    So basically just wait for zen?

    • @6utS
      @6utS 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Zen will be weaker from intel for games, especially at similar price points like i5 6600k/7600k(so 250$), what we can count on is maybe intel reduce prices a little bit to stay more compettive vs cheap zen products.

      It's literally been seen to be pretty much as powerful as the 6900K in games at CES, at least the 8 core/16 thread CPU. Being the next Faildozer is factually wrong at this point.

      AMD released the settings they used in the blender benchmark and 6900k users were able to beat that zen score by 12 seconds.
      FURTHERMORE, that Zen chip in Doon/vulkan was dropping at 37fps in their tests.

    Upgrading your CPU at this moment doesn't seem too reasonable unless it's weaker then a i5-2500k. I'd say wait for future processors at this time. (Unless you really want that i7-6700k and up)

      Would changing from a AMD FX 8350 to this CPU be better or worse cause i really want to move away from AMD CPUs and switch over to intel so it works better with my 980ti

      i5 2500k will bottleneck u on any new open world game if u play in 1080p, yes even if u oc it and even if u pair it with fastest 2133 DDR3 memory it can handle.
      Examples- fh3,mafia3,wd2,dishonored2, de:md amd even gta5
      Ofc u can keep old i5 if u dont care about stable 60fps in those and dont mind dips in cpu intense scenario, but if u do, get an i7, even old i7 2600k will do fine(same mobo/ram as ur i5 so u can upgrade to much better performance for around half the price- used i7 2600k).

      Better, but your CPU is a bulldozer CPU, while the CPUs that AMD is going to release next month are going to be ZEN CPUs, their new architecture. In recent tests from both AMD and CanardPC (a french specialized paper magazine that had an engineering sample) the new AMD CPUs were on par or beated Intel's best offerings.
      Moreover AMD ZEN shoud have as a baseline a i7 6700K equivalent, and it will go up from that with a 6850K and 6900K equivalents.
      So wait, it's not going to be a similar CPU to what you have now. It's actually possible that the new AMD CPUs will work better with your GPU, who knows.
      At the very least, if AMD CPUs are better, Intel's CPUs will have to go down in price you'll be able to save quite some money anyway ;)

      Whiting1289 Watch Digital Foundry do their own tests with i7s from Sandy Bridge to Skylake (It is not 50 fps gain) . I would guesstimate an IPC gain of 20-30%. I still have my i7 2600k from 5 years. And to spend around £400 on a new i7 7700k build to get the same 4C/8T "feels" kind of pointless

    • @AdiiS
      @AdiiS 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I have an i7 2600k at 4.5 ghz my GPU GTX 1080 is the bottleneck in every single game at 1440p let alone 4k, so basically I would not gain a shit by replacing the cpu. Most of you people don't even know shit, like you saying you will gain 50fps, it's fucking ridiculous.

    • @LionRafale
      @LionRafale 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adii S Sounds about right. Cause higher resolutions is makes the system GPU bound. So a CPU change is even more pointless if you are running a 1440p or higher monitor

      @CaptainKenway 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Bullshit. There hasn't been any extensive testing of that theory beyond cherrypicked Intel review samples. The 7600K will average out the same as the 6600K in the long run, just as the 4790K and its "improved process" and "high quality TIM" did with the 4770K. It's pure marketing bluster aimed at selling as many of these respins to as many idiots as possible.

      It's not gonna bury shit. Just cause some more healthy competition. Intel has been gouging prices for years unopposed. Still selling quad-cores as mainstream processors after 9 years is a fucking joke. Running up the cost by including an IGP GPU on the die that nobody uses is a fucking joke. Not allowing overclocking on all of their desktop chips is a fucking joke. Seriously, fuck Intel.

    I've been trying to find a worthwhile upgrade. I run an i7-2700k yet it seems like even the i7-7700k isnt worth the cost of upgrading and rebuilding my pc. it seems like its a meager 30% improvement over a stock i7-2700k and after 5 years you'd expect better. I'd love to see a video showing top of the range for each generation over the last 5 or so years tracking how cpu's have been progressing.

