the box and letting the small amount of old oil mix with the new. Roamer drive suggested both ways. Apparently and I suppose obviously, the Roamer drive gets feed from the main transfer box when running.

    Hi Mike, I’ve been waiting for a video like this, I bought the roamerdrive last winter and have been putting off fitting it, I’ve fitted the Fairey OD on my series 3 but was getting cold feet re the defender, lol. After watching your vid this has now give me the kick I need to get mine fitted, also need to test it before warranty runs out!!. Mine’s the 300TDi, but I’m sure it’s the same process. I wonder would it make a big difference if I put a new Timken bearing on the gear, i understand it’s better to keep the original as it’s mated to the race, but could I wreck things?. Also, did you have problems with the handbrake cable being in the way? Anyway, thanks again, and subbed👍 Ps, not to make you envious, but mine came in a plywood box😁

    • @MikeMakesIt
      @MikeMakesIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rory O'. I asked the same question about the Timken's bearing to the designer Ray Woods and he said both parts should be changed as the bearing may have may have been replaced at some point with a non-Timken's so the part left in the Transfer box may not have the same profile as the new bearing you want to fit to the Roamerdrive. I did have to relocate the handbrake cable and the wiring loom a tad. I removed and reformed a metal standoff bracket. I believe this is in the videos but if you cannot find it I'll take a look and tell you exactly where it is. And yes I wanted a wooden box!! Thanks for watching and good luck with your install 👍🏽

      @@MikeMakesIt , cheers for that Mike, yeah, I seen you relocated the loom, when I first looked at my handbrake cable I was thinking it was going to be a problem, will update when fitted👍

      Hi Mike, finally fitted the overdrive yesterday, boy at our workshop had a selection of bearing pullers, was about 4 minutes taking it off the old gear and putting it on the new one, pays to have all the proper gear/friends, lol. Brought it home and tackled the swap, had it complete in approx 2.5 hours, wasted half an hour trying to put the tunnel shroud on the wrong way round!!😫🤣. With the 300TDi I didn’t have to relocate anything for the linkage. Have done about 50miles on it, it fair drops the revs when you’re doing 60 in 5th. Also, very little noise when engaged. Again, massive thanks for doing the videos, it still would’ve been lying under the spare bed if you hadn’t done such clear step by step instructions, Roamerdrive should pay you for this👌👍, ps, if you ever visit N.Ireland, drop a comment and I’ll meet up and get you a pint🍺. Ps there was no hole on the gear on my original gear, so glad to get it changed over.👍☘️

    I purchase a Roamer Drive and do not want to take the bearing from the existing Transfer Gear Shaft, do you know the Timken reference or code number for a replacement bearing? Thank you.

    • @MikeMakesIt
      @MikeMakesIt  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, check out the notes for Part 2 of this video and the actual video 5mins in. Roamerdrive suggest you swap the original bearing over as there is on guarantee the part of the bearing left in the transfer box will match a new bearing. If you swap both parts of the bearing then there is no issue. Part number here: www.paddockspares.com/frc5564g-transfer-box-bearing-oem.html
      But please double check the part number is correct before you order!
