Great video. One thing i would add, specifically on the Tdi's, is to test drive the vehicle and get it up to operating temperature. Then pull the dipstick up and see if you can see 'steam'. Consistent and clearly visible steam means the motor is tired and you will probably need to throw some money at it - something i wish i knew before i bought a 1998 Tdi!
Always wanted a Land Rover, they've been in my blood since my grandad, he had 3 110s,one as spares, aswell as a Red 1969 MG Midget and a Triumph Bike from the 60s
If you're looking for virtually rust-free right hand drive vehicles, Johannesburg is a treasure trove. Something to check for in hot climates that won't be a problem in England is that the rubber seals on the windshield supports perish resulting in leaks through the bolts and down the bulk head. A dead giveaway is the door seals having melted onto the frame slightly. This was the case with the Defender I bought. It was otherwise in fantastic condition. Luckily the vehicle had clearly been kept inside.
Great guide! Reminds me of my 90 TD5 buying process with 270t km on the clock. Avoid too shiny, too modified vehicles - that is usually a good hint. Thanks!
Make Shure transfer box drops in and out of high and low gear OK. Ditto for the diff lock. Listen to the transmission. Essential things to do on the test drive.
Great advice, all very good points to consider. I would add if possible check to see if the engine is warm, I always prefer to do a full cold start. I would also do a full check of the low/high range and see if the centre difflock works as supposed to.
Love that you have a tdi, hopefully you will be doing some mods. I have a 200tdi, but located in Guernsey, so cant book it in for mods you do, but at least I can watch your awesome videos to get inspiration and learn as I go. 😁
I've owned and driven landrovers of all shapes and sizes for nearly 30 years and always appreciate good buyers guides like this. Noticed you have a set of Davanti Terratuora's on the 110 how do you find them? i saw them at LRO in September and quite liked the look for what i use my defender for. Maybe you could do a tye review for a range of tyres from the extreme ones on your builds to the standard tyres. Like the advice of avoiding rusty ones unless you buy cheap, that exactly what i did with mine (paid very little for it) and 5 years and 120000 miles later its still going strong, getting weary of welding though, time for a new chassis!
I’ve had my puma 110 from new no accidents but from new the panel gaps are shocking and it’s starting to rust,I’ve had every model and my last one is the worst by far! The rear crossmember wasn’t even painted properly! Just a thin black mist and now a lovely rust red! Good old JLR
Hello. Greetings from Paris ! I own a defender 90 Td5 as a second car. Never been able to high rev it and up shift quickly like a Golf or a sport car. The gearbox doesn’t like it and blocks or grind the agressive up shift. Especially 1 to 2d, 2 to 3d. If I up shift slowly on low revs, everything is smooth. How in the video the up shift is so quick on high rpm ? Many thx for your feedbacks. Merci ! Julien
I didn't hear you cover the suspension, would you be concerned by this advisory: "Suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive chassis"?
Hi @Juice Motors ! Thanks for the vids. I always wonder whether or not doing a left hand steering swap is feasible. A vid for left hand drive countries on the subject would probably get los of views. Thanks again!
I wonder how much he paid for that particular Defender? Having gone through the condition in great detail, I'm curious what price range to expect for that level of quality???
Only if you’ve got a very big head or are circumferaly challenged, or you’ve undone all the wheel nuts. 😵💫 Do always chock the wheels on a Land Rover (I hated it when they started calling them Defenders) when using a jack though. They roll.
Great video! Very useful Can I ask, which defender model and engine do you consider to be the best base to start building a dreamcar? 90? 110? Td5? Tdi?...
I just bought a TD5 and asked myself the same question beforehand - 90 or 110 is entirely up to personal preference (you want a small car, get a 90 - want a larger one, get a 110, want a long pickup, get a 130). As for the engine - from what I have found it doesnt really matter too much as long as the rest of the car is good. The TD5 starting from modell year 2003 can be electronically tuned (interesting for EURO4 certificate in germany). It is also noteworthy that the TD5 also has a chain instead of a cambelt. But in general - both the TD5 and the 300TDI engines can run really really long and reliably if taken care off properly. For me personally the TD4 was not an option as the prices for TD4 Defenders were quite a bit higher and a tad out of my Budget. I ended up getting a 2004 TD5 110 for 20 grand (Euros) which was initially completely mike-sandered (wax in chassis and other empty spaces) and only had 200k km on it. Only rustspots were the bumper (easy fix for around 120 euros) and the rear doors (little bit more effort but if you know how to weld fixable, especially since the aluminum didnt start corroding yet). Kind of a lucky grab though as the sellers fucked up their description and made it seem super dodgy, when we visited them though it turned out they were simply a little lost with the internet but otherwise insanely honest people lol.
@@Averell64 thx for the reply. My favourote one would be a 110 hardtop td5 I think. Maybe you can make it your next project lol.. Love watching the videos Belgian fan
I think any potential defender buyer needs to budget for a replacement galvanised chassis if they vehicle hasn’t already had it done. To prolong the life of the vehicle it will need done at some stage.
The basic Idea of this video is great … Having said that, did you sir not forget a very important issue ..? The front air vents ! Water and air is passing through … and if the seal is not properly maintained, the whole front is starting to rot !?🤔 Or am I missing something..? Greetings from Germany …👋 … PS. Since I’m not a mechanic I had my guys go over it and it is a sweet ride. Having said that, most people are effected by the looks of a defender and don’t realize they actually buy technology from the sixties. And very soon are pretty disappointed… I’m however spend a extra five grant to get the car up to standard and quite satisfied 🖖
I'm toying with the idea of possibly importing a military surplus armored Snatch as a potential "bug out" vehicle. The ones I have seen listed are '94s, that have been professionally rebuilt and up-graded for the military, but have very low mileage. RHD is road-legal in the US. I would have to somehow have to pay someone such as yourself, for a thorough professional inspection and evaluation of any such vehicle. If you are familiar with these, do you believe them to be worth buying? I'm essentially prepping for the coming crises, and want a street-legal vehicle that would offer some protection if the worst happens.
Best tip: buy a Toyota LandCruiser 70 series. At the end of all days at the 4x4 holiday: LR owners are bringing out their tools to do emergency repairs... Toyota owners are bringing out the BBQ and enjoy the scenery and a good long night rest.

Thanks Juice. Just bought my first Defender 90 and your guide was crucial to ensuring I got a good one.
Chassis VIN is another major concern, unless it’s on a galvanised chassis it should be visible and must match the paperwork
After 6 different Defender models from LR 110V8 to tdi to td5 and td4, long, short or tarpaulin with bows, I can only agree with you.
Which is most reliable engine?

I’m looking at one 2000 now, 247k on the clock, will the motor last how many more miles if decently maintained in your experience ?

How about mentioning the windscreen gasket and potential corrosion of the windscreen frame.
