AAA game with a team of less than 100 people, made in less than 4 years, takes full advantage of the hardware while providing solid performance, amazing haptics that actually enhance gameplay, and utterly unique mechanics. I really hope this game takes off and the industry sees that bigger and shinier does not mean better. We need more unique games built by teams that are enabled to achieve their own vision, not some board or team of investors. The fact that this game is releasing on the day of Concord's shutdown is very bittersweet. I hope Sony (and the rest of the AAA industry) is taking notes, and the sales actually reflect the review scores.
My worry about the entire industry is that this maybe just isn't good enough anymore. Making an amazing single player game that doesn't have microtransactions or live service garbage might just not be enough to keep AAA companies growing/stockholders happy. Which could explain why these companies are all scrambling to make Live Service games that literally no one wants... because it is the only option left... I am kinda worried we are in a bubble and the video game industry is going to crash again...
I have a 4 year old and 5 year old who LOVED playing Astro's Playroom. As soon as I heard about this game, I pre-ordered. We moved their beds into the living room and gamed late into the night with them. It was such a joy to see them actually be able to play a game that's fun and engaging and simply, just joyful. Sure, there were game references they were missing (although they did see Aloy and screamed it out), they are experiencing what I also consider to be the best part about gaming. The mechanics of using light to find hidden platforms, seeking out hidden worlds, and even taking leaps of faith have all brought me right back to playing Super Mario Bros in 1995. It sounds silly, but it almost brings tears to my eyes seeing my boys experience the magic of games that I remember from playing Super Mario Bros on SNES all those years ago. Now, when they're not playing, they're running around playing 'pretend Astro's' and it just warms my heart. One of my boys when I tucked him in last night said, "Brother and I are going to make video games. He'll do the music and I'll do the game." If that's not what life is about, I'm not sure what is. I'm glad you saw the joy of this game too. It's a beautiful game during a weird time in gaming and a brilliant reminder of why gaming can be so incredible. Wish you the best John and DF!

While I do think Astro Bot is fucking gorgeous. I disagree on the level of whiplash you speak of, I think the level of polish is so high on Odyssey. I am still wowed by it, even with the hardware limitations it looks incredible. The Switch was weak back in 2017, Nintendo knew what they were doing. Sure the render resolution is lower, poly count, LOD, everything .... along with none of the showy physics, but taken in context with the power of a 2017 system on a chip, I still can't help think it looks anything other than miraculous.

Mid 30s here, and I find the hype difficult to comprehend. I had some fun with the Playroom and VR games - they were neat but they came bundled with hardware and this looks more of the same to me. @@DanFarrell98 I'm glad you asked. It's a good question, not exactly easy to define, and ultimately subjective, hence the quotation marks. Nevertheless, here's my definition, which may be true for others, but not everyone... By the "Spirit of Gaming" I'm referring to the joy of interacting with the medium. What you DO in games, HOW you do it, and how seamlessly your input (via the controls) channels your intent, and finally, the FEEDBACK (audio-visual), that makes the things you do all the more satisfying. Things like elaborate stories, hyper realistic graphics, extensive motion captured dialogue/cut scenes, etc, while they have their place, only matter once you have all the core stuff (mentioned earlier) in place. Yet, today, studios are doubling down on the latter as the foundation of their games. Budgets are thorough the roof for games that are ultimately a drag to play. Average experiences at best. Those things that actually make the game fun/enjoyable to play are what, I feel, collectively emits the "Spirit of Gaming." Even if one can't grasp what I'm getting at, one look at Astro Bot in action, and it's easy to walk away with the impression of: "This looks fun to PLAY!" That is what gaming was always about, and Truly IS about!
They should make LOW BUDGET FUN GAMES. Y’all remember LBP ? Gravity Rush ? Sly cooper and Jak and Daxter ? Those games weren’t expensive third person movie like games , they were just plain FUN and ENJOYABLE experiences. I wish they make more of these games. I hope astro shows them that not every game needs to be a movie like TPS

A day one purchase for me. This game just looks engineered to make people feel joy and I hope Sony gets the most out of Team Asobi. They didn't need to place individually modeled plants on the ground, or create a physics interaction with curtains. They literally paid people to create details that don't really matter in the end, and that's how you know they loved what they created and didn't just shovel out crap for a cash grab. In an era full of half assed games and micro transactions, what they've created is absolutely incredible, and their desire to make art far outside the effects of profit is commendable. That's awesome
As a PlayStation fan I hope this game sends a message to Sony that these are the type of games we want, they should stick to their single player franchises and if they want to do multiplayer they should just revive Killzone or Resistance.