  • @ThatGuyKappa
    @ThatGuyKappa 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love the work DF no fluff or cheap trending hooks in the title, just the straight none diverging facts love it, in my personal opinion the 7700k isn't worth the upgrade if you own a Skylake, kabylake has bad thermal interface, gets hot fast at an incredible rate, even if you decide to delid it for better thermal paste, temps do improve dramatically, but the main tangible selling market point here is the 4k Netflix streaming support which is nullified as soon as you stick in a dedicated video card, it disables the integrated gpu, so in a nutshell Intel says they have improved on the 14nm fin fet process thus improving efficiency but clock for clock same IPC, yet it runs hotter than Skylake and it's added feature is rendered useless for it's target enthusiast consumer who will put in a dedicated video card, you don't buy a 350 dollar CPU just for Netflix 4k streaming, you get a cheap setup box aka TV box, and what about overclocking? there was soo much hype about it made it sound like 98% of 7700k CPUs were able to hit 5ghz reliably, but with my own experiences and further research the real case will be roughly around less than 30 percent of 7700k will hit 5ghz with no offsets and at reasonable temps nothing over 85c, only reason to buy kaby lake is if your upgrading from a AMD 965be like I did, so if your coming from a really slow or older CPU then yes it's worth it but not from Skylake

      A lot of people don't know or understand this, but Nvidia usually has the upperhand when it comes to performance in games on the AMD counterpart. But AMD's drivers have been known to mature in time. A RX480 did a lesser job then the GTX1070 on release. Now, the tables have turned. In 1 year time, AMD's cards have gotten close to a 10% boost. In some games specifically it's even better. Whereas Nvidia's cards have not. Something to take into consideration when purchasing a card, even if you're spending it on an older card. Search for the most recent benchmarks, it makes a huge difference.

    Can you please do these tests with mid-range GPUs too, would be interesting to see how the older CPUs fair with those.

  • @SvDKILLSWITCH
    @SvDKILLSWITCH 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    What would be interesting would be to see the i5-2500K vs the i5-7600K with RAM speeds on both systems at 2133 MHz and using something like a GTX 1060. I feel you can't definitively say that "clock for clock Kaby Lake is 35% faster than Sandy Bridge" when memory bandwidth is also different between the two systems (and for this kind of scenario is does make sense to use the Titan XP instead).
    Basically with the 1060 it becomes a pure "real world" gaming benchmark where the primary bottleneck is on the GPU, and system memory bandwidth between the two machines is as close as possible. That way, it all comes down to whether or not the CPU can keep up with the GPU, and improvements to overall memory bandwidth due to faster DDR4 RAM aren't a consideration. You can then repeat the test with the Titan XP for a definitive conclusion on overall raw gaming performance improvements between Sandy Bridge and Kaby Lake.
    I guess it's fairly obvious to me that an i5-7600K is going to outperform an i5-2500K when you pair it with much faster RAM and a Titan X Pascal, and yes nobody in their right mind should be pairing a Skylake or Kaby Lake K-series processor with 2133 MHz RAM, but I think that the differential in this scenario would be a lot less than the 35% you suggest in this comparison.
    On another note, I'm looking forward to your coverage of AMD's Ryzen processors and Vega GPUs.

    dont forget that he is using a titan xp, which is causing a cpu bottleneck. any amount of extra power from memory bandwith to cpu clock rates will obviously grant better performance. if you were to be using a gpu that did not show a cpu bottleneck, any extra amount of mhz on ram wouldnt make a difference

    Just a quick question.
    What's the point in getting a high end cpu? Wouldn't it be better to get a mid-range one and allocate the rest of the budget on a more powerful gpu?

    • @martinshekreli7227
      @martinshekreli7227 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      goodlyboony because its very easy to upgrade a GPU, but its not easy to upgrade Cpu coz u may have to change the entire system. High end CPU is for eliminating CPU bottleneck. For example, people bought 2600k 5-6 years ago and can pair with the gtx titan XP without much bottleneck, but if he bough the i3 2300 or AMD fx6100 at that time, he cant maximize the titan XP power.