Right?? After so many games coming out that look like muddy trash (Jedi:Survivor, FF7R, Wukong etc. etc.) I’m glad there is finally a game where I don’t want to rip my eyes out.
Also baked lighting. If your game works with static lighting, baked lighting can look incredibly good, even realistic if you desire. Paper Mario Origami King looks absolutely amazing because the lighting is baked. Like a real tiny paper diorama (shame about the awful combat though.)
Games used to look amazing with baked lighting. But then more and more games became open world with the sun moving through the sky, rendering baked lighting unusable. If it wasn't for that, most games would be full on 4k or 60fps. Look how great and realistic last of us 2 looks and yet it had no ray tracing and it came out on ps4

I think this will be 'remembered' as the LOST GENERATION... The consoles just aren't powerful enough to handle PROPER 'Next Gen' experiences. I mean, they certainly do appear to be very talented at making tons of unique enviroments/themes, so they could probably UNIRONICALLY make a good arcade racer. Especially since Arcade Racers can definitely have simpler controls while still having a lot of complexity. Mario Kart (while it does have more mechanics nowadays), as an example, isn't particularly complex in regards to controls, but there are still tons of cool techniques that pros tend to use.
@@riskyworks Unfortunately, Mario Kart, while being a good "kart game" won't translate too well to a more traditional "arcade racer game." They've tried it before with Blur and Split/Second, both flopped. The Mario Kart whole gameplay is based more on weapons and resource management than actually driving or racing. Yes, you would need a good driving skills to ace Mario Kart, but to just have fun and play you actually don't really need it. While an arcade racer would still need to heavily focus on the driving itself. Making an arcade racer into kart-style with weapons and boost pads only makes it to be a kart game. How are you defining “Spirit of gaming”?
Yea its all about making games like movies nowdays. Realism before fun
Those things that actually make the game fun/enjoyable to play are what, I feel, collectively emits the "Spirit of Gaming." Even if one can't grasp what I'm getting at, one look at Astro Bot in action, and it's easy to walk away with the impression of: "This looks fun to PLAY!"
That is what gaming was always about, and Truly IS about!

@@samson7294 effect on development time really depends on the game, the devs, and the tools. Most baked in shadows, for example, are already generated by a click of a button

It's so SAD that most modern games completely lack any form of physics or interaction with the 'world'... We get beautiful 4K Ray Traced environments, but they're essentially just static back drops, that rarely feature any reactions to a character's movements, etc.
Sony's bread and butter single-player games are among the best in this industry
I mean, regardless of the controversy that the last of us 2 caused, I still can’t find a third person shooter/action game that plays better than that one. Best animation and movement I have ever seen in a game. So you’re right, they are the best.

Asobi has just cemented itself as a MAJOR PS player, alongside Naughty Dog, Poliphony Digital and Sony Santa Monica. So happy for them! 😀
Gotta listen to this instead of watching. I don't want to be spoiled about the locations and all the cool stuff Team Asobi has come up with!
Sure, it's FULL of spoilers
Wow. I’m like legitimately tempted to buy a PS5 just to play this. I absolutely love games with well done and interactive physics.
The first astro bot game on psvr is WAY better
Is this really a 'Physics Game' though? It looks like most of the 'physics' features are just flourishes that don't really involve gameplay?
It seems like we haven't had a game with real 'Physics Puzzles'/Gameplay since Half Life TWO!
@@StreetPreacherr could have worded that differently. I meant I enjoy games with good and interactive physics.
Wait until it comes to PC.
@@_Cetarialyou thing something like smash would come to pc officialy lol? This is the culmination of sony history. I doubt it, maybe thru emulation or if sony become really desperate
2020: astrobot is the only next gen game
2024: astrobot is the only next gen game
This game has a lot of what people want nowadays:
-60 fps
-High resolution
-Beautiful looking graphics (while having both of the above)
-Many physics, because yes (I saw a lot of comments of people asking for this)
For me the only downside is no RT, but for many that also is a positive. And there should certainly be a resolution penalty if there were.
Astro bot getting GOTY nomination would be crazy lol but I’m here for it
Why, it was a done deal as soon as it was announced
94 on metacritic atm. It's between this and FF7 Rebirth.
95% opencritic and it’s a Sony game. Yeah it’s winning.
I LOVE SO MUCH when they use the power of a console for amazing physics instead of hyper-realistic graphics lol
This game is leaving TH-cam's bitrate in SHAMBLES!
They hooked me with Astro Bot Rescue Mission on psvr 1. Its one of my favorite VR games of all time. It really showed me how fun and creative this studio can be. Then they proved it with the Astro's Playroom and now again with Astro Bot. Already preordered, i cant wait!
it seems Sony has completely abandoned VR, I was really hoping for some Astro VR love... err.. not like that
It's actually sad we're genuine getting hyped over something that used to be pretty normal in games, physics simulation.
It's weird how devs forgot how fun it is
@@MasDoucnah, they got lazy and the "graphics is all what matters" people backed them.
I don't think this level of physics sim was ever 'normal'
what happened in the industry is they just use the latest engine (like unreal 4 or 5) and create generic games and call it a day.
Gaming is no longer about gaming. It's about having an expensive PC and Nvidia card, and seeing nice graphics. It's not about being skilled or story or other thing that takes work. Which is very good for corporate profits and companies like Intel, Nvidia, etc.
Team Asobi has been my favourite game studio since I finished Astro Bot Rescue Mission 5 years ago. Thank you Team Asobi for keeping my 40+ years old gaming heart burning with joy.

We need to support these kinds of games !!! by supporting/buying these kinds of games, we send a message to Playstation that we want more variety !!!
Astro deserves it !!! remember that Playroom was free for everyone !!! they deserve our support
I will support it when it comes to PSVR2, where it belongs
I really hope this sells well. We need more games like this
This game is absurdly gorgeous and alive. If this studio had a chance of expanding into a racing game, I would imagine that game to be just as flawless
"Kart game" is indeed a unique genre in itself. The only way to make a good kart game is to make a kart game.
They should make another Modnation game. But an Astro Kart sounds fun too.
@@davidsentanu7836 Oh, sorry. I must've misunderstood what an arcade racer is, my mistake. Anyways, I hope you have an amazing day (and have a good weekend)
@@davidsentanu7836split second was so fun though.

I love the Dual Sense, i never thought I would before I got the PS5. So many developers are missing out on supporting this feature. Super happy that they take it even further in this game!
I'm amazed at how they managed to have so much stuff going on while having a humongous poly-count, hi-res textures, and 60fps. Wizards
When you make a game for one version of CPU and GPU, can’t expect less.
now imagine how well optimised it will be on ps5 pro. they may even introduce a 120fps mode
Through interpolation, perhaps, we'll have to see if they have the software to utilise the machine learning block in that way. To get 120 with raw frames, the CPU boost must be too small, right?
I think they could do it on PS5 even, frame generation would probably work fine in this game since the base FPS is 60.
@@simpleton7The PS5 pro won't need fake frames
It doesn't need to be 120 locked, just unlock the framerate above 60 like GoW Ragnarock does so VRR displays can take advantage
@@chris42069 oh definitely, but i’m thinking 120 flat is possible on a lower resolution like too easily. with pssr too
I would be playing this game right now, but the fucker who delivered my copy threw it at the door and caused a crack in the case, so now I'm waiting for my replacement. To say I am pissed off would be an understatement.