    I just purchased an ASUS ROG MAXIMUS IX HERO MB with Intel Core i5 7600K and 16 GB Corsair DDR4 2400 ram. This is the FIRST time I have ever purchased an Intel based system to build. I have been loyal to AMD for many years. Since I am retired, I cannot afford a new GPU also, so I am forced to stay with my Nvidea GEFORCE GTX 960 with 4 GB ram. I certainly hope this is going to last a while. Building new rigs and being on a fixed income are not compatible!

    In fairness, Intel make great CPUs. The 7600 and 7700ks though were just released as an experimental sale. They know people will buy their slight upgrades so why not release them to the market? There won't be a significant Intel CPU upgrade for a couple years. Not sure what some customers expect tbh. Technology can only move so fast. At this very moment, id say it's fair to claim that AMD perform far better in the GPU market than with their CPU's, but the game changes completely if zen can be a cost-effective beast in its own right

    Can you compare an Z270 + i5 7600k (OCed to 4.8~) + 3000 Mhz Memory + a 40-50€ CPU cooler (typical OC Setup), vs. an B250 + i7 7600 + 2400 Mhz memory (+ Intel Stock cooler, or maybe an entry level one).
    Both Setups should cost nearly the same~, but the Difference is, higher Clock speed + higher Ram speed vs. Hyperthreading.
    In your i5 2500k vs. i7 3770k Video you showed, that Hyperthreading was more future proof over the Years, compared to OC.
    But what about NOW? Would an non-OC i7 7600 still beat an non-Hyperthreaded i5 7600k, despite lower Clock speed?
    Of course, i would idealy pair those 2 setups with a GTX 1060 / RX 480 (1080p / 60 Hz gaming, while still futureproofing the Platform), and maybe with a GTX 1080 (which is the typical higher end GPU today), just to see with which GPU Hyperthreading actually can make a difference in today's Games.

    This is the only place where I have seen evidence/something to suggest that faster RAM speeds can make a meaningful difference. Since I am planning to buy a i5 7600k and a gtx 1060 (which is what you tested with) with a z270 motherboard and 16GB of DDR4 RAM I am asking what speed of RAM should I get (for gaming) and since my gf is planning to use some game development programs does that mean that faster (faster than 2133) RAM is needed? Also what should I get 2 x 8GB or 4 x 4 GB? An answer would be much appreciated.

      i use i5 4670k at 3.8ghz turbo speed paired with gtx 1070 strix edition, in games: Dirt rally, far cry primal,doom, mad max limit is the gpu but in bf1 its cpu bottleneck. In rise of the tomb raider, in the open areas cpu works at 100% load and gpu around 80%, exploring tombs it goes other way around 70%cpu and 100%gpu usage. So yes this cpu is slight bottleneck but almost non existent

    Will you guys check out the Kaby Lake pentiums with hyperthreading? Might make them a new option for a budget build starting at 70 euro's. However, with i3's being more expensive, what would the added value be besides compatibility for the Oculus Rift (which you wouldnt want to do on an i3 in the first place)

    Last year everyone was saying Polaris would DESTROY Nvidia and that AMD would be the new budget king. Wasn't that impressive at all and so far most people have gone with Nvidia. I think everyone should not get too hyped about Zen. AMD has much less resources than Intel, I'm hoping it is a game changer but looking back it seems unlikely.

    • @sandbox242
      @sandbox242 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      only reason why that may be true is because 95% of PC games are too old to have support for more than 4 or even 2 cores. After all PC gaming has been around since DOS was popular. But if you want to continue to use your same PC for new games, then you may want to consider an i7 because the new titles do utilize more that 4 cores/threads.
      And saying that hyperthreading could offer "less" than nothing is not true at all. Having something available that's not utilized doesn't take away from what is.
      Digital foundry even did a video on upgrading from i5 2500k to i7 3770k
